Two Creatives Created Magic In This Colorful Zimmermann Farm Wedding

August 13, 2023 | justine

Lauren Wysocki

When two creatives tie the knot, magic happens! Colleen, a flower farmer and floral designer, and Christopher, a graphic designer and musician, beautifully combined their artistic talents for a colorful celebration that showcased their personalities in every element. With the help of their team of pros and loved ones, their Zimmermann Farm wedding truly reflected their vision—from the homegrown flowers and handcrafted signs to the original music and homemade pickled vegetable favors.

Surrounded by forest, waterfalls, and gardens, the historic farm estate provided an idyllic setting for their dream outdoor celebration. Embracing the groom’s love for vibrant rainbow colors, the couple curated a muted rainbow color palette with their decor. The ceremony was adorned with ground florals, framing the heartfelt exchange of vows. For their reception, they gathered around a long dinner table for a delightful family-style meal. Under twinkling string lights and stars, they dined and danced the night away.

Their big day was a magical and intimate affair, with every detail thoughtfully considered to complement the picturesque landscape. The pair truly brought this colorful Zimmermann Farm wedding to life, making it a perfect source of inspiration. Follow their wedding journey and explore the beautifully captured details and moments through the lens of Lauren Wysocki.

The Couple:

Colleen and Christopher

The Wedding:

Zimmermann Farm, Pike County, Pennsylvania, United States

How Their Colorful Zimmermann Farm Wedding Came To Be

I am a flower farmer and floral designer, and my husband, Christopher, is a graphic designer and musician, so we had strong opinions about our wedding’s design and style. We wanted an outdoor wedding in September. Our date was on the day of the Full Harvest Moon, which felt perfect. With summer crops peaking and fall crops starting, we aimed to reflect the abundant meeting of these two seasons in early September. Christopher’s favorite color is “rainbow,” so we embraced that idea with an elevated and tasteful rainbow color palette for the flowers, decor, and attire.

Creating A Unique Zimmermann Farm Wedding Ceremony With Personal Touches and Including Their Loved Ones

Chris’ close childhood friend, Seth, served as our officiant, and he personalized the ceremony beautifully. Walking down the aisle with my mom, Chris’ song “In Circles,” played acoustically by his best man, filled the air. Our dearest friends did readings, Chris’ friend reading “Mouthful of Forevers” and my friend reading Chris’ poem titled “What Do You Give The Girl That Has Her Own Flower Farm.” We wrote our own vows. Inspired by the peak flower season in September, the ceremony flowers created a wild garden design. We exchanged vows under a weeping birch tree at Zimmermann Farm, surrounded by ferns and foliage with moss used by Strange Vine Studio to enhance the natural setting. It felt extraordinary to be in a lush semi-circle of flowers, some grown by friends, making it a beautiful collaboration of floral design friends.

Why They Chose Zimmermann Farm As Their Venue

Our wedding at Zimmermann Farm was a unique experience for us, our bridal party, and our guests. It was the perfect choice because it allowed us to customize our wedding and be one of the first couples to get married there. Jenni and Christine, the women behind our venue, were incredibly accommodating, promising to bring our dreams to life. We fell in love with the venue the moment we saw it, surrounded by the beauty of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and the historic house added a sense of charm and history. The venue’s flexibility for an all-outdoor wedding with tented options in case of rain, in-house catering, and convenient on-site accommodations for guests within 30 minutes made it the ideal choice after considering three other venues. We couldn’t have been happier with our decision.

A Nature-Immersed Dinner Zimmermann Farm Wedding Reception in the Forest

Our dinner reception–held along a long table for 160 guests–was a magical experience, with the tree-lined driveway creating an epic and unforgettable dinner party. Our guests still rave about how special and unique it felt. The team at Zimmermann Farm did an exceptional job, creating an elevated but approachable restaurant-style dinner that exceeded our expectations.

Meaningful and Colorful Zimmermann Farm Wedding Fashion

Pursuing nature-inspired elegance, I found the perfect Anna Kara dress with an open back and a custom-made cape veil by Abby’s Sew Right, paying tribute to my dad. With minimal accessories like dried flower hairpins, Bryr Studio custom clogs completed my look. Chris chose a distinctive mustard yellow linen suit from Mantaikotai with linen ties and custom shoes from Adelante. Our bridal party embraced a “muted rainbow” theme with velvet bridesmaid dresses and suits in various shades for the groomsmen.

Dancing to the Music Performed by Talented Friends

The first dance at our wedding was an unforgettable moment made even more special by our musician friends, Emily Jeanne Brown and Eric “Doc” Mendelsohn, who performed for us. Choosing “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young–fitting for our Full Harvest Moon wedding–made it even more meaningful. Their live performance brought tears to our eyes as our friends and family gathered around the dance floor, singing along. To add to the magic, Chris surprised everyone by letting his long hair down in the middle of the dance, earning enthusiastic applause and cheers from the crowd. It was a genuinely touching and unforgettable moment for us.

Wedding Planning Lessons Learned: Prioritize, Pace, and Seek Support

Planning our wedding was a labor of love, with us deeply invested in every element. However, compromises were inevitable, especially with budget constraints. Decision fatigue is real, so we learned to take realistic timeframes for making choices. Taking breaks between major decisions helped us avoid feeling overwhelmed. We discovered the value of seeking help from friends and family who graciously supported us. Though asking for assistance wasn’t natural for us, it proved essential in creating a special day. We recommend not leaving things to the last minute to reduce stress, particularly for significant aspects like outfits, as customizations may take longer than expected. DIY’ing elements like signage, decor, and favors was rewarding, but we wish we had started earlier to allow room for unexpected challenges. Planning ahead and allowing for potential hiccups can make the journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Honoring a Beloved Father: How They Found Joy Amidst Loss on Their Zimmermann Farm Wedding Day

Our wedding day became a bittersweet journey as we unexpectedly lost my dad months before the event. Emotions were raw as we navigated joy and sorrow simultaneously. Despite the challenges, we knew he would want us to have the wedding of our dreams. And his hard work made it possible. We felt his presence in various ways throughout the day, celebrating his life and our special bond. Earlier, during preparations, my mom, a close friend, and I gathered privately to honor him and sprinkle his ashes around the ceremony area, ensuring he could be with us during that poignant moment. It was a heartfelt tribute that brought comfort and made our wedding day meaningful.

Dancing to Dad’s Favorite Song and Signature Dance Move

My dad’s absence on our wedding day was especially felt during the father/daughter dance. Music had always been a shared passion, and “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac had been our chosen song. After he passed away, we discovered a list of songs he wanted played at the wedding. As the day approached, I tried to find a way to honor him that felt like a celebration rather than overwhelming grief. So, we decided to dance to his favorite song, “Sugar Magnolia” by the Grateful Dead. To add a personal touch, we even did his signature dance move called “The Worm.” A hilarious and lighthearted moment that made our friends and family laugh. Halfway through the song, we invited everyone to join us on the dance floor. Celebrating my dad’s memory with joy and laughter. It became a beautiful and uplifting tribute that made the dance even more special.

Homemade Pickled Vegetable Favors

Inspired by early September’s abundant food and flowers, we wanted to share our love for pickling with our guests. Before my flower farming days, I worked on vegetable farms. And Chris and I spent time on an organic farm, sparking my passion for canning. A bridesmaid’s idea of “Pickled You’re Here” favors excited us. Despite procrastinating, I was determined to make it happen, crafting 120 jars of pickled vegetables and jam in the week leading up to the wedding was quite a challenge! Friends helped chop vegetables and tie labels, and with Chris’ contributions, we set up a lovely stand. Guests adored the jars, but a few went missing, adding a touch of humor to our special day.

DIY Signage with Personal Touches

For our wedding, we wanted everything to reflect our love for the seasons, the Full Harvest Moon, and our beautiful venue. Erin Fox at The Moxie Fox created custom illustrations for our invitations to achieve this. Drawing inspiration from these illustrations, Chris designed all the wedding collateral, including our invitations, food and bar menus, escort cards, and place cards. With a personal touch in every detail, our DIY signage added a unique and sentimental touch to our special day.

Homegrown Blooms and a Collaborative Effort to Support Local Growers

While I preferred to avoid handling flowers on our big day (except for my bouquet), I teamed up with my close friend and bridesmaid, Kori from Colly Flowers, to bring our floral vision to life. I grew some of the flowers. But the majority were sourced from local flower farmers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania through the Garden State Flower Cooperative. Our talented flower friends, Lilly and Hope from Strange Vine Studio, worked their magic to execute our flower vision flawlessly. In addition to flowers, we decided to purchase tablecloths and napkins instead of renting them, making it a more cost-effective option. My incredible mom took on the task of ironing and folding each one. Making her invaluable contribution to our collaborative and heartfelt wedding setup.

Bold Disco Ball Filled Onyx Coffee Lab HQ Wedding

From the start, Hannah and Victor had a clear vision for their wedding day: a bold and colorful disco-party ambiance. They even had a brilliant idea to honor the groom’s father by incorporating his disco balls, some of which had been treasured for nearly two decades. With a playful retro color palette, lots of sparkle, and the help of their wedding planner—who used the couple’s pictures, videos, and inspiration blogs—their Onyx Coffee Lab HQ Wedding became a celebration that truly reflected their fun-loving personalities.

The 110-year-old building in a downtown industrial area was the ideal location for their wedding, with its exposed brick walls adding to its distinctive charm. They beautifully transformed the space for the ceremony with floral pillars, colorful candles, and antique holders on the mantle. When it came time for the reception, they flipped the same space, keeping the backdrop while adding metallic streamers for a playful touch.

It was a collaborative effort that ensured the wedding embodied the couple’s unique style and spirit. If you want to see more of this funky, fun-filled disco affair, keep scrolling to see every incredible detail and moment, all captured by the talented Elizabeth Salazar.

How Their Bold Disco Ball Filled Onyx Coffee Lab HQ Wedding Came To Be

The vision from the get-go was to incorporate many colors to create a fun, kind of disco-party vibe. I was so excited to see that mirror balls and disco-themed parties were in style and easily accessible because I wanted our wedding to be a true party. A total celebration of how excited and lucky we felt about getting married. Our incredibly talented wedding planner took all the scattered pictures, videos, and inspo blogs I gave her and made our wedding reflect our fun-loving personalities. Also, my husband’s father was a DJ in Arkansas for many years, and we used some of his mirror balls. Some were nearly 20 years old, so that was definitely special.

A Heartfelt Prelude To Their Ceremony

One of the most important things to us as a couple was to connect before the festivities began. About 20 minutes before the ceremony, we shared private vows we wrote. Good thing they were private because we sobbed the entire time. We used portions of the vows in our ceremony, but that time together was invaluable. We then grabbed a craft cocktail at Pinky Swear, a bar in the same building as our venue, as we waited for the ceremony to begin. Spending that time together allowed us to talk about the gravity and magic of the moment before seeing our wedding guests. It made us ten times more at ease and excited.

Sharing the Load: The Value of Wedding Coordinators and Support Systems

While planning your wedding, try not to shoulder it alone. If you can, hire a coordinator or planner, especially one willing to hear your concerns and advocate for your vision. There are so many options and unexpected, tiny decisions to be made while planning, and it’s normal to become overwhelmed. It can be both exciting and challenging! I didn’t realize there were many decisions and tasks that only my partner and I could finalize, so having an event planner booking and facilitating communication with vendors was beneficial. If you’re coordinating your event, rely on your support system to help you with everything, big or small. And I can officially say that our wedding and the memories we made were worth the effort.

Crafting A Personalized Wedding Experience

The things I consistently valued while planning our wedding were: making sure the event reflected our personalities and our excitement about marriage and incorporating authenticity into our ceremony so that guests learned more about us as a couple. Creating an easy-going, comfortable reception where our guests could mingle and celebrate. We’re most proud of our authentic and intimate ceremony, our stunning florals, and how KDT Brides pulled off an event that felt personal, unpretentious, and incredibly fun. Also, our decorative signs, done by KDT Brides, were absolutely excellent.

Why An Onyx Coffee Lab HQ Wedding

Our venue choice was an absolute no-brainer. I knew I wanted something different than a blank canvas venue, and Onyx Coffee Lab’s HQ in Rogers felt like the perfect place for us. Onyx HQ has a cozy, mellow vibe, even though it’s a pretty big space. I loved the fireplace and the long green-velvet curtain. The large plants they have everywhere are gorgeous. The venue is incredible by itself, without needing to add a lot of decor, and very affordable. It has a ton of character, and the building has a neat history. It was fun serving Onyx coffee and espresso martinis at the reception. A bonus was that many of our wedding planning meetings took place over cups of coffee at the venue during their business hours.

Meaningful Gifts And Surprises On Their Wedding Day

We kept our gift exchange small, affordable, and meaningful. We purchased wooden keepsake vow books from an Etsy shop, wrote our private vows in our handwriting, and gave them to each other before our ceremony. It was extremely special. I also planned a surprise date to Dillards the week before our wedding. I bought my partner a new cologne to wear, and Dillards even personalized the glass bottle with our initials and wedding date. It ended up being so fun!

DIY Wedding Guide: Everything You Should Know to Plan Your Own

July 5, 2023 | riley
diy wedding

Image by Skyler & Vhan Photography. See more of this real DIY wedding here

We know how much work goes into planning a wedding. Figuring out guest lists, seating charts, catering, the venue, etc. can be extremely overwhelming. On top of wedding planning, more couples are choosing to opt for DIY touches. Whether you’re looking to get crafty to save money or you just want to make your special day a little more personalized to you and your future spouse, there’s a lot to know about hosting the DIY wedding of your dreams.

Planner Vs. No Planner

Here at Junebug, we can’t recommend wedding planners enough. While they may seem like an extra expense upfront, they can save you money in the long run. They keep you on track, execute your vision, manage the budget meticulously—including finding discounts when possible–and execute day-of coordination so you can be present with your partner. They also make things a whole lot less stressful.

If hiring a wedding planner is not practical or possible for you and your spouse, consider hiring a day-of coordinator. Rather than help you plan throughout the entire process, they will help coordinate everything you have put together yourself. This allows you to sit back and relax and enjoy your wedding day as much as possible.

Tips + Tricks For Planning a DIY Wedding

Create A Mood Board

If there’s one thing we believe makes planning a wedding easier, it’s creating a wedding mood board. They help guide decisions and keep your holistic vision in mind while also visually describing your desires to your wedding vendors.

They’re especially handy when DIYing items at your wedding because they serve as inspiration. Have you found a centerpiece that you want to recreate? What about a backdrop that you absolutely have to have? Tackling these items will be much easier when you have images to refer to.

Put Together a Budget

No matter what kind of wedding you’re trying to plan, putting together a budget can save you quite a few headaches. Sit down with your partner and discuss how much you’re willing to spend, how much financial help (if any) you are expecting from family and friends, and what your top priorities are. For example, if a photographer is a top priority, budget accordingly, and you’ll be able to identify the areas that you want to cut costs, which in turn, will help you figure out what DIY projects you can tackle.

Recruit Help From Your Wedding Party and Family Members

For the sake of your sanity, ask for help. Your wedding party and family members are there to make your special day come to life. Get together and make DIY projects fun with movies, snacks, and wine. This way you’re crossing things off of your list quicker and making them more enjoyable for yourself.

Consider Thrift Stores

Weddings, while of the most memorable days of your life, are also incredibly wasteful. Unwanted décor gets tossed time and time again. Not only is this a waste of money, but it’s also harmful to our planet. For a more sustainable and budget-friendly option, consider sourcing items from thrift stores, your home, or apps like Facebook Marketplace and Offer Up. You’ll be surprised by the stunning vases, table settings, furniture, and artwork you can find secondhand.

Play To Your Strengths

While it may be tempting to DIY everything you need, it will quickly become a big waste of your time and money if something goes wrong. Of course, you can pay a world-class vendor to correct mistakes at the last minute, but then you’ll be met with stress and another bill you didn’t plan for.

Focus on your strengths—whether they’re sewing, baking, drawing, calligraphy, floral design, etc. The same goes for the family and friends that you include in your projects as well.

Don’t Save Projects Until the Last Minute

There’s no denying that DIY projects are time-consuming. Whether you’re DIYing a good portion of your wedding decor or just an aspect or two, it’s important not to procrastinate. As soon as you’ve settled on a project list, it’s wise to get started. This ensures everything gets done before the big day, and allows everything to look well put together rather than rushed. There’s no such thing as starting too early.

DIY Wedding Inspiration

DIY Wedding Invitations

While wedding invitations are a small part of your special day, they can be expensive. Who knew that paper and printing costs could add up so fast? Luckily, there are many different options when it comes to invites and stationery. Often, the most cost-efficient option is to do your own designing and printing using Photoshop or Canva (which has premade templates you can edit in a pinch). However, this can be time-consuming.

If you don’t consider yourself a graphic design pro, online options such as Minted or Shutterfly offer gorgeous templates at reasonable prices. They both frequently offer discounts as well.

Lighting

One thing that can really take a wedding up a notch is custom lighting–which doesn’t come cheap. Everything from the bulbs you use to where your candles are placed can make or break your wedding. Sound dramatic? It’s not.

Wedding lighting will help people see where they’re going and light the wedding photos you’ll cherish forever. With proper lighting, you can keep the party going even after the sun sets.

There are many options when it comes to lighting that you can easily create yourself. It’s important to keep the lingo in mind so you don’t end up with bright beams when you were really dreaming of a soft natural ambiance. Here are a few of the most popular options for that perfect glow:

  • Uplights – Uplighting is created when lights are placed on the floor and turned upwards towards the ceiling to create a soft glow. Many venues will offer this as a premium, but at $1,000-$3,000, it’s not the cheapest upgrade. That’s where DIY Uplighting comes in. For only $17 a light, you can save hundreds of dollars by renting these multi-colored LED lights. Once your wedding is over, repack all of the lights and drop them back off to USPS with the prepaid shipping label. It doesn’t get much easier than that
  • Ceiling of lights aka Twinkle Lights – If your wedding is taking place outdoors, a “ceiling” of lights is an incredibly easy way to add a romantic touch while keeping things lit. They create the look of a starry night even when the sun is setting. Hang these stringed lights from trees, tent corners, etc. You can find solar-powered options like these on Amazon for as low as $15
  • Lanterns – Lanterns look beautiful in open-air tropical settings. You can find a pack of 5 paper lanterns for under $15 on Amazon
  • Candles – Candles are one of the easiest ways to make a space feel warm, welcoming, and picturesque. They’re also extremely budget-friendly. If you’re afraid of having open flames, combine flameless tealights and tapered candles throughout your space
  • Hanging lights. Hanging large pendants–such as Edison bulbs–from greenery, arches, and tree branches instantly upgrades an outdoor seating area and provides an intimate glow.

Signs

Having various wedding signs posted around your wedding is helpful for your guests. Wedding signs can communicate your ceremony schedule, direct parking, welcome guests, or showcase a specialty cocktail. You can create your own DIY signs using wood, acrylic, glass, old window panes, or chalkboard–just to name a few.

There are a few things to remember when creating the signage for your nuptials:

  • Consider the lettering – Are you a pro calligrapher? Try your hand out! If you’re not comfortable, try using stencils. You can also use decals using a Cricut machine. This takes away the guesswork of hand-painting
  • Your Color PaletteSignage is one of the easiest ways to incorporate your wedding colors. If you’re looking for ways to add a pop, this is it
  • Be Unique – While it may be tempting to recreate a sign that you found on Pinterest, be sure that it matches your wedding’s style, theme, and colors. Don’t copy it just because you think it’s cute. This will ensure you won’t regret it once your big day is over

Wedding Flowers

Florists train for years and know flowers inside and out. That’s what makes them so good at their jobs. While it may seem simple to throw a few flowers together and call it a bouquet, it requires a lot more work than that.

However, if you’re creative (and very patient), you can create your own floral arrangements. To succeed, we have a few pieces of advice.

  • Keep it simple – Arranging florals is a science. You might be a pro at arranging flowers for your home but creating dozens of centerpieces, bouquets, and other arrangements is tricky. Think lots of greenery, small jars or vases, and one or two types of flowers
  • Consider the season – You may have your heart set on a particular bloom for months but consider the season your wedding takes place in. If that flower is not in season but you consider it a must-have, DIYing your florals is not a wise decision–as this may require importing flowers
  • Think about your clothing – Colorful flowers with deep hues, berries, or pollen can stain your clothing. The last thing you want is a large red stain on your dress before the ceremony even begins
  • Take a workshop – This is the most crucial piece of advice that we can give you. Before you start arranging, take a workshop or two. Make a day of it with your wedding party and learn different techniques that you can use for your special day. They’re informative but—most importantly—fun! It may also be smart to watch a Youtube video or TikTok or two (or ten)

Junebug Tip: Use BloomsyBox, a flower subscription company, for your DIY wedding florals. You choose what flowers you want and get them hand-delivered to your door. They even offer dozens of pre-made bouquets. Junebug readers get 10% off with the code JUNEBUG

DIY Wedding Centerpieces

Centerpieces are one of the most visual parts of your wedding reception. They are also one of the most challenging because there are so many of them. If making dozens of floral arrangements overwhelms you, there are many different options for centerpieces. There’s no rule that says centerpieces have to be flowers, after all. Include items that are special to you and your spouse, such as books, mismatched glassware, lamps, lanterns, or geometric table décor.

Ceremony Backdrops

Your backdrop serves as a focal point and frames the most important part of the day—the ceremony. It also happens to be a great canvas to flex those creative muscles. Some of our favorites wedding backdrops include:

  • Drapery
  • Floral installation
  • PVC pipe arch
  • A free-standing wooden wall
  • Strips of multi-colored fabric

Seating Chart

Your seating chart is one sign that your guests are guaranteed to look at, so it’s important that it matches your color palette and theme flawlessly. Whether you’re looking for elegant, bohemian, or rustic, there’s a DIY option. One of the easiest options is to print the table numbers and names and place them on the display of your choice. However, if you’re up for the challenge, there are plenty of more complex options to recreate out there. Need some inspiration? Check out our Pinterest board that features some incredible seating charts from our real couples.

Reception Bar

Having an open bar is a surefire way to keep the party going all night long. But alcohol can be pricey. If you’re having a smaller affair, consider having a self-serve bar with bottles on ice. You can display it in multiple fun ways too–such as filling a kayak full of ice or setting up a table with ice basins. Still want a bar with bartenders? If your venue allows it, bring in the alcohol from a wholesale store like Costco or Sam’s Club. It’s just important to be mindful that you get enough so you don’t run out halfway through the reception.

Photobooth

Photobooths are one of the easiest additions to create for your wedding and they make for great entertainment for your guests (while also being a great favor). And the best part? You don’t need fancy equipment or an expensive team to make the perfect photobooth.

If you want your guests to strike a pose, follow these six tips to create a photo booth that will fit your design aesthetic and won’t bust your budget:

  • Get creative with the backdrop – Your backdrop should not be complicated. It can be anything from a faux flower wall put together on plywood boards to a chalkboard to a neon sign to macrame
  • Light it up as much as possible – Unless you’re a pro photographer, you’re better off not fiddling with your camera’s flash and exposure settings. Instead, make sure that your photo booth area is very well-lit. If using lights or lamps of some sort, use bulbs that are marked for “daylight.” You’ll find that these have a color temperature of about 5000k
  • Set it up in a highly visible place – The whole point of a photo booth is to capture fun moments with your guests. They can’t do that if the booth is hard to find. Try to avoid tucking it in a corner or putting it in a separate room. Instead, think of it as another focal point in your reception design
  • Use props – The more props, the better. Etsy is great for finding signs, cutouts, and masks. You can also find other goodies such as hats, wigs, jewelry, and other accessories at thrift stores or costume shops
  • Create a hashtag – We’re sure you’ve heard of wedding hashtags by now. It’s one of the easiest ways to be able to collect all of the photos taken by your guests. There’s a likely chance that they will share their photo booth pictures on social media so having a hashtag that they can use will make finding them a piece of cake
  • Use a Polaroid camera – If you’re looking for a low-tech way to have physical copies of your guests’ photos, encourage the use of Polaroid cameras. Once printed, have them tape them into a guestbook or place it in a box. You can also use a Polaroid printer to print photos off of your guests’ smartphones. Whichever route you decide on, be sure to have plenty of extra batteries and film on hand

Wedding Favors

Wedding favors are the simplest item to include in your DIY wedding. Rather than spend money on a favor that your guests are going to be too tired (or drunk) to remember, thank your friends and family for attending with one of these DIY options:

  • Homemade candles
  • Bath soak
  • Soap
  • Jam or honey
  • Hangover kits
  • Succulents
  • Baked dessert (cookies, candy, brownies, etc.)
  • Wildflower seeds
  • Mini bottles of alcohol (champagne, your favorite liquor, canned wine, etc.)
  • Hot chocolate kits

Whatever it is you decide to give, make it true to who you are as a couple—whether it ties in with your heritage, favorite snack, etc.—and matches your theme. That way you’ll avoid giving something random that you think guests may or may not potentially enjoy.

Whether you’re working with a tight wedding budget or you simply enjoy the endless possibilities that DIYing brings, there are many ideas you can incorporate to create the DIY wedding of your dreams. We hope this guide inspired you and that you’re ready to tackle any project you’ve been thinking about.  Want to see these do-it-yourself details in action? This Weekend Long Lotus House Wedding Was The Epitome of a Party

While a wedding with a neutral color palette and an organic feel will always be a timeless choice, going all out with bold and vibrant details certainly creates an unforgettable celebration. Sarah and Emil experienced the best of both worlds at their Lotus House wedding. As a destination wedding, they aimed to provide a unique experience for their guests. And with the help of their planner and Junebug member Ember and Stone Events, they achieved their vision and surpassed it with flying colors.

The pair exchanged heartfelt vows between rows of palm trees, under an all-white chuppah. It was the classically romantic ceremony they’d always wanted. The following reception was a whole different vibe, though. Setting the right party tone, a champagne wall with neon pink flutes greeted guests. Meanwhile, sparkly tinsel chandeliers hung above a tablescape adorned with bright red and pink centerpieces. Completing the fun aesthetic was a tinsel backdrop for the sweetheart table and the cake display.

This Lotus House wedding proves that you can mix and match themes, and those unexpected combos can become the most unique touches of the day. And in this case, it was the perfect mix of modern, romantic, retro, and disco! To see precisely what we mean, scroll through these incredible images captured by Feel and Focus Photography.

The Couple:

Sarah and Emil

The Wedding:

Lotus House, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

How Their Lotus House Wedding Came To Be

My husband and I said the ceremony should feel intimate and organic with a natural background and the reception to be completely different. We wanted the reception to be a big party with neon, vibrant bright colors, loud music, and good food. Being a destination wedding, I wanted to provide our guests with experiences and something different than weddings in New Jersey.

A Mistake That Turned Out To Be A Fun, Unforgettable Surprise At Their Ceremony

Since we had a Jewish ceremony, we ordered Kippahs for our guests to wear and take home. I ended up ordering them from a random company I found online at the last minute. They were supposed to say “Wedding of Emil and Sarah Mojica” with our wedding date underneath. After the ceremony, I was made aware of the company’s mistake. Instead of saying “wedding of,” they said “Bar Mitzvah of Emil and Sarah Mojica,” indicating that my husband and I were 13-year-old twins becoming adults in the Jewish community. Everyone had a good laugh.

How Their Wedding Weekend Unfolded

The wedding weekend kicked off on Friday with an intimate dinner at Harvest in the Bellagio for those who arrived early. We transported our guests to Area 15 on Saturday to visit Meow Wolf Omega Mart. On Sunday, we arranged transportation to Greengale Farms for our wedding ceremony amidst beautiful palm trees, accompanied by live acoustic guitar and our closest loved ones. Following the ceremony, we treated our guests to a delightful 9-foot grazing table and a charming mobile bar serving Prosecco, juice, and ice water. The weather was perfect, with sunny skies and a gentle breeze. Afterward, we brought everyone to the reception, where the atmosphere transformed into a lively party.

Setting The Right Party Tone With Colorful Tinsel Decor

We used a champagne wall as a seating chart, where every glass had a name and table number. Every surface was covered in neon, bright flowers, and tinsel. There were tinsel chandeliers that sparked when the breeze hit them. We told our planner and florist that we wanted it to feel like “Disco Barbie,” which they did exactly. Our DJ kept our friends on the dance floor all night and kept the party going.

Working With Junebug Planner Ember And Stone Events Was The Right Decision

I was fortunate to have worked with our wedding planner Nikki and her team at Ember and Stone Events. I found 95% of the vendors we used by looking at other weddings Nikki planned. Our advice is to get a planner. Or at least get a day-of coordinator. We avoided so much stress by hiring a planner with a full team. Our vendors were incredible and went above and beyond, and it all came together because we had a fantastic wedding designer and planner with a great team. Nikki and her team at Ember and Stone events don’t just plan a wedding. She fully designs weddings.

A Creative Twist: Incorporating Merchandise Into Their Lotus House Wedding

We gave out stickers that looked like neon signs and glowed in the dark. We had a few different designs. One was the iconic Las Vegas sign. One was a slice of cake, one was a palm tree that said “best day ever,” and one was a playing card with S&E (Sarah and Emil). Everyone likes “merch,” which should be incorporated into more weddings.

Shop Exact Neon Table Number: Mini Number Neon Sign Battery Operated

Catering To Dietary Preferences By Serving A Vegetarian Feast On Their Lotus House Wedding

Because about half of the guests were either kosher or vegetarian, we decided to go with a primarily vegetarian menu. More specifically, it was mostly vegetarian “junk food.” We had vegan cauliflower wings, beet sliders, vegan mushroom quesadilla, mini quinoa meat tacos, a fire oven, a personal pizza station, and a sushi wall. Everything was incredible, and the vegan and vegetarian guests were so happy to be able to eat almost everything that was offered.

A Single Cake And Sheet Cake Combination For A Budget Friendly Option

We fell in love with a cake from Mary’s Cakes Las Vegas, which we cut for photos and fed to each other. It was the best cake I’ve ever eaten, and I was so upset when I accidentally left it in our hotel room. So since the cake that we cut was not large enough to feed everyone, we also had a sheet cake from Freed’s Bakery that was cut and served to our guests. This decision saved us a few hundred dollars, and honestly, the sheet cake tasted better than a grand fondant-covered cake.

This Bold Royal Hawaiian Golf Club Wedding Blended Two Cultures Together

Gloriani and Luke had a big dream for their wedding—a gathering that would be more than just ordinary. They wanted to bring together their loved ones from all over the world and create an unforgettable experience. To showcase the bride’s hometown’s natural beauty and warm spirit, they decided to decorate their venue using local flowers, natural fabrics, and personal handmade touches. Gloriani took charge of all the planning with love and dedication, while their dear ones came together to help make their Royal Hawaiian Golf Club wedding a reality.

The Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is a hidden gem with stunning views of the Ko’olau mountain range, making it the perfect backdrop for the couple’s ceremony. They stood beneath a beautiful arch adorned with tropical flowers and greenery as they exchanged heartfelt vows. The following reception was a joyful celebration, complete with a money dance and an exciting halau performance.

From the moment guests arrived and were greeted with welcome leis to the elegant capiz name cards displaying creative and cultural appreciation for both Hawai’i and the Philippines, the pair’s wedding showcased a seamless fusion of two vibrant cultures. Junebug member Sunny Golden expertly captured every exquisite detail, allowing us to witness the beauty of how this couple beautifully blended their heritage together. So, keep scrolling to see this enchanting celebration, put together with plenty of thought and love.

The Couple:

Gloriani and Luke

The Wedding:

Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, Hawaii, United States

Incorporating Both Hawaiian and Filipino Culture and Traditions

Bold and bright, our wedding aimed to highlight my hometown’s natural beauty and aloha spirit. We consciously chose to decorate using native flora, natural textiles, and personalized touches. As many of our guests had never been to Hawai’i before, we wanted to provide them with an unforgettable experience and a warm homecoming welcome. In addition to incorporating iconic Hawaiian elements like shaved ice, energetic cheehooo shouts during dancing, and leis for each guest, we also included Filipino traditions and details such as the money dance, capiz shells, and rattan fans. It was a true collaboration of cultures as my family played a significant role in sharing our traditions with Luke’s family and our dear friends who traveled from near and far to celebrate with us.

Why A Royal Hawaiian Golf Club Wedding

My mom and dad went to a wedding at the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club and kept it a secret until I got engaged. I couldn’t believe I had never heard of it before, considering I grew up in Oahu. It was a hidden gem that not many knew about, even most of my vendors! It was a delightful surprise to discover such a special place for our own wedding, and I knew it would create unforgettable memories.

Personalizing Their Ceremony With a Handmade Arch & Wedding Trophy

For our ceremony, we had a custom-built arch that framed the beautiful moment, thanks to the combined efforts of my dad, uncle, and our talented florist. Additionally, we included a unique touch by presenting the trophy from our initial marriage. When we had our civil wedding in the UK, our rings didn’t arrive on time, so we improvised and hastily created a trophy instead. We wanted to make light of the situation and not consider that wedding as our official one since our beloved family and friends couldn’t attend. The trophy humorously bears the inscription “International Marriage League Champions, 2021,” and to add a playful touch, we’ve been attaching small ribbons to it ever since. It has become a cherished symbol of our journey together and the unexpected twists that make our love story uniquely ours.

Wedding Planning Advice: Get A Day-Of Wedding Coordinator

Something happened within our budget where we had to forgo a day-of coordinator, and my mom, an experienced event coordinator (a protocol officer, so big events are her jam), was adamant that she could handle everything. However, I didn’t want her to work on the wedding day. Planning and coordinating leading up to the big day can be manageable if you have a type A personality, love spreadsheets, enjoy talking to people, and excel at PowerPoint presentations. But on the actual day? You deserve to be pampered and showered with love, not stress. The things that matter to you will always matter, so don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. I’m glad I didn’t splurge on favors, accessories (shoes, hair, jewelry), a fancy send-off, or a photo booth. It freed up more of our budget for incredible entertainment, delicious food, and amazing vendors.

Taking Charge of the Wedding Planning Reigns

I took charge of all the planning! Luke patiently sat through countless PowerPoint and spreadsheet presentations as we went through each detail together. Having been a bridesmaid multiple times, I gained valuable experience knowing what I did and didn’t want for our wedding. Getting married before the actual wedding day turned out to be a brilliant decision. As it relieved a lot of pressure and allowed us to truly focus on our friends and family. I cherished the opportunity to express my creativity by designing invitations and crafting our wedding website. It was incredible to celebrate with the people who had known us since we were babies. And had witnessed every stage of our lives.

Their Royal Hawaiian Golf Club Wedding Came to Life Because of Their Families

I take immense pride in my family and their unwavering love that manifested in every wedding detail. It was heartwarming to see uncles and aunties stepping forward to offer their assistance. Some, if not most, of the stunning greenery was cut from my uncle’s yards. While my family worked tirelessly to set up the entire venue. The logistical work, running back and forth, was expertly handled by my dad’s Freemason brothers. Incredibly, my generous aunties donated over 800 orchid leis, and another auntie went out of her way to purchase and provide rattan chargers for each plate. My best friends stayed up late into the night. Lending their hands in arranging flowers and diligently steaming chair covers on the wedding day.

Infusing Personalized Details And Cultural Delights Into Their Royal Hawaiian Golf Club Wedding

To add a personal touch to our wedding, I collected delicate capiz shells from the Philippines and inscribed each guest’s name for their table seating. Not only were these shells a unique and beautiful addition to the decor, but our guests could also use them to wrap around their champagne flutes or as keychains, serving as a lovely keepsake from the celebration. Instead of traditional wedding favors, we encouraged them to fill their suitcases with souvenirs and mementos from their stay. With family and friends traveling from various corners of the United States and the world. We wanted to ensure their trip felt like a true vacation. We included special elements like leis for each guest, a refreshing shaved ice truck during cocktail hour, and a halau performance where guests could learn and dance Polynesian dances.

Personal Touches And DIY Creations

Most aspects of our wedding were a labor of love and a testament to our family’s creativity and thoughtfulness. Save the dates and invitations were hand-drawn and designed by me. While I also took charge of creating and curating our wedding website. The ceremony arch was a custom creation by my dad and uncle, beautifully adorned by our family friend Iris and her husband, Sean. Another impressive DIY project was the Aloha marquee, which my dad built. Adding to the fun, he also crafted a cornhole/bean bag toss game, which I enjoyed painting. I handled the calligraphy for the guest seat placement, and my best friend Justine showcased her talent by providing calligraphy for the seat placement board, styled by my mom. All the signs at the venue, including the order of events, instructions for the video booth, and custom shaved ice orders, were hand-painted by me.

8 Micro Wedding Reception Decor Ideas

June 7, 2023 | Junebug Weddings

Image by Dawn Photo. See more of this real micro wedding here

Micro weddings are popular for so many reasons and they’re some of our favorites. Small weddings allow for couples to have a smaller guest list and make their big day feel more intimate. Plus, if your budget allows for it, having a micro wedding means there is more money available to spend on other parts of your wedding, like the perfect micro wedding reception.

To help you plan your perfect micro wedding reception, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorites to inspire you. Whether you choose to go big or keep it low-key these ideas will help you decide what’s just right for you.

1. Move The Party Outside

Whether you’re getting married in your backyard or saying your “I do’s” indoors, consider utilizing outdoor space for a reception area. This is also a great budget-friendly option. Outdoor areas are perfect for low-key wedding decorations or dramatic lighting floral installations, and balloons. Not wanting to spend a ton of money on decor? That’s okay too, since nature is the perfect backdrop to any celebration.

Junebug Tip: These backyard Amazon wedding decorations can be shipped directly to your doorstep and used as home decor later.

2. Add String Lights Around The Table

When the sun goes down and it’s time for the reception, extra lighting becomes a necessity. There are a few ways to add lighting to your space, but an easy one is string lights. They don’t have to be twinkly—although that is a cute touch.

String lights are easy to place anywhere, too. You can wrap them around the trunk of a tree, create a wall of lights, place them in glass bowls, or just string them above your reception.

Shop string lights: 1. Mini Waterproof Fairy String Lights; 2. Hanging Fairy String Lights; 3. Globe String Light

3. Add A Chandelier To Your Outdoor Micro Wedding Reception

You don’t have to be dramatic to want an outdoor chandelier. Regardless of your wedding vibe,  chandeliers work with all types of wedding themes.  Chandeliers provide extra light and a touch of glam to your wedding. They can be situated above the reception tables or strung on trees around your reception space.

4. Drop Some Disco Balls

If you want to entice your guests to get up and boogie on the dance floor, try adding some disco balls to your reception. You can decorate the disco balls in florals and have them on the ground, hung from the ceiling or trees, or used on your tablescape. This hot trend is sure to spice up your reception space and have you in the mood to groove.

5. Add Some Large Balloons

Balloons aren’t just for birthdays and graduations. You’re celebrating your love, after all. So consider adding balloons or a balloon garland to decorate your space. They add something a bit more unique to your reception and are easier to take down. You can DIY it, find a vendor to help, or order them from Etsy.

6. Use One Large Floral “Ceiling”

If you want to make a big statement but don’t want to cover the entire table, try decorating with one really large floral “ceiling.” Options like the one above act as a focal point for the reception while still allowing your guests to still talk and see each other.

7. Have A Family-Style Dinner

If your guest list is over 10 people, try having one really long family-style table for your reception. This is a great way for people to get to know each other, and give it a more intimate, family feel. And if you feel like making the food family-style too, try minimalist table decor and opt for more dramatic decor to surround your guests.

Junebug TipIf you love the cozy vibe of a family table, check out these ways to create a cozy wedding reception

8. Use An Airbnb or Hotel

If you want your micro wedding reception to be more unique, try finding a totally chic Airbnb. Not only could you find unique spaces to hold both your ceremony and reception, but it can help with your budget. Many spaces are already decorated and could be easily dressed up with some simple decor

If you’re looking for a venue with more space and catering options, head to a hotel nearby. Many hotels offer spaces to hold a reception and have food options. Since your guest list is much smaller, this would be an easier option to feed your guests and provide some dancing space.

We hope this guide helps plan your perfect micro wedding reception that matches your budget and style. For more micro wedding planning tips, check out our ultimate planning guide as well as this decor for every wedding theme!

The Wedding:

Palacio de Fronteira, Lisbon, Portugal

Why A Palacio de Fronteira Wedding

I always had this boho wedding idea in my head. When I was 16, I used to imagine having a beach wedding. Since our families are Portuguese, we started looking for venues in Portugal. At first, we had booked a rustic spot in Sintra, but then the pandemic hit, and we had to change plans. That’s when my planner showed me Palacio de Fronteira, a historic and classic venue. I wasn’t sure about it because it didn’t fit my boho vision. But in the end, I decided to mix the two styles and go with it.

A Labor Of Love: Handcrafted Bouquets By Mom

To add a special touch to the ceremony, my mom made my bouquet and all my bridesmaid bouquets. She made it ten times better than I envisioned, and it was such a special touch that I would remember forever.

Discovering Lucky Savings and Dream Dress Finds For An Affordable Price

I used an online template to figure out what to include in the budget. Once I had an idea, I started getting quotes to see how much everything would cost. You won’t believe how lucky we got with a few things that saved us a ton of money. First, the bar was included in our package, so we had unlimited drinks without worrying about the cost. And guess what? I found my dream dress for just $400! It was on sale at BHLDN, and I didn’t even bother trying it on before buying it. Can you believe that?

The most unforgettable moment of the day was seeing the reception and how everything came together. It was mind-blowing! I know it sounds cliché, but don’t stress about the little things seriously. What I’m particularly proud of is how flawlessly the day unfolded. I honestly can’t recall a single awkward moment. If anything, the day went by in a flash. The music stopped playing at 2 AM, and everyone started chanting for it to return. It was such a fun and energetic atmosphere.

This Madeline Island Wedding Was Full Of DIY Touches From The Bride’s Family

May 20, 2023 | justine

Captivated by its stunning views and natural surroundings, McKenzie and Dominic couldn’t pass up tying the knot on Madeline Island. Though they had initially planned for a larger event, they soon realized that a more intimate celebration would allow them to truly showcase their personalities. With the help of their loved ones, they created a beautiful and meaningful Madeline Island wedding that perfectly captured their unique style with DIY touches.

Surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors, it was the perfect enchanting setting for their ceremony. The couple exchanged their vows in nature under a unique triangular arch made by the bride’s father adorned by overgrown blooms and foliage. The same magical forest vibe was carried through to the reception tablescape–featuring a moss runner, candles, gold accents, and vintage-inspired glassware.

This lakeside celebration was a true labor of love, with every detail handcrafted by the couple and their family. From the charming florals and decor to the exquisite rings and cake, every element spoke to their unique style and personality. Skyler & Vhan Photography captured the beauty of the day in stunning detail, making this dreamy affair a must-see!

The Couple:

Mckenzie and Dominic

The Wedding:

Madeline Island Airbnb, Wisconsin, United States

Why They Decided On A Madeline Island Wedding

We’ve taken multiple trips to Lake Superior as a couple and with family, collecting sea glass and enjoying the views. When we looked for options for a small and private venue, we found this rental on an island in the middle of the great lake. It was just as I had always imagined our ceremony space. It also had the perfect spot for an outdoor family dinner and private access to the lake for vows and jumping off the dock. As lovers of nature, particularly Lake Superior, it was only natural that we chose the breathtaking Madeline Island as the location for our special day, surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors.

Their Brother-In-Law Created A Ceremony Inspired By Their Love Story

Our brother-in-law Vhan officiated our ceremony. He wrote each piece to reflect our journey and individually mentioned the family members there and their impact on our lives. I made our wedding rings and decided to have a ring-warming ceremony where each family member passed them around to share a blessing or good vibes.

Family Involvement Made Their Day Even More Special

We were lucky to have my sister as our photographer, which added an extra layer of intimacy and love to the day. We had a hand in creating almost everything on our wedding day. Each detail was chosen with care, reflecting our unique personalities and style. For example, I crafted our wedding rings as a jeweler, while my dad handmade the arch and lanterns for our outdoor ceremony. My mom’s artistic talents shone in her styling, cake, and floral arrangements bringing natural beauty to the island setting. Ultimately, every aspect of our wedding day was crafted with love and care, reflecting our deep connection to each other and the natural world around us.

Why They Decided That A Smaller Intimate Celebration Was The Right One For Them

We initially planned for a larger celebration that could include all our extended family and friends. However, we soon realized this didn’t allow us to create a day reflecting our personalities and style. We took a step back and checked in with each other throughout the planning process to ensure we were on the right track. One thing that helped us was questioning traditions or expectations that weren’t bringing us joy. By doing so, we brainstormed ways to infuse our personalities and talents into the day. This helped us to create a celebration that was truly unique and reflective of our relationship.

Wedding Advice: Be Authentic And Genuine To Who You Are

We advise staying true to yourselves and your values when planning your wedding. Remember that this day is about celebrating your love and commitment to each other, and it should feel authentic and reflective of your relationship. By prioritizing your personalities and talents, you can create a celebration that is truly memorable and reflects your unique love story. The most important thing for us was dropping expectations of our wedding day and embracing what would make us the happiest.

Giving Handwritten Letters And Moss Agate Jewelry As Meaningful Wedding Favors

TEXTOur wedding was made up of just a handful of family members. Before the day started, we handed out handwritten letters to each person, sharing what having them there meant to us. McKenzie also included pieces of matching moss agate jewelry, so everyone had a token of our appreciation for helping create the most incredible day.

A Private Vow Exchange and Star-gazing Moment

After dinner, we went down to the private dock to share our vows. Even with a handful of guests, we wanted this part of the day to be between us. We got to experience the last sliver of the sun while we recited them. Another favorite moment was at the very end of the day. We went back out to the deck where we’d had dinner and laid on the ground to watch the stars taking in the last bit of our wedding day together.
