Gabriella and Eric’s love story began in 2018 when they met at a bar and talked all night. Life took them in different directions, and they lost touch, but fate had other plans. A year later, they reconnected at a graduation party for a mutual friend. “We didn’t remember how we’d met before, but the connection was immediate,” Gabriella shared. As they got to know each other, they realized they had unknowingly crossed paths many times before. “It was like the universe had been quietly nudging us together all along.”

Their White Elephant Nantucket wedding was a vibrant, floral-filled affair that perfectly blended the elegant aesthetic of Bridgerton with the laid-back charm of coastal New England. Gabriella, who planned the wedding herself while studying for the bar exam, infused every detail with personal touches. The wedding festivities began long before the ceremony. Gabriella hosted a brunch for her bridesmaids as a heartfelt thank-you for their support. “It was a really fun way to enjoy each other’s company before the wedding,” she said.

On Thursday, the couple held an intimate rehearsal dinner at The Proprietors, a tapas-style restaurant in Nantucket. The evening featured vibrant farmers’ market florals, delicious food, and cocktails with their closest friends and family. The next night, they welcomed all their guests at the famous Cru Oyster Bar, setting the tone for the celebration ahead. “It was fantastic to be surrounded by everyone we love.” The night ended with spontaneous bar hopping in downtown Nantucket, adding to the weekend’s fun atmosphere.

A Wardrobe Fit for a Wedding Weekend: Custom Suits, Dream Dresses, and Statement Shoes

With a four-day wedding weekend came multiple outfit changes. Gabriella had so many ensembles that she and her mother had to bring a second car onto the island just for her wardrobe!

“I knew I wanted my dress to be unique. I didn’t want a plain white dress, but I also didn’t want anything too colorful,” she explained. She found her dream gown at Lelite Bridal in Boston, a stunning piece adorned with handmade florals. To complement it, she wore custom-made shoes from Bella Bridal Shoes, intricately designed with beaded fabric butterflies.

Eric, who is 6’5”, struggles with off-the-rack suits, so he opted for custom attire. “Because of the garden party aesthetic and bright colors, he wore a navy suit to the rehearsal, a tan suit to the welcome party, and a blue and black tuxedo to the wedding,” Gabriella said. All his looks were tailor-made in Boston.

The bridesmaids embraced a mismatched lilac theme, selecting dresses they felt beautiful in, while the groomsmen sported classic black tuxedos, allowing Eric’s bold blue tux to stand out.

A First Look, Private Vows, and More Time for Cocktails

Gabriella and Eric decided on a first look to maximize their time with guests. “We’re big foodies, so when we heard that doing a first look meant we’d have more time to enjoy our cocktail hour, we were sold!” she laughed. The moment was emotional, and private vows made it even more intimate. “I was worried it would take away from the aisle moment, but it absolutely didn’t. If anything, it added to the anticipation and excitement.”

Gabriella also shared a first look with her father, a moment she cherished deeply. “He made the entire wedding happen and never asked me to contribute anything. Having a quiet moment with him away from the chaos was incredibly special.”

A Private Church Ceremony and a Childhood Dream Wedding Come True

Before their wedding, Gabriella and Eric had a small church ceremony near their hometown with just immediate family. They followed it with a big Italian dinner at her parents’ house.

The White Elephant Nantucket had always held a special place in Gabriella’s heart. “I had been visiting for years and distinctly remember eating there with my father. He once told me he hoped I’d get married there one day.”

With their love for the beach and many guests flying in regardless, a destination wedding on the island was the perfect choice. The stunning natural beauty of Nantucket, especially the White Elephant, made for an unforgettable setting.

 

Handcrafted Invitations, Live Art, and a Feast to Remember at Their White Elephant Nantucket Wedding

Every detail of the wedding was thoughtfully designed, including their invitations and save-the-dates. “We worked with a fantastic artist who collaborated with us every step of the way,” Gabriella said. The final designs included custom illustrations of their favorite island spots.

To incorporate her love of art into the wedding day, Gabriella hired an artist to create live sketches of guests, giving them a one-of-a-kind watercolor keepsake. Another artist painted on oyster shells, which doubled as table decor.

The couple put equal effort into curating the menu. “We love to eat, so making sure we had an amazing dinner was really important to us.” They opted for a large head table instead of a sweetheart table. “Some of my favorite moments were sitting there, surrounded by our best friends,” Gabriella shared.

Their celebration drew loved ones from around the world, with guests traveling from 12 states, as well as Australia and Italy. The party lasted well past midnight, thanks to the incredible Boston Common Band. “We were supposed to leave by 12, but we kept dancing until 1:30 a.m.!”

The festivities wrapped up with a Sunday brunch, a final opportunity to spend time with guests before they headed home. “It was such a beautiful way to end the weekend.”

Finding the Perfect Vendors,  Balancing Budget, and Embracing Wedding Day Surprises with Grace

Planning their White Elephant Nantucket wedding came with its challenges, including hidden import fees and island costs. “I knew I wanted to focus the budget on the venue and florals. Once that was set, everything else fell into place,” Gabriella explained.

She found most of her vendors through Instagram and Zola, choosing those whose work resonated with her. “I spent so much time looking through portfolios to find people who could make our dream day come to life.”

The morning of the wedding, unexpected guests meant there weren’t enough of the gold chairs Gabriella had rented to match the tablescape. “My vendor swapped them out on the spot, and now I can’t imagine the wedding without them. Everything worked out as it was supposed to.”

Her biggest piece of advice? “I had so much anxiety the morning of my wedding. I wish I had trusted that everything would be perfect and just enjoyed the moment. Eventually, the stress faded, and we had the most incredible day.”

8. For larger weddings, consider extra facilities to keep everyone comfortable

When researching properties, one very important thing that most people forget is the facilities. Are there enough restrooms to accommodate your guest list? If not, you should consider supplementing with rentals. There are so many options for upscale portable toilet trailers that provide a comfortable experience, including lighting, mirrors, sinks, and—most importantly—more space than traditional port-o-potties.

Opting for a three-year engagement, the couple took their time planning, making thoughtful choices without stress or rushed decisions. “It meant we could spend the first year just gathering ideas, and by the time vendors opened bookings for summer 2024, we already knew exactly who we wanted.” 

Since nearly all their guests traveled from out of town, the couple made the wedding week just as special as the big day itself. “We planned outings so guests could experience the beauty of British Columbia—group hikes, welcome drinks at The Beer Farmers, and poolside hangouts at Pemberton Valley Lodge. By the time the wedding rolled around, everyone had already bonded, which made the day even more fun!”

A Dream Dress, a No-Fuss Suit, and a Bridesmaid Challenge Worth the Effort

Jessica had her heart set on the MWL Huxley wedding dress long before she even tried it on. “I obsessed over it for months, and when I finally put it on, I knew it was the one,” she said. Lewis, on the other hand, took a much simpler approach. “He walked into Jack Davison Bespoke, picked a suit color from a book of swatches, and that was it. It was tailor-made and absolutely perfect for him.”

The bridesmaid dresses, however, were a different story. “Trying to coordinate mismatched floral dresses for seven women across four cities and two continents was easily the hardest part of planning. But it was so worth it in the end!”

A Love Story Meant for the Mountains, a Sentimental Tribute, and a Champagne-Soaked Surprise

The couple exchanged vows beneath the sweeping willow trees at North Arm Farm—a venue they had fallen in love with years before they were even engaged. “One of my friend’s sisters attended a wedding there, and when I saw it on her Instagram story, I knew it was perfect for us. The mountains, the open air, the effortless beauty—it just screamed ‘us.’ I sent a screenshot to Lewis, and he instantly replied, ‘We are 100% getting married there!’”

Two years later, when they got engaged, Lewis didn’t hesitate when Jessica asked where they should get married. “He said, ‘What do you mean? We’ve already found the perfect place.’ When we finally visited in person, our jaws dropped. It was even more beautiful than we imagined. It was also the perfect setting to showcase Canada’s staggering beauty—not just for our friends and family traveling from England, but also for my loved ones from Winnipeg who had never been to rural BC. Even now, when we look back at the photos, we have to pinch ourselves. We can’t believe we got married in such a stunning place.”

Instead of a first look, the couple saw each other for the first time at the altar. “The moment I saw Lewis, everything else melted away. We were both overcome with pure joy, love, and excitement,” Jessica recalled.

They also found a heartfelt way to honor Lewis’ late mother. “I surprised Lewis with a white feather in his boutonniere and in my bouquet—something only he and I would understand the significance of. We also melted down one of her rings and split the gold between our wedding bands, adding a diamond from her ring into each. It was our way of keeping her close to us.”

Of course, no wedding is complete without an unforgettable moment of chaos. “Right after the ceremony, before we even took photos with each other or our guests, Lewis and I lined up with our wedding party for a champagne spray photo. Unfortunately, Lewis popped his bottle at the most perfectly imperfect height, and champagne shot me straight in the face, drenching half my hair! The photo was totally worth it, though, and now I have something to tease him about forever!”

The reception was a joyful celebration filled with heartfelt toasts, laughter, and meaningful personal touches. One of the most memorable moments came when their MC—and Lewis’ brother-in-law—surprised them with a traditional Scottish toast. He raised a dram of whiskey mixed with water he had secretly gathered from their pre-wedding hike. “It was such a beautiful, personal moment—one we’ll always remember.”

The couple’s friends and family played a big role in making their day extra special:

  • Jessica’s best friends from nursing school—her only local friends in BC—DIY’d their stunning seating chart. “Brittany picked up, shortened, and even engraved the wooden ladder, while Leanna and Bri saved their wine bottles and added seating chart stickers.”
  • Since they both love nature, their wedding favors were hand-pressed local flowers placed in mini metal frames, allowing guests to take a little piece of the day home with them.
  • As a nod to their love story, they brought over Tequila Rose shots from England for everyone to enjoy during the reception. “Lewis and I met backpacking in New Zealand, and our drink of choice back then was tequila. It felt like the perfect little tribute to that chapter of our story,” Jessica explained.

One of the absolute highlights of the night was their grand entrance. “Our MC did an incredible job getting everyone fired up, and our guests truly gave it their all! People were standing on chairs, waving napkins, singing, and dancing along. It was the biggest adrenaline rush—we could feel the love, excitement, and happiness radiating from every single person. It meant so much to us.”

Embracing the Moment: A Stress-Free Destination Wedding in Canada

Despite the inevitable little hiccups that come with any wedding, they remained completely unbothered. “Honestly, we were on such a high that nothing fazed us whatsoever. We had an amazing team of vendors who handled everything like absolute pros. If anything didn’t go exactly to plan, we didn’t even notice—we were just so happy and excited to be married and celebrating with our loved ones. Nothing else mattered.”

Looking back on their wedding, Jessica and Lewis have one key piece of advice for engaged couples: don’t be afraid to take time for your portraits. “We made sure to carve out plenty of time just for the two of us, and we are SO glad we did. Those moments allowed us to pause, soak in the day, and simply be together—it was truly special.”

As for their three-year engagement? They wouldn’t change a thing. “It was the best decision we made. The first year was all about exploring vendors’ work on social media and refining our vision—completely stress-free. By the time year two rolled around, we knew exactly what we wanted and were able to book our dream team the moment their summer 2024 calendars opened. Because of that, we had an incredible lineup that truly brought our wedding to life. Taking our time made all the difference, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

I was lucky to trust her to make the best decisions at the moment.”

A Unique Vow Renewal Celebrating Community, Connection, and Dance

The reception carried this spirit of community and celebration forward, infused with the same mystical energy. A personalized tarot seating chart added a unique touch. “I personally pulled tarot cards for each guest, selecting one that reflected their soul’s purpose based on their birthday. It was a way for them to connect inward through reflection while also sharing the experience with others.”

“We served food family-style to encourage conversation and make it feel like a true dinner among family.” They also worked with their DJ to curate a playlist that felt true to them while avoiding overplayed songs. “The dance floor was packed all night! We danced until the very end—when we left, our guests left with us because they stayed until the last song.”

Eve also shared a mother-daughter dance in addition to a first dance with Chris. “My mom has always loved to dance—she passed that love on to me. So when we were discussing the dances, she spoke up and said that’s how she wanted to celebrate. It was such a fun moment and a huge hit!”

For the reception, Eve changed into a 1920s-inspired flapper dress, embracing the glamour and freedom of the era. “For my dancing look, I wanted to be extremely comfortable first and foremost, and then playful and fun. I have always loved 1920s flapper style and art deco. The freedom and glamour of flappers felt right, so it was a natural fit to pull this in for the party part of the evening.”

The couple’s dedication to finding vendors who truly understood their vision was evident in every detail. She resonated with our esoteric ideas, and from there, we trusted her guidance.”

You won’t regret taking the extra time to incorporate deeper meaning into your celebration. Those details will be felt and remembered long after the day is over. Lastly, let go—especially on the day itself. By that time, you’ve done everything you can. Now it’s time to be fully in the moment and enjoy every second.”

A Colombian Couple’s Intentional DIY Destination Wedding in Sintra, Portugal Proves You Don’t Need a Big Budget for Big Style

Carolina and Juan’s love story is as serendipitous as their wedding was intentional. The couple first met in university in their hometown of Cali, Colombia, where they briefly dated before becoming just friends. Life took them on separate journeys, but fate had other plans. Without knowing it, they both moved to Europe around the same time—Carolina to Portugal and Juan to France. They reconnected, started a long-distance relationship, and after two years of traveling back and forth, Carolina moved to Paris to join Juan and begin their life together. A year later, he proposed, and the couple decided to eventually settle in Portugal, which also became their DIY destination wedding location.

The couple envisioned a wedding that felt intimate, beautiful, and fun without the pressure of extravagance. They found the perfect venue at Quinta de São Thiago, nestled in the lush hills of Sintra. “We wanted a venue that felt dreamy and was already beautiful on its own, without much need for extra decor,” Carolina shares. “We also wanted a place where close family and friends could spend the night.”

From the very beginning, Carolina and Juan took on the planning themselves. “I’ve always been a super crafty, hands-on person and knew I could tackle this project,” Carolina says. “We didn’t really have the budget for a wedding planner, so we did a lot of the work ourselves.” Their planning process started with a Pinterest board to define the overall look and feel, and their top priority was securing a venue early so guests flying in from different countries had time to sort their flights.

With a keen eye for design, the couple prioritized photography and videography to preserve their special memories. “We were quite picky when choosing a photographer because we wanted someone who truly understood the vibe of our wedding, and Junebug vendor João Pedro Felix did that perfectly,” Carolina shares. As a heartfelt gift, a dear friend also filmed their wedding on Super 8, adding a nostalgic, cinematic touch to their memories.

Carolina designed their invitations, welcome signs, and menus, while her mother, a fashion designer, sewed custom table runners, decorative ribbons, and even Carolina’s two wedding dresses. “She was so happy to be in charge of my dresses. I wanted something simple and elegant for the main dress and something a bit more fun for the second one.” 

Among the many memorable moments, one that stood out was their vow exchange. “Since we did so much of the wedding ourselves, we were quite stressed leading up to it. We hadn’t even had time to write our vows until the night before! But once we were up there, looking at each other all dressed up, surrounded by our friends and family, saying beautiful words to each other, it all made sense and was all worth it.”

The couple worked within a tight budget, relying on their creativity and the generosity of their loved ones to bring their big day to life. “My mom was a huge help during the whole process, especially in the last few weeks leading up to the wedding,” Carolina shares. “But also, lots of our close family pitched in, helping us with last-minute details. Our friends were super supportive and a big help.” Despite financial constraints, they remained committed to their aesthetic vision. “We prioritized having good food and good vibes. We wanted everything to look beautiful, as we are both very aesthetically driven. We didn’t want to sacrifice having the wedding of our dreams due to a tighter budget—and we didn’t!”

While many couples opt for a formal multi-course meal, the couple took a different route. “We realized catering would be a huge chunk of our budget, and we didn’t even want a formal dinner,” Carolina explains. “Instead, we decided to serve some of our favorite food—pizza and fries!” They found an amazing sourdough pizza restaurant to make fresh, made-to-order pizzas for each guest, and for cocktail hour, they hired a company specializing in truffle fries and croquettes. “Everybody loved it.”

As a pastry chef, Carolina took on the challenge of making her own wedding cake and a special dessert bar filled with homemade cookies. “All my friends and family know and love my cookies, so I made about 150 mini cookies in various flavors and served them buffet-style after dinner,” she says.

Planning a wedding from scratch is no small feat, and Carolina offers honest advice: “Being so hands-on in the wedding planning process is definitely not for everyone! It was quite challenging, but I also really enjoyed it. Planning, creating a vibe, food, florals, and hosting are all things I love and am very passionate about, so it was amazing to do all these things for our own wedding.” Her biggest takeaway? “I couldn’t have done it without the help of loved ones. My biggest tip is don’t be afraid to ask for help! People who love you want to see you happy on your big day and are most likely very willing to help in any way they can—just ask.”

Renting a camper van, they packed it full of holiday treats (pies included) and drove down Highway 1, stopping for scenic naps and campsite cooking. Their journey led them to Big Sur, where they camped along the river, surrounded by towering redwoods. That trip made Big Sur special to them, so when it came time to choose a wedding location, they knew there was no better place. “If our families were going to travel for the wedding, we wanted them to experience what we thought was the most beautiful place in California.”

The evening before their Big Sur wedding, Casey and Michael hosted a rehearsal dinner that blended Filipino heritage with heartfelt connection. “Our wedding party wore traditional Barong Tagalogs and Filipiniana dresses made from pineapple fiber, which felt like a beautiful way to honor my roots,” Casey said. “That night was about so much more than just practicing for the big day. We had long conversations with family members we had never met, friends connecting with our pastor—it felt like everyone was coming together in the most beautiful way.” The welcome party followed, complete with appetizers, drinks, and a collodion tintype photographer capturing timeless portraits of the guests.

From the start, the couple leaned into the natural surroundings. The theme came together around Michael’s favorite flower, the California Golden Poppy, inspiring a vibrant color palette of poppy orange, oceanic teal-blue, and rich brown from the redwoods.

The groomsmen wore teal-blue suits, while the bridesmaids donned flowing dresses in shades of golden poppy. The man of honor’s white suit was embroidered with golden poppies and a California quail, the state bird, tying in even more local inspiration.

The wedding day itself started with an unexpected twist. Casey, waiting for her turn in hair and makeup, decided to grab breakfast for her bridesmaids. As she waited for the food, she was offered a cup of tea. Somehow, the tea slipped, spilling onto her chest. “I panicked and dunked myself into a water fountain outside the roadhouse,” she recalled. “The next thing I knew, Mike and his groomsmen were nearby, trying to avoid seeing me before the ceremony, and I was calling out for him.”

As fate would have it, an EMT happened to be at the roadhouse and quickly jumped in to help. Within minutes, Casey and Mike were in an ambulance on their way to the emergency room—a 40-minute drive away. She suffered second-degree burns across her chest and upper body, injuries that would leave permanent scars. But despite the pain, she opted for minimal medication so she could fully experience her big day. “As crazy as it was, that morning grounded us. It reminded us that nothing mattered more than being there for each other.”

With her wounds treated, Casey returned just in time for a magical ceremony beneath the redwoods, the Big Sur River flowing nearby. Guests were seated in a semi-circle for an intimate setting, with minimal decorations to let the landscape shine. The couple exchanged vows in a deeply personal ceremony, incorporating Filipino wedding traditions.

“We included a cord and veil ceremony, a meaningful Filipino tradition. Our parents placed a cord and veil on us, symbolizing unity and protection. We also chose a reading, ‘To Love is Not to Possess’ by James Kavanaugh, beautifully read by the groom’s close friend, Seth. Pastor Sovory, a longtime family friend, delivered a homily that reflected on the sacredness of the land, surrounded by ancient trees and the flowing river—it truly set the tone for our ceremony. All our family and friends played such a big role in making it happen. It was incredibly grounding.”

Afterward, they changed into more comfortable clothes. Casey switched into an ivory high-neck dress that wasn’t originally planned but was perfect for covering her bandages. Luis, her man of honor, had cleverly fashioned a tulle shawl during the ceremony to conceal the burns until she could change. “That little moment of practicality really saved the day!” Once changed, they joined their friends and family at the roadhouse for cocktail hour, where they signed the marriage license. “It felt like a more relaxed and intimate time with our mothers, who co-signed the license, before we dove into the rest of the celebration.”

The reception continued the couple’s California-inspired vision, with tables decorated in wildflower arrangements and earthy textures that echoed the surroundings. Guests dined on locally sourced dishes, with a menu designed to highlight fresh, seasonal ingredients. “We wanted our wedding to feel like an extension of Big Sur—natural, vibrant, and welcoming.” 

 

Personal touches and DIY elements made their big day feel even more intimate and reflective of the couple’s journey together. Casey and her mother took on the florals, crafting all the bouquets, boutonnieres, and arrangements by hand. She also designed the printed signage, ensuring every detail felt true to their vision. Meanwhile, Steve, the groom’s dad, handcrafted custom wooden table signs, each named after a meaningful place in California. Their head table, for example, was named after their shared address in San Francisco—a nod to the life they’ve built together.

One of the highlights of the night? The music. A string quartet made up of students from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music played during the ceremony, while DJ Adam Millman kept the dance floor packed all night.

“There were so many unforgettable moments that made our celebration truly special. One of the highlights was our first dance as a married couple, along with the father-daughter and mother-son dances under the stars, surrounded by our closest family and friends.”

“We loved seeing everyone letting loose on the dance floor, it was so much fun to watch!” The bride’s parents shared a slow dance to the same song that played at their wedding years ago, a touching full-circle moment that filled the night with love and joy.

Thoughtful details extended beyond the décor. Michael assembled the guest gift bags, which included Filipino desserts as a tribute to Casey’s heritage, and personally crafted the confetti cones that hung on guests’ chairs during the ceremony. As the newlyweds walked down the aisle, a shower of confetti filled the air.

Even the cake table carried sentimental weight. Framed wedding photos of their parents and grandparents surrounded the display, adding a sense of history and connection. But one of Michael’s favorite details? The cake topper—a pair of tiny alpacas dressed as a bride and groom—playful, personal, and a perfect reflection of the couple’s fun-loving spirit.

For Casey and Michael, the biggest priorities in their budget were location and food. “We wanted our guests to feel comfortable and well-fed throughout the day. From the ceremony to the reception and even by the firepit later in the evening, we made sure there was always something to snack on.” They allocated the bulk of their budget to catering and the venue, ensuring they had all the necessary rentals to make the space inviting without overshadowing its natural beauty.

Attire was another key consideration. The couple covered the cost of their wedding party’s outfits for both the rehearsal dinner and wedding day to ensure no one felt burdened. “We were particular about our own clothing choices, but we also wanted our loved ones to feel taken care of.”

One area where they saved? Florals. Instead of splurging, the bride and her mom, Christine, took a hands-on approach, designing and arranging all the bouquets, boutonnieres, and floral décor themselves. With help from family, the arrangements were safely transported and set up by their coordinator on the big day.

Their careful budgeting was made possible thanks to Casey’s mom, who generously covered most of the costs. “She was so excited to be part of the process, and we were incredibly grateful for her support. It gave us the flexibility to be thoughtful about how we spent, making sure every decision added to the experience and comfort of our guests.”

Looking back, they have two key pieces of advice for future couples—one practical and one personal. “Tactically, make sure you understand exactly what’s included with your venue before booking, especially when it comes to rentals like tables and chairs. Get a detailed list of what’s provided and a full quote from the rental company, including delivery and setup fees. We were shocked to find that delivery costs were nearly as high as the rentals themselves, so having this information upfront is crucial.”

Beyond logistics, their biggest takeaway was learning to embrace the unexpected. “We had an ER visit on our wedding day, and yet it was still one of the best days of our lives. Things won’t always go as planned, but if you focus on each other and what truly matters, those unplanned moments can bring you even closer. If spending time together makes you feel calmer, don’t feel pressured to follow traditions—do what feels right for you. For us, sticking together through it all made the day even more special.”

This Winnipeg Art Gallery Wedding Embodies the Spirit of a Moody, Romantic Dinner Party

When Jacqueline and Michael met in their first year of medical school, they couldn’t have predicted how quickly their friendship would evolve. “We went from friends to more than friends pretty quickly,” Jacqueline shares. After weathering the pandemic together as each other’s primary contact, they discovered just how compatible they truly were, bonding over shared passions for “family, friends, food, travel and our careers.”

From the beginning of their wedding planning journey, the couple had a clear vision. “Our top priority above all was to have fun and for our loved ones to do the same,” Jacqueline explains. “We wanted our guests to feel both at ease and part of something truly special from the moment they arrived.” This guiding principle shaped every decision they made, from venue selection to menu planning.

“Anything to ensure that feeling was a priority of ours in the budget,” she continues. “For us this meant that outstanding food, wine, flowers and other decor were essential.” The result was an October 2024 wedding at the Winnipeg Art Gallery that felt like the ultimate dinner party—intimate, sophisticated, and deeply personal.

“We love hosting our friends and family at our home. If we could have fit 150 people in our dining room we would have! There is no better feeling to us than sitting down for a beautiful cozy meal and sharing laughs and memories with the people we love.” With the help of their planners, they created exactly that feeling, just on a larger scale.

On the morning of the wedding, the couple opted for a first look at 529, an iconic Winnipeg steakhouse where they’ve shared many special meals. The restaurant’s classic interior provided a sophisticated backdrop for photos of the couple and their wedding party.

Both Jacqueline and Michael kept their fashion choices deliberately simple. Jacqueline wore a sleek off-the-shoulder gown with a statement train and fingertip-length veil, while the wedding party dressed in black to emphasize the rich floral arrangements by Stone House Creative.

The first look transitioned into one of the day’s most significant moments: the Ketubah signing. “Our Ketubah is our most cherished physical memory from that day,” Jacqueline notes. The document blended her Jewish heritage with Michael’s Irish Catholic roots, incorporating Celtic knots and a Claddagh alongside traditional Hebrew text.

“Neither of us are particularly religious, but we both feel a strong connection to our cultures,” explains Jacqueline. “We wanted the more formal parts of our wedding day to bring these elements together to make it uniquely ours.”

For the ceremony, guests gathered in the intimate Skylight Gallery of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The couple chose their medical school classmate, Juan, to officiate. “Juan has been a champion of our relationship from day one,” Jacqueline says. “We knew he would be able to create a beautiful and meaningful ceremony that represented us well.”

Walking down the aisle to “Dreams” by The Cranberries played by a string quartet, the couple exchanged handwritten vows under their beautiful chuppah. The intimate gallery setting allowed Jacqueline and Michael to feel fully surrounded by loved ones.

Though Jacqueline’s mother passed away in 2017, her presence was felt throughout the day. “She was honored in every vow and speech,” Jacqueline remembers.

Following the ceremony, guests moved downstairs of the Winnipeg Art Gallery to a cocktail hour that reflected the couple’s idea of a perfect gathering. That meant an oyster bar and dirty martinis for everyone.

The reception space revealed the full expression of their vision: a sophisticated dinner party with rich, deep colors. “Early on in the planning process, we told our planners we wanted the room to feel like a juicy glass of red wine, and they nailed it,” says Jacqueline. The deep purples and reds not only created a dramatic contrast against the Tyndall stone walls of the gallery but also added a romantic, moody feeling that the couple envisioned.

Dinner, catered by Wow! Catering, earned high praise. “We had multiple guests report to us that it was by far the best wedding food they had ever had,” Jacqueline notes proudly. Another essential personal touch was the Guinness on tap, as a nod to Michael’s Irish roots. 

Throughout dinner, speeches alternated with live acoustic music. One particularly moving moment came when Jacqueline’s aunt Rachel and family friend Sari spoke on behalf of the mother of the bride. “They perfectly captured my mom’s essence, and there was not a dry eye in the room,” says Jacqueline.

After dinner, DJ Karli Colpitts started the dancing with the Horah, the traditional Jewish celebratory dance, before transitioning to contemporary music that kept everyone on the dance floor.

For this portion of the evening, Jacqueline changed into what she describes as “one of my favorite outfits I have ever worn”—a white blazer with subtle sparkle. “I gravitate to more straight lines and masculine cuts, so it was perfect for me yet still bridal,” she shares.

One unexpected highlight came when Jacqueline’s maid of honor and best friend, Morgan, took over as guest DJ. “It was a running joke that she would learn to DJ in time for our wedding so she could have a set, and she did it—black gown and all!” Jacqueline recalls. “Her set truly got the party going.”

Looking back, Jacqueline offers three pieces of practical advice for couples planning their weddings: “Plan the wedding you’d want to attend—it keeps you focused on what truly matters.”

She also suggests focusing on how you want to feel: “Consider how you want to feel that day, and make choices that support that vision. We, personally, wanted to feel surrounded by love and laughter and for our guests to feel the same.”

Finally, she acknowledges the value of professional help: “We had no idea how to plan a wedding going into this, so for us our wedding planners were essential,” though she recognizes this isn’t possible for everyone. Her advice? “If you’re unsure where to start, professional planners can be invaluable.”

What’s perhaps most surprising about their planning journey was how stress-free it felt. “We were often asked if we were stressed leading up to the wedding and we surprisingly never were,” Jacqueline reveals. “This is a huge testament to our planners.” Working with Soiree Planning, the couple created a celebration that was both meticulously organized and genuinely personal—a true reflection of their shared values and vision for the future.
