How to Have a Feminist Wedding

September 14, 2023 | riley

Planning a wedding is an exciting and personal journey, allowing couples to express their unique love story and values. As we progress as a society, more and more couples are opting to ditch tradition and celebrate equality when tying the knot. We know that this can be daunting, though. Where do you even begin? What aspects of weddings are rooted in patriarchy in the first place?

If you want a feminist wedding that celebrates you and your partner as equals, look no further. We’re breaking down the steps you can take and what to leave out to ensure that your day supports women’s rights as much as possible.

How to Have A Feminist Wedding

Get Both Parents Blessing

Once it comes time to get engaged, you may find yourself uncomfortable with your fiancee asking your father for permission. Women aren’t property, and you shouldn’t be treated as such. If you’re old enough to be getting married, you’re probably old enough to make your own decisions–whether your parents agree or not.

However, if this is a tradition that your fiancee isn’t willing to give up, consider having them ask your parents as well as their own. This implies that they respect all opinions and see it more as a blessing of the marriage than a dad passing his daughter off to someone else.

Start with Open Communication

Begin the wedding planning process by having open and honest conversations with your partner about what feminism means to both of you and how you want to incorporate these values into your wedding. If you’re getting married, there’s a good chance you’ve already had these conversations in some way, shape, or form–but you may not have thought about applying them to your big day. It’s important to listen to and try to understand each other’s perspectives, values, and expectations to ensure you’re on the same page.

Challenge Traditional Roles

Feminist weddings often challenge traditional gender roles. Consider how you want to present yourselves beyond the customary bride-groom dichotomy. Some ideas include:

  • Attire – Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident. This might include unconventional attire, such as a suit or jumpsuit instead of a wedding gown (or vice versa), or opting for something colorful
  • Wedding party – Long gone are the days where you have to choose your wedding party based on their gender. Choose friends and family based on their significance in your lives–whether this means having a bridesman or a groomswoman. Let your wedding party be a reflection of those closest to you
  • Getting ready together – While this one is more superstition than anything, if you want to stay the night with your significant other and/or get ready with them the morning of, do it. It can be a great way to settle nerves
  • Walking down the aisle – If you don’t want your father to walk you down the aisle, consider walking together with your fiancee, your mother, both of your parents, or someone else significant in your life
  • No bouquet or garter toss – These are some of the easiest traditions to nix when planning a feminist wedding. Your single friends may never want to get married (or at the very least don’t want to be called out in front of everyone), and your significant other biting the garter down your leg can be uncomfortable for you and your family. There are plenty of other entertainment options for your reception that your guests will find far more interesting
  • Joint bachelor/bachelorette party – When you and your significant other are best friends, you become close with their friends. So why not have a joint bachelor and bachelorette party so you can celebrate with everyone you love?

Pay For the Wedding Yourselves

In the past, the bride’s family was expected to pay for the wedding–almost like a modern dowry, if you will. Not only is this thought process unfair to the bride’s parents, but it’s also outdated. According to Zola, the average couple spends about $29,000 on their big day. That’s no small ask for anyone. Allowing both sets of parents to contribute or paying for it yourself not only adds a feminist touch to your day, but it also gives you more control.

Inclusive Language in Your Ceremony

Your wedding ceremony is the perfect opportunity to promote feminist values. Work with your officiant to craft a ceremony that uses inclusive language and emphasizes equality. You might also want to include readings, quotes, or rituals that highlight the importance of mutual respect and partnership.

The same goes for your vows. Highlight your commitment to supporting each other’s dreams, aspirations, and personal goals. You two are a team, and making this clear in your written words is a small yet simple way to showcase your equality.

Vendor Selection

Your feminist wedding doesn’t have to stop at what traditions you do and do not uphold. It can also apply to your vendor selection. Support businesses and vendors that align with your values. Look for inclusive and diverse vendors who understand and respect your vision–those committed to equal treatment and representation.

Gifts and Registries

Consider a registry that supports gender equality and social justice causes. This could be by including women-owned brands or encouraging your guests to donate to feminist organizations in lieu of traditional gifts, helping to create a positive impact beyond your wedding day.

Encourage Speeches

Traditionally, women were not handed the microphone to make speeches. Luckily, that old-fashioned mindset is quickly disappearing, but if you want to ensure everyone gets to speak, encourage your bridesmaids to give a speech or toast. The same goes for you as the bride as well. If you want to say a word of thanks to your guests, don’t be afraid to grab that mic. Not into speeches at all? Then don’t have them! That’s the best part about it being your wedding–you get to do what you want.

Changing Your Last Name

A feminist wedding isn’t just about the big day–it continues after, too. More people all over the world are choosing to forgo their significant other’s last name, keeping their maiden name. You may choose to do this for countless reasons, but there’s no denying that it makes life easier. You don’t have to spend hours getting all the necessary paperwork ready to legally change it.

If you decide to keep your maiden name, it’s important to have this conversation with your significant other early on. If this is something important to you, hopefully they understand. If they’re uncomfortable with the idea, it may be wise to have a deeper conversation.

Remember, your wedding day is an expression of your beliefs, and it has the potential to inspire others to consider the values that matter most to them. If you’re ready to host a feminist wedding, these steps are just the beginning. Here are seven ways to have an anti-bride wedding that will help you create a wedding tailored to you.

7 Ways to Have an Anti-Bride Wedding

Wear Wedding Attire That Reflects Your Unique Style

Today, couples are embracing their individuality and breaking away from the traditional wedding attire norms that once limited their choices. No longer bound to the classic white dress or formal black and white tuxedo or suit, the options for expressing your unique style are limitless. So, if you’re feeling drawn to something colorful, bold, or even a striking black gown, seize the opportunity to make a statement and let your true selves shine through on your special day!

Choose an outfit that makes you feel like the best version of yourself, allowing your personality to shine through. Remember, it’s your special day, and there are no rules when it comes to expressing your style. Embrace your uniqueness and walk down the aisle with confidence, knowing that your wedding attire truly reflects who you are.

Choose an Unconventional Venue

When planning your wedding, forget about traditional venues and explore options that genuinely resonate with your soul. Whether it’s a beautiful forest clearing, an old warehouse, a serene beachfront, or even your own backyard, the choices are endless. An unconventional venue adds a special touch of authenticity, making your wedding an exclusive reflection of your love story.

Create a Unique Guest Experience

Break away from the norm and think outside the box when planning your wedding experience. Your guests will appreciate the effort to create a memorable and engaging experience.

Skip Wedding Traditions That Don’t Speak To You

Feel empowered to skip certain traditions like the bouquet toss or garter removal if they don’t resonate with you. Instead, involve your loved ones in alternative ways, like a heartfelt group toast or a fun and engaging game. Get creative with choices, such as a delightful dessert bar featuring your favorite treats instead of a wedding cake. Or personally greeting your guests at the reception instead of having a formal line.

Eco-Friendly Anti-Bride Wedding Choices

Your wedding day is a perfect opportunity to show love not just to your partner but also to the environment. Make eco-conscious choices by opting for sustainable decorations, such as using reusable items or repurposed materials. Embrace locally sourced and organic food options to support local communities and reduce your carbon footprint. Consider using recycled materials to minimize waste and contribute to a greener future. An eco-friendly wedding sends a powerful statement about your values and sets an inspiring example for others to follow.

Dance to Your Own Anti-Bride Wedding Beat

There’s no need to stick to the traditional wedding playlist when it comes to music on your big day. Instead, curate a selection that reflects your taste and personalities as a couple. Whether you’re into indie tunes, rock classics, hip-hop beats, or a mix of genres, the key is to have music that resonates with you and your partner. Consider hiring a live band or DJ who understands your style and can keep the dance floor alive all night long. Let the music set the tone for a celebration that’s as unique and vibrant as your love story. So, throw away the rulebook and dance to the beat of your own perfectly tailored wedding playlist.

Moody Lodge at Malibou Lake Wedding With Vintage Touches

August 4, 2023 | justine

When Gabe and Steve planned their wedding, they pulled inspiration from the venue itself—a fishing and hunting lodge built in the 1920s. They wanted their Lodge at Malibou Lake wedding to have a masculine feel complete with florals and vintage touches. Since their big day would be in the fall, they chose warm colors to match the season. Most importantly, they wanted their wedding to reflect who they were as a couple and as individuals, where every aspect would mirror their unique love story

The historic property was a stunning backdrop for their celebration. Under the shade of sycamore and oak trees, the couple tied the knot under a lush arch that perfectly framed the Santa Monica Mountain backdrop. Inside the ballroom, they carried over the fall theme with tablescapes of autumn blooms, dark accents, and gold settings that matched the foliage adorning the black chandelier and fireplace.

With the help of their trusted vendor team, the two grooms created a stunning and inviting atmosphere to enjoy special moments together. They also blended their traditions in thoughtful ways that showcased their personalities. If you want to see more, check out these beautiful photos captured by Mandee Johnson and soak in every detail of their romantic and heartfelt celebration.

The Couple:

Gabe and Steve

The Wedding:

Lodge at Malibou Lake, California, United States

Creating Custom Wedding Stationery

We designed all the printed pieces at Gabe’s business, Color Services. Then we took all those pieces home, and together we spent countless hours hand-tearing, cutting, scoring, taping, and sewing each piece. That included table menus, place cards, table numbers, bar signs, and programs. Outside of the design itself, which went through numerous iterations and prototypes, we tested several paper stocks, weights, shades, and colors, before settling on our final choices. Each place card sat in a wooden holder originally in unfinished wood, but we primed and painted each one gold to match the rest of our tablescape.

Embracing Mexican Tradition with a Mariachi Serenade

We had a mariachi for our wedding ceremony as a nod to Gabe’s Mexican heritage. We engaged Mariachi Arcoiris, the world’s first all LGBTQ+ mariachi troupe, who performed as our guests arrived during our ceremony and the cocktail hour. They were incredible musicians with an impressive repertoire, took requests from our guests, and lent so much magic to our ceremony. Of course, we selected some beautiful songs for our entrance. The wedding party entered with “Cien Años,” a classic Pedro Infante song. My parents are no longer with us, so I walked down the aisle with my brother and sister. Gabe was walked down the aisle by both of his parents. The song “Que Bonito Amor” played during our entrance, another classic made famous by Pedro Infante. We exited the ceremony as newlyweds to the festive sounds of “La Fiesta del Mariachi, ” another mariachi standard perfect for kicking off the party.

Honoring Mom’s Memory During Lodge at Malibou Lake Wedding Ceremony

To honor my mom, who had recently passed, we asked the florist to include purple flowers in the lasso. My mom was famous for how much she loved the color purple. She wore it all of the time. Not long before she passed earlier that year, she had given us her blessing about getting married. This was momentous for us because she was raised in the South with a very religious upbringing. Her approval meant so much to us.

Honoring Heritage with a Beautiful Lasso Ceremony

As an additional nod to Gabe’s heritage, we wanted to include an aspect of a traditional Mexican wedding in our ceremony. Gabe’s parents had a lasso ceremony at their wedding, so we thought it would also be a marvelous tradition to include in ours. Our celebrant Kristin mentioned all of those considerations as part of the ceremony. We asked our dear friends to be our Padrinos de Lasso, who draped the lasso around us while Mariachi Arcoiris played “Sabor a Mi.” The lasso ceremony encapsulates so much of what a wedding should be—a way to reflect the couple’s love and commitment to each other by honoring and blending both families.

A Handcrafted and Meaningful Memento From Their Ceremony

Our Padrino de Lasso and friend, Greg Lawler, is an incredibly creative artist and maker. We asked him if he could create something special so that our ring bearer, Gabe’s nephew, could carry the rings down the aisle. He created this unique valet tray that included some beautiful features. It was a leather-lined, beautifully stained wooden tray featuring stitching reminiscent of that on a baseball (a nod to our passion for the Los Angeles Dodgers). We love this piece and put our rings into it every night before going to bed.

Gabe’s Touching Tribute to His Parents During Their Lodge at Malibou Lake Wedding

After making our way down the aisle and just before the sendoff, Gabe delivered a beautiful and moving speech thanking his parents for a lifetime of love, support, and acceptance. Entirely in Spanish and a complete surprise to his parents, his speech acknowledged how vital their support was to us as a same-sex couple. Although times have changed, we’ve seen many LGBTQ friends rejected by their families. Gabe’s parents are Mexican immigrants, and machismo is still a massive part of the culture, so that kind of support is still uncommon. We wanted to honor them, and this felt like the right moment for that. Gabe delivered this speech on the mic. And even though many of our guests didn’t speak Spanish, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when he finished.

From Reception to Home: The Canvas Portrait That Became a Timeless Keepsake

We are so proud of the large canvas portrait of us above the fireplace. We commissioned an artist from Spain, Daniel Jose Cabrera Castro, also known as “El Dibujo,” to do a watercolor portrait for our anniversary earlier in the year. And with his permission, Gabe at his print shop Color Services, blew this up to a life-sized scale (over 7ft tall) to place on the fireplace mantle.

How Music and An Outfit Change Set The Party Tone

We knew from the start we wanted people to dance, so the music was critical. We spent months coming up with suggestions for the reception playlist. Before dinner was served, we went into a 20-minute dance set to loosen up our guests and prepare them for a fun night. This was a brilliant idea by our planner and the perfect way set the tone of the evening. While we loved our suits, having a big outfit change for the after-party was fun. We slipped away from the ballroom just a few minutes before the party was going to end, ran upstairs to our dressing suite, and donned our party clothes—bold shirts, pants, shoes, and beautiful hats, completely different from our wedding suits. We made it back to the dance floor just as the beat kicked in for our last dance. Song of choice? Duh, we’re gay! It had to be “Last Dance” by Donna Summer!

Wedding Planning Advice: Embracing the Process Together

Cherish the time you have together planning and do as much of the planning together as you possibly can. We spent ten months poring over the details independently and with our wedding planner. And when the day is done, you’ll still have wonderful memories of the time you put into it yourselves to make the day magical. Don’t just hand off all the details to someone else, you’ll miss out on so much.

What Is The Anti-Bride Movement?

July 15, 2023 | kailey

Image by Kelly Ginn Photography. See more of this real wedding here.

If you’ve found yourself scrolling through wedding TikTok, odd are you’ve heard about the Anti-Bride movement. It’s rocking the wedding world, and we’re extremely excited about it. At Junebug Weddings, we’re forever celebrating those one-of-a-kind weddings that challenge tradition. We’re talking about couples creating a day that’s tailored specifically to them. And now we’re finally seeing a wedding “trend” doing the same.

This movement is about thinking outside the conventional planning box and creating a celebration that embraces uniqueness and authentically represents a couple’s love. If this sounds like you, keep scrolling for inspiration that’ll help you pull off your vision

What is The Anti-Bride Movement?

The Anti-Bride movement is taking the wedding world by storm and for good reason. We believe this trend may very well be the new ‘normal,’ and it makes us excited for the future of weddings. This widely embraced and increasingly popular movement is all about modern couples who are boldly ditching conventional expectations. They’re customizing every detail—from their wedding size to fashion choices—to reflect their unique personalities, leaving tradition behind.

How To Incorporate The Anti-Bride Trend Into Your Wedding

Having an anti-bride nuptial is going to look different for everyone. It could mean going for a far-away elopement instead of a large local bash. Or maybe you’ll ditch those traditional wedding trends that just don’t resonate with you. Perhaps it’ll include rocking a colorful suit or wedding dress

The Anti-Bride trend is all about expressing your true colors and doing things your way. And while the possibilities are endless, we’ll dive into a few big ways you can host an anti-bride wedding.

Wedding Size

This trend gives couples the freedom to choose their wedding size based on what feels right. You no longer have to feel obligated to invite everyone and their mother. You’re now encouraged to narrow down your guest list, only including those you can’t envision your day without. This could mean choosing a party-of-two elopement or a micro wedding. Regardless, it’s your day, and you get to call the shots on how big or small you want it to be.

Wedding Venue

With an anti-bride mindset, finding a wedding venue is much more exciting. You get to pick the ‘I do’ space that speaks to you rather than out of obligation. The best part? You’re no longer expected to stick to traditional venues–if you don’t want to, of course. You can get more creative, transforming unconventional locations into dreamy wedding spaces. We’re talking about local restaurants, bars, arcades, or even bowling alleys.

Wedding Fashion

As we’ve said, there are no rules when it comes to planning an anti-bride wedding. And that’s true regarding every detail, including fashion. Traditionally couples were expected to wear a classic white wedding dress or a black and white tux. But that’s no longer the case.

Couples are encouraged to assemble outfits that are comfortable and show off their unique sense of style. And lucky for modern-day couples, non-traditional wedding day attire couldn’t be easier to hunt down. Designers and online boutiques provide endless fashion options for those looking to create the perfect anti-bride look. Think short wedding dresses, pantsuits, colorful tuxes, etc.

Anti-Bride Wedding Inspiration

If you’re on the hunt for some anti-bride weddings to use as inspiration, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a handful of our favorites, all planned by couples and vendors that weren’t afraid to ditch common wedding norms.

Intimate and Fashion-Forward Stanley Park Elopement

April 27, 2023 | kailey

Ivanca and Kevin’s Stanley Park elopement was a dreamy affair that beautifully captured their love for nature and each other. And with the help of their dream team of vendors, they pulled off a celebration that was intimate, fashion-forward, and packed with personality

Starting their day on a non-traditional note, the bride and groom spent the morning getting ready together. After sharing in the excitement and anticipation for their big day, they headed off to Stanley Park for a cozy forest ceremony in a secluded spot under a canopy of towering trees. The couple exchanged heartfelt vows with their closest family and friends as witnesses. That’s right, just because you elope doesn’t mean your loved ones can’t share in the joy of your special day. Remember: your wedding, your rules.

As if the wedding ceremony and reception weren’t already perfect enough, the fashion choices took everyone’s breath away—ours included. The bride was an absolute vision in her white jumpsuit, adding drama with a detachable tulle overskirt. The groom was equally dashing in his timeless tux, complete with a boutonniere complimenting the bride’s stunning bouquet by The Wildbunch

Thankfully Junebug photographers The Godard’s captured this couple’s enchanting forest wedding, inspiring couples to forego their traditional plans in favor of an intimate elopement. Get ready to take notes.

Not Even A Rainy Forcast Can Get in the Way of Love

The weather forecast called for rain during our outdoor ceremony, but thankfully it didn’t. Turns out the forecast was for our happy tears. We–and the guests–were 100% crying during the whole ceremony, especially Ivanca.

Advice From Their Stanley Park Elopement

Our biggest piece of advice is to be flexible during the planning process. You can have a million plans in your head, but things may not go as expected, and that’s okay. These moments will likely become the most memorable to you and your partner, so you might as well make it fun!

Custom Wedding Scent Wedding Favors

Our wedding favors were a custom-scented room spray created by Hairess Home—owned by Kevin’s sister in Indonesia. The scent was quite woody and a bit smokey, reminding us of the fall season. We wanted our guests to be able to remember that moment.

Working With Junebug Photographers The Godard’s

The Godard’s were very easy to work with on the day of and even before the wedding. We had our engagement photos taken by them, and when we decided to do an elopement, they were our first choice. They were patient with us even with all the changes and questions. Since we didn’t have anyone helping us with the wedding planning, The Godard’s were very helpful in giving us some good input during the day’s run-down.

Edgy Yet Tropical Trace Brewing Wedding Inspiration

April 12, 2023 | justine

Florals in bold hues, modern decor, and chic fashion—this Trace Brewing wedding inspiration shoot is the perfect source of inspiration for the avant garde couple. This styled shoot–brought to life by a talented team of vendors–pushes traditional wedding boundaries and allows couples to channel their personalities through unique and meaningful elements.

The industrial venue was transformed into a romantic celebration space. For the ceremony, a stunning triangular backdrop was adorned with lush blooms and greenery. The reception was set against a wall of barrels, with a sleek tablescape featuring black linens, red accents, and gold settings for that perfect pop of color. On top of that, the geometric installation above the bar added an extra touch of edgy modernity to the entire venue. And let’s not forget about the fashion! The black pantsuit, adorned with eye-catching floral detail, captured the cool vibe of the entire shoot. Meanwhile, the lace wedding dress paired with a feather jacket was a softer touch to the overall look, creating a beautiful contrast.

If you’re looking for ideas for your own sophisticated and edgy wedding, this styled shoot is full of on-trend inspo. So get ready to take notes as you scroll through these stunning images captured by Alexa Frankovitch.

Timeless Spring Heights House Wedding Inspiration Shoot

April 7, 2023 | Junebug Weddings

From the spring-inspired florals to the epic bridal fashion, this timeless Heights House styled-shoot speaks to our vintage-loving hearts. Talented photographer, Mady Noel Photo, brought together an expert team of vendors to create a day of romance, classic style, and a splash of quirkiness. And the newly-renovated, historic home venue made for the perfect intimate elopement.

To add personality to the venue’s stunning existing features, pastel florals were used as a  pop of color amid the blank canvas. While the grounded floral arrangement by Wildflower Florist played a big role in bringing this celebration to life, the fashion did as well. The brides were styled to perfection donning an all-white oversized bridal jumpsuit and a chic off-the-shoulder two-piece set.
To top it all off, the couple shared an adorable mini vintage heart-shaped cake decorated with orange trim and frosting daisies to add a retro touch.

If you and your significant other are looking for that extra push to step outside that traditional wedding planning box, consider this it. These inspo-rich photos will kickstart your creative wedding planning, showing you just how creative you can be when it comes to planning your dream wedding.

Wedding Photographer Mady Noel On Why She Chose The Heights House Venue.

This was a styled shoot for an intimate wedding celebration at Heights House in Raleigh, NC. It is one of Raleigh’s newest venues but in an old historic home that was recently renovated. It’s been named as one of Travel & Leisure’s best new hotels in 2022. I wanted to showcase that an elopement or intimate wedding could still be elegant, luxurious, and also a bit funky. It’s a reminder to do whatever feels good to you for your wedding.
