Classically Whimsical Casa de Campo Destination Wedding

November 5, 2023 | justine

Annel and Brett really wanted a special celebration with their favorite people. So when the time came to tie the knot, they knew exactly where the ideal location would be. The bride’s childhood summers in the Dominican Republic inspired her to share her culture with their loved ones, making a Casa de Campo destination wedding the perfect choice. While the couple’s parents favored classic styles, the pair leaned towards more unique and whimsical. They challenged their wedding planners, asking them to mix these two different styles. Everything from welcome gifts to floral arrangements embraced an elevated tropical theme. It’s safe to say that their big day turned out exceptionally well, surpassing their expectations!

Set against the backdrop of a lush garden overlooking the tropical landscape, their garden ceremony was overflowing with lush white florals, creating a stunning setting for their vows. The following opulent ballroom reception dazzled with its show-stopping decor, elegant chandeliers, and dramatic lighting. The celebration was elevated further with the addition of fireworks and a shower of confetti, setting a tone of grandeur and festivity.

The couple truly went above and beyond to create an unforgettable wedding for their loved ones. Fortunately, we have stunning photos captured by the talented Juenbug member Ana Hinojosa, showcasing every special moment from this remarkable Casa de Campo destination wedding. And you can find all the lavish tropical wedding inspiration with just a scroll.

Why They Decided to Have a Casa de Campo Destination Wedding

I spent the summers of my youth in the Dominican Republic and wanted to share my culture with my husband, friends, and future family. Casa de Campo was the perfect venue that tied in a romantic Mediterranean-style village with the vibrant personality of the Dominican Republic. My parents have a classic sense of style, while my husband and I are drawn to more whimsical and unique looks, so we challenged our wedding planners to blend the two concepts. And because of the wedding’s location, everything from the arrival gifts to the flower arrangements had roots in tropical flora.

Brett: Reading my vows to Annel. Living a moment I had thought about for quite some time was surreal. The sensation of the experience is hard to put into words—it may be best described as a natural high. I was buzzing.
Annel: Being in a room surrounded by our friends and family. I loved that no matter where I looked, my eyes locked with someone I adore and cherish. The air radiated with love, and my cheeks were sore from smiling that day.

Stand-Out Vendors That Made Their Special Day Surpass Their Expectations

All our vendors stood out in their own way, but we must shout out our wedding planning team for executing a wedding that surpassed our wildest dreams. We had four events for our wedding weekend, and they executed each with ease and a smile. Their attention to detail made each night so memorable and stress-free. Over The Top Black Tie New Year’s Eve Weylin Wedding

Sofia and Adam are all about going big or going home, and when it came to their wedding plans, they aimed for the stars! Their goal was to throw an iconic New Year’s Eve extravaganza that was more than just a wedding. It was a grand black-tie gala and a dance party rolled into one, with all their favorite people in the mix. To turn this wild Weylin wedding dream into reality, they assembled a dream team of wedding pros who could make miracles happen. And let’s just say calling it a success would be the understatement of the century.

The couple’s choice of the former Williamsburg Savings Bank embodied the Gilded Age glamor, featuring towering 80-foot hand-painted ceilings and intricate baroque details. It was the perfect place to exchange their vows. After their ceremony under the ornate dome, a speakeasy-inspired cocktail hour followed. For the reception, the same space was transformed with a mix of long and round tables, vibrant centerpieces, and expert lighting to accentuate the venue’s grandeur. Aerialists added a unique touch by pouring champagne, and the night reached its peak as disco balls descended during the New Year’s countdown, with cannons shooting gold and silver streamers at midnight. A truly grand way to ring in the New Year!

The couple redefined the idea of “you only get married once, so go all the way.” From the 360-degree photo booth and the personalized temporary tattoos to the glittery streamer cannons, they went all out to make sure their guests had an amazing time, and they did it in a truly fabulous way. Keep scrolling to see every aspect of their extravagant celebration, all thoughtfully documented through the lens of Junebug member The Drakes.

The Wedding:

Weylin, Broadway, Brooklyn, New York, United States

Kicking Off their Weylin Wedding Weekend With a Lowkey Gathering

Our wedding weekend began with a lovely gathering at our penthouse suite in Hotel Indigo, located on the Lower East Side. This massive suite had two floors, high ceilings, three terraces, and oversized windows that let us see the New York City skyline. After the welcome drinks, we walked a short distance to Katz’s Delicatessen for our rehearsal dinner. It’s a famous place in New York. A super long line was outside, but our guests got special treatment. We went right in, past all the people waiting, which felt amazing. Inside, we saw the floor was covered in sawdust. They gave us paper menus and platters of food like hot dogs, knishes, pickles, and sandwiches. It was a fun contrast to what we planned for the next night—a fancy black-tie event.

Why They Chose to Get Married at the Weylin

When planning our wedding day, Adam and I decided to celebrate our love at the Weylin in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This incredible venue, originally established in 1875, used to be the Williamsburg Savings Bank. It’s like a time capsule from the Gilded Age, with ceilings that stretch up to 80 feet high, two stunning rotundas adorned with hand-painted ceilings, and more intricate and ornate details than you’d find in a 17th-century French cathedral. Being in this space made us feel like we were part of a rich history that existed long before our love story even began. We knew that, just like the Weylin, our love would stand the test of time. It was the perfect place to celebrate the beginning of our journey together.

Personalizing Their Weylin Wedding Ceremony by Having Their Best Friends Officiate

We did things a bit differently at our wedding and asked two of our close friends to be in charge instead of a traditional officiant. We had two simple wishes for them. One, to use the traditional wedding vows because we found them very romantic. And two, to say these promises to each other, showing how our lives were coming together. It was a special way to start our marriage journey.

The Bride’s Personal Take on a Beloved Tradition

I followed an old tradition for good luck on our wedding day: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” For my “something old,” I used two brooches that belonged to my grandmother, Tanya, and had them incorporated into my beautiful wedding dress. My “something new” was a custom wedding dress created by the talented designer Mark Ingram. I borrowed a tennis bracelet and a pair of diamond stud earrings from the same jeweler who worked with Adam to design my unique engagement ring and our wedding bands. And, to fulfill the “something blue” part, I had the words “I love you!” written in Adam’s handwriting sewn into the fabric of my dress, which came from one of his cherished blue chambray shirts.

Adding Hollywood Glamor to Their Cocktail Hour by Making It a Red Carpet Event

After a touching ceremony that left everyone emotional, we guided our guests downstairs to a cool, speakeasy-style bar for cocktail hour. There, we rolled out a red carpet and set up a step-and-repeat backdrop. Adding a touch of Hollywood glamor to the event. The bar offered special drinks, like the Fernet and Citrus Old Fashion. And a grapefruit-infused sparkling Paloma, named after our beloved dogs, Old Rumba and Poppy Paloma. It was fun to see the drinks served on black cocktail napkins with cute silver silhouettes of our dogs that said, “Drinks on us!” Everyone had a good laugh.

Setting the Party Tone With an Aerialist and a Champagne Wall

We brought our guests back upstairs for our reception, and what a transformation it was! The room had changed entirely, and when they walked in, they were greeted by an aerialist performing to Rihanna’s “Diamonds.” This performance set the tone for the entire night—the dance party had officially begun. We had a cool champagne wall against one of the stunning bank backdrops. It displayed a collection of vintage glassware, each with a guest’s name and table assignment beautifully written in calligraphy. The aerialist reappeared while we were having dinner, impressing our guests again by pouring champagne from above.

Over-The-Top Weylin Wedding Entertainment Extras to Enhance the  Guest Experience

Our commitment to details continued as the night progressed towards midnight. We had some delightful surprises in store for our guests. They had a blast in a 360-degree photo booth, set against the backdrop of a massive 16-foot colorful open arched floral wall. Instead of the usual guest book, we offered an old-fashioned phone where guests could record personalized audio messages for us, which was a perfect match for the building’s history. We didn’t overlook a single detail. We even arranged for an Italian espresso bar to keep the energy high throughout the evening. Ensuring our guests had their caffeine fix whenever needed.

Adding an Extra Layer of Fun Through Personalized Tattoos and Face Gems

Inside the bank’s vault, a surprise awaited our guests: a neon tattoo sign inviting them to “get inked! the bride and groom have a special message for you.” Before the big day, Adam and I had taken the time to craft personalized messages for each guest. We brought in a skilled calligrapher for the day to temporarily tattoo these secret messages onto our guests. The room filled with excitement and delight as each person uncovered their unique message. For my incredible mother, the renowned editor-in-chief Bonnie Fuller, we chose “matriarch” as her secret tattoo. Another dear friend, a nurse who had bravely faced the challenges of the pandemic, received the word “healer.” To keep the party going, we offered face gems to guests while they waited for their tattoos. Adding a touch of extra sparkle to the night.

Disco Balls, Lemon Drop Shots, and Streamer Showers: Welcoming the New Year with a Bang

As the countdown began, Adam and I knew this was our moment to make a big impact. We wanted to go all out. The staff handed out the usual New Year’s Eve decorations to everyone. And they even served lemon drop shots on the dance floor to get everyone in a festive mood. But the best surprise was when two disco balls descended from above. Two women appeared and held signs with numbers. Like in a boxing match, counting down the last ten seconds of 2022. Then, when the clock struck midnight, cannons shot out a shower of gold and silver confetti, covering the entire scene in a dazzling display. It was a magical way to welcome the new year.

Welcoming the New Year in Classic New York Style at Their Iconic Weylin Wedding

Following Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve tradition. “Auld Lang Syne” played as Adam and I shared our first kiss as a married couple. We were all swept up in the moment. It was followed by Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “New York, New York.” Everyone joined hands and swayed to the music in classic New York style. The energy in the room was electric, with hugs, kisses, high-fives, and cheers exchanged among friends and strangers alike. It truly felt like a quintessential New York New Year’s Eve wedding. Then, the lights went wild, and Avicii’s “Levels” blasted through the speakers. I had one more surprise in store, revealing a high-low dress perfect for dancing the night away as the celebration continued. Guests of all ages hit the dance floor, and we partied until the early morning hours, creating countless unforgettable moments filled with laughter and joy.

This Unique Giraffe Shed Wedding Was Dripping With Florals

September 8, 2023 | justine

Right from the start, Stephanie and Bryn were determined to have a wedding that was uniquely theirs. They had one goal in mind, and that was to create a visual spectacle and to throw an incredible party. And they totally succeeded! From the standout florals and unique decor to the chic fashion and playful props—their Giraffe Shed wedding weekend turned into a magnificent festival-like experience.

When the pair explored venues, they immediately felt the shed was the perfect fit. It provided the perfect blank canvas to add their personal touch. For their ceremony, they filled the space from floor to ceiling with wildflowers and brush, transforming it into a scene that can only be described as a dreamy shrubland. Switching things up for the reception, they added a mix of an all-white tablescape with gold touches alongside long wooden tables and benches. They wined and dined in this whimsical setting. And to top it all off, they ended the festivities with a spectacular burst of confetti.

They infused every aspect with their own unique style and personal touch. And what’s even more impressive is that they went the extra mile to plan an eco-friendly celebration. If you’re looking for wedding inspiration and want to learn about how they made this one-of-a-kind special day happen, keep scrolling. Louise Griffin has beautifully captured every detail and more.

The Couple:

Stephanie and Bryn

The Wedding:

Giraffe Shed, Wales, United Kingdom

The Journey to a Giraffe Shed Wedding

Right from the start, we thought about having a destination wedding ceremony followed by a big party in the UK. However, we soon realized that we would also have to have a civil registry in the UK, which made the abroad wedding redundant. So, we chose a small family ceremony on day one and a big party for everyone on day two. We looked for places that could host an entire weekend. Since Bryn is from South Wales, we wanted to get married there. We loved that it was a blank canvas we could put our stamp on. The venue and its owners, Hannah and Neilo, completely matched our vibe and personality. Once we locked in The Giraffe Shed, the vision of what I wanted to do with the venue came naturally. We focused on good food, music, making guests happy, and my love for florals and decor. We got ideas from other couples and online. We wanted to make the place feel like being outside. Our goal was to give guests a unique experience, and that’s what guided all our choices.

Wedding Planning: Hire A Planner

Our main advice is to ensure that you remember what is most important to you regarding your wedding. There are no rules and no rights or wrongs. If your budget can stretch to it, hire a wedding planner. Planning a wedding is a full-time job and can be very stressful, particularly in the last few months. But if you cannot afford it, do not worry! It can be done, and we are proof of that. For me, I just needed to visualize and write everything down in as much detail as possible. I ended up with one document that dealt with all timings and styling. I then shared this document with all of my wedding vendors so that everybody was on the same page. We also, of course, had a spreadsheet which we updated regularly.

Making Eco-Conscious Choices Starting With Repurposed Florals

Our main eco decision for the weekend was repurposing the florals, particularly those from the aisle. We used the same florals throughout the weekend, changing the style as the room was turned around. Every bit of foliage and flower was visible for every part of the wedding. The moveable florals began as a curved aisle leading to the living wall and snaking under the hanging installation. They were then moved to sit inside the U-shaped table for our wedding breakfast. On day two, those florals were positioned all over the venue—around the welcome sign, at the bottom of the escort wall, at the ends of our tables, and in front of our top table. They really were the star of the show.

Creating A Seating Plan Wall Decor That Doubled As A Photo Backdrop Wall

We were extremely happy with how our seating plan wall turned out. Which we sourced, printed, and labeled ourselves. It was important that this felt personal, so we tried to use photos of us with each of our guests over the last eight years. Again, there was a further interactive element, as guests had to pull their pictures off the wall to see their table number. It meant they could keep their photos and clear the wall to be used as a backdrop for the photo booth on day two. The florals were the standout element of the weekend, but what our florist created here for this space was truly extraordinary.

DIY Elements That Reflected Their Personalities

We planned the wedding from start to finish, and we did incorporate lots of DIY elements. After making a wedding website through which we sent our invites, we used the theme and color palette throughout our wedding stationery. We designed all of the stationery that Bryns created using his technical skills. We also made our lawn games, including a “Put a ring on it” ring toss and corn hole. We made the cornhole boards with a Welsh leek on one and bamboo on the other to represent each of us in an unconventional way.

Incorporating The Bride’s Chinese Heritage Through Multi-Purpose Personalized Chopsticks

We married in beautiful Wales, but we’re proud of how we incorporated elements from our heritages and cultures. We did not intend to have wedding favors initially, as we didn’t want to spend money on something that may have been wasted. However, we also felt the same way about our place cards. In trying to come up with a sustainable but creative way to show guests where they sat, the idea for personalized chopsticks was born. This was an additional way to incorporate a nod to my Chinese heritage, and the ribbons worked wonders for a fun grand entrance on Saturday. Making this a much more eco-friendly aspect than something that would have ended up discarded.

Discovering Their Caterers at a Wedding Fair

We found our dream caterers at the only wedding fair we went to. They had a taster, and we instantly knew they were the caterers for us, mainly when they told us they could cater our whole weekend, changing up the styles to suit the different requirements and numbers. We had a six-course tasting menu on Friday that could rival a Michelin-starred restaurant. We knew we wanted to do something extra on this day with the seating, so we had our tables arranged in a U-shape facing our living wall and feature window, where we had a plating-up table to add a little bit of drama/theater to the proceedings.

Unexpected Hair Change on Day Two of their Giraffe Shed Wedding

The start of day two brought an unexpected twist as I chopped off my hair, surprising both my husband and our guests. Our initial day one plan included an intimate ceremony and wedding breakfast, but we also invited nearby guests for a get-together at The Giraffe Shed that evening. With a majority RSVPing positively, we transformed it into a celebratory affair, complete with cake and fizz. As a result, many of my guests saw me with longer hair on Friday night, shortly before the big transformation on Saturday.

DIY Wedding Guide: Everything You Should Know to Plan Your Own

July 5, 2023 | riley
diy wedding

Image by Skyler & Vhan Photography. See more of this real DIY wedding here

We know how much work goes into planning a wedding. Figuring out guest lists, seating charts, catering, the venue, etc. can be extremely overwhelming. On top of wedding planning, more couples are choosing to opt for DIY touches. Whether you’re looking to get crafty to save money or you just want to make your special day a little more personalized to you and your future spouse, there’s a lot to know about hosting the DIY wedding of your dreams.

Planner Vs. No Planner

Here at Junebug, we can’t recommend wedding planners enough. While they may seem like an extra expense upfront, they can save you money in the long run. They keep you on track, execute your vision, manage the budget meticulously—including finding discounts when possible–and execute day-of coordination so you can be present with your partner. They also make things a whole lot less stressful.

If hiring a wedding planner is not practical or possible for you and your spouse, consider hiring a day-of coordinator. Rather than help you plan throughout the entire process, they will help coordinate everything you have put together yourself. This allows you to sit back and relax and enjoy your wedding day as much as possible.

Tips + Tricks For Planning a DIY Wedding

Create A Mood Board

If there’s one thing we believe makes planning a wedding easier, it’s creating a wedding mood board. They help guide decisions and keep your holistic vision in mind while also visually describing your desires to your wedding vendors.

They’re especially handy when DIYing items at your wedding because they serve as inspiration. Have you found a centerpiece that you want to recreate? What about a backdrop that you absolutely have to have? Tackling these items will be much easier when you have images to refer to.

Put Together a Budget

No matter what kind of wedding you’re trying to plan, putting together a budget can save you quite a few headaches. Sit down with your partner and discuss how much you’re willing to spend, how much financial help (if any) you are expecting from family and friends, and what your top priorities are. For example, if a photographer is a top priority, budget accordingly, and you’ll be able to identify the areas that you want to cut costs, which in turn, will help you figure out what DIY projects you can tackle.

Recruit Help From Your Wedding Party and Family Members

For the sake of your sanity, ask for help. Your wedding party and family members are there to make your special day come to life. Get together and make DIY projects fun with movies, snacks, and wine. This way you’re crossing things off of your list quicker and making them more enjoyable for yourself.

Consider Thrift Stores

Weddings, while of the most memorable days of your life, are also incredibly wasteful. Unwanted décor gets tossed time and time again. Not only is this a waste of money, but it’s also harmful to our planet. For a more sustainable and budget-friendly option, consider sourcing items from thrift stores, your home, or apps like Facebook Marketplace and Offer Up. You’ll be surprised by the stunning vases, table settings, furniture, and artwork you can find secondhand.

Play To Your Strengths

While it may be tempting to DIY everything you need, it will quickly become a big waste of your time and money if something goes wrong. Of course, you can pay a world-class vendor to correct mistakes at the last minute, but then you’ll be met with stress and another bill you didn’t plan for.

Focus on your strengths—whether they’re sewing, baking, drawing, calligraphy, floral design, etc. The same goes for the family and friends that you include in your projects as well.

Don’t Save Projects Until the Last Minute

There’s no denying that DIY projects are time-consuming. Whether you’re DIYing a good portion of your wedding decor or just an aspect or two, it’s important not to procrastinate. As soon as you’ve settled on a project list, it’s wise to get started. This ensures everything gets done before the big day, and allows everything to look well put together rather than rushed. There’s no such thing as starting too early.

DIY Wedding Inspiration

DIY Wedding Invitations

While wedding invitations are a small part of your special day, they can be expensive. Who knew that paper and printing costs could add up so fast? Luckily, there are many different options when it comes to invites and stationery. Often, the most cost-efficient option is to do your own designing and printing using Photoshop or Canva (which has premade templates you can edit in a pinch). However, this can be time-consuming.

If you don’t consider yourself a graphic design pro, online options such as Minted or Shutterfly offer gorgeous templates at reasonable prices. They both frequently offer discounts as well.

Lighting

One thing that can really take a wedding up a notch is custom lighting–which doesn’t come cheap. Everything from the bulbs you use to where your candles are placed can make or break your wedding. Sound dramatic? It’s not.

Wedding lighting will help people see where they’re going and light the wedding photos you’ll cherish forever. With proper lighting, you can keep the party going even after the sun sets.

There are many options when it comes to lighting that you can easily create yourself. It’s important to keep the lingo in mind so you don’t end up with bright beams when you were really dreaming of a soft natural ambiance. Here are a few of the most popular options for that perfect glow:

  • Uplights – Uplighting is created when lights are placed on the floor and turned upwards towards the ceiling to create a soft glow. Many venues will offer this as a premium, but at $1,000-$3,000, it’s not the cheapest upgrade. That’s where DIY Uplighting comes in. For only $17 a light, you can save hundreds of dollars by renting these multi-colored LED lights. Once your wedding is over, repack all of the lights and drop them back off to USPS with the prepaid shipping label. It doesn’t get much easier than that
  • Ceiling of lights aka Twinkle Lights – If your wedding is taking place outdoors, a “ceiling” of lights is an incredibly easy way to add a romantic touch while keeping things lit. They create the look of a starry night even when the sun is setting. Hang these stringed lights from trees, tent corners, etc. You can find solar-powered options like these on Amazon for as low as $15
  • Lanterns – Lanterns look beautiful in open-air tropical settings. You can find a pack of 5 paper lanterns for under $15 on Amazon
  • Candles – Candles are one of the easiest ways to make a space feel warm, welcoming, and picturesque. They’re also extremely budget-friendly. If you’re afraid of having open flames, combine flameless tealights and tapered candles throughout your space
  • Hanging lights. Hanging large pendants–such as Edison bulbs–from greenery, arches, and tree branches instantly upgrades an outdoor seating area and provides an intimate glow.

Signs

Having various wedding signs posted around your wedding is helpful for your guests. Wedding signs can communicate your ceremony schedule, direct parking, welcome guests, or showcase a specialty cocktail. You can create your own DIY signs using wood, acrylic, glass, old window panes, or chalkboard–just to name a few.

There are a few things to remember when creating the signage for your nuptials:

  • Consider the lettering – Are you a pro calligrapher? Try your hand out! If you’re not comfortable, try using stencils. You can also use decals using a Cricut machine. This takes away the guesswork of hand-painting
  • Your Color PaletteSignage is one of the easiest ways to incorporate your wedding colors. If you’re looking for ways to add a pop, this is it
  • Be Unique – While it may be tempting to recreate a sign that you found on Pinterest, be sure that it matches your wedding’s style, theme, and colors. Don’t copy it just because you think it’s cute. This will ensure you won’t regret it once your big day is over

Wedding Flowers

Florists train for years and know flowers inside and out. That’s what makes them so good at their jobs. While it may seem simple to throw a few flowers together and call it a bouquet, it requires a lot more work than that.

However, if you’re creative (and very patient), you can create your own floral arrangements. To succeed, we have a few pieces of advice.

  • Keep it simple – Arranging florals is a science. You might be a pro at arranging flowers for your home but creating dozens of centerpieces, bouquets, and other arrangements is tricky. Think lots of greenery, small jars or vases, and one or two types of flowers
  • Consider the season – You may have your heart set on a particular bloom for months but consider the season your wedding takes place in. If that flower is not in season but you consider it a must-have, DIYing your florals is not a wise decision–as this may require importing flowers
  • Think about your clothing – Colorful flowers with deep hues, berries, or pollen can stain your clothing. The last thing you want is a large red stain on your dress before the ceremony even begins
  • Take a workshop – This is the most crucial piece of advice that we can give you. Before you start arranging, take a workshop or two. Make a day of it with your wedding party and learn different techniques that you can use for your special day. They’re informative but—most importantly—fun! It may also be smart to watch a Youtube video or TikTok or two (or ten)

Junebug Tip: Use BloomsyBox, a flower subscription company, for your DIY wedding florals. You choose what flowers you want and get them hand-delivered to your door. They even offer dozens of pre-made bouquets. Junebug readers get 10% off with the code JUNEBUG

DIY Wedding Centerpieces

Centerpieces are one of the most visual parts of your wedding reception. They are also one of the most challenging because there are so many of them. If making dozens of floral arrangements overwhelms you, there are many different options for centerpieces. There’s no rule that says centerpieces have to be flowers, after all. Include items that are special to you and your spouse, such as books, mismatched glassware, lamps, lanterns, or geometric table décor.

Ceremony Backdrops

Your backdrop serves as a focal point and frames the most important part of the day—the ceremony. It also happens to be a great canvas to flex those creative muscles. Some of our favorites wedding backdrops include:

  • Drapery
  • Floral installation
  • PVC pipe arch
  • A free-standing wooden wall
  • Strips of multi-colored fabric

Seating Chart

Your seating chart is one sign that your guests are guaranteed to look at, so it’s important that it matches your color palette and theme flawlessly. Whether you’re looking for elegant, bohemian, or rustic, there’s a DIY option. One of the easiest options is to print the table numbers and names and place them on the display of your choice. However, if you’re up for the challenge, there are plenty of more complex options to recreate out there. Need some inspiration? Check out our Pinterest board that features some incredible seating charts from our real couples.

Reception Bar

Having an open bar is a surefire way to keep the party going all night long. But alcohol can be pricey. If you’re having a smaller affair, consider having a self-serve bar with bottles on ice. You can display it in multiple fun ways too–such as filling a kayak full of ice or setting up a table with ice basins. Still want a bar with bartenders? If your venue allows it, bring in the alcohol from a wholesale store like Costco or Sam’s Club. It’s just important to be mindful that you get enough so you don’t run out halfway through the reception.

Photobooth

Photobooths are one of the easiest additions to create for your wedding and they make for great entertainment for your guests (while also being a great favor). And the best part? You don’t need fancy equipment or an expensive team to make the perfect photobooth.

If you want your guests to strike a pose, follow these six tips to create a photo booth that will fit your design aesthetic and won’t bust your budget:

  • Get creative with the backdrop – Your backdrop should not be complicated. It can be anything from a faux flower wall put together on plywood boards to a chalkboard to a neon sign to macrame
  • Light it up as much as possible – Unless you’re a pro photographer, you’re better off not fiddling with your camera’s flash and exposure settings. Instead, make sure that your photo booth area is very well-lit. If using lights or lamps of some sort, use bulbs that are marked for “daylight.” You’ll find that these have a color temperature of about 5000k
  • Set it up in a highly visible place – The whole point of a photo booth is to capture fun moments with your guests. They can’t do that if the booth is hard to find. Try to avoid tucking it in a corner or putting it in a separate room. Instead, think of it as another focal point in your reception design
  • Use props – The more props, the better. Etsy is great for finding signs, cutouts, and masks. You can also find other goodies such as hats, wigs, jewelry, and other accessories at thrift stores or costume shops
  • Create a hashtag – We’re sure you’ve heard of wedding hashtags by now. It’s one of the easiest ways to be able to collect all of the photos taken by your guests. There’s a likely chance that they will share their photo booth pictures on social media so having a hashtag that they can use will make finding them a piece of cake
  • Use a Polaroid camera – If you’re looking for a low-tech way to have physical copies of your guests’ photos, encourage the use of Polaroid cameras. Once printed, have them tape them into a guestbook or place it in a box. You can also use a Polaroid printer to print photos off of your guests’ smartphones. Whichever route you decide on, be sure to have plenty of extra batteries and film on hand

Wedding Favors

Wedding favors are the simplest item to include in your DIY wedding. Rather than spend money on a favor that your guests are going to be too tired (or drunk) to remember, thank your friends and family for attending with one of these DIY options:

  • Homemade candles
  • Bath soak
  • Soap
  • Jam or honey
  • Hangover kits
  • Succulents
  • Baked dessert (cookies, candy, brownies, etc.)
  • Wildflower seeds
  • Mini bottles of alcohol (champagne, your favorite liquor, canned wine, etc.)
  • Hot chocolate kits

Whatever it is you decide to give, make it true to who you are as a couple—whether it ties in with your heritage, favorite snack, etc.—and matches your theme. That way you’ll avoid giving something random that you think guests may or may not potentially enjoy.

Whether you’re working with a tight wedding budget or you simply enjoy the endless possibilities that DIYing brings, there are many ideas you can incorporate to create the DIY wedding of your dreams. We hope this guide inspired you and that you’re ready to tackle any project you’ve been thinking about.  Want to see these do-it-yourself details in action? Intimate and Romantic Iceland Destination Wedding

June 12, 2023 | justine

Jennifer and Jacob made the exciting decision to have an Iceland destination wedding, hoping to bring their loved ones from all over the United States together. The couple had a clear vision in mind: to create a warm and romantic atmosphere, but they needed help figuring out how to bring it to life. Luckily, they had the support of an experienced and trusted team of vendors, and with their guidance, everything fell into place beautifully.

While browsing their photographer’s portfolio, the pair accidentally stumbled across their dream ceremony venue. The cliffside location with panoramic coastal views stole their hearts, and they couldn’t resist exchanging their vows. To complete the romantic vibe, they focused on ground florals. Their talented florist worked their magic for their restaurant reception, transforming the space with lush floral arrangements, black and gold settings, taper candles, and enchanting greenery installations

Their Iceland destination wedding was a true masterpiece, with stunning portraits against misty waterfalls and otherworldly landscapes. Luckily, talented Junebug member Jane Iskra expertly captured all the precious moments. If you’re contemplating the idea of forgoing a big wedding and having a smaller celebration in your dream city or country, this is the inspiration you’ve been waiting for.

The Couple:

Jennifer and Jacob

The Wedding:

Matur og Drykkur, Reykjavík, Iceland

The Key Role Of Their Wedding Stylist In Their Iceland Destination Wedding

Because we had a destination wedding and a smaller wedding party, we wanted the overall feeling to be quite cozy. We had a general idea of what style we liked and how we wanted the wedding day to feel, but we needed help conceptualizing those ideas further. Our fantastic planner heard our cries for help and pointed us toward hiring a wedding stylist. Our ideas fully evolved when we hired Wonderlust Events. I remember feeling a weight lifted off my shoulders after our first meeting with her and later receiving the first mood board from her. We said, “Yep, she totally nailed it.”

A Serendipitous Choice: How They Discovered Their Dream Ceremony Venue and Reception Space

After finding our photographer, we were scrolling through her past work when I came across a photo that made me audibly gasp. We reached out to her to inquire about the exact location. We knew we had to see it in person before deciding on it as our ceremony venue. After conducting a site visit, we fell head over heels in love with it and couldn’t envision getting married anywhere else. As for our reception venue, it was a last-minute decision. Our original plan fell through, prompting us to seek assistance from our planner and stylist. They discovered the most incredible cozy restaurant that had everything we were looking for. Unfortunately, we never saw the space before our wedding day, but it was absolutely magical and perfect. It was as if it was meant to be.

Emotional Highlights: Private Vows And The Magical Transformation Of The Reception Space

So many parts of our day stick out as precious moments. The most memorable–and the one we both cherish equally–is when we read our vows privately after the ceremony. It was an incredible moment and one of the few times that day where it felt like it was just the two of us, apart from our photo and video team, who were there to capture the moment. A quick honorable mention goes out to when we saw the reception space for the first time. I had quite the unexpected happy cry about the florals and the tablescape.

Navigating Wedding Planning And Letting Go Of The Small Details

If I could go back in time, I would tell myself that one month into planning, you need to stop panicking about what glassware you need on the table. You don’t need to stress over the smaller things before caring for the bigger items. It’s hard not to get wrapped up in the never-ending to-do lists. But my advice is to take it day by day and have faith that everything will be sorted out in the end, glassware included.

Creating Meaningful Connections Among Their Loved Ones At Their Iceland Destination Wedding

Before our wedding, our families and many of our friends unfortunately never had the chance to meet. Due to living in different corners of the U.S. What we are most proud of is being able to bring all of our close loved ones together. Under one roof and witness them getting to know each other. Seeing important people in our lives laughing, dancing, drinking, and singing together meant the world to us. The day before the wedding, we arranged for everyone to meet at the Sky Lagoon to enjoy an afternoon together as an icebreaker before the rehearsal dinner later that evening. Many people approached us and expressed their appreciation for our effort to acquaint everyone with one another.

Expressing Their Appreciation Through Thoughtful Favors

We gave out wedding favors as a small token of appreciation for our guests’ commitment to witnessing our marriage. Practical items that could be utilized and remind them of their memorable journey to Iceland. Traveling internationally for a wedding takes a special group of people, so we knew we wanted to provide favors. We crafted welcome wallets for each guest, which included a weekend itinerary and a personalized note from both of us. We distributed scented candles and Icelandic sea salt during the reception as souvenirs of their trip.

Outstanding Vendors That Made Their Dream Iceland Destination Wedding A Reality

A few standout individuals deserve special mention. Our planner and stylist, in particular, patiently dealt with my frantic emails while finding a new reception venue. Switching venues late in the planning phase caused significant stress, but they handled it gracefully. Additionally, our versatile florist proved to be a true jack of all trades. She did craft breathtaking floral arrangements and played a pivotal role in sourcing the glassware and flatware for our tables.  And despite not being obligated, our photographers extended their presence beyond the scheduled time to ensure we had a photo with each of our guests.

Wedding Catering Options Explained

May 16, 2023 | kailey

Image by May Iosotaluno. Keep reading on for wedding catering options

Location, decor, catering–there are many big decisions that go into bringing your dream wedding to life. For all the foodie couples, we’ve got you covered. From plated meals to food trucks, get ready to feast on endless wedding day catering options. We’re taking the stress out of planning by explaining all the info you need to know about wedding catering in one place.

Junebug Tip

Before choosing your caterer, you’ll need to have your venue booked and understand any limitations that they’ll have on the vendors you’ll be able to hire. If you’re unsure about how to find the perfect venue for your wedding, check out our venue guide. Then, come back and read through all of the options available to feed yourselves and your wedding guests.

How Much Does Wedding Catering Cost?

Before you figure out your catering, you may have a couple of questions–most importantly, how much it’s going to cost you. Of course, we can’t give you a straight answer because every wedding is different. However, According to The Knot, the average price in 2022 was $75 per person. However, you’ll find that it ranges from about $70-$80 depending on how many guests are attending.

Wedding Food Ideas

Once you’ve selected your venue, consider the type of meal you’d like to entertain your guests with. Keep these in mind on your catering journey to ensure that there’s no confusion between you, your wedding dream team, and your guests.

Plated Meals

If you’re looking for a formal, served meal, this option is for you. Plated meals typically include three courses: appetizer, entree, and dessert. Though this adds an intimate nature to your wedding, keep in mind this type of meal comes with extra planning and preparation—from formulating a seating chart to collecting guest’s food choices and dietary restrictions (typically from their RSVP). Then, you’ll need to communicate these to your caterer.

Passed Appetizers

Couples wanting a more relaxed reception—without sacrificing plentiful and delicious foods—should opt for a passed appetizer option. Typically passed appetizers are combined with the cocktail hour and include bite-sized snacks that are served by catering staff.

Hors D’oeuvres

From charcuterie tables—also known as grazing tables—to sliders, hor d’oeuvres have become a popular wedding food option. This is a perfect meal selection for couples looking to combine food presentation and taste to enhance their reception. Usually set in a buffet style, guests can come and go as they please and have the choice of endless food options. This is sure to add a relaxed vibe to any wedding day without having to sacrifice mouth-watering foods.

Cake and Punch

A fun and budget-friendly catering option is a “cake and punch” reception. Instead of serving your guests a full sit-down meal, you jump right to wedding cake and drinks—we’re all for skipping straight to dessert. This is a perfect option for late-night weddings or short and sweet celebrations.

Wedding Catering Options

You’ve selected the meal style fit for your wedding vibe and theme, now it’s time to determine execution. There are catering styles fit for every couple and every wedding size. Whether you want a hands-on catering experience or to assemble a team of industry professionals to take the reins, you’re sure to find a catering style here that is perfect for you.

Venues With In-House Catering

If you’re searching for ways to simplify your wedding planning process, some venues offer in-house catering. This style of catering means the venue takes full reign of the catering duties from setup to tear down and everything in between. No extra time needed to coordinate between the caterer and the venue—it’s already done for you. Of course, you’ll still be able to work with the in-house catering team on the menu.

DIY Catering

With weddings getting smaller, more couples are opting to DIY major elements of their weddings—like decor and food. Maybe you love cooking and want to prep the meal yourselves, or maybe you just want to save a little money. Whatever the reasoning may be, do-it-yourself catering is always an option. By going with a DIY approach you’re able to directly control the flavor and outcome without having to sacrifice quality.

Hire a Caterer

Hiring a top-notch caterer is one of the easiest ways to reduce your stress. A professional caterer will take care of the procurement, planning, cooking, and cleanup. The caterer will also impact your reception experience by limiting your wedding day work. This way, you can be present and soak up all of the memories. Consider reaching out to your favorite restaurant as a fun way to show off local dining to your guests.

Image by May Iosotaluno. See more of this real wedding here.

Food Trucks

If you’re dreaming of a relaxed reception vibe with a variety of food options, food trucks are an ideal catering option. This can also be an easy way to appease many different dietary restrictions and preferences. Whether you’ve got vegans or gluten-free guests, there are trucks for everyone. This style of catering also adds fun to any styled reception, not to mention the endless food options that are offered on wheels nowadays.

If you love the idea of having a buffet dinner but still want to bring in one of your favorite food trucks, have it come in as a late-night snack. Your guests will appreciate the extra bite to eat when they’ve got a couple of drinks in them.

Cocktail Party Reception

A cocktail party reception means skipping the meal and instead indulging in a variety of hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Cocktail party food opens the door to creativity. This can mean an oversized charcuterie table or passed appetizers. This reception food option is perfect for couples looking to customize every part of their reception—from the food options to the decor—and for couples that want their reception bar to be the main event.

There is no better way to kick off your marriage than with a reception that is authentically you. From the wedding catering options to the reception drinks, every element should be a reflection of you, your partner, and your union. Now that you’ve figured out food, it’s time to think about drinks. Elevate your party with these reception bar ideas that are the epitome of picture-worthy.

This Roundwood House Wedding Will Have You Ready To Go Across The Pond For Your Big Day

April 24, 2023 | justine

Karly and Ian wanted their special day to be like a fabulous dinner party, exuding a cozy and old-worldly ambiance. And with the help of their trusted vendor team, their celebration in Ireland was exactly how they envisioned it to be. Set in an early Georgian country house in the middle of a vast estate, they brought to life a dreamy Roundwood House wedding using a rich color palette, spectacular floral arrangements, and personal touches.

The firewood storage shed became a one-of-a-kind location for their ceremony, as they transformed the rustic stone structure into a romantic and enchanting setting for their private vows. With ethereal cloud-like pillars of blooming flowers and delicate dried foliage, the scene was straight out of a fairytale. For the reception that followed at the main house, they indulged in a wine-and-dine experience at a long table adorned with flickering candles, creating a warm and intimate ambiance.

If you’ve always dreamt of a magical and intimate wedding with your loved ones, you’re in for a treat! Just scroll down to check out this incredible Roundwood House wedding captured by the talented Pawel Bebenca. You’ll be amazed by all the beautiful details and special moments that unfolded on this special day.

The Couple:

Karly and Ian

The Wedding:

Roundwood House, Mountrath Co. Laois, Ireland

How The Bride Landed On Her Dream Dress

As a bride, I consider myself incredibly lucky. My best friend owns Lady Sycamore Bridal, a boutique in Rhode Island. I had the privilege of trying on dresses there multiple times. I tried on almost all of her dresses, kept coming back to one. While my friend carries many beautiful gowns, the decision was easy. I knew it was the one from the very first time I tried it on with my mom, mother-in-law, sister, and friend Molly. I wanted something classic yet edgy, and the accessories fell into place after that.

How Their Roundwood House Wedding Came To Be

When we first started talking with our planner, we told her we were looking for something that felt like a fabulous dinner party but happened to be where we got married. The venue was a priority for us, as most of our guests (including ourselves) had never been to Ireland before. We wanted a place that was old-worldly yet casual and cozy. With a lot of character that wouldn’t require excessive decor, just flowers and candles. Ideally, we also wanted a place where we could stay for the weekend. Roundwood House was the perfect fit. We had our ceremony in the most beautiful barn, cocktail hour in the main house, and dinner in the library.

Roundwood House Felt Like Home Away From Home

As a creative myself, our planner understood that our wedding couldn’t be just another photo shoot. She kept me grounded but also knew when to push the boundaries. Roundwood House was perfect—the furniture, architecture, and grounds felt like a cozy, everyday home. The hospitality from Hannah, Paddy, and their staff was exceptional. The Whileaways, our band, provided the perfect acoustic concert for our small wedding. It was a special and memorable experience for our 13 guests and us.

Exchanging Private Vows After Their Roundwood House Wedding Ceremony

One moment that was particularly special was when we exchanged vows, just the two of us, after the ceremony. There was no first look, as we had already legally married in the states. Our friend performed the ceremony, celebrated with our guests, and then Ian and I sat under our floral arch, surrounded by candles, and read our vows. The nerves were gone, and it was just us. So happy to be where we were, experiencing the day we had been dreaming about. Our photographer captured the moment, resulting in some of our favorite pictures.

Advice From The Newlyweds: You Won’t Regret Hiring A Wedding Planner

Consider hiring a wedding planner for both peace of mind and budget benefits (honestly, a planner likely saved us money in the long run). We were fortunate to find Love and Gatherings, who understood our style, kept us organized, and made planning a wedding from another country feasible.

Creating An Incredible Experience For Their Guests

We take immense pride in the fact that every single guest had an amazing time at our wedding. Our friends and family are still talking about it! They’re raving about the hospitality at Roundwood House, the delicious Smoked Trout Timbale with avocado and grapefruit, our incredibly talented band, The Whileaways, who learned .38 Special’s “Caught Up in You” for my aisle walk, the hot spiked cider and blankets for the ceremony, and the stunning florals. For many, it was their first time in Ireland. And they were able to make it a real adventure, exploring the country for the entire week.

Putting Together Local Welcome Bags With The Help Of Their Planner

Our planner was instrumental in coordinating the wedding favors. We provided custom tote bags filled with gifts from the Irish Design Shop in Dublin, including wooly socks, lip balm, scented candles, and soap—all made by local Irish makers and designers. After the wedding, we even stopped by the shop and stocked up on more candles because they smelled so good!

Elegant Cortal Gran Destination Wedding

April 16, 2023 | justine

Ade and Tome’s search for the perfect wedding venue throughout Europe finally ended when they stumbled upon Cortal Gran. The 15th-century medieval castle surrounded by sprawling apple tree fields stole their hearts at first sight. With the help of their trusted vendor team, they brought their wedding vision to life and created a spectacular event. Featuring a neutral color palette with pops of red, sleek decor and florals, and chic wedding fashion— their Cortal Gran destination wedding was a stunning blend of natural and elegant elements.

Set in a picture-perfect and shaded spot in the estate, the couple exchanged vows under a canopy of trees. They showcased the natural beauty of their surroundings by keeping the decor simple, with only a square arch adorned with thoughtfully placed arrangements and a leather couch at the altar as a focal point of their ceremony. The reception area, however, was a surprise for the guests as they were greeted with an incredible ceiling installation of cascading led lights and a sleek white tablescape with gold accents and candles.

The couple poured their hearts into every detail and added personal touches, making it one for the books. You’re in for a treat when you see all the gorgeous details captured by Andrea Ferrara. So keep scrolling and get ready to be in awe!

How Their Cortal Gran Destination Wedding Came To Be

My partner and I fell in love with Cortal Gran the moment we saw it, and we immediately contacted Un Dia Unico to make our dream wedding a reality. They created an incredible plan for organizing and decorating the event with excellent attention to detail. Our guests came from all over the world, so our wedding planner coordinated their arrival, threw a great pre-wedding event, and managed everything on the big day. And we also had a traditional Nigerian wedding in London a week before the main event in Spain. It was an absolute blast!

Designing The Wedding Decor To Create A Cohesive Guest Experience

Our top priority was creating an elegant atmosphere through well-thought-out decor that followed a consistent color scheme. We designed the signage to match this aesthetic, including the beautiful welcome sign that led guests to the stunning forest ceremony area. To make sure everyone stayed cool during the ceremony, we provided pai-pai fans for our guests to use. The cocktail area was surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, offering a breathtaking view of the Cortal Gran castle. The reception area was a delightful surprise for our guests, with a seating chart matching the wedding’s design and color scheme. The tables were adorned with beautiful golden plates, floral centerpieces, and candles, and the cascading led light curtains on the ceiling created a magical atmosphere.

Wedding Advice: Working With A Wedding Planner Is A Must

We highly recommend couples hire a wedding planner when planning their big day. It was absolutely essential for us. Our wedding planners guided us through every step leading up to the wedding. This allowed us to fully enjoy the months of preparation without any stress or worries. On the wedding day, we could relax and enjoy ourselves completely. They made everything run smoothly, and we enjoyed our special day to the fullest without any hiccups or stress. Our guests had a fantastic time.

Adding Personalized Touches Throughout Their Cortal Gran Destination Wedding Through Readings and Music

Throughout our celebration, our friends and family had the opportunity to share their favorite readings during the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. It was heartwarming to have our loved ones contribute to our special day in this way. As we exchanged our vows, we were serenaded by a talented saxophonist who played a customized set of songs that truly captured the essence of our relationship. The live music created an intimate and unforgettable atmosphere we will always treasure. For the rest of the wedding, a DJ kept everyone on the dance floor, playing an eclectic mix of tunes that kept the party going all night long.

This Los Lavaderos at La Quinta Real Wedding Was Bursting with Color

April 15, 2023 | justine

Shelby and Joey were set on a Los Lavaderos at La Quinta Real wedding, and the reasons made themselves obvious immediately. Aside from having a special connection to the location, it’s a breathtaking city with a rich culture and great food. Set in one of the most beautiful historical spots in the area, their destination celebration was bursting with color, whimsical decor, and playful energy!

Surrounded by pomegranate trees in front of the stone gazebo, the couple tied the knot under a chuppah made from colorful fans and ribbon tassels. It was the perfect contrast to the formal setting. After the ceremony, they kicked off the festivities with a traditional wedding parade and walked along the cobblestone streets to the reception venue. It was a magical transition from the streets as they treated their guests to a stunning and romantic setting filled with candles and vibrant lanterns. The atmosphere didn’t stay serene for very long as the mezcal flowed freely and they danced all night long!

With every detail reflecting their love for each other and for the city they chose to celebrate in,  this couple’s Los Lavaderos at La Quinta Real wedding was a dream come true,. This is all thanks to the behind-the-scenes hard work of their trusted team. And if you and your partner have been dreaming of saying your “I dos” in a beautiful faraway place and need ideas, keep scrolling. You’re not going to want to miss these beautiful images captured by Junebug member Carlos Elizondo.

Why A Los Lavaderos at La Quinta Real Wedding

Having our wedding in Oaxaca was a threshold decision and one that was made very easily. We’re from different cities (New York and Chicago), so we figured lots of guests would be traveling regardless of where we had it, so why not have it further away? We both always loved the idea of a destination. You have more time to hang with all your favorite people, all your favorite people get to hang with your other favorite people. And by the time the actual wedding rolls around, everyone’s met one another, you’ve had a chance to spend time with everyone and it’s one big, giant, cohesive party.

They Had A Meaningful Connection To Their Wedding Location

Our first “big” trip together was to Oaxaca. We had both been to Oaxaca before but had spent our time in the city or on the beach. On that first big trip, we spent lots of time traveling around rural areas and super small villages, meeting mezcaleros and getting a unique feel for the region and its people. After that trip, I joined the board of directors of an organization called S.A.C.R.E.D. (founded by our friend Lou, who led us around Oaxaca on that fateful trip) that is focused on improving life in the regions of Oaxaca and elsewhere in Mexico where mezcal and agave spirits are made. We have such an affinity for the culture, the people, the place, and of course the food and drink, so it seemed like a natural choice, albeit a somewhat inconvenient destination. That just meant that all our friends that made the trip wanted to be there, and they showed up.

They Wanted A Fun-Filled Los Lavaderos at La Quinta Real Wedding

Our main goals were to keep things light and bright and unselfconscious, and we put together a mood board that inspired our thinking. We wanted to dance for our first dance (Joey is an incredible dancer) and went for an unconventional, disco-inspired first dance song—”Adore You” by Jessie Ware. Our tables featured baby agaves that were replanted in mezcal-producing communities after the wedding through S.A.C.R.E.D. We wanted to pour mezcal made by the folks we’d met on that first trip, including some pechuga (a festive mezcal often consumed on celebratory occasions) and Lou came through for us in making that all a reality.

Setting The Tone With Their Wedding Invitations

We love the vibrancy of Oaxaca, you can’t help but have an incredible time there. We wanted to piggyback on that and keep our wedding bright, fun, and not at all stuffy. Our invites were inspired by papel picado, cut paper bunting often strung about in Mexico for celebratory occasions. We wanted an indicator of the unabashedly festive vibes awaiting our guests in Oaxaca.

Leaning On Their Wedding Planner To Bring Their Wedding Vision To Life

Since we were choosing a destination quite far away with a native language neither of us speaks, we knew we’d need lots of help. We received a recommendation for our planners, Oaxaca Destination Weddings, and after our first call with them, we were sold. The ODW team was nothing short of fabulous. They got a great feel for us and our vibe from the get-go and came equipped with suggestions and opinions, while always honoring our preferences and intentions. Our planners were truly a godsend. We were so distracted by everything going on in our lives, but they kept us on task and worked with us on all aspects of our incredible weekend, including helping us pour mezcal delivered to us in gasoline containers straight from the source into the bottles from which it would be poured liberally at our reception.

Personalizing Their Ceremony By Incorporating Jewish Elements

Our ceremony was led by our friend Marcus. The whole thing felt like us, as we and Marcus built every aspect of it and weren’t beholden to any particular routine or regimen. We incorporated a couple of traditional Jewish elements, including circling (though we chose to each circle one another, and then circle together) and the smashing of the glass at the end. My sister-in-law and Joey’s sister each did a reading. In Joey’s sister’s case, the reading was made at his parent’s wedding. We wrote one another “schpiels” (the order of reading determined, in customary fashion, by a game of rock paper scissors), while Marcus wrote and led us in vows that were simple and heartfelt. The guitarist played an acoustic version of “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for our processional and “Love Cats” by the Cure (which Joey played when he proposed in a callback to our first-ever communication) during our recessional. Our son was front row, delivering highly enthusiastic claps at somehow perfectly-timed intervals during the whole ceremony.

They Kicked Off The Festivities With A Traditional Mexican Wedding Parade

The calenda was magical! We left our ceremony and were met outside by a brass band, dancers, giant paper-mâché puppets of us, a huge balloon with our names on it, and, of course, bamboo shot glasses to be worn around our necks to drink mezcal while we paraded. We danced and limboed through the streets, drinking and being merry. The parade ended outside of our reception venue, and looking through the doors when we arrived at Proyecto Murguia, into the atmosphere our decorator had created was one of those moments we’ll never forget. One of our friends loudly proclaimed “wow, I want to go in there,” and another responded, “I think we are going in there.” Cloud cover had begun to build during the calenda, and it started to pour about four minutes after we all made it inside the venue, creating an electric feeling under the tent, all together in this otherworldly environment.

Having Their Son Present Was The Most Special Moment Of Their Los Lavaderos at La Quinta Real Wedding

Having our son there was not something that we had envisioned when we started planning our wedding in 2019, but it was so special for him to be a part of it. We decided to forego a wedding party and had our siblings walk our son down the aisle, with each of us accompanied by both parents. He was somewhat overwhelmed for parts of the evening, but he was able to take part in our calenda and share a first dance with mama before he was whisked off to bed. The only thing missing from the day was our perfect pup, Quiote, who is named after the stalk of an agave plant and a now-closed restaurant in our Logan Square neighborhood of the same name, which is where we had our first date.

Wedding Advice: Be Sure To Plan For A Wedding That You And Your Partner Will Enjoy Every Moment Of

With the countless details you have to consider for your guests, as well as the logistics and aesthetics of the day, it can be easy to lose sight of your actual experience. Design a wedding you’re going to love. Everyone has more fun when the newlyweds are having a blast, so make sure you’re setting yourselves up for that. Do whatever you can to be sure you’ll be present in the moment. The little things won’t matter at the end of the day, but you’ll want to look back and know that you enjoyed every single second of it and spent real, quality time with the people you love most in the world. Don’t rush through things you don’t want to rush. And don’t dwell on things that you think you’re “supposed” to do but aren’t meaningful to you. Lastly, leave ample time to be relaxed and unscripted with your friends and family.

Having A Themed Welcome Reception Was The Best Way To Start The Celebration

We’ve always loved a theme party, so from the beginning, we were set on having one for our welcome reception. We settled on a Lotería-inspired dress code for the occasion. We and our son were dressed as the sun, moon, and stars. Our guests got into it, dressing as roses, spiders, mermaids, deer, various fruit, and even death. As we suspected, it was an amazing ice breaker—though our friends are all quite gregarious, it was awesome to watch the room come together, deer chatting up a shrimp in one corner, a violin, and drum in another, all friends of ours who hadn’t previously met one another.

Gifting Their Guests Local Crafted Mezcal Cups That Doubled As Table Decor

We gave each of our guest’s black clay mezcal copitas made in San Bartolo Coyotepec, which were left at each place setting. We wanted our guests to have a proper vessel from which to drink mezcal both during and after the wedding and wanted to support local artisans as well. Unfortunately, a good number of them didn’t make it back home since they were used just a little too well at the wedding.
