7 Wedding Signs You Definitely Need At Your Wedding

When you’re planning out your wedding decor, one of the last things that probably comes to mind is wedding signage. However, wedding signs are one of the first things your guests see when arriving, and although they may seem like a small detail, they play a key role in your wedding.

From welcoming guests to telling them where to set their gifts to introducing your signature drinks, signs can be used for almost everything–literally. If you’re unsure which ones you need to include and which ones you can skip, you’re in luck. Because we’re narrowing down which ones are must-haves and sharing some of our favorites so you can get inspired.

What Wedding Signs You Need

Welcome Signs

Welcome signs do exactly what they’re titled–welcome your guests! They help them know they are in the right place and will save your planner the trouble of having to reassure everyone that walks through the door that they are where they’re supposed to be. They typically include your name, the wedding date, and sometimes the venue.

Guest Book

Guest books serve as a scrapbook that you can look back on throughout the years. It’s important to have signs so that your guests can find your guest book and sign it. Wrangling hundreds of guests can be quite tricky, after all.

Ceremony Decor

Signage is one of the easiest ways to dress up your ceremony space. Break down your wedding timeline, let your guests know if you are having an unplugged ceremony, include your favorite love quotes or poems, and more. The wedding sign world is your oyster.

Directions

If you’re holding your wedding in a large space, you might want to consider a sign giving your guests directions. This is especially true if your ceremony and reception are in two different locations.

Bar Signs

Bar signs are extremely important if you’re going to have an open or cash bar. You want to let your guests know what drinks are available (ex. wine, liquor, beer, etc.). If you know you are going to be serving signature cocktails, signs are the best way to introduce the name of the cocktail as well as the ingredients as well.

Seating Chart

Seating charts are another extremely important addition to your wedding decor. You’ll want to let your guests know which table they are at, and who they will be sitting with.

Favors

Lastly, you will want a sign for your favors. You don’t want your guests to leave without their goodies. Placing a small sign next to your thank you gifts will help draw attention and let them know what you’re passing out.

Charming Orange County Wedding at The Colony House

The couple jokingly said they wanted a “Modern Italian Renaissance,” and with the help of amazingly talented professionals, like their planner, Unoaked Events, they pulled it off with a charming Orange Country wedding at The Colony House! Each vendor partner embraced our description of what the look and feel we were going for. We said things like candles, gold, vanity fair photoshoot (yes somehow we found ourselves saying that aloud.) It can be difficult expressing what you want your day to look like, so we just had fun and had “what if” conversations. I think the biggest thing was hiring people that are passionate about what they do, and allowing them to be the artists they are.

Hearing the vows we wrote for each other that our officiants thankfully read for us, because there was no way we were going to get through those words without becoming blubbering messes. And, as a same sex couple, the overwhelming feeling of love and support we felt was frankly…overwhelming. Our guests leapt to their feet and cheered! It was more than we ever could have dreamed of.

Hire a wedding planner, seriously. We both were insanely busy with work and it really, really, really helped keep us on track. Also, work with people that you trust and are passionate about what they do, and let them be creative, they are artists, let them show you what they can do. You, of course, can have your opinions, be it helps to be collaborative and communicate. And last but not least, be kind, they are not vendors, they are people that are working hard to make your wedding magical.

Creative Floral Alternatives for Your Wedding Decor

Whether flowers aren’t your vibe or you’re looking to decorate your wedding on a budget, floral alternatives are a creative way to style your day! Even if you’re a big fan of flowers, unfortunately, you may not be able to access them in 2020 and 2021 weddings. COVID-19 is impacting the wedding industry in a variety of ways, from weddings being postponed to small businesses hurting. One aspect you may not realize is being affected are flowers! Wedding florists, who have been hit some of the hardest by the pandemic, have not only lost business but are seeing a shortage in flowers as wholesale businesses were shuttered during quarantine. With fewer flowers available, we wanted to offer up some of our favorite alternatives to using flowers throughout your day.

Okay, okay, we know this is supposed to be a floral alternatives roundup, but hear us out. While fresh florals might be hard to come by due to COVID, dried florals are a beautiful alternative that also happens to be trending this year! From fluffy pampas grass to dried palms to exquisite arrangements crafted from dried flowers, you don’t have to rely on fresh blooms when decorating your wedding. Wedding decor doesn’t have to be so serious, so consider adding a playful element to your day with a neon sign! I was very fortunate to have an incredible makeup and hair professional. He helped me create a beautiful classic Cuban look. He put waves in my hair and pinned a gorgeous deep red flower on the side. My makeup was a flawless “dewey” look. My dress was custom made at Lace & Liberty. I fell in love with a skirt they had at their boutique. A beautiful vintage inspired, draped, romantic chiffon skirt. I had ideas for the top that they designed for me and combined with the skirt to make a dress. Then I found a killer vintage gold belt with black gems in the center that coordinated with the black diamond engagement ring my husband gave me. 

For the ceremony I wore a little vintage inspired caplet I found at BHLDN and for the shoes… it doesn’t get more personalized than this.. I found sparkly gold Converse! I am 6’2″ and my husband is a little over 6’3″, not only do I love comfortable shoes but I also did not want to add any height. They were perfect.

We had so many family and friends coming from all over the world. We wanted to give them a party they’d never forget that was very “us” but also true to California’s uniqueness. The Houdini Estate is absolutely magical, and a perfect homage to old Hollywood. The second we walked up we knew this was it. 

Adam exited a classic car and walked into the ceremony to “Welcome To The Terrordome” by Public Enemy. Then our friend did an acoustic live version of Madonna’s “Cherish” as the bridal party walked down. I walked down to Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.”

The bridesmaids carried Spanish fans instead of bouquets. Fans that I bought when Adam and I went to Spain for our engagement photos. 

My bridesmaids were stunning! I gave them color swatches and let them find their own dresses. I wanted them to find something they loved and was uniquely them. The tallest bridesmaid started with a chocolate brown and the shortest (my 7yr old niece) ended with a light almond color. This was inspired by different shades of coffee, another big thing in Cuban culture. As I mentioned before, they held Spanish fans that I bought in Spain that were gold and copper, they matched perfectly.

Wedding planning advice from the bride: ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF IT. The stress is not worth it. The major thing I wish I would have done differently is start small and grow as the date gets closer. My problem was that I was so excited I planned all these huge things early on and insisted on sticking to them. We ended up blowing our budget and had way more to deal with than we needed to.

When guests arrived to the ceremony they were greeted with champagne and a choice to grab a Panama hat or Spanish fan giveaway. Really wanted our guests to feel like they were stepping into Old Havana. Then each got a custom luggage tag that told them which table, or I should say country, they were sitting at. We love to travel and really wanted that to show in our wedding.

I feel like our wedding vibe chose us! My family is Cuban (so I was born into good taste), and Adam is a huge movie buff. I loved combining the feel of Old Havana with Old Hollywood. It was the perfect mix of the two of us.

I feel like every inch of our wedding was personalized! I am a Graphic Designer and Adam is a Creative Director / Illustrator. The tables were named after countries where we have visited, either together or before we met. I designed all the table “numbers” myself explaining why each country was special to us. I also designed all the signage placed throughout the venue. Our welcome sign was a beautiful work of art Adam created of us in an old Houdini inspired poster design. Each place setting also had a mini comic book of our love story that Adam illustrated and designed.

We nailed our dance routine. I have never been so proud of us as a couple! On a serious note, my dad is handicap and very ill. We went through a lot to get him to Los Angeles from Houston so he could be with me on our day. I will never forget our Father/Daughter dance. I tear up every time I think about his happy face looking up at me from his wheelchair.

The Budtenders were so unique and huge hit with our guests. We were their first event and they were fantastic!

Our photographers were absolutely amazing. Honestly, I truly believe they saved the day. We had put so much money and effort into planning this gorgeous wedding and of ALL days, Los Angeles decided to rain on OUR day. It never rains in September! I was mortified. If I could go back and change my attitude I would do it in a second, but when you’re in it you really don’t have much control over your emotions. Or at least I didn’t. Joe and Kathrina, from the second they arrived, calmed me down, made me laugh, got those photos that when I look back make me completely forget about the rain. I had my ups and downs during the day but they stuck it out with me. They even drove us down Sunset after the reception to get some photos in our wedding attire at a local classic diner. We ate burgers and drank champagne, they captured our true selves…relaxed and a little tipsy.

Get Inspired by the Spanish Influence on this Casa Cody Wedding in Palm Springs

Lauren and Steven’s beautiful Casa Cody wedding was full of sunshine, tacos, and dancing…is there anything better?! Kelsey Rae Designs helped the couple bring a New York vibe to the California desert and made it all feel effortlessly chic. Love Her Madly took cues from the Spanish-style venue to create floral arrangements in neutral tones with moody pops of color that added elegance without taking anything away from the inherent charm. To round out the day, the couple served tacos, classic deli staples, ice cream sandwiches, and custom cocktails in a tiny mobile bar, all of which spoke to the couple’s fun-loving (and food-loving!) nature. Photographers Joe+Kathrina captured every moment of this wedding beautifully, especially the couple’s post-ceremony portraits in the windmill-studded desert!

Casa Cody, Palm Springs, California

We chose Palm Springs because Lauren‘s family used to vacation there as when she was a kid and because we knew that it would offer such a unique California experience. And finding Casa Cody was love at first sight! We visited a handful of other venues but nothing else compared. It is just a gorgeous, unique, historical property. We wanted to feel like we were hanging out in a backyard full of the people closest to us. We were meticulous in our style choices and wanted to accentuate rather than upstage the natural charm of Palm Springs.

After we said “I do,” we went out into the middle of the desert with our photographers to shoot with the windmills. It was intimate, quiet, and we were really able to embrace each other in the moment before returning to party with our guests at the reception.

We hired Joe+Kathrina after going out for cocktails in NYC. They happened to be on vacation and we immediately knew they were the perfect fit! They were the easiest people to be around, and we honestly feel like we will be friends forever. They also shot our welcome pool party for friends the day before the wedding. Even our friends and family could not say enough good things about them!

If you’ve been looking for a venue off the beaten path, may we suggest browsing Airbnb? Rental properties listed on Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway can be a great hack for finding a unique wedding venue that fits your vibe, has a cozy atmosphere, and that hasn’t been used by every couple in town. Note that not every property available for rental is allowed to be used as a wedding, so be upfront about your intentions when reaching out to the owner in order to save yourself a major headache (and tons of fees!) later.

Simple Has Never Looked More Elegant Than This York Manor Wedding in Los Angeles

Allison and Eric’s wedding at York Manor proved that you don’t need a lot of frills to have a truly memorable wedding! If this wedding is any indication, all you really need is great food (pizza and donuts, anyone?), killer bride and groom style, and a tarot card reading during cocktail hour to have the best day ever! With a party vibe in mind, Allison, Eric, and their planner from Palm and Pine Events kept the details simple, chose a classic black and white color palette, and let their personalities shine in all the right places. They even combined escort cards and favors into one by ordered personalized cookies from The Cookie Munsters for each guest! Nothing about this wedding was over-the-top but the overall effect was as cool as it was romantic. Photographers Joe + Kathrina knocked it out of the park in capturing every moment of this effortless Los Angeles wedding!

As excited as we were to get married, we fully realized that the day of, more than anything else, was just really a big, fancy party. The most important thing to us was that our guests have a great time, that the food and booze were delicious and quality, and that our wedding was a reflection of us.

We were lucky enough to randomly find the most incredible photographers via Instagram. They are talented photographers and just fantastic people; the kind of people you are dying to be friends with but you’re also ever-so-slightly intimidated by because they’re so damn cool! Joe and Kathrina were one of the absolute best decisions we made about our wedding, without a doubt. Our pictures are even better than we could have imagined they would be.

The money you pay for a planner is the absolute best money you’ll spend. Whether it’s a day-of planner or a full-service planning package, whatever you can do to not stress out and enjoy the day will be one hundred percent worth it. Our planner, Shauna Wise of Palm and Pine Events, was an absolute godsend! Everything went off without a hitch, and we were able to breathe and enjoy every second.

My boss officiated the ceremony because I’ve known him since I started my career (and far longer than she’s known the groom). We kept it short and sweet and, as big fans of equality and justice, added a reading from the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, which is a beautiful sentiment about both individuality and marriage: “Marriage is a vital social institution. The exclusive commitment of two individuals to each other nurtures love and mutual support; it brings stability to our society. For those who choose to marry… marriage provides an abundance of legal, financial, and social benefits. In return, it imposes weighty legal, financial, and social obligations. Without question, civil marriage enhances the ‘welfare of the community.’ It is a ‘social institution of the highest importance.’
Marriage also bestows enormous private and social advantages on those who choose to marry. Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family. Because it fulfills yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition.”

Rather than gifting people with something that they would forget to take home, lose, or end up in a donation pile, we figured we would combine the escort card with a little treat — hence, personalized escort card cookies! We got a text the next day saying they’d saved it and had it with lunch and it was delicious.

Our favorite moments of the day were the toasts. They were entertaining and lovely and funny and wonderful. At the beginning of dinner, both our dads got up and welcomed everyone. Allison‘s dad was sappy and sweet and talked about kissing frogs and welcomed Eric into the family. Eric‘s dad told funny stories about Eric as a kid and cracked everyone up. After dinner, the best man and the maid of honor gave their toasts. Eric‘s brother, the best man, told the guests that 10 times out of 10, he’d pick the bride to be on his dodgeball team over the groom. The maid of honor talked about how she and Allison have been through thick and thin together. The toasts have always been the most personal, beautiful moment of a wedding for us, and our friends and family absolutely did not disappoint!
