18 Elopements That Will Have You Wanting to Nix Tradition

September 19, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Remember when we shared these spectacular elopements last year? We didn’t think it could get any better but, wow, Junebug couples have proven us wrong! From deserts to snow-capped mountains, from secluded beaches to dense forests, we’ve got 18 epic elopements that make us fall in love every time we look at them. If you’re dreaming of a non-traditional wedding day, these couples will show you that it’s possible to make your dream a reality. And, if you haven’t considered eloping, these just might change your mind!

Kayla and Brennan’s Manhattan Elopement

Where it took place: NYC Courthouse and Maman Greenpoint, Manhattan, New York

Why we love it: If there’s one thing we love more than an intimate elopement it’s when the couple chooses to include a handful of their family and friends in their big day. After saying “I do” at the NYC Courthouse, Kayla and Brennan strutted around the city to get some incredible portraits by Nicole Leone Miller before heading to brunch at one of their favorite local cafes. They also gave high-fashion a carefree boho vibe that made them stand out against the Manhattan city backdrop. Every element of this elopement was perfection!

Janay and Jono’s Ecola State Park Elopement

Where it took place: Ecola State Park, Cannon Beach, Oregon

Why we love it: Janay and Jono’s Ecola State Park elopement proved that all you really need for an epic wedding day is a lot of love, your closest family members, and a breathtaking location. Two days before their wedding, they found the perfect quiet spot along the Oregon Coast, nestled deep in the woods near the coast, blanketed in ferns and clovers that made it look as if they had stepped into a fairytale scene. The moody vibes, the classic PNW weather, and the minimal details were all we needed to get completely swept away by this enchanting Oregon elopement!

Phong and Hoang’s Vietnam Elopement

Where it took place: Bai Tho Mountain, Vietnam

Why we love it: It’s not every day that a couple and their photographer climb a mountain for a summit ceremony, which is why Phong and Hoang’s elopement in Vietnam is one of our favorite of all time! With nothing but a view of the sea, a boho-inspired arch, and a vintage rug, the couple exchanged emotional vows just as the sun was rising, and it could not have been a more romantic moment. As if that wasn’t swoon-worthy enough, the couple and Phan Tien Photography then made their way to a floating sweetheart table decked with boho florals, lights, dreamcatchers, and greenery. This Vietnam elopement was truly like nothing we’ve seen before!

Danielle and Ezekiel’s Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement

Where it took place: Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado

Why we love it: When the mountains called, Danielle and Ezekiel didn’t walk but ran to Rocky Mountain National Park for their intimate elopement. With their daughter by their side, they exchanged vows at the waterfront and then enjoyed a picnic full of sweets and bubbly. This elopement also had one of the most emotional first looks we’ve seen, which Wolf & Rose Photography managed to capture brilliantly. If we had to pick one reason we love this elopement so much, it would be the simplicity of it all. Danielle and Ezekiel proved that you don’t need a lot to have the most perfect, unforgettable wedding day!

Laura and Josh’s St. Lucia Elopement

Where it took place: Tet Paul Nature Trail and Calhoun’s on the River, St. Lucia

Why we love it: We’re all about destination elopements that allow the couple to go straight from wedding mode to honeymoon mode! Laura and Josh decided that St. Lucia checked off all of their boxes for an adventurous location with a little bit of everything – mountains, water, and jungle vibes. We also adore that Laura channeled bohemian princess vibes with a Free People dress and a flower crown crafted by Samuel Franklin, while Josh went for a classic yet casual vibe with his rolled-up sleeves and floral tie. The adventurous spirit and epic views that From the Daisies captured in this St. Lucia elopement completely stole our hearts!

Safrina and Nick’s Mallorca Elopement

Where it took place: Cap de Formentor, Mallorca, Spain

Why we love it: If the cliffside ceremony beneath a canopy of tropical greenery doesn’t get you, we’re positive the coral and violet sunset in this Cap de Formentor will! The couple’s planner, Sarah Linow, found a hidden gem that provided a soundtrack of crashing waves for their ceremony, a secluded spot for their seafood dinner, and breathtaking views of the island. They used a mix of seashells and pearls, an elegant color palette of gold, powder blue, and pink, and combined tropical greenery, succulents, and grasses from Flores Mallorca in a way we’ve never seen before. We are obsessed with how Light Meets Love captured every moment of this dreamy Mallorca elopement!

photos by Light Meets Love, event planning by Sarah Linow – Wedding Planner, floral design by Flores Mallorca, catering by Fiesta Party Service, cake by Chic & Vintage, hair and makeup by Mandy Klimt, wedding dress by Ritual Unions, bridal accessories by Yana NesperVieri, and Kokoro, groom’s apparel by Suits Berlin, rentals by One Fancy Fox, ribbons and textiles by Corcortez Floral, calligraphy by Federflug; see more from this elopement here!

Lisa and Matt’s Catskills Elopement

Where it took place: Kaaterskill Falls and Foxfire Mountain House, Catskills, New York

Why we love it: With winter right around the corner, we’re all in for all things cozy, which is why we’re obsessed with Lisa and Matt’s Catskills elopement at Kaaterskill Falls! Their day not only included a hike to a frozen waterfall but also an intimate, picnic-style vow exchange in the woods and a relaxed dinner at their cabin’s bar. Their day wasn’t full of “traditional” wedding details, but it was certainly full of color and charm!  Courtney Sinclair Photography was there every step of the way to capture this unique adventure with the care and creativity it deserved.

Natalie and Rocky’s Big Sur Elopement

Where it took place: Big Sur, California

Why we love it: Some couples get overwhelmed with the stress of wedding planning and, when that happened Natalie and Rocky, they simply switched gears and left everything up to their dream team of professionals. Blue Daphne Events and Floral Design set up a simple pampas grass semicircle that denoted the ceremony space but didn’t block the spectacular view of the ocean. She also created the coziest floral-covered teepee sweetheart table filled with pillows, blankets, a charcuterie board, and mini wedding cake. In addition to epic views, this Big Sur elopement was full of tearful and laugh-filled moments, and Tessa Tadlock didn’t miss a beat in capturing them all!

Payton and Kason’s Palm Springs Elopement

Where it took place: Hotel El Cid, Palm Springs, California

Why we love it: When your wedding day includes In-N-Out burgers, you know you’re doing something right! We are totally in favor of modern couples, like Payton and Kason, opting for low-key celebrations over over-the-top events. These lovebirds opted for poolside nuptials after falling in love with their space at Hotel El Cid and then they showed off the very best of Palm Springs in their desert newlywed session with Rachelle Davis Photography. We just love the relaxed yet excited vibes they brought to their entire day!

photos by Rachelle Davis Photography, event planning by Carisa Fernandez and Kacie Douglas, hair and makeup by Brie Leach, hair color by Bri Tuggle, wedding dress by Grace Loves Lace, bridal accessories by Joie, groom’s apparel by Saint Laurent; see more from this elopement here!

Colleen and Ross’ Muir Woods Elopement

Where it took place: Muir Woods, Mill Valley, California

Why we love it: This elopement is especially near and dear to our hearts because it marked the beginning of forever for our Editorial Assistant Colleen and her husband Ross! We’re still not over Colleen’s goddess-inspired BHLDN ensemble and gold floral crown created by Mignonne Handmade, and the couple’s cooler-than-cool looks during their newlywed beach photos with Lauren Scotti. But, if we’re being totally honest, the moments that put this elopement over the top for us were the getting ready moments before the main events of their day even began. There’s something insanely intimate and heart-warming about a couple getting ready for the biggest day of their life together, and Colleen and Ross’ pre-ceremony moments were just as sweet as they are!

Jordan and Ben’s Bell Rock Desert Elopement

Where it took place: Bell Rock, Sedona, Arizona

Why we love it: Desert? Check. Mountains? Check. Phenomenal bride and groom style? Check! Jordan and Ben opted for an adventurous elopement in Bell Rock, Arizona, which allowed them to keep their day totally intimate and secluded. We see a lot of desert weddings and elopements, but this one truly stands out among them all because of the location and this couple’s carefree vibes. Amy Bluestar Photography knocked it out of the park in capturing such an iconic US landscape while also capturing the intimacy of this day. And the couple’s boho style was perfection for this location!

Kristy and Caleb’s North Carolina Elopement

Where it took place: Sunnyside Farm Boone, North Carolina

Why we love it: If you’re going to nix tradition by having an elopement, why not go even further with dramatic, non-traditional wedding attire? While Caleb opted for a burgundy suit and floral print bow tie, Kristy was a knock-out in a black floral print gown from Elizabella’s Bridal and a berry-adorned hair clip that matched her striking red and pink bouquet. We love that Drea Dawn Photo + Films took this couple through the open fields and cozy forests around the farm for an unforgettable newlywed session and that these photos enhance the couple’s dramatic style!

Janice and William’s Santorini Elopement

Where it took place: Kapari Natural Resort, Santorini, Greece

Why we love it: Santorini continues to top the list of most romantic places on Earth to tie the knot! Janice and William had a wildly emotional day that was framed by the iconic blue and white architecture of the island, and the result was breathtaking. We absolutely adore that the couple chose a minimalist style for their looks, with Janice rocking a simple A La Robe wedding dress and William looking dapper in a tan Suitsupply linen suit. Nothing about this wedding was overdone, and Days Made of Love captured the simplicity and intense romance of this Santorini elopement brilliantly!

Adeyling and Martin’s Joshua Tree Elopement

Where it took place: Joshua Tree National Park, California

Why we love it: Sometimes, the sweetest things in life are also the simplest. Rather than worry about timelines or vendors, Adeyling and Martin spent a relaxing morning getting ready and sipping cocktails in a cute little house in the middle of the desert. Then they and Alexandria Monette Photography made their way out into the iconic national park for an emotional first look, a vow exchange with the most stunning backdrop, and a portrait session that was equally carefree and romantic. We adore all the natural elements that were infused into this sweet elopement, especially the couple’s casual wedding looks that were perfect for a warm summer day in the desert.

Nicole and Justin’s Stanley Lake Elopement

Where it took place: Stanley Lake, Idaho

Why we love it: Snow, s’mores, and hot tubs…oh my! Nicole and Justin’s Stanley Lake elopement was the epitome of an adventure elopement! The couple began their day slowly — cuddling on the couch with their sweet puppy and getting ready — then made their way to the lake for a private ceremony with a spectacular view of the Sawtooth Mountains. We can’t get enough of their playful photo ops in the snow with Maggie Grace Photography, and we’re still a little sad we weren’t invited to their campfire picnic for s’mores and hot cocoa!

Hannah and Jake’s Mt Hood Elopement

Where it took place: Tamanawas Falls Trail, Mt Hood, Oregon

Why we love it: A cozy wedding ceremony in the woods, portraits under a waterfall, and an intimate cabin reception made this Mt Hood elopement one for the ages! Texas sweethearts Hannah and Jake have always been drawn to the romantic, adventurous vibes of Oregon, so they treated 20 of their closest loved ones to a weekend of the best the PNW can offer. With just two Airbnb cabins, simple florals designed by Oak Grove Floral, a boho-chic Rue De Seine gown, and lots of DIY crafts and curated goods, the couple created the wedding day of their dreams, which Cassandra Michelle Photography captured in brilliant detail.

Giulia and Federico’s Isle of Skye and Dolomites Elopement

Where it took place: The Isle of Skye, Scotland and the Dolomites, Italy

Why we love it: Two locations are always better than one in our book, which is one of the many reasons Giulia and Federico’s elopement is one of our all-time favorites! The couple used the dramatic landscape of The Isle of Skye for their ceremony backdrop and then made their way to Italy to use the Dolomites for breathtaking newlywed photos with The Ferros. As if that wasn’t enough, Giulia wore two stunning dresses – the first one was handmade by her mother, and the second one was a dreamy Rara Avis dress that floated in the wind. Seriously, though, words can’t even come close to doing justice to this magical and mysterious elopement!

Kourtney and Jorge’s San Francisco Elopement

Where it took place: San Francisco City Hall, San Francisco, California

Why we love it: One of the biggest concerns couples face when planning an elopement is thinking they will disappoint their families, but Kourtney and Jorge prove that it is possible to have the day of your dreams and make everyone (okay, almost everyone) happy. The couple had a quick ceremony at San Francisco City Hall, which their family attended, but then they b-lined it to the coast to exchange their personal vows privately. We love that, even though they had a non-traditional wedding day, Kourtney and Jorge chose glamorous attire to bring an element of tradition to their day. This entire day was a pure reflection of the couple’s love and commitment to each other, and Little Boat Photography captured it all beautifully!

This Saint Augustine Beach Wedding Takes Oceanside Styling to the Next Level

September 7, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Leah, Baron, and their super-creative loved ones made this entirely DIY St. Augustine beach wedding look as effortless as if it had been put together by a team of wedding professionals! After a surprise morning rainstorm, the couple’s hometown beach was clear, crisp, and secluded for their barefoot ceremony that can be described as nothing less than wildly romantic. Then they and their guests returned to the bride’s parents’ home for an intimate backyard reception that featured furniture and vintage accent decor found around their homes, hand-dyed linens, hand-painted signage, and tons of natural textures that made it feel like a casual and cozy oceanside celebration. Evergold Photography had their work cut out to capture all dreamy DIY details and heartfelt moments of this at-home summer wedding, and they totally nailed it!

The Couple:

Leah and Baron

The Wedding:

St. Augustine Beach and Private Residence, Florida

For me, the wedding planning process was (almost) as fun as the wedding! One of my mother and I’s favorite things to do together is make things. We look like crazy people running around the craft store and getting excited about everything haha. I think the most important part of planning for us was keeping it real and authentic. The wedding industry can make you feel like you need to buy everything, and although we loved getting married in our backyard, it is obviously not a wedding venue. It is full of imperfections, and I think it is important to embrace these aspects and not worry about making everything “picture perfect.”

Although Baron and I did not meet until college, we both grew up in St. Augustine, Florida. My childhood home holds so many amazing memories, not to mention a pretty nice view, making our venue decision an easy one! Setting up lighting, music, and accommodating 80 guests in a house over 100 years old had its share of challenges, but I could not have imagined it anywhere else! Several generations of my family have grown up there and I am so grateful we got to add another love story to its history.

I love hand-lettering, and had a lot of fun painting jackets for my mother and I, creating all the signs for the receptions, crafting bookmark favors that doubled as escort cards, and adding a personal touch to our yard games. We found a lot of the personal details around the house, such as an old typewriter, books, bikes, casual seating, wildflowers, and centerpieces for the tables.

My bridesmaids and I spent the entire morning setting up the backyard. When it started raining a couple hours before the ceremony and we had to bring everything back inside, I was a little panicked (we didn’t exactly have a plan B) haha. My amazing photographer, Mallory, found the perfect spot in our house to style our portraits, and as soon as it cleared my bridesmaids were sweet enough to dry off everything and put it back in order. Although I wasn’t thrilled about the rain at the time, it may have been a blessing in disguise. The shower left us with some beautiful weather and an empty beach!

The altar was found at an antique shop in our town, and we hung a beautiful piece of stained glass created by Zuni Mountain Art Glass to add something extra without taking away from the already beautiful scenery!

Our photographer was absolutely amazing! When it started raining a couple of hours before the ceremony, she quickly styled a corner of the house into the perfect spot for portraits. She also helped us keep things on track and stress-free considering we did not have a wedding planner or traditional DJ. I was blown away when I got our pictures back, I really feel that she understood my style and captured it perfectly!

I went wedding dress shopping in a slightly untraditional way. I found the Inca gown from Grace Loves Lace online and immediately knew it was perfect, but I was determined to save a little money considering I would only wear to wear it once. I found it used on the website OnceWed and took a risk by purchasing it 2 sizes too big, without trying it (or any other dresses) on. Some people thought I was crazy, but it turned out perfect and was a quick and easy alteration. I paired my dress with simple but elegant earrings that belonged to my grandmother, my mother-in-law’s stunning engagement ring, and bare feet, which is always my favorite shoe choice.

I really wanted to incorporate the ocean vibe into our wedding without a nautical or beach theme. To me, this meant playing with raw materials, textures, and incorporating as many natural elements as possible.

We chose shades of white, blue, and green. These are Baron & I’s favorite colors. I hand died gauze material for the table runners to get the texture and colors that I wanted. They all ended up slightly different colors, but I kind of liked it that way and based our color scheme around them.

Almost all of the details in our wedding were personal to us. We got married at my childhood home on my parents’ wedding anniversary. We are both very laid back, so a small backyard wedding just made sense! Our house is named the sea swan, due to my grandmother’s love of swans. We incorporated swan details on our invitations, centerpiece, and cake topper. We ended up finding most of the details and furniture around our homes and used some of our favorite backyard games. We both love to read, which inspired me to include the books and bookmarks in the reception.

The Floral Design in This Cavalli Estate Cape Town Wedding will Blow Your Mind

August 22, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

When art lovers Suhanri and Jacques decided to tie the knot at Cavalli Estate, they drew on the modern, contemporary vibes of the venue to create a wedding day that was truly one-of-a-kind. Their floral design created by Fleur Le Cordeur was a work of art in itself and featured a geometric ceremony arch covered with large blooms, ceiling installations bursting with color and texture, and a cascading bridal bouquet unlike any we’ve ever seen. This talented florist even made custom floral prints that Suhanri and Jacques used to create table runners, a backdrop for their wedding party table, and all the paper goods. As if that wasn’t enough, Suhanri and her good friend Casper Bosman designed her wedding dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses, which were personalized with sequin, feathers, lace, and tassels for a whimsical, elegant feel that complemented the entire wedding vibe. Claire Thomson Photography totally nailed it in capturing every unbelievably beautiful element of this South African wedding!

The Couple:

Suhanri and Jacques

The Wedding:

Cavalli Estate, Cape Town, South Africa

Do as much you can by yourself. The planning of it all is part of the experience. Be involved and have a personal touch. Don’t stress: it is meant to be the most precious journey. Get a day-of coordinator to make sure everything runs smoothly. Plan well and do everything you can up to the day before the wedding to ensure you are stress-free and present on your wedding day. And remember, the day is about you as a couple — do what you feel is best. Don’t make decisions based on what your guests would love; do what you love!

In the end, all that matters is getting married. The moment we said, “I do,” was the most incredible feeling. Then nothing else mattered. Our pastor poured us each a glass of red wine to celebrate our marriage, and to have our first toast with each other. That was a special moment, and one we will always remember!

The modern, contemporary design of the venue blew us away. We had our 3-year anniversary dinner at the venue’s restaurant and vowed that it would be our venue when we got married. One year later, it was! The mountain views, vineyards, and the pristine sunken garden were perfect for the style we were going for. The venue also has an art gallery and, being an art lover, it just felt meant to be!

We got engaged at Keukenhof Garden in Amsterdam, between fields and fields of tulips. So, we used that as our inspiration for the wedding design. The combination of extravagant flowers and patterns was total perfection.

Our florist really brought everything together. She did a personal shoot of floral arrangements for us based on our personalities and our love for textures and patterns. She also took into account how we got engaged and our love for modern art. That image was the center of our entire wedding vibe. We printed it on fabric for our table runners, used it as a backdrop for our bridal table, and used it for our confetti cones, wedding invitations, photo booth strip designs, and also as inspiration for our stationary.

Vintage-Inspired Garden Wedding at Sweet Meadow Farm

August 11, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

In true Georgia fashion, Kristin and Brian’s wedding at Sweet Meadow Farm was as sweet as could be and full of vintage inspiration. Although the weather took a turn for the worse after their first look and portrait session with Yellow Bird Visuals, this couple rolled with it and had the coziest ceremony inside the farmstead and an indoor-outdoor reception covered by a clear tent. For a touch of vintage charm, they rented mismatched place settings from The Prissy Plate Company and had The Botanical Studio design understated floral arrangements that added warmth to the décor. We are wholeheartedly in love with Kristin’s beaded Jenny Packham gown, which she paired with a delicate gold hairpiece from Twigs & Honey for a vintage-inspired bridal look that matched the vibe of the entire day — and looked so chic with the fur stole she added for the reception!

The Couple:

Kristin and Brian

The Wedding:

Sweet Meadow Farm, Tallapoosa, Georgia

I have always loved vintage gowns and long sleeves (swoon!) When I tried on my Jenny Packham gown, I didn’t think I would ever want to take it off! My incredible seamstress helped me customize the back with a peep-hole, created a custom belt, and made it fit like a glove! My vintage inspired headpiece from Twigs & Honey was the icing on the cake. My husband and his groomsmen wore beautiful blue suits fromGeneration Tux. He added a vest to his attire, which made him stand out and added some vintage flair. My bridesmaids were dressed in incredible beaded gowns by Adrianna Papell.

Brian and I are generally relaxed people, and we wanted our day to reflect that. We toured our venue, Sweet Meadow Farm, on a beautiful spring day and knew immediately that there was no comparison. Their focus on a “slow” wedding day and their awesome team allowed us to find some calm in the craziness of the day!

Our ceremony was the most memorable part of the day. It was a freezing day in Georgia — so cold you could see our breath when we said our vows. I was shivering so hard that I had to sidebar with our guests to tell them that I was not incredibly nervous! Brian and I planted a fiddle leaf fig for our unity ceremony, and we had to walk around our arbor to get to the tree. Brian walked around first and I (clumsy as can be) almost knocked myself out on the arbor. I announced that I was okay and we all had a great laugh. Our ceremony was even more perfect because of its imperfections!

Our best planning advice is to always prepare for the whims of mother nature, and try not to let crazy weather cause you to stress! April in Georgia is hit or miss, and we ended up with freezing weather and rain. Thankfully we planned ahead with a backup location for the ceremony and a completely clear, magical tent for the reception. Despite the rain and cold, our day was absolutely incredible!

We wanted something simple, casual, and delicious for our menu, so we immediately called the awesome team at Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q. We have always loved our neighborhood Fox Bros (an Atlanta staple) and chose some of our favorites for the day. We selected mini pork sliders, quartered chicken, and brisket chili, along with tons of delicious sides like mac & cheese and spicy green beans. The meal paired perfectly with our mismatched china from The Prissy Plate Company.

The 50 Ceremony Arches You’re Going to See at 2018 Weddings

July 17, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Ceremony arches continue to be a favorite trend in wedding decor, and 2018 has been the best yet for inspiration! We’re seeing more couples add unique twists to the shape and design of their ceremony arch to make it fit their style and stand out from anything we’ve seen before. From a-frames to cascading florals to shapes that redefine the idea of a traditional “arch,” we’re so impressed with the ways couples are reimagining this classic decor piece. So, without further ado, here are the ceremony arches that have made the biggest splash in 2018 — and, we imagine, will keep popping up all year long!

The Neutral Color Palette in This Summergrove Estate Wedding Inspiration is Your New Obsession

June 15, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

This wedding inspiration designed by Foreva Events at Summergrove Estate combined a minimalistic style with an ethereal color palette that would be ideal for a wedding in any season. Inspired by the falling leaves of autumn, three floral teams from Akirah CollectiveHarbinger of Spring, and Loco for Koko created a stunning “falling” arch and cascade bouquet for the bride in shades of pink, ivory, and rust. That neutral color palette was then incorporated into the reception table design with a combination of ceramic and glass dishes, dusty pink linens, and an overhead installation infused with dried grasses. Even the bride’s sheer, long-sleeved gown from Jennifer Gifford Designs had an ethereal feel with a modern twist. Ivy Road Photography and Mad Rose Films outdid themselves by capturing and bringing every dreamy of this wedding inspiration to life.

From the event planner: This photoshoot was inspired by the season of autumn; in particular, the way leaves fall gracefully from trees during this season. We were motivated by the idea of seeing the beauty in what many see as ordinary and taking the motif of a fallen leaf as the starting point of inspiration for the shoot. This “falling” concept is seen throughout the styling and details — from the foraged elements of the floral arrangements to the detailed leaf embellishments of the dress, the dusty pinks and browns of the color palette and the dried leaves scattered across the reception setting. The ceremony arbor and hanging arrangement were assembled on the day, adding to the “falling” concept along with the falling bouquet and hand-calligraphed stationery. This is a light and free contemporary barn style shoot showing the collective creativity of some of Australia’s best vendors.

The Best 2018 Honeymoon Destinations

May 17, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Aside from your actual wedding day, your honeymoon is the most exciting part of getting married, so it’s important to choose the perfect location! With so many travel blogs and booking sites posting travel suggestions these days, it can be hard to know where to look. So, we’ve scoured all those lists and rounded up the very best 2018 honeymoon destinations around the world — and included a handful of activities in each location to kick that wanderlust into high gear! Whether you’re looking for a remote beach, a historic city, a romantic hideaway, or a little bit of everything, there is a place to fit every couples’ honeymoon wishlist.

Cinque Terre, Italy

The Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s hidden gems, which makes it ideal for a romantic 2018 honeymoon getaway. Located on the Italian Riviera and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this region includes 5 different fishing towns set in the hillside that, while becoming more popular each year, are not as crowded as the towns along the Amalfi Coast. This is a haven for hikers, nature-lovers, and anyone with romantic ideals of getting lost through the winding streets of a sleepy Italian town. Each of the 5 towns offers a truly unique experience where you’ll be able to relax, indulge in amazing food, and take in some of the most breath-taking views Italy has to offer.

Things to Do

  • Hike the scenic trails between the 5 towns of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Monterosso, and Vernazza
  • Eat focaccia, pesto, and all the seafood
  • Sip the region’s most famous dessert wine, Sciacchetrà
  • Take a boat tour to get a perfect view of the hillside
  • Relax on the beach in Monterosso
  • Stay in La Spezia for more affordable accommodations (and simply catch the train in)

Best Times to Visit

March through May is an ideal time for hikers who want to enjoy the first blooms of spring. There is a high probability of rain during these months and accommodation prices usually start to increase, but you’ll be hitting a sweet spot just before all the summer tourists arrive.

September and October are considered to be the best months to visit the Cinque Terre because the summertime crowds are gone and the temperatures are beginning to cool. The only catch is that October is the rainiest month, but there are plenty of cafes and shops you can cozy up in to wait out the rain.

Portugal

Portugal is quickly becoming one of the top destinations in the world, and for good reason. This vibrant country offers just about anything travelers could want, from old-world architecture that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time to spectacular sandy beaches to castles perched atop hills with breathtaking views you’d have to see to believe. Not to mention it’s overflowing with some of the best wines in the world and known for its exquisite cuisine. Whether you want to walk through history, surf the crystal clear waters, or indulge in a Michelin Star restaurant, paradise is waiting for you in Portugal.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

March through May and September, October are considered the best months to visit because of the cooler temperatures, which makes for perfect walking weather. Portugal’s cities are best enjoyed on foot, so shoulder seasons are the best option for beating the heat and missing the frigid temperatures. As with most European countries, these cooler months tend to also be the rainiest, so pack layers and sturdy, water-resistant shoes.

Iceland

Iceland is one of those rare places on Earth that is just as magical in the winter as it is in the summer. During the winter months, snow covers the majority of the landscape, providing a winter wonderland for skiers, snowboarders, and anyone who’s wanted to see the Northern Lights. During the summer months, the temperatures warm up (though it never gets hot), which makes it perfect for camping, hiking, or attending one of the many festivals hosted in cities all around the island. Regardless of what time of year you choose to visit Iceland, you’ll get the opportunity to walk among the glaciers and relax in the natural hot springs — how amazing is that?!

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

December through early March is the ideal window for winter travelers because temperatures stay right at or just below freezing and there is enough snow-cover to enjoy all the winter activities. Keep in mind that, because Iceland sits at such a high latitude, you’ll only get between 4-6 hours of daylight during winter months.

Mid-June through August are the perfect months for summer travel because, although the average summer temperature doesn’t go above 52°, those are the months you get the least amount of rain and the most sunshine — anywhere between 21-24 hours.

Banff, Alberta, Canada

If you’re the couple who lives to be in nature, there might not be a more perfect 2018 honeymoon destination than Banff. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, this National Park boasts a dramatic landscape that looks almost too pristine to be real. The crystal clear lakes sparkle in hues of turquoise, sapphire, and emerald, snowcapped mountains dominate the skyline, and dense forests offer sanctuary to wildlife of all shapes and sizes. The winter snow is a skier’s paradise and the temperate summers are made for hiking and camping. No matter how adventurous you want to be on your honeymoon, Banff has something for every kind of nature lover.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

June through August are the perfect months for summer sports and activities. By June, the lakes should be completely thawed and at their most brilliant. Plus, all the trails and roads should be open and ready for exploring.

December through March are the ideal months for winter fun. These are the peak months for snowfall and, therefore skiing. However, this also means the risk of avalanches is high, which could cause roads to top tourist sites to be closed.

Sedona, Arizona

Desert honeymoons are becoming more common in the U.S. and (understandably) flocks of couples are heading for Palm Springs or Joshua Tree National Park. But, if you’re craving free-spirit vibes and stunning desert landscapes, look no further west than the haven of Sedona. Located in the northeast region of Arizona, Sedona has a more mild climate than the rest of the state, making it the perfect destination at nearly any time of the year. Between the iconic red rock formations, the new-age spas, and the deep roots in Native American culture, you and your spouse are sure to have a magical — some would say “spiritually healing” — desert experience.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

March through May is considered the best time to visit Sedona because the temperatures are warm enough for hiking but are not scorching. Frankly, the desert climate is beautiful any time of year and there is very little chance of rain. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds (and save some money), December through February is when hotel prices drop and tourists head further south to avoid the low-30° nights and mid-50° days.

Tulum, Mexico

Tulum is one of the hottest beach destinations in the world right now. This idyllic stretch of the Riviera Maya is ideal for couples who want to spend the majority of their time sitting on a beach with a tropical drink in hand. For the days when you want to be a little more active, there are Mayan ruins to explore, caves to dive, and tacos to eat. After months of wedding planning, the clear waters, warm sand, and easiness of life in Tulum are just what you need to unwind and begin your newlywed life on the best foot.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

November and December are the two best months to visit Tulum. This is the sweet spot when hurricane season ends, the temperatures are hot but not scorching, and the throngs of tourists that arrive between January and March haven’t taken over the beaches yet.

Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, one idea drives every part of life: Pura Vida. Costa Rica is famous for its laid-back lifestyle, friendly locals, and diverse landscape, which makes it ideal for couples who are looking for a little bit of everything for their honeymoon. Within a few hours, you can go from volcanoes to rainforests to metropolitan cities to beaches. The food is simple but fresh and made with love, and the coffee and chocolate farms are not to be missed. To experience the very best of Costa Rica, plan a few days in different parts of the country, ending on the beach to round out your adventures with a few days of total relaxation.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

Mid-December through April is the dry season in Costa Rica, which means plenty of sunshine but also a lot of tourists. This is the perfect time for hiking and beach bumming if you don’t want to gamble on rainy weather during your stay.

May, June, and September through November are also great months to visit Costa Rica if you don’t mind a little rain and prefer fewer crowds. The temperatures stay in the 70s all year around so you’ll have perfect temperatures no matter when you visit. If large crowds are a definite deal-breaker, avoid July and August completely!

Thailand

Thailand is probably one of the most famous destinations in Southeast Asia, which makes it the perfect place for couples who want a lively, dynamic, and culturally expansive 2018 honeymoon experience. Here, you’ll find lush jungles, pristine beaches, spectacular palaces, ancient temples, mouth-watering street food, and unbelievable wildlife, as well as plenty of off-the-beaten-path activities. Thailand is famously easy to travel around and relatively inexpensive, so you won’t need to limit yourself to just the cities or just the beaches. Feel the freedom to go anywhere and everywhere, and experience one of the most visually captivating countries in the world while creating priceless memories together.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

November through February is generally considered the best window to travel to Thailand because it’s the driest and coolest season (relatively); although, you should expect hot and humid weather all year long.

Sri Lanka

Of all the destinations on this list, Sri Lanka is likely the most underrated and, therefore, most unexpected 2018 honeymoon suggestion. Located southeast of the Indian continent, this island is steeped in ancient history that’s just begging to be explored. On this relatively small island, you’ll find Buddhist ruins, a 5th-century citadel, vast nature preserves, tea plantations, hundreds of miles of unspoiled beaches, and so much more. Plus, the locals are some of the friendliest people in the world. Sri Lanka is still an up-and-coming tourist destination, which means you’ll find smaller crowds than other tropical locations, making now the perfect time to go!

Note: If you’re traveling from any country except Singapore, Maldives, or Seychelles, you’ll need a tourist visa to enter Sri Lanka. See this website for instructions.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that hit different regions of the island: December to March and June to October. So, if you’re traveling in the eastern part of the island, the best time to visit is between May and September. If you’re traveling in the western or southern part of the island, the best time is between December and March — but it’s also the busiest time in this region.

Kenya

Kenya might not be the first destination that comes to mind when discussing your 2018 honeymoon, but the once-in-a-lifetime experiences this country offers deserve a place on every honeymoon short list. Kenya is most famous for its safaris, so this is the ideal spot for adventure- and animal-lovers alike. But there is so much more to Kenya than meets the eye. Whether you spend time in Nairobi or venture out to the rural villages, you’ll meet native tribes and locals who are ready to greet you with open arms and show you the best of their country and their cultures. They also have incredible beach resorts so you can easily include a sandy escape into your visit, as well. If you’re willing to take a chance on a honeymoon that’s a little outside the box, you’re guaranteed to leave with unique memories that will last a lifetime.

Things to Do

Best Times to Visit

Late June through October are the best times to view wildlife in most of the nature reserves. These are also the months when The Great Migration occurs and the savannahs are flooded with wildebeests, zebras, elephants, giraffes, and big cats.

Now that you know you’re going to have the best 2018 honeymoon ever, read our 8 tips for feeling your best on your wedding day!

You’ll Love the Desert Tones and Mountain Views in This Bell Rock Elopement

May 7, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

If desert vibes and mountains are your thing, then Jordan and Ben’s Bell Rock elopement is just the wedding for you! These lovebirds opted for an adventurous and intimate wedding ceremony for just the two of them. Thanks to Heather Van Houten & Artists, Jordan is wearing a romantic updo with loose curls and a simple Wear Your Love wedding dress that is perfect for hiking around in Sedona. Jordan’s entire bridal look is complete with a flower crown and wildflower bouquet created by Sedona Mountain High Flowers. All of this goodness was photographed by Amy Bluestar Photography and boy did Amy knock it out of the park! Get ready to swoon over some sweet bride and groom portraits!

The Couple:

Jordan and Ben

The Wedding:

Bell Rock, Sedona, Arizona

We have 2 photos that just give us goosebumps! One favorite by Amy is the black and white photo of my back with my husband’s arms around me. There is something so intimate and romantic about the placement of his hands on my back and how he holds me. The other one is the photo of him walking in behind me and I am looking back at him, it’s such a sweet moment.

Your wedding day is about you and your spouse, don’t forget that. It is easy to get overwhelmed and lost with everyone elses’ ideas of what your big day should be like but that isn’t what matters. Keeping that in my mind during the planning process really helped me because in the end, our ceremony was the perfect representation of who we are as individuals and as a couple.

Our photographer, Amy, was so so sweet! I was nervous because we had both never had professional photos taken of us but Amy directed us the whole day. She had a bunch of fun ideas and made sure that we were comfortable with the poses and that we had the landscape views that we wanted. She really paid attention to our personal styles and our interests. She’s the bees knees!

We chose our venue because Sedona is a very special place to me (Jordan). I grew up going to Sedona every winter with my family and continued going with Ben throughout college. It is a beautiful place and Bell Rock was an obvious choice for the ceremony because of the mountain and valley views that surrounded us.

We had a few personalized moments during our ceremony. At the beginning of the ceremony, out officiant had us place our left hands over each other’s hearts and breathe together until our hearts beat as one. We also read our personal vows to each other while our rings were blessed in the sacred waters of Oak Creek. After the ceremony, we used the sacred waters to water a small tree at our ceremony site.

SHOP THIS LOOK

It was a beautiful, intimate, romantic, and small elopement ceremony in the middle of the mountains with no one around. That will always be the most memorable thing about our wedding. It was a ceremony that I got to share with the one person that matters. Sometimes big weddings can become less about the couple and more about the guests and making sure everything goes correctly. Our ceremony was special, stress-free, and honestly a dream come true. I would do it over and over again and never change a thing.

I’m a very laid back individual with a boho-vibe and I really wanted my wedding to convey that. I love the outdoors and the Arizona desert is my home so I wanted a boho style with desert tones.

The Wedding Team:

Photography – Amy Bluestar Photography
Venue – Bell Rock
Floral Design – Sedona Mountain High Flowers
Hair and Makeup Artist – Heather Van Houten & Artists
Wedding Dress – Wear Your Love
Groom’s Apparel – JoS. A. Bank
Rings – Jared

Congratulations to Jordan and Ben on their elopement, and a big thanks to Amy Bluestar Photography for sharing their special day with Junebug! If you love intimate nuptials as much as we do, then check out this Kwaaymii Point elopement in the California sunset.

When it comes to unique wedding reception activities, Gemma and Chris’ birds of prey demonstration at their Elmley Nature Reserve wedding just might take the cake! The reserve, which offers cozy event spaces as well as bird viewing points and natural trails, allowed The Hawking Centre to bring several large birds — including an incredible vulture — for any brave wedding guests to meet and hold. A few of the birds even made a sweet private appearance in the couple’s portrait session with Ed Godden Photography! As you can imagine, Gemma and Chris’ wedding was anything but traditional and was essentially a masterclass in earthy and bohemian style. From the DIY reception decor that featured greenery hoops, garlands, succulents, and glass menus to the groom and groomsmen’s handmade feather bow ties, every detail fit perfectly with the couple’s vibe. The true showstopper for us, though, was the bride’s boho Rue De Seine gown, which she paired with hand-feather sandals, henna tattoos, and a hand-painted white leather jacket.

The Wedding:

Elmley Nature Reserve, Swale, England

We wanted the day to reflect our personalities and all the things we loved. This meant finding the perfect venue that was relaxed and natural but still allowed us to throw a really good party. Once we’d found Elmley Nature Reserve, it gave us so much inspiration for the day. Being in the middle of a nature reserve dedicated to birds, we really embraced this as our theme as we’re both very passionate about nature. Then it was working on all the little touches to ensure they were as personal as they could be. We did as much as possible ourselves, which included designing and making the wedding stationery, creating the signage, the place names, the table runners, the photo booth backdrop, hand making the groomsmen’s bow ties, and painting my own leather jacket. We then spent two days prior to the wedding decorating the venue with our family to truly make it our own. For us, this was as much a part of the experience as the day itself, and we loved every minute.

Having 5 stunning birds of prey join us was the most memorable part of the day. We were a little apprehensive in the run up to the wedding about how it would go down with our guests, knowing that some of them had bird phobias! But when they arrived, they couldn’t have been more popular. Everyone was in awe and wanted to help them, even Lurch the White Backed Vulture. It wasn’t traditional wedding reception entertainment but I think it’s the bit our guests will remember for a long time and it made for some incredible photos.

We knew neither of us would wear traditional wedding attire as it wouldn’t be a traditional wedding. Although it was a summer wedding, I knew I wanted lace and long sleeves but in a cool, quirky style. I already loved Rue De Seine and their new collection launched just as I started looking. As soon as I saw the Avril gown online, I knew it was the one. I fell even more in love once I tried the dress on and every time I went for a fitting — I never wanted to take it off. Everything else came afterwards. The patterns on the dress inspired me to get henna tattoos on my hands and feet and also inspired the ferns and foliage in my flower crown and bouquet. I decorated my own shoes with tassels and feathers to go with the bird theme and then hand painted a cream studded leather jacket that I would wear later in the evening to fit the theme. Because of the nude slip, I decided to go for white bridesmaid dresses as a contrast and it worked perfectly. The bridesmaids also had smaller versions of my flower crown and bouquets.

Our photographers and videographers were both so ace! They all felt like old friends and fit in so well — we couldn’t have wished for anything more. We didn’t have any formal shots and went with the documentary style of photography that Ed specializes in, which made it even more relaxed. We just did our thing and Ed snapped away. We were absolutely blown away with the outcome of both the photos and the video! They perfectly reflected our day and are memories we’ll treasure forever.

Music is a huge part of our relationship, so we chose songs that reflected us as a couple and fit with the sentiment of our day. I walked down the aisle to “Strange and Beautiful” by Aqualung, which is quite ethereal and created such an intense atmosphere. We walked back down the aisle to “Home” by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. It’s a really folky song with the main chorus saying, “Home is wherever I’m with you,’ which perfectly embodies how we feel about each other. Our first dance was “River” by Leon Bridges, which is our favorite song by our favorite artist. Although we knew a lot of people wouldn’t know it, it was perfect for us because it meant so much.
