The Best Shapewear To Wear Under Your Wedding Dress

March 29, 2023 | kailey

Images by Norman Yap.

At Junebug Weddings, we fully support anything that’ll make you feel your absolute best on your wedding day. If this means purchasing shapewear to complete your wedding day look, we’re here for it. Remember: your wedding, your rules.

After hunting down the perfect wedding dress, it’s time to get those undergarments taken care of. With a wide variety of websites selling shapewear of different colors and cuts, you might be left wondering exactly where to start. Don’t panic! We’re breaking down the different shapewear styles and where to purchase these pieces to elevate your wedding day attire.

All Your Wedding Shapewear Questions Answered

Do I Have To Wear Shapewear Under My Wedding Dress?

There are no concrete rules when it comes to your wedding day, and your choice of undergarments is no exception. Wearing shapewear under your wedding dress is a personal choice and will differ from bride to bride.

What Is The Purpose Of Shapewear?

There are a variety of different shapewear styles that are used to enhance your natural shape. The compression material works to give you a smoother and more prominent silhouette.

What Color Shapewear Should I Purchase?

As you probably noticed, shapewear tends to only come in neutral skin-toned colors. This is no accident—they call them “intimates” for a reason. These pieces are made to blend in. So when it comes to shopping for your undergarments, hunt down options that suit your skin color.

Shapewear Style Breakdown

Shapewear Shorts

Shapewear shorts are the option for those that want to get down on the dance floor. And with a variety of lengths, this undergarment has options for long gowns or short wedding dresses. Compression shorts like these typically come up to under your bra line, so you’ll have full coverage from your tummy to mid-thigh.

Shapewear Panties And Thongs

Shapewear panties will give your butt a lift while smoothing all the right places. Not a fan of full-coverage underwear but still want a little support under your wedding dress? The only solution: shapewear thongs. Heights can vary from your belly button to under your bra line, so shopping for this shapewear style is a fully customizable experience.

Shapewear Bodysuits

A bodysuit is all-over shaping. This is the perfect choice for those that want full coverage from their bra down to their butt. Yes, it’s one of the only shapewear options that actually comes with a bra. And while there are so many things to purchase before the big day, this one piece will cover all the undergarment basics—underwear, bra, and shapewear.

Open-Bust Shapewear

The open-bust option is basically a bodysuit minus the bra. It’s the perfect option for those that have already picked out their lingerie pieces for the wedding day. You get the shapewear effect while also rocking your choice of bra or no bra at all—it’s the best of both worlds.

Shapewear Dress or Skirt Slip

Adjustable straps, built-in bra, and all-over smoothing? We’re sold. A shapewear dress provides all-over smoothing. Wearing a two-piece wedding dress or just want coverage on your lower half? Consider a skirt slip. While these two are stunning options that allow more movement, without the underwear or shorts, you do run the risk of this piece riding up under your wedding dress.

Your shapewear is taken care of, check. But why stop there? Sticking to the undergarment trend, we’ve rounded up the prettiest lingerie for your wedding or honeymoon. From bras to panties and even lingerie sets—these top-tier pieces will have you feeling like your hottest self.

Small But Mighty: The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Micro Wedding

March 26, 2023 | Junebug Weddings

Have you heard the buzz about micro weddings? It’s no secret that the wedding industry has changed over the past few years. As couples decided to opt out of big weddings, we’ve seen a boom of smaller, more intimate affairs that include the couple’s closest friends and family. But because the term micro wedding is fairly new, you may feel confused about what the difference is between a micro wedding vs. a small affair. Lucky for you, we’re here to answer all of your burning questions to help you feel confident in planning the wedding of your dreams–whether big or small.

What is a Micro Wedding?

There’s a lot of confusing and conflicting information about micro weddings online, especially since they’re so closely related to what we’d refer to as an intimate wedding. In fact, micro weddings are intimate by nature. So, what gives? To start, micro weddings typically have less than 30 people—often less than 10, including vendors.

As the couple planning the wedding, however, you have the power to define what micro means to you. It’s more about a mindset than a precise number of seats at the dinner table. The flexibility and intimate experience are exactly why we love them!

Benefits of Hosting a Micro Wedding

Saves You Money

Having a minimony with your closest loved ones is one of the easiest ways to save money. Because you can go as big or small as you want, you have total control of all of the details. This means more freedom to splurge on the flowers you saw on Pinterest, the wedding photographer you’ve been dreaming of for years, or the meal that’s had your mouth watering since the moment you tried it. It also means that you can host a wedding weekend with some of your favorite people. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Gives You More Time With Your Guests

While we adore larger weddings, finding time as the newlyweds to chat with all of your guests is nearly impossible. They’re there to celebrate you and having the opportunity to enjoy their company can help you and them feel more fulfilled by the end of the night.

Easier Planning

Of course, when planning a wedding for 15 vs. a wedding for 150 people, the planning becomes much easier. You have more options for the venue, seating charts are easier to create, there are fewer dietary restrictions, and you’ll deal with a lot fewer opinions from outsiders. This means you’ll be able to tie the knot in a shorter timespan too if you’d like.

A lot More Personal

As we just mentioned, there’s something about a micro wedding that is far more personal and intimate than a larger wedding. You get to soak up spending time with your loved ones and you can really tailor the day to you and your fiance.

Tips for Creating Your Micro Wedding Guest List

We know that one of the hardest parts about planning a micro wedding is trimming down your guest list. You don’t want anyone feeling left out on your special day, but you also need to make the tough call to leave some people out. First and foremost, it’s important to remember that there’s beauty in only having the people who are closest to you celebrating the special day together.

When organizing your guest list, think about this one question: which guests can you not imagine your wedding day without? Those are the people who are most vital to you. Whether this is your aunt who has treated you like one of their own your entire life or your childhood best friend, these are the people you first called when you got engaged. Or the one’s that you’d share any big life news with, for that matter.

What to Wear to Your Micro Wedding

While you’re in a mindset to break tradition, it might be fun to think about wedding outfits that would best reflect your personal styles. We love colored wedding dresses and suits, jumpsuits, and short gowns—aka any outfit that can be made unique to your day. However, if you’ve always envisioned yourself in traditional wedding attire, that’s okay too. It’s your wedding day, which means you can do whatever you want. Multiple outfit changes, anyone?

Micro Wedding Ideas

Whether you choose to make your day special with catering from your favorite restaurant, a scavenger hunt for your guests, or a weekend-long celebration at an Airbnb with your friends and family, it’s sure to be a day where you make extraordinary memories spending quality time with those you love most.

Destination “I do’s”

Why not turn the most special day of your life into a vacation? Choose from a beachy getaway or a mountainous trip complete with plenty of hiking and kayaking, bringing everyone you love with you on a small trip to celebrate you and your significant other is the perfect way to start married life together.

Rent An Airbnb

If you’re more than happy getting married in your hometown or you don’t want everyone to have to travel for your wedding, consider making the party last longer than a day by renting an Airbnb. This way everyone that you’ve invited can stay under one roof to keep the spirits high for multiple days. We can’t recommend one with a pool enough. There’s nothing better than a post-wedding brunch and pool day.

Incorporate a Unity Ceremony

Because your guest list is so small, don’t be afraid to incorporate your loved ones into your micro wedding ceremony through a unity ceremony. Some of our favorites include passing around your rings for everyone to hold and send their well wishes or a group shot or cheers. You may also feel so inclined to invite everyone to participate in readings of their favorite love poems, passages from a book, or quotes.

Post Wedding Celebration

If you’re not interested in getting an Airbnb or just can’t seem to find lodging that you enjoy, consider planning fun adventures or activities with your guests after you’ve exchanged vows. From renting a boat, a helicopter ride, a bonfire, or karaoke, the after-party ideas are endless.

Micro Wedding Questions

How Much Does A Micro Wedding Cost?

The cost of a wedding–whether it’s micro or large–is going to vary depending on the vendors you hire. For example, some venues have all-inclusive packages which can save you thousands of dollars. It’s entirely up to you on the areas in which you splurge and save. In general, a micro wedding, however, will likely cost you around $10,000-$15,000. We know that’s a hard pill to swallow but that’s almost half of what a traditional wedding costs.

Is A Cocktail Ceremony Necessary At A Micro Wedding?

Because the wedding is much smaller than a traditional wedding, you don’t need to worry about a cocktail hour too much. It is important, however, to remember that if you’re going to take portraits after your ceremony, you should offer light refreshments for your guests so they have food and drinks to enjoy while you take photos.

Do You Need A Wedding Planner For A Micro Wedding?

Choosing a wedding planner for your minimony is a personal choice. Chances are you’ve never planned a wedding before, so even though a micro wedding is smaller, there are a lot of logistics that you may not know to think about. We’re firm believers here at Junebug that wedding planners can help give you the wedding of your dream, no matter what size.

Iconic & Disco Ball-Filled Las Vegas Chapel Wedding

March 4, 2023 | justine

With a maximalist dress code, a showgirl officiant, a dive bar reception venue, and disco balls galore–Kami and Nick’s Las Vegas chapel wedding is giving us all the iconic Sin City wedding vibes! The pair set out to throw the best party ever with their closest loved ones, and they accomplished exactly that, and then some.

For a true “Vegas experience,” the couple tied the knot at the Sure Thing Chapel with a lit heart-shaped backdrop framing the moment they said their “I dos.” After the ceremony, their small group made their way to Atomic Liquors where they munched on tacos, danced to jukebox music, and hit the open bar all night long.

Their big day reflected their fun-loving and stylish nature, and thankfully, Junebug member Madeline Barr was there to capture everything. And with the bride being a photographer (and Junebug member) herself, you can absolutely expect epic photo moments! So follow the call of disco balls and keep scrolling to see all the details of this unconventional love affair.

The Couple:

Kami and Nick

The Wedding:

Sure Thing Chapel, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

The Inspiration Behind Their Las Vegas Chapel Wedding

In a lot of ways, our vibe, style, and design came together by accident. We didn’t really set out to achieve a certain aesthetic, we just started making decisions that were purely us and that made us excited. We considered eloping but then realized we didn’t want to exclude our favorite people. So we thought of what our dream elopement day would look like and then just invited people to join us. Then my florist and one of my good friends just said, “Let me make you a very Vegas bouquet and I promise it won’t be tacky.” I trusted him fully and saw nothing about it until the day of. There were so many things like that where we didn’t plan anything on purpose. We just made decisions that felt like us, and it all ended up coming together so cohesively, which honestly surprised us. We just wanted to have a good time.

Why A Disco Ball-Filled Las Vegas Chapel Wedding

I’m a wedding photographer myself, and at a lot of the weddings I was shooting early in the year, I was seeing a lot of disco balls. That got me excited, I even bought a whole bunch of disco balls from one of my brides in the spring before we were even engaged. In our heads, we were just picturing a penthouse hotel party with disco balls everywhere. We drove the disco balls all the way from San Diego so we could have them in our room for photos.

How They Landed On Their Chapel Venue

We were looking for an iconic Las Vegas Chapel wedding, and when I came across Sure Thing Chapel, I was obsessed. It was so cute, photogenic, and the true “Vegas experience” for our guests. As a female wedding photographer, I love that it is a female-run chapel, and one of the owners is a photographer herself, so of course, it is set up for maximum-photo potential. And it ended up being a walking distance from our reception venue, which was the iconic downtown dive bar, Atomic Liquors. Having the dive bar reception was everything we dreamt of and more. It was casual, we could play our own music, we had an open bar, they kept the tacos coming all night, and everyone just let loose in the best way. It couldn’t have been more us.

Carving Out Intentional Private Time To Take It All In

We got ready together and read our vows for the first time together privately before we shared them with everyone. Not being stimulated or overwhelmed, while we were hearing them for the first time, really let us stay present and let them sink in. We were so much more emotional when it was just us, and it was the best decision. We also had our friend and co-officiant Alyssa read to us what she prepared for our ceremony in private before we got dressed. It was an extremely special and personal ceremony script, and hearing it for the first time just us was the perfect way for us to be present and absorb it all to start the day. Those are the moments we remember most vividly because the rest of the day was such a blur!

Creating A Ceremony That Reflected Their Love Story And A Show Girl Surprise

Personalizing our ceremony was important to us. We wanted the ceremony to be a peek into our relationship for our family and friends. Our friend Alyssa co-officiated with Surely the Showgirl, so she was able to read a really special opening speech based on questions she had asked us a few months before. It was so beautiful and meaningful. Then we read our own vows we had written before Surely the Showgirl stepped in to finish the ceremony. I tried my absolute hardest to keep that surprise as long as I could. It was so entertaining for our guests and felt so us. We could tell how much fun everyone was having and that meant the world to us. And how epic to say a showgirl married us.

Having A Fun Wedding Experience Was A Top Priority

For us, our top priorities were that people had fun and looked good while doing it. We kept it simple and only did what we truly wanted and ditched what we didn’t. We are so proud of how much fun people had. We set out to throw the best party anyone has ever been to, and we feel like we absolutely accomplished that. It also ended up being the best-dressed event anyone had ever been to. A couple of months before the wedding, our florist and friend Arturo said we should call the dress code “Vegas maximalism”. And our friends and family just ran with it.

Setting A Fun Wedding Dress Code

Our dress code was Vegas maximalism. We let guests interpret that however they wanted, and it was so fun seeing everyone’s wedding looks come together. We didn’t have a color palette or dress code, we were both in white, so we let everyone wear whatever they wanted, and it was so amazing. There were sequins and fringe and jumpsuits and pantsuits and crazy colors and everything in between. We loved seeing how people showed up and took the dress code to the next level. A few of our guests were even approached by fashion influencers for interviews in the lobby while waiting to go to the wedding, it was pretty epic!

Kingsley Leather

From the brand: What inspired me to take up leatherworking in particular was that I have always admired leather goods and how they gain character as they age, think old leather suitcases and satchels etc. However the cheap mass-produced imports never seemed to last as long as I expected – I was changing my wallet every 6 months for example! I decided that I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone: create the quality leather goods that I desired for myself and pursue a new non-computer based hobby.

After a couple of months of practicing, my work began to get noticed by friends and family and this led to my first set of ‘commissions’. After creating a leather satchel for my girlfriend, a wallet for my brother, and plenty of belts, I soon decided to begin accepting orders from the wider (and paying!) public. I now run Kingsley Leather full-time and have never looked back – follow me as my journey continues.

From the brand: A near-death experience taught me that nothing is more important in this life than the moments that are gone too fast. There is no more conflict about kissing my loved one or protecting the 55 minutes of makeup I worked on. I don’t have to choose any longer between my looks and the precious moments that pass us by. I can have my cake and eat it too.

Cozy and Rustic Lucas Confectionery Wedding

December 26, 2022 | justine

With everything from a 1940s-style confectionery venue and rustic autumn decor to fantastic fall fashion and meaningful handmade details—Brian and Brian’s Lucas Confectionery wedding had it all. Sharing a deep love of nature and the magical ambiance of the season, the pair brought their dream autumnal theme to life by setting a stunning scene using warm tones and rich textures.

Playing off the exposed brick and industrial features of the space, an eye-catching chuppah covered in overgrown fall foliage and fresh blooms was the statement piece of the ceremony. For the reception that followed, long wooden tables were adorned with moody centerpieces, moss table numbers, and candles for a moody woodland feel. Meanwhile, overhead string lights gave a warm glow to the cozy affair.

With the help of their fantastic team of vendors, the couple pulled off a gorgeous and relaxed celebration, allowing them to enjoy every moment with their loved ones and each other. To see how the two grooms infused their big day with their own unique styles and combined it with the spectacular details of fall, scroll through these images captured by Natasha Shapiro

Brian and Brian

The Wedding:

Lucas Confectionery, Troy, New York, United States

Why They Wanted A Fall Inspired Lucas Confectionery Wedding

There was no question that our wedding would have an autumnal forest vibe, as we’re both autumn and nature lovers. We went for a color palette with various tones of green, burgundy, burnt orange, and pops of metallic copper to give a tasteful but not overly themed feel. Our chuppah and table arrangements were where the forest vibe shone through with an explosion of fall foliage, stunning florals, velvet mushrooms, and candle-lit lanterns with a tree branch motif to give a moody, magical ambiance to our venue. It can be challenging to see the big picture when all the bits and pieces come from different vendors, websites, and stores. But everything worked together beautifully to create the vision that we had in our heads.

Choosing Wedding Attire That Reflected Their Individual Style But Kept With The Theme

For our outfits, we went with suits that fit our vibe and personal aesthetics. I wore a forest green suit with a stag’s head neck piece in place of a bowtie. Brian L. wore a fitted burnt orange plaid suit with an oak leaf collar chain in place of a bowtie. We also had an incredible dried floral artist from Etsy create two unique boutonnieres that tied the whole look together. Topping it off were two matching white kippahs with a tree branch and leaf motif. For our wedding party, we continued the theme with velvet dresses in varied shades of fall foliage for the ladies and ginger-colored pants with coordinating leather suspenders and velvet bowties for the gentlemen.

Mixing Jewish And Irish Traditions To Create A Blended Lucas Confectionery Ceremony

For our ceremony, we had our lovely friend, Karen, officiate. We worked with her for two months, crafting our dream ceremony. I am Jewish, so we wanted to have many Jewish wedding elements in the ceremony. These included a ketubah, a chuppah, a wine blessing, and smashing the glass at the end of the ceremony. Brian L. is Irish, so we also wanted to include many elements from his heritage. These included the tree of life and other symbols and doing a handfasting portion in our ceremony. We each wrote our vows, and rather than doing the typical Seven Blessings, common in Jewish weddings, we had eight of our friends and family write their blessings for us and our new lives together. And lastly, we had our corgi, Merlin, as one of our attendants.

Having An Intentional Moment Alone To Take It All In

The most memorable part of the day was right after the ceremony. In Jewish weddings, couples often have a yichud, which stems from the Hebrew word for “together.” This is when the couple comes together and spends time alone before the reception. We enjoyed doing this because it allowed us to take a moment alone to breathe and enjoy each other’s company as a newly married couple.

Autumn-Inspired Personalized Lucas ConfectioneryWedding Favors

Brian L. owns a candle company called Puck’s Offending Shadows, so we gifted each of our guests with an 8-ounce candle. We worked together to design the unique scent, which featured notes of black amber, plum, apple, cinnamon, and cedarwood. Each candle was in a matte green jar with a copper lid and a label we designed ourselves. The end product was simply stunning.

Personalized DIY Autumn-Themed Lucas Confectionery Wedding Details

We created several decor and accessory pieces to enhance the autumnal forest vibe, including flower girl mossy birch bark baskets, complete with metallic copper skeleton leaves. We also designed and crafted several signs for our donut flavors, signature cocktails, gift area, and guestbook. These signs were enhanced with pressed floral stickers to give them an antique botanical print look. Our guestbook was also DIY’d. Our guests wrote their well wishes on large river rocks with a copper pen. We laid these in a hammered copper bowl on a bed of moss. It was really quite beautiful.

Advice From The Couple: Carve Some Time To Relax Before The Wedding

As simple (or unrealistic) as it may sound: relax. With all of the stressful planning and work that goes into the wedding process, it’s essential to take a step back and appreciate everything that’s going on. To help us relax for the big day, we did a spa day a few days before the wedding. It really helped us chill out and enjoy each other’s company before our guests came to town.

Kate Moss’ Garden Party Inspired This Sherwood Park Wedding

November 21, 2022 | justine

When an extrovert marries an introvert, it’s a unique situation with its own set of challenges. But for Catherine and Mandy, when the time came to tie the knot, they found beautiful ways to find a happy medium. Inspired by Kate Moss’ garden nuptials back in 2011, the pair echoed the style at their Sherwood Park wedding with stylish wedding fashion, eye-catching florals and decor, and a sophisticated, edgy vibe. And Chelsea Abram Photography was there to capture every unforgettable moment and detail.

Keeping things relaxed and stress-free, the couple started their day with rainy private vows at the parking lot. It was followed by an intimate park ceremony with only their nearest and dearest. An aisle lined with colorful potted greenery that led to a lush arch transformed the outdoor space into a romantic setting for their big day. They ended with a picnic complete with artisan charcuterie boards, gourmet sandwiches, and of course, lawn games!

In addition to the thoughtful details, the pair’s complementing ensembles were the standout features of their day. Catherine’s plunging blazer dress brought the modern glam, while Mandy looked fierce in a black plunging pantsuit. If you and your partner are in search of creative ways to add personality to your intimate celebration–whether at a park or backyard–then this wedding is the perfect place to start drawing inspiration from.

The Couple:

Catherine and Mandy

The Wedding:

Sherwood Park, United Kingdom

How Their Sherwood Park Wedding Came To Be

I had a lot of fun planning our wedding. Mandy wanted to elope because she’s very introverted. She hates big events, detests small talk, and would rather sit on a hot grill than be the center of attention. On the other hand, I’m an event planner. I love parties and my family, so I knew I needed to find a happy medium for us and ensure that Mandy would be comfortable. The only wedding that ever inspired me was Kate Moss’s English Countryside Garden Party in 2011. Sherwood Park in Toronto gives off that vibe, and it happens to be a park we frequented with our dog, who loves the off-leash hiking area. I used brighter colors and had a much more camp style, but that was my inspiration. I spray painted a badminton set lilac, had other grass games, and brought all of the quilts my mom had made me to make picnic areas that kids, dogs, and families could sit on. We made flower crowns and bright fans for people to use. I tried to make it as fun and whimsical as possible.

Exchanging Private Vows In The Car During The Rain

On the day, we were really late, and it had been pouring when we were going to do our private vows, so we ended up popping our trunk and doing it in the parking lot. It set the mood and helped us relax.

Pulling Off Planning A Low-Cost Sherwood Park Wedding

We didn’t have a budget, but we wanted it to be as chic, cheap, and cheerful as possible. We were simultaneously buying a condo, and we love traveling, so we tried to keep costs at a minimum. All in all, we paid $17,000. That included our honeymoon and wedding bands.

Adjusting When Things Didn’t Go According To Planned

There were many surprises before our big day! And as it turns out, it was all of the things that became our favorites. When all the rentals were canceled the week before the wedding, I had to DIY everything. Luckily I found VintageBASH, and they were willing to work with me on the arch, which made the entire wedding. I spray-painted buckets, flower pots, and lawn games for hours. I gave myself five minutes to freak out, then called a friend and started brainstorming.

Bringing Their Sherwood Park Wedding Vision To Life

Getting married can be stressful because of all of the expectations from other people. When I told people we were getting married in a park, they looked at me like I was crazy. I think big weddings are gorgeous, but that’s not our vibe. So I’m proud we stuck to what felt right and pulled off a sustainable micro wedding

Congratulations to Catherine and Amanda on their Sherwood Park wedding. And many thanks to Chelsea Abram Photography for beautifully capturing all the special details and moments that made their celebration one for the books.

The “big day” doesn’t necessarily mean big in numbers. And when it comes to planning a wedding with a partner who prefers a more intimate and relaxed affair, a small wedding like this fits the bill. With some tweaks to old traditions and some customization to suit your needs, both of you can have the wedding of your dreams and enjoy every minute of it!
