Planning your wedding ceremony can be one of the most daunting yet most rewarding parts of the entire wedding planning process. You get to choose readings, music, florals, seating options, backdrops, and everything in between–all to craft the perfect day to profess your love to your new spouse. Is there anything better? If you already feel overwhelmed or just aren’t sure where to start, take a breath and feel rest assured that you’re in the right place! We’ve rounded up all our best ceremony planning resources and guides to walk you through every step.

Setting The Foundation

There are few things more special and heartfelt than writing your wedding ceremony with your partner. This is the reason behind the entire celebration in the first place, so take extra care in crafting a ceremony that speaks to you as a couple. There are so many different ways of creating the perfect wedding ceremony and even more different tips and opinions. Start with these three basics to set a good foundation, and let the rest of the pieces fall naturally into place.

Order

Unless you’re having a religious or cultural wedding ceremony for which the order is set, the first step will be to figure out the order of your ceremony. Traditionally, a non-religious wedding ceremony would include these moments:

There are some obvious moments you absolutely cannot leave out, such as the vows, ring exchange, and first kiss. But most of the other moments can be changed, moved around, or removed entirely depending on your style and preferences. Think about what’s important to you and what kind of ceremony will be most impactful to you, and plan the order to fit that vision.

Themes

Your wedding ceremony should focus on at least three important themes: your past, your present, and your future as a couple. When planning your ceremony with your officiant, be sure to give them insight into each of these areas of your life so they can integrate those into the overall story they will tell. Keep your readings focused on those themes to continue that story throughout the entire ceremony. Give thanks to the people who have gotten you where you are, to the blessings you’re enjoying in the present, and be optimistic about what the future holds.

Timing

The sweet spot for a non-denominational wedding ceremony is between 20 and 25 minutes. If it’s shorter than 20 minutes, you’ll likely feel rushed, and your guests might leave feeling confused and disappointed. If it’s longer than 25 minutes, you run the risk of losing everyone’s attention. Try to stay within that window, and you’ll be golden.

Personalizing Each Moment

After you’ve set the foundation by figuring out the order, how to integrate your themes, and the timing, it’s time to personalize each moment of the ceremony. This includes the vows, the readings, the unity ceremony, the music, and even the grand exit. Most of these personalizations will be easier to implement in non-denominational weddings, but they can also be added to religious and cultural weddings. We’ve also provided some religious and culture-specific tips to add some personalization as well!

Vows

If you’ve followed us for a long time, you know that we strongly believe you really should write your own vows. That’s why we’ve gathered some unique tips for writing your wedding vows, along with 30 touching examples to use as a framework to make it as easy as possible. After all, the true purpose of your wedding day is to promise your lives to each other, and we think the best way to do that is in your own words.

That being said, some churches do require couples to recite a standard set of vows to make the wedding official. And, while there’s really no way to get around that, we do have a tip for couples who want a religious ceremony but also want to write their own vows: do both! During your wedding ceremony, recite the standard vows that your church requires. During your first look or post-ceremony portrait session, read the vows you wrote to each other. If there’s anything better than writing your own vows, it’s stepping away from the rush of the wedding day to read those vows privately with the love of your life. You’ll appreciate having that moment for just the two of you when all is said and done.

Junebug Tip: Looking for the perfect book to write those heartfelt words? Then you need one of these wedding vow books. They make the perfect souvenir from your big day that you can look back on for years to come.

Planning Your Wedding Ceremony Readings

Aside from writing your own vows, adding a ceremony reading is one of the best ways to personalize your wedding ceremony. Ask one or two family members or close friends to read passages that reflect your views on marriage and/or your hopes for the future. These can be totally unexpected wedding ceremony readings, such as quotes from movies or books, or they can be more traditional and classic, like one of your favorite romantic love poems. The key is to choose readings that fit the vibe of your day and the statement you two want to make about love and marriage.

Unity Ceremony

The unity ceremony serves as a visual representation of the couple joining their separate lives into one, which is why it usually takes place after the couple has exchanged vows. While this is not an official requirement for a wedding ceremony, it is a beautiful, symbolic way to come together as newlyweds. While many couples opt for the traditional candle lighting or unity sand ceremony–which we always love–a lot of couples are going the more non-traditional route with unity ceremonies that range from making a PB&J sandwich to taking a shot. If you’re looking for unique ideas, check out these 15 sweet and sentimental unity ceremonies from some of our favorite real weddings.

Music

The beauty of wedding ceremony music is that it can be as elaborate or as minimal as you want. You can also keep it super traditional or go out on a limb with whimsical, unexpected tunes. This is your opportunity to create a soundtrack for part of your life, so have fun with it! Here are a few key moments that most couples choose to highlight with music:

If music is a top priority for you and you plan to include it during your ceremony, we highly recommend you invest in live musicians. Even if ceremony music isn’t a high priority, we can’t talk enough about how special it is to have live music on your wedding day. Of course, if your budget doesn’t allow for it, or you’re planning to use just a processional and/or recessional song, a recording is a good alternative–just be sure to find someone reliable to press play.

Planning Your Exit

There’s no better way to mark the end of your ceremony and the beginning of the party than with an unforgettable exit. Flower petals, confetti, sparklers, and bubbles are all great options for your guests to literally shower you with love as you walk–or dance–down the aisle as newlyweds. Just be sure to check with your venue to see if they have any restrictions or clean-up fees!

Religious and Cultural Considerations

If you’re planning a religious or culturally traditional wedding, you might think you have no room to personalize your ceremony. But, we’ve seen time and time again that, with a little creativity, most couples are able to find at least one way to make their ceremony their own. If, for example, you’re having a religious ceremony for which you can’t write your own vows and have to use readings from scripture, choose a totally unique and unexpected unity ceremony. If you’re following cultural traditions for your wedding, choose non-traditional music that is meaningful to your relationship. Just because you’re having a religious or traditional wedding ceremony doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to personalize it. You might just need to get a little creative.

Design & Décor

At long last, you’ve made it to the best part of planning your wedding ceremony: the design and décor. From arches and backdrops to welcome signs to aisle markers, there are so many details that go into transforming your venue into your perfect ceremony space. Yes, there’s a lot to consider, but we’ve got this wedding décor checklist to help you nail every detail. We’ve also broken down the key elements of your ceremony décor below.

Arches and Backdrops

Of all the decor you can add to your ceremony, arches and backdrops just might be the most important. Not only are they beautiful stand-alone pieces, but they frame the most important aspect of your entire day–you and your partner. We’ve seen everything from macrame to wood to wreaths to copper pipes. We may be biased, but we love them all! We could go on and on about how these small details make a world of difference for your ceremony, but we’d rather show you instead. Head over to our ceremony Pinterest board to see all of the arches and backdrops from our real weddings.

Seating

When choosing seating options for your wedding ceremony, be sure to consider both form and function. If you’re trying to achieve a specific look, get inspired by these unique ceremony chairs that are as beautiful as they are practical. When planning the space, do your guests a favor, and don’t try to pack the chairs as closely together as possible. Give everyone a little breathing room between each other and between the altar and the first row. You’ll also want to take into account the people sitting on the furthest sides or in the back row. Will they be able to see everything? If not, use a semi-circle or full-circle design rather than a straight-row design to ensure everyone has a clear view of the altar.

Once the chairs are set, it’s time to add some pretty dimension to that aisle. To elevate your ceremony space, check out these wedding aisle decor ideas.

Signage

While there is typically much less signage needed for a ceremony than for a reception, there are a few key signs you should try to include in your ceremony décor:

  • Welcome Sign – to greet your guests in style
  • Seating Sign – to let your guests know they don’t need to choose a side
  • Program Sign – if you’re not printing order-of-events programs
  • Unplugged Ceremony Sign – to politely remind your guests to put away their phones

For the full list of wedding signs to include on your big day, save this handy wedding sign checklist.

Programs

Wedding ceremony programs are totally optional, but they are a nice way to tell your guests what to expect and a bit about the wedding party. If you decide to print programs, they should include your names, the wedding date and location, names of your wedding party, officiant’s name, and the order of events. If you’re including traditions or readings you’d like to explain, this would be the place to do that, as well. Etsy and Minted have lots of beautiful, customizable templates to choose from.

Lighting

For most couples, their wedding ceremony will be lit by natural sunlight, either outside or through the windows of their venue. That’s why we recommend couples plan their wedding timeline around the sun. When tying the knot, you’ll want to be sure that you’re properly lit, that your photos will turn out beautifully, and that neither you nor your guests are blinded by the harsh sunlight.

If you’re planning an evening ceremony or your venue doesn’t provide sufficient natural light, you’ll need to ensure your venue does have other forms of lighting or you’ll need to add your own. If you’re not sure where to start, that’s okay. We’ve got the ultimate guide to wedding lighting to help you decide what’s right for you.

Final Thoughts on Planning Your Wedding Ceremony

We know that this is a lot of information, but we have just a few final tips to make sure your wedding ceremony goes off without a hitch:

  • Don’t forget the rings
  • Hand-write your vows rather than read from your phone – It will look better in photos, and you won’t risk feedback in the sound system
  • Get to know your officiant ahead of time — It will make you and them more comfortable, and they’ll be better prepared to personalize your ceremony
  • Hire someone to run the ceremony – Even if you don’t want a wedding planner or coordinator for anything else, trust us, you’ll want someone else keeping track of all the details and the timeline
  • Stay present – At some point during the ceremony, take a minute to breathe and look out at all the people who showed up to love and support you

We’re certain that this guide will help you plan your wedding ceremony in a way that exceeds your wildest dreams. You’ve got your ultimate checklist for the wedding; now it’s time to get to planning the perfect wedding reception!

Chic and Colorful Masseria San Michele Destination Wedding

March 1, 2024 | justine

Emma and Adam dreamed of a wedding where everyone could enjoy themselves and discover the beauty of Puglia. They wanted their special day to reflect their personalities, with a relaxed atmosphere in the countryside, surrounded by their closest friends and family. Their Masseria San Michele destination wedding blended timeless elegance with a colorful palette, stunning floral arrangements, and chic fashion, making it everything they hoped for and more. It was the perfect recipe for a truly unforgettable celebration.

Their courtyard ceremony, surrounded by stunning floral arrangements, became a deeply meaningful moment as they exchanged vows. The festivities continued with a delightful garden reception featuring a long, winding table decorated with abundant flowers, foliage, and candles, all illuminated by the soft twinkle of lights overhead.

Their special day was a perfect blend of timeless elegance and their own personal flair. Thankfully, Lato Photography was on hand to expertly capture every exquisite detail and cherished moment of their magical celebration. Keep scrolling to experience the beauty and charm of their wedding day all over again.

How Their Masseria San Michele Destination Wedding Came To Be

From the outset, we were confident about one thing: our wedding had to reflect who we were and spread joy to our loved ones. We aimed to bring smiles to their faces from the moment they arrived in our special corner of the world. This place holds a unique significance for us, inspiring the relaxed, chic, and fun atmosphere we envisioned. Surprising many with the vibrant colors we incorporated into the day, we carefully balanced them to harmonize with the venue while delivering impactful moments. Our mantra to our wedding planner was simple: let’s have fun. Though she may have thought we wanted a circus, our goal was simply to ensure everyone had a fantastic time and felt cared for, especially given the number of guests traveling from around the globe, some of whom we hadn’t seen in over five years. Our top priority was making them feel welcome in a place that has welcomed us so warmly over the years.

Choosing Modern Elegance and Sustainable Wedding Style

My look was inspired by the NewWhite bridal aesthetic, which is modern and cool with a feminine touch sprinkled on top. I also found a lot of inspiration from Spanish designers such as Poydel. He is a Spanish designer who creates stunning looks. Unfortunately, multiple trips to Madrid were not feasible for him to create the dress, but I kept that vibe in mind throughout. I kept the accessories simple with two gold bangles and gold dome earrings and let the dress speak for itself. It’s straightforward and timeless but has an architectural dimension to the top that I just love. The day’s make-up was pared back and focused on light contouring and bronzed tones. Adam’s suit was a beautiful brown linen that he would be 100% able to wear again, which was essential to us. We didn’t want too much waste as part of our wedding, so we wanted to ensure we could re-wear as much as possible. I’m already planning how to turn my wedding dress into something I can wear again.

A Personalized Ceremony Script and Handwritten Vows

We had one of our best friends, Laurence, write the whole ceremony by asking us about how we met, our love story, and stories from our six-year relationship. Neither of us knew what to expect, and it was absolute perfection. We also wrote our own vows, which were terrifying but were amazing. It was the talking point for our guests throughout the weekend.

Wedding Wisdom: Balancing Inspiration with Personal Preferences

The best advice I share with all couples getting married is to look for inspiration and have fun, but don’t get lost in the social media bubble. Depending on your circumstances, it can get you down looking at things that don’t fit your venue, budget, or even the wedding you want. So put the social media down after a few first weeks of planning and go with what brings a smile to your face, not necessarily what will bring one to social media.

A Destination Wedding Journey Through Puglia

As it was a destination wedding, we wanted people to feel taken care of and get the opportunity to explore Puglia from multiple vantage points. We went to Ostuni, the white city, for our welcome drinks and celebrated in the windy cobbled streets to welcome our guests. The wedding day highlighted the simplicity and excellent cuisine of the region with freshly made mozzarella, meats, cheeses, and delicious fish dishes. We ended the weekend with a pool party at our venue, and it was the perfect send-off for our friends and family to relax in the Puglian sun with a pizza and beer in hand. Everyone left smiling and truly happy to have experienced the weekend with us all.

This Autostrada Wedding is Proof Restaurant Weddings Can Be Breathtaking

February 29, 2024 | justine

Jenny and Trevor envisioned a small, intimate celebration centered around delicious food and drinks. Their goal was to create a relaxed atmosphere, allowing ample time for guests to mingle and enjoy themselves. Rather than opting for a traditional wedding, they aimed for the ambiance of a sophisticated dinner party. By focusing on what truly mattered to them and cutting out unnecessary stress, they curated their Autostrada wedding to perfection.

Wanting a chic and cozy wedding space, the downtown restaurant played a crucial part in bringing their vision to life. The design inspiration stemmed from pieces that the bride and groom knew they wanted to wear. The bride showcased a sleek look—a chic white gown with a stunning cape for a classic touch, while the groom rocked a white tuxedo jacket inspired by James Bond’s iconic look. To add an extra pop of personality, unique arrangements in bold red adorned every part of the space.

If you love the idea of modern elegance with a touch of charm, you’re in for a treat with the stunning photos taken by Junebug member Meghan Hemstra. Keep scrolling to see how couples are getting creative to celebrate their love in unique ways.

The Couple:

Jenny and Trevor

The Wedding:

Autostrada, Vancouver, Canada

Creating a Stylish Statement by Drawing Inspiration from Unique Fashion Pieces

The inspiration came from items we were set on wearing: a pair of Mondo Mondo earrings, the Cardinal earrings in gold with red stones (which perfectly matched the after-party outfit), and James Bond’s iconic white tuxedo jacket with a red carnation from Goldfinger 1967. Our attire blended classic, clean lines with conservative elements for the dress and hair while adding bold touches such as vintage jeweled mules by Manolo Blahnik, long red nails, and a vibrant lip color. I was most excited about the after-party dress, aiming for comfort, darkness, and sultriness.

Lessons Learned From Their Autostrada Wedding

It was all a blur; as much as we tried to be present, it all went by quickly. The best part was sitting back, looking at all the photos, and reflecting on the celebrations after it was all done. All of it was good. Our advice for other couples: stick to your initial vision and do not sway from it as you start planning and get bombarded with ideas from family, friends, and other influencers.

Defying Norms and Prioritizing Quality Over Quantity

We kept it small, focusing on quality over quantity. Our celebration revolved around delicious food and drinks. We spared no expense and left our guests amazed. However, we also indulged in luxurious flowers, daring to challenge the norm. They elevated the day and stole the show. I’m okay with the flowers almost outshining the bride. We’re proud of it.

Budgeting Wisely and Making Every Dollar Count for Their Autostrada Wedding

We didn’t start with a specific budget. Instead, we individually chose a few items to splurge on and structured our budget around the rest. While we initially aimed for a $30,000 budget, our total expenses ended up closer to $45,000. We managed to save in several areas: opting for the restaurant entrance for our ceremony instead of a separate venue, forgoing a second photographer (Meghan handled everything brilliantly on her own), skipping a DJ or singer due to the small venue size, choosing a smaller wedding cake over one to feed all 40 guests, and deciding against hiring an event planner. These choices allowed us to allocate more funds towards the aspects of our wedding that were most important to us.

Taking a Leap of Faith With DIY Projects

There were only a few DIY projects for our wedding: the invitations (which we sent digitally via email), the wedding program, and the tags for party favors. Designing the wedding programs was a team effort despite neither of us having a background in graphic design. Trevor selected the Canva template, while I chose the colors. The program included details, menus, and an icebreaker game of bingo. The biggest and scariest DIY decision was doing my own makeup and hair. As a Software Account Executive, this isn’t my usual forte, but I was determined to feel like myself on the big day and took on the challenge. YouTube tutorials became my go-to resource, and I practiced once a week for two months leading up to the wedding. While I did hire my friend Marleau to style my mother and mother-in-law’s hair, she also assisted me with my ponytail, but for the most part, it was all my effort. Ultimately, I was incredibly pleased with the result and felt truly myself.

US destination wedding louisiana

There’s a good chance that when you hear the term destination wedding, your mind quickly goes to the stunning vineyards of Tuscany or the sandy beaches of Tulum. But, the truth is, there are so many cool cities here in the US that would be ideal for a destination wedding. These cities have it all: unique venues, amazing wedding vendors, and tons of bars, restaurants, and sites to keep your guests entertained for the entire wedding weekend–or even for a wedding after-party. If you’re looking to put together destination “I do’s” a little closer to home, get ready to be inspired by these 15 US destination wedding cities!

1. Austin, Texas

US destination wedding Austin

Between the amazing food, the live music, and the youthful vibe of the city, Austin has everything you could want for a destination wedding. If you’re looking for sleek, modern city vibes, there are a lot of venues located in the heart of downtown that would be perfect for your big day. If you’re more country than city, you can drive into the Hill Country–located just outside the city limits–where you’ll find sprawling venues with breathtaking views.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

US destination wedding NOLA

New Orleans is the ultimate party city, which–for some couples–makes it the ultimate wedding destination. Your guests will have a never-ending list of food, bars, and entertainment to enjoy before and after the wedding. The historic charm of the city offers a backdrop for your big day that is both mysterious and romantic. Plus, the second-line tradition of being escorted through the streets by a brass band is as cool as it gets.

Husband and wife duo Erin and Geoffrey Photography had this to say about the city, “In our experience, New Orleans delivers a magical experience like no other city. While planning your wedding, go visit New Orleans and you will easily find a second-line going on somewhere around the French Quarter, and then you’ll know exactly why we recommend this city. Taste the food, find a good bar that serves the original French 75 cocktail, and drink some coffee at Cafe Beignet–you will be welcomed as a local.”

3. Palm Springs, California

US destination wedding Palm Springs

Palm Springs is known for its mid-century modern vibes, gorgeous weather, and desert views. This is the perfect city for couples who want to feel like they’ve stepped into another world and into another era. Gather your wedding guests and sit by the pool and enjoy margaritas at the well-known Ace Hotel, or take a historic home tour to see where Frank Sinatra once resided. Regardless of how you spend your time, Palm Springs is a city that makes for one unforgettable long weekend.

4. Seattle, Washington

Seattle is well known amongst vacationers but doesn’t immediately come to mind for weddings. After all, it’s earned its reputation as the “rainy city.” However, we think the city has a whole lot to offer. There are waterfront venues, modern downtown venues, and even island venues within a ferry ride’s distance of the city. Plus you have access to fantastic food and some of the best coffee shops in the country. The possibilities are endless.

5. Portland, Oregon

Portland is one of the PNW’s dreamiest locations that boasts mild winters and has easy access to forests, mountains, beaches, and skylines. No matter what vibe you want to create for your special day, you’ll find a location and venue to match.

Don’t let the high chances of rain that the rest of the PNW experiences scare you. Portland’s summer is warm and dry–with highs in the low 80s–with low humidity, which makes it ideal for outdoor nuptials. But, if you prefer an indoor wedding, the winters are equally beautiful.

6. Denver, Colorado

Outdoor lovers and adventure seekers, this recommendation is for you! Denver averages 300 days of sunshine every year, making it one of the loveliest cities for couples who want to be outside for most–if not all–of their wedding day. As an added bonus, Denver is one of the greenest cities in the country.

Located just east of the Rockies, this city would be the perfect home base for your wedding weekend because you can have your ceremony and reception downtown and community-building activities in or around the mountains before and after the big day.

7. San Diego, California

If the famously perfect weather in San Diego isn’t enough to convince you, the cool vibes of Balboa Park, the stretches of pristine beaches, and the incredible harbor should seal the deal. This coastal city has waterfront venues galore for beach-loving couples, industrial warehouses and downtown lofts for more modern couples, and even sprawling ranches for couples who want a backyard feel in the heart of the city. If you can dream it, you can find it in sunny San Diego.

8. New York City, New York

If you’re someone who craves modernism, art, and culture, The Big Apple is perfect for you. New York quite literally has it all–from whimsical gardens like Central Park to skyline views at the Top of the Rock. There is a reason it is one of the most iconic cities in the world, after all. Tie the knot in an industrial loft or elegant ballroom before wandering the streets of Manhatten for some of the most epic wedding portraits possible.

9. Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville has found a special place in our hearts. This vibrant city offers all the southern charm you’d expect in Tennessee with a funky, fresh, and eclectic twist that is truly one-of-a-kind. Not only does this city have one of the best live music scenes in the country, but it has an impressive variety of wedding venues that range from cute and quaint to luxurious and lavish. Just don’t forget to pack those cowboy boots and brush up on your line dancing!

10. Miami, Florida

Miami literally has it all–diverse venues, a tropical climate, world-class restaurants, and some of the best beaches in the country. Plus, the deeply rooted party culture is second to none. There is something for everyone, which makes it an ideal city for a destination wedding. Whether you want a shoe-free beach ceremony, a luxurious country club affair, or a sophisticated estate celebration, Miami is ready and waiting to host the day of your dreams.

11. Portland, Maine

When asked about Portland, Junebug member Katelyn Mallett had this to say, “Portland has been consistently rated one of the top cities for its food and drinks for the last few years. Maine is loved by all travelers, and Portland is the perfect size for a getaway. From being situated on the ocean to its showcase of New England foliage, Portland is a great spot for a wedding year-round. It has many breweries that host weddings, as well as multiple industrial venues–the only place in Maine that has this style.” We couldn’t agree more! Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to find some lobster rolls.

12. Joshua Tree, California

Joshua Tree offers some of the most unique scenery in the country. With its large rock formations and abundance of cacti, it’s the perfect destination for those looking to be surrounded by Earth’s natural beauty. The city and venues may be on the smaller side, but there’s nothing more unique than getting married at an old hotel built in 1946 by Roy Rodgers or amidst the saguaros and yuccas.

13. Sedona, Arizona

Located just two hours north of Phoenix, Sedona’s red rocks are unlike anything else in the world. In fact, some may argue that it’s one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Because it’s located in northern Arizona, the temperatures stay much milder year-round, making it ideal for weddings during any season. The small city’s venues include luxury resorts, event centers with sweeping views of the rocks, romantic gazebos, and picturesque creekside parks.

After tying the knot, take your wedding party to Devil’s Bridge or Catherdral Rock to hike off their hangovers and see some seriously cool views.

14. Charleston, South Carolina

If you’ve always dreamed of cobblestone streets or horse-drawn carriages for your special day, Charleston, South Carolina may just be the place for you. With plenty of colorful historic buildings, pristine beaches, high-end golf courses, and centuries-old weeping willows, your lovefest will be surrounded with southern charm. Not to mention, the city is known for its incredible cuisine and even more scrumptious desserts.

15. Chicago, Illinois

It’s easy to fall in love with Chicago’s charm the minute you arrive. From the stunning cityscapes to the hip suburbs to some of the best pizza in the world, Chi-Town has an unexplainable magnetic energy. Although it may not have the tropical weather that one might think about for destination weddings, you can’t beat the modern and upscale shops, restaurants, and hotels. We’re talking exposed brick and marquee lights galore.

Cozy and Natural Black and White Abbey Resort Wedding

February 27, 2024 | justine

At Ben and Greg’s Abbey Resort wedding, elegance met contemporary charm against the serene backdrop of Lake Geneva. Their choice of a romantic lakeside venue–paired with a sophisticated black and white color scheme–set the stage for a celebration that seamlessly blended classic and modern elements.

The couple’s chic and modern vibe infused every aspect of their special day, starting with the garden ceremony surrounded by lush greenery. The sleek altar served as a striking focal point, where the two grooms exchanged their vows. Transitioning to the pavilion reception, the all-black long tables were adorned with candles in glass containers and opulent foliage and floral centerpieces, creating a captivating and dreamy atmosphere.

Abbey Resort, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, United States

A Contemporary and Minimalist Approach to Their Abbey Resort Wedding

Through meticulous planning and coordination with our wedding planner and florist, we successfully brought our vision to life. We aimed for a contemporary, clean, minimal vibe, steering away from the typical wedding atmosphere. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It just didn’t speak to us. As a same-sex couple, it was essential for us to infuse a more masculine feel into our celebration to achieve our desired result. Opting for an all-black and white theme–extending from guests’ attire to all the linens within the venue–played a crucial role in achieving the desired clean and contemporary look. From there, we put a lot of trust in our florist to execute our aesthetic vision, a preference for more greenery than flowers with a dark and moody twist. She exceeded our expectations, and we were thrilled with the outcome.

Navigating Wedding Advice: How to Stay True to Your Vision

Take the time to come up with a vision you’re happy with. During the wedding planning process, you’ll receive a lot of advice, some unsolicited, and it’s not always helpful. Having a clear vision to gut-check these suggestions helps determine whether or not you want to move forward with it. Also, remember: you can’t please everyone, so ultimately, do what works for you, the couple. It’s your and your partner’s day, after all.

The Crowd-Pleasing Choice of Garrett Popcorn Favors

Being from Chicago, we wanted to give our guests something delicious to remember the night, so we chose to hand out mini bags of Garrett popcorn. If you’re familiar with Garrett, you know it’s a crowd favorite, and there was not a single bag left over. Most people don’t want a keychain or shot glass with your name on it, but they do want a combination of cheddar cheese and caramel popcorn, especially if they’ve been dancing for 4.5 hours.

This VanDusen Botanical Garden Wedding Was Inspired by a Summer Sunset

February 26, 2024 | justine

Taryn and Brad envisioned a wedding filled with creativity, unique touches, and vibrant colors. Their goal was to create a joyful celebration of love infused with contemporary flair and plenty of fun! Drawing inspiration from the stunning colors of a summer sunset, they transformed their VanDusen Botanical Garden wedding into a kaleidoscope of hues. Every aspect, from attire to flowers and decor, reflected the warmth and beauty of a summer evening sky.

Their enchanting outdoor ceremony was beneath a majestic willow tree, surrounded by natural beauty. Opting for simple decor that complemented the picturesque setting, they added vibrant, grounded floral arrangements to enhance the serene ambiance. Upon entering the reception, guests were greeted with a burst of confetti, setting the tone for a joyous celebration. Inside, meticulously curated tablescapes with color-blocked centerpieces added a touch of modern elegance to the festivities.

The couple poured their hearts into every detail, ensuring each aspect reflected their personalities and style. Their meticulous planning and personal touches resulted in a breathtaking celebration that perfectly captured their love. With the help of Junebug member Hennygraphy, every cherished moment was beautifully preserved in exquisite images. Scroll down to witness the magic of their special day unfold.

The Couple:

Taryn and Brad

The Wedding:

VanDusen Botanical Garden, Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada

Embracing a Summer Sky Sunset Gradient Color Palette

Brad and I, both artists in our own right, were determined to make our wedding a blend of creativity, uniqueness, and, above all, fun! Taking cues from the mesmerizing colors of a summer sunset, shifting from warm oranges to soft purples with a touch of green, we knew we had found our inspiration. We wanted our celebration to radiate joy, so we decided on a color theme that would reflect the happiness of the occasion. We infused this gradient of colors into every detail of our wedding, from the attire to the decorations. Each bridesmaid embodied a different shade from the gradient, carrying matching bouquets, while the groomsmen coordinated with ties, pocket squares, and boutonnieres in complementary hues.

Personalized Touches at Their VanDusen Botanical Garden Wedding Ceremony

For our outdoor ceremony under the magnificent willow tree, we aimed for a minimalist approach to highlight the natural beauty around us. Our talented florist created stunning ground-level arrangements that perfectly matched our gradient color scheme, adding a pop of color to the setting. Personal touches were essential to us, so we wrote our own vows and worked closely with our officiant to design the entire ceremony, ensuring our unique story took center stage. As we entered and exited, bubbles and confetti filled the air, setting a joyful tone for the celebration. Our first dance beneath a giant disco ball marked the perfect end to a truly unforgettable day filled with love, laughter, and endless happiness.

Transforming the Reception Space into a Gradient of Hues

For our reception, we wanted to create a mesmerizing spectrum of color throughout the entire space. Each table was carefully adorned with matching napkins, candles, and candle holders, blending seamlessly from one hue to the next. The floral arrangements and bud vases were thoughtfully chosen to complement the color theme of each table, uniting everything in a beautifully intentional way. We kept the linens and chairs neutral white to ensure the colors popped, while black plates added a grounding touch to each place setting. Although incorporating so many vibrant elements felt daunting, meticulous planning and color mockups helped us strike the perfect balance and prevent clashing. When everything came together on the big day, it surpassed our wildest expectations.

Tips for a Meaningful Wedding Experience

Our advice for couples starting their wedding planning journey is simple: stay focused on what truly matters to you both. Embrace the excitement and challenges that come your way, and always stay true to yourselves. Remember, your wedding is about celebrating your love with your closest family and friends. Create a day that reflects your bond and personalities and will be a success. We found it helpful to stay organized with a task board, like Trello, to avoid any last-minute surprises. Writing your own vows is a special touch that allows you to express your love uniquely and meaningfully, deepening the connection between you and your loved ones.

Why They Chose to Tie the Knot at the VanDusen Botanical Garden

For our wedding in July, we wanted to make the most of the beautiful summer weather by creating an indoor/outdoor atmosphere. Choosing a well-known tourist spot as our venue meant we could invite all our out-of-town guests to a special location. The botanical gardens provided a magical backdrop for our ceremony, while the indoor reception area was filled with natural light and had a modern charm. With a lovely patio, our guests could move around as they pleased. With its contemporary design and stunning views of the gardens through floor-to-ceiling windows, the reception venue allowed us to personalize the space exactly how we wanted. It was the perfect combination of indoor coziness and outdoor beauty, making our day truly unforgettable.

Personalized Perfection: Homemade Favors and Customized Newspapers

For our wedding favors, we wanted to give our guests something unique and heartfelt. We decided on two special gifts: a personalized wedding newspaper and homemade bean-to-bar dark chocolate bars. We poured our hearts into making each of the 95 chocolate bars from scratch, starting with roasting the cacao beans and carefully tempering the chocolate. To add a personal touch, we designed custom labels for each bar, using them as place cards for our guests. We also created our wedding newspapers at home, filling them with photos, fun facts about us, tips for visiting Vancouver, sweet messages from our parents, a cocktail hour drink menu, and even games like a crossword puzzle. It was a labor of love, and we were excited to share these meaningful keepsakes with our loved ones on our big day.

A VanDusen Botanical Garden Wedding Filled with Personal Touches

In the year leading up to our wedding, we got fully into DIY projects as an artist and a designer. We were surprised to count a total of 28! Some highlights include making 95 chocolate bars as unique place cards, hand-painting 85 concrete candle holders, and handling everything from save-the-dates to our wedding website. Adding personal touches like sparkly disco letters, a fancy gin cocktail with butterfly pea flowers, and a shiny welcome sign made the day extra special. I even sewed the sleeves for my dress and veil myself, adding delicate embroidered pearls. We ensured everything, even the napkins we ordered and dyed by hand, matched perfectly. One of our favorite DIY projects was creating our wedding bands. With Brad’s design skills, we worked together to craft the perfect rings, tweaking designs until they were just right. The final gold bands turned out stunning, representing our love and creativity.

This Cozy Presidio Yacht Club Wedding Was Full of Views, Good Food, and Music

February 24, 2024 | justine

Christina and Andy envisioned a wedding that was a cozy, authentic, and unforgettable gathering, like hosting the ultimate dinner party in their own space. They aimed for an atmosphere that exuded warmth and joy, complete with exceptional food, drinks, and music. With this in mind, they meticulously infused elements of their personalities into every facet of their Presidio Yacht Club wedding. The result was nothing short of extraordinary—a celebration that beautifully captured their love and cherished values.

They knew they wanted a unique venue, a place not typically considered for weddings. They got creative and made it a spectacular event by having the ceremony on the dock, with the city and bay as a backdrop. Flowers played a big role, with whimsical and airy meadow-style installations behind the altar. The reception took place in the old boat house, where they hung old sails for a rustic touch, strung lights across the ceiling, and candles on the tables added a warm glow. To cap off the evening, they danced in an old-school, wood-paneled dive bar upstairs.

If you’ve ever pondered about infusing your individuality into every detail of your special day for a cohesive and elegant theme, then this wedding is a must-see. These stunning photos by Junebug member Teri B perfectly capture the spirit of their love tale and the remarkable day they curated. Explore all the imaginative ideas that will add a personal touch to your big day, making it feel even more intimate and special.

The Couple:

Christina and Andy

The Wedding:

Presidio Yacht Club, San Fransisco, California

Creating Meaningful Moments During the Ceremony

We had a good friend officiate, and to architect her words, she did short interviews with our parents. It was beautiful to hear how she wove all of their inputs together. We also asked two friends to do readings, nothing religious, and we gave them pretty loose guidelines to read a passage, song lyrics, poem, or article that represents love and long-term partnership to them. We wrote our own vows, and Andy surprised me with song lyrics at the end of his. We were smiling ear to ear and laughing the whole time. I’m shocked I didn’t cry!

Creating a Unique SF Experience: Why They Chose a Presidio Yacht Club Wedding

We knew we wanted a venue with some character, a space you might not even think of for a wedding. And because we decided to host our wedding in SF, where we met seven years ago, we wanted to ensure our guests had a “very SF” experience. We started with the venue search. We knew Presidio Yacht Club was the one! It has a lot of character and grit, with some of the best possible views of San Francisco. We could host the ceremony on the dock, with the city and the Bay behind us, have dinner in the old, rustic boat house, and finish the evening dancing in the old school, wood-paneled dive bar upstairs. Andy always joked he wanted to get married in a dive bar, which was as close as it would get! The venue was a big part of setting the vibe, but it was a space that needed a lot of work to bring it to life, so a lot went into curating all the decor and flowers to bring it to life. The venue also had a perfect setup for each portion of the evening, which made it easy to contain the whole wedding and reception in the same place while still offering a change of scenery from ceremony to dinner to dancing.

How They Curated Their Dream Wedding Without Overspending

San Fransisco is an expensive place to get married, and we only had a limited budget, so we curated creative inspo that we loved and then shopped around to find vendors who could achieve our vision while matching our budget and being able to execute our vision without breaking the bank. We found creative ways to achieve a pretty stunning evening. Because food was so important to us, that was the first vendor we booked, Katie Powers, who is known for delicious family-style meals made from locally sourced ingredients. We wanted florals to play a big part in decor and wanted something whimsical, airy, abstract, and unexpected. We found a local flower farmer who grows some of the most gorgeous flowers in the Bay and was game to take on our vision (she crushed it!). A good friend of ours is a horticulturist and has been making biophilic art for years—she offered to make us some meadow-style installations to go behind us at the altar and behind where we sat at dinner. We hung old sails across one of the boathouse’s walls, adding to the rustic vibe, and lights were strung across the ceiling. Candles on the tables helped create a warm glow.

Setting the Mood Through a Thoughtfully Curated Playlist for Their Presidio Yacht Club Wedding

We had a DJ playing music throughout the wedding, and we spent hours, I mean hours, curating playlists to serve as guides for him. He played vinyl during the dancing, which was a total vibe with the disco ball spinning above and red lights, making the room feel perfectly moody and cool. Our guests played a massive role in the overall feel of the wedding, too! We have a really fun crew of friends, and they absolutely brought the energy that night.

Top Tips for Stress-Free Wedding Planning: Stay Organized and Communicative

Start early, stay organized with spreadsheets and Google Docs, keep a close tally of expenses (and expect to spend more than you want to!), and have clear communication with your vendors. Don’t be afraid to give very clear instructions and feedback to vendors. It’s so important that they clearly understand your vision and what you like and don’t like—block time to work on wedding stuff together as a couple. Do as much as possible as far in advance as possible because a million tiny little things will come up in the final weeks, and the last thing you want is to be stressed out. We created a master spreadsheet with different categories and then line items for each expense. We researched costs and put in projected costs, which we updated with actuals once we had final expenses. We kept this updated close to real-time and shared it with all our parents for full transparency.

Funky and Intimate Dive Motel Micro Wedding

February 17, 2024 | justine

Andi and Emily set out to find the perfect wedding location, and guess what? Instagram led them to it! It felt like destiny had stepped in just for them. They were determined to find a venue whose existing features matched their vibe. The hidden gem they discovered was a dream come true—it had everything they wanted! With its funky disco vibes, it turned out to be the ideal choice. Who wouldn’t want to exchange vows in such an awesome atmosphere? Their Dive Motel micro wedding was exactly what they had hoped for—packed with personal touches and unforgettable moments.

They started the day by gathering all their nearest and dearest out on the deck, still rocking their PJs. Their outdoor ceremony was cozy and personal, with their closest friend doubling as the officiant, even settling some decisions with a round of rock, paper, scissors. Afterward, they headed out for some delicious pizza, followed by chocolate chip cookies for dessert. They DIYed most of the day, adding their personal touch to every detail to make it truly feel like them.

If you’ve ever wondered how to infuse your own personality into every part of your celebration, then you absolutely must check out this wedding. The photos by childhood friend Just Jess Photography perfectly capture the essence of their love story and the incredible day they created together.

The Couple:

Andi and Emily

The Wedding:

Dive Motel, Tennessee, United States

Letting Their Venue Set the Stage for Their Wedding Day

We didn’t feel connected to any particular place enough to pick a location based on sentiment. We also wanted something reasonably priced and close for our loved ones to travel. Andi had been following the Dive Motel on Instagram for a while, and it just came to her one day. It just made sense. It was within a couple of hours’ drive, and people could choose to stay there or nearby, and several people ended up using it as an excuse to make it a multi-day trip and get a little vacation out of it. And also, it’s just a cool motel! Why wouldn’t you want to get married there? The venue paved the way for everything. We picked somewhere that would allow us to not worry about decor much. We traveled, so we wanted to keep things minimal. The Dive Motel is so fun and funky that it didn’t need our help at all.

Personal Touches and Shared Talents on Their Dive Hotel Micro Wedding

Waking up the day of and meeting all our loved ones out on the deck in our pjs. We all spent the day pitching in wherever needed to prepare for the big night. We were surrounded by so much love and talent. Everything done in the ceremony and leading up to it was done by friends and family! Andi’s closest friend officiated, and my best friends did readings. We did rock, paper, and scissors to decide whose name would be taken (that’s typically how we make decisions). Caroline Zemlin, a friend of Andi’s, did the hair and makeup.

Thrifted Treasures and Homemade Elegance: Putting the DIY in Their Dive Hotel Micro Wedding

We DIYed most of it. Andi’s bouquet was put together by Flower Boys, and then we got flowers from them to make my pocket flowers. We got more from Kroger to make all the centerpieces that friends arranged before the ceremony. All the dishes and vases were thrifted from our house.

The Wedding Team:

Congratulations to Andi and Emily on their funky and intimate Dive Motel micro wedding. Huge thanks to Just Jess Photography for capturing all the unforgettable moments that showcase their love story.

Dreamy Italy Wedding Venues You’re Going to Love

Lake Como Italy wedding venue

Where: Lake Como

Why we love it: If you love the idea of tying the knot while overlooking all of the beautiful scenery that Lake Como offers, you’ll love Villa Rubini Redaelli. Situated in the small village of Dongo, you and your loved ones (the villa has 12 beds) can enjoy the villa, the gardens, and the pool in between celebrations or take to Dongo to indulge in delicious food and drinks or cooking classes.

Villa Troubetzkoy

Where: Venice

Why we love it: For those who prefer a countryside wedding–while still looking to be close to a major city–Villa Troubetzkoy may be the perfect choice. The 17th-century home is nestled in the Venetian countryside and is complete with nine bedrooms, six bathrooms, and serene gardens that make for the ideal spot to say “I do.”

Villa Clodia Relais

Where: Rome

Why we love it: Although this one isn’t technically in Rome, it sits in the heart of Roman Tuscia, the borderline between Rome and Viterbo. With multiple different wedding spaces to choose from–like the Terrace, the Old Oak, or the Portico–you can tailor your wedding here specifically to your vision. The best part? The property is also a hotel, so all of your guests can stay on the property and be together for trips into the city to see The Colosseum and Trevi Fountain.

Villa del Bono

Where: Milan

Why we love it: Designed by architect Cecilio Arpesani, Villa del Bono was inspired by the Florentine Renaissance and is complete with all the beautiful touches you’d expect to find in an Italian villa. The villa itself can host up to 150 guests, but if you’re looking for something bigger, the park surrounding the house can host events for up to 500 guests. Oh, and did we mention it has a swimming pool that you can cool off that’s the epitome of idyllic?

Portofino Italy Wedding venue

Abbazia La Cervara

Where: Portofino

Why we love it: A view overlooking the coast and picturesque gardens–what more could you want in a wedding venue? If the pictures don’t sell you on this stunning venue, then maybe the huge Noble Floor with four exclusive suites, a large living room, and a private kitchen may. Or the fact that Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino have a variety of hotels for your guests, all within five minutes.

Villa Treville

Where: Positano

Why we love it: The Amalfi Coat is one of the hottest vacation destinations in the world, so it’s no surprise that it’s becoming a popular wedding destination, too. As the former home of the Italian director Franco Zeffirelli, this boutique hotel is sure to exceed your expectations. You can host your reception under the stars at Maestro’s Restaurant after saying “I do” overlooking the Mediterranean.

Tuscany Italy wedding venue

Borgo Santo Pietro

Where: Tuscany

Why we love it: Located in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, Borgo Santo Pietro is the perfect venue because you can explore Tuscany and Siena. Host your ceremony at the abbey ruins of San Galgano, the church of Montesiepi, or on property in the gardens or one of their many beautiful rooms.

Castello di Vicarello

Where: Tuscany

Why we love it: Calling everyone who wants to get married in a castle. Castello di Vicarello sits in the southernmost part of Tuscany on the rolling hills of the countryside. Because of its secluded location, it’s ideal for those who want something a little more intimate. Tie the knot in the gardens or one of the nearby churches before enjoying a delicious 3-course al fresco meal with your loved ones.

Villa San Michele

Where: Florence

Why we love it: Sitting only 10 minutes away from the heart of Florence lies Villa San Michele, a Renaissance Villa hotel that offers some of the most stunning views you’ll find in Italy. With multiple different ceremony options, this scenic work of art can host you and up to 150 of your loved ones. The wedding menu also includes a four-course meal, wedding cake, coffee, and wine. So you know you’re going to be eating well.

Ravello Italy wedding venue

Villa Cimbrone

Where: Ravello

Why we love it: The Amalfi Coast–Positano, specifically– can be extremely packed during peak season. And while some people don’t mind the crowds, if you’re hoping to beat the tourists, consider opting for a Ravello wedding, another resort town on the Amalfi coast. At Villa Cimbrone, you can tie the knot in the stunning gardens on the terrace overlooking the water. No matter what you prefer, this 12th-century palace is sure to sweep you off your feet.

Villa Astor

Where: Sorento

Why we love it: A seafront villa with 270º views of the Bay of Naples–does it get any better than that? Villa Astor’s history can be traced back to the first century A.D., and it was purchased by Lord William Waldorf Astor in 1905. Since then, it has welcomed countless notable visitors, including Princess Margaret, and has been named a dream vacation home by publications such as Forbes, Town & Country, and more. One look at the property, and it’s not hard to see why.

Puglia Italy wedding venue

Masseria Potenti

Where: Puglia

Why we love it: Picture this–gorgeous white and stone architecture set against the Ionian Sea and rows of olive trees and vineyards. That’s exactly what Masseria Potenti offers its couples. Whether you exchange vows in the orangery, in the Androna Porch, or under the Agavi Portico, this 16th-century Masseria is as magical as it sounds.

Tonnara di Scopello

Where: Sicily

Why we love it: This lovingly restored fishing village is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, making it arguably one of the most beautiful venues on this list. With fifteen newly refurbished apartments, you and your closest friends and family can stay in Sicily, enjoy aperitifs at sunset, and hear the water gently beating the shore late into the evening–talk about serene.

Venice Italy wedding venue

Aman Hotel

Where: Venice

Why we love it: Venice has so much to offer, and if you’re hoping to give your guests the authentic Italian experience, it’s one of the best cities to host your wedding. Not only do they get to be in the hustle and bustle of a bigger city, but they also get to experience one of Italy’s most famous destinations. The Aman Hotel is nestled in the San Polo quarter of the city and is one of the most iconic hotels you’ll come across, thanks to its views of the Grand Canal, elegant ballrooms, and the homey feel that it offers. There’s a reason George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin celebrated their wedding here.

Villa Aurelia

Where: Rome

Why we love it: Speaking of cities, if Rome is more of what you envisioned for your big day, consider Villa Aurelia. It’s set on the highest point within the walls of Rome, giving you panoramic views of the city. Because the views are too incredible to pass, we know you’ll want to stay up all night enjoying them–and lucky for you, you can. Stay up with your guests, dancing and chatting until 2 AM. Oh, and did we mention they’re open to letting you use any vendor you want? This way, you can personalize your wedding exactly how you want it.

These Italy wedding venues are just scratching the surface. If it were up to us, this list would be much longer, but we aim to make the wedding planning process easier for you. With that said, now that you’ve got your dream Italian venue picked out, it’s time to think about the logistics. There’s a lot that goes into getting married in a different country. That’s why we’ve created an Italy destination wedding guide full of everything you need to know–from costs to legal requirements, and everything in between.
