Viking-Themed Gather Greene Wedding

Wedding inspiration can be drawn from many sources. When the time came for Fei and Matthew to tie the knot, they turned to their diverse backgrounds for wedding day ideas. With a sculptural venue perched on scenic acres of the Hudson Valley, a rich and luxurious color palette, and spectacular floral displays—their Gather Greene wedding strikes just the right balance of rustic coziness and modern romance. 

With its picturesque views peeking through the wooden screen walls and soaring arched ceilings, the open-air pavilion was the perfect setting for their special day. A dramatic floral installation that echoed the curves of the space served as the focal point for both the ceremony and reception. To top it all off, their stunning tablescape featured wildflowers and moss for a touch of whimsy, while taper candles and lanterns added a beautiful glow.

In honor of the bride’s heritage, the pair changed into the customary red and gold embroidered attire for the tea ceremony. Their celebration was truly a beautiful mix of Scandinavian charm and Chinese tradition. Manna Sun Events’ Insights On How This Gather Greene Wedding Was Brought To Life

This Viking-themed wedding is filled with details and romance, and it’s one-of-a-kind. During the initial consultation, the couple expressed their preferences and interests in Viking culture. Manna Sun Events took on the challenge and did plenty of research into this unique culture before starting any actual design. The challenge was to design a wedding that embraced and paired two different cultures–initially far from each other–while coming together in celebration. The Gather Greene was an ideal place and provided a minimalist Scandinavian feeling and a breathtaking backdrop. The couple wanted a location that was inspiring on its own yet provided a blank canvas for us to build an experience.

Choosing A Color Palette That Complemented The Venue And Season

We chose a complimentary color palette that showcased the tones of the coming fall. We also utilized colors of the couple’s family lineage and history. Using complementary shades of green, orange, and red–as seen in the lounge area and table setting–it immediately brightened up the atmosphere. 

Incorporating A Traditional Tea Ceremony

In keeping with tradition, Matthew dressed up in a red suit embroidered with a dragon pattern and knelt with Fei, who was wearing an embroidered red Qun Kwa, and served tea to their parents, in-laws, and other family members. Even though the bride’s mother couldn’t make it to the wedding, the hosting of this traditional Chinese tea ceremony and the enthusiasm of all the participants made Fei feel loved, cared for, and supported. It was a touching moment that symbolized the union of two families, and it also showed how beautiful love could be when East meets West.

This Griffin House Wedding Played Off The PNW’s Natural Beauty

From the scenic views and cozy misty vibes to the earthy color palette and whimsical florals—Abby and Abby’s Griffin House wedding details perfectly tied into their natural surroundings, making it an ultra-romantic and dreamy affair. The pair celebrated their big day with their closest loved ones in the most picturesque location. 

Set amongst a quintessential PNW backdrop, the ceremony lawn made for a breathtaking setting for their ceremony. Overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, the two exchange vows under a triangle arbor that mimicked the mountain peaks behind them. At the marquee reception, the guests dined and danced all night under glittering mirror balls, florals, and the golden glow of string lights.

How All The Details Of Their Griffin House Wedding Came Together

The vibe of our wedding came together throughout the planning process, but we knew we wanted to it to feel dreamy, romantic, enchanting, and elegant—unique to us. We knew that a destination wedding would make this occasion extra special and a fun vacation for our family. We looked online for about two weeks at venues across the country, but nothing spoke to us. And then Ab looked on Instagram and found The Griffin House in less than five minutes and nothing else even compared. The venue is absolutely stunning on its own, so we wanted to play off the natural elements around the property and feel authentic to the PNW. Our guest count also helped us make the vibe more romantic and intimate, as we could focus on ourselves and visit with our loved ones throughout the night. Ab and I have a special place in our hearts for discos, so we absolutely had to have disco balls in the reception tent. That got everyone out on the dance floor having a blast!

Making The Unpredictable Weather Work For Them

We had a few big surprises that day, and they made the moments truly magical. First was the rain, and although everyone would’ve expected us to panic, we were oddly calm and just enjoyed the weather. We do love the rain on normal days. PNW rain is more of a light mist, so since it wasn’t ceremony-ruining weather but we were prepared for it to go throughout the day. We had clear umbrellas for all our guests, which made for beautiful photos. The drizzle of the rain made it look extra dreamy and like it was straight out of a fairytale.

Proudly Showcasing Their Love And Baring Their Hearts To Each Other Through Their Vows

We’re most proud of how our vows turned out and how our love showed through to everyone. We could feel everyone looking at us with tears in their eyes and love in their hearts for us. It’s been a difficult road for two queer women growing up in the south, especially having the same name. But we persevered and got to be a representation of true love. We played rock, paper, scissors to decide who went first, which was another detail that made it unique to us (that’s how we always decide things). We both cried at our own and each other’s because we poured our hearts out to one another in front of everyone we love. Lastly, we proudly marked our love by combining our last names to make a new one together, her maiden name being Clark and mine being Nelson. We’re now the Clarksons.

Working With An Experienced Vendor Team To Bring To Life The Celebration They’ve Always Envisioned

We wanted the details to be special and mean something, and I think we were able to accomplish that. And working with the most amazing vendors brought everything to the next level. Our advice for couples who have just started their wedding planning journey is to keep your love at the center of everything you do during this process- and in life, for that matter! Jokes aside, it can be a stressful process if you take it too seriously and stress over details. Remember that the whole point is to just get married and be with your love. As long as you two leave as happily married, all went well.

Heartwarming Surprises That Made Their Griffin House Wedding Even More Special

The surprise came when I walked down the aisle, the rain stopped, and the sun came out. My mom and aunt had been praying to my Grandma all morning, asking her to be present at our ceremony from Heaven. Although I’m not religious, I felt in my heart that it was her giving us her blessing. Another surprise that we will truly never forget was from our DJ. Before our grand exit, our DJ Robby asked our guests to grab our twinkle light sticks and create a circle on the dance floor with us in the middle. He announced we would have one last special slow dance to Adele’s “Make You Feel My Love.” The song started as usual, and then we heard our voices reading our vows from the ceremony only hours before, line by line, over the instrumental bits of the song. Everyone cried happy tears again, especially us, as we soaked in the last moments of our wedding.

Why A Grounds Of Alexandria Garden Wedding

We wanted an open garden setting with lots of fresh air. And we just love the food and the vibe of The Grounds of Alexandria. Plus, the venue already had lots of flowers and greenery, so we didn’t spend so much on decor.

Personalizing Their Ceremony By Incorporating Both Their Beliefs And Traditions

Our ceremony was a mix of cultures, religious beliefs and traditions. We found a chapel that would allow us to facilitate our ceremony with a celebrant. Since we didn’t want a religious wedding, we respected Mat’s family’s beliefs by getting married at The Coast Chapel.

Letting Go If Things Don’t Go As Planned

We were lucky that our families helped us with our wedding. But what made the planning easier for us was having a clear communication system and sticking to the budget. We didn’t leave things last minute, but we also knew that plans never run as intended, no matter how carefully we planned them.

Earthy And Natural DIY Tulum Micro Wedding

A luxe boutique resort in the heart of the jungle, DIY decor in a neutral color palette, and chic wedding attire—Imani and Karen’s Tulum micro wedding was a stunning affair in paradise. While planning a destination wedding in the middle of the pandemic might have been challenging, the pair pulled it off in style. By keeping their guest list small, they lucked out and found the perfect location for their spectacular multi-day celebration. 

With the distinct and intricate Moorish architecture and lush tropical gardens of the Ambre et Epices as their backdrop, the couple exchanged heartfelt vows in a private courtyard ceremony with only their photographers as a witness. For the intimate reception that followed, feathery centerpieces, gauzy linen, rattan chargers, and candles in gold and amber holders complemented the villa’s luxurious charm. 

In addition to the gorgeous aesthetic, the brides’ stylish attire stole the show. Imani’s gorgeous gown with a plunging lace bodice and dramatic train was the right touch of glam, while Karen’s stylish pantsuit brought a sophisticated flair to the occasion. Junebug Members Raw Shoots Captured The Emotions Of Their Big Day In The Most Natural Way

Raw Shoots is so aptly named because no matter what emotion my wife and I were experiencing at the moment, you see it unfiltered in the photos. They looked so effortless. So many photos made Karen and I say, “How did they get that angle? I didn’t even know they were there.” We weren’t posing or trying too hard. And because of that, I can look back on the photos and feel all those feelings again.

How Their Tulum Micro Wedding Came To Be

Our options for a destination wedding were limited as we got married during the pandemic, so we were lucky to find our venue. We were looking for somewhere to have our ceremony and reception, but we could also stay with our guests for a few days of extended celebration. We also searched high and low to find somewhere that photographed well. We’re fans of Moroccan architecture and were floored when we discovered Ambre et Epices on Airbnb.

The Emotional First Look Was Their Favorite Part Of The Day

We have so many favorite moments, but one of them has to be our first look. This was a moment that Raw Shoots helped us to plan that we didn’t even know we’d find so special. I remember standing in my wedding gown in the courtyard of our venue, turning around to see Karen, and thinking, wow, I’ve never seen anyone or anything more lovely in my life. As soon as she and I made eye contact, we couldn’t look away. We were giddy, giggly, and a bit teary-eyed, too, because it finally hit us that we were about to take this beautiful leap together.

A Private Vow Exchange Between Just The Two Of Them

Our guests arrived at the villa on the day of our vow exchange, but we decided we wanted a private ceremony before guests arrived. Our photographers were the only people who witnessed our vows, and this privacy let us be fully in the moment with each other. When Karen and I heard each other’s vows, it was for the first time–we didn’t rehearse–so the emotions that came up were beautifully authentic. We both shed quite a few happy tears–props to Prep Tulum for our flawless makeup, which did not budge. Hilariously, Karen and I planned our vows but didn’t plan any words for exchanging our rings. So when it came to that point, we both just laughed and slid those babies on each other’s fingers.

DIY Decor And A Muted Color Palette To Match The Moroccan-Inspired Venue 

My wife and I opted for a DIY micro wedding, and we had fun planning the entire thing together down to the last detail. We wanted something effortless yet refined. We chose to decorate minimally, leaning into the venue’s stunning Moroccan-inspired architecture and the surrounding natural beauty of Tulum. We gave our guests a suggested dress code of dusty pastels and neutrals and embellished the rustic outdoor dining table with the same muted botanical color palette. We had a very intimate guest list, so we wanted the vibe to reflect that intimacy. Every person had been hand chosen to spend this day with us, so we wanted it to feel luxurious.  At the same time, it was important that everyone felt at home, so we kept things simple and not over-produced.

Their Small Guest List Allowed Them To Spend More Quality Time With Everyone

We kept our guest list under ten people to minimize the risk of COVID and keep us from feeling like we constantly had to be “on” for our guests. So, once it came time for the big day, we felt a great deal of peace. Our family members and friends came from different states and countries, and many met each other for the first time. Our guests bonded miraculously quickly, underscoring what a strong union Karen and I have created with one another.

Stunning Neutral-Toned Wedding With Amazing Energy

From the very start of their wedding planning journey, Sherilyn and Justin wanted to break away from the norm by incorporating personal and unexpected touches. Little did they know that a global pandemic would push their dream celebrations back three years. But their celebration was definitely well worth the wait. From their warehouse-type venue and chic fashion to the ultra-fun vibe—their neutral-toned wedding was anything but cookie-cutter. 

With its floor-to-ceiling windows, white walls, and vaulted ceilings—JULEP was the perfect blank canvas for their sleek aesthetic. Their ceremony featured acrylic chairs, a petal-lined aisle, and statement florals strategically placed on geometric gold stands against a white backdrop. The same set was repurposed for the sweetheart table as the space was flipped to a modern ethereal reception. They turned up the romance with tablescapes of pillar candles in glass cylinders and towering centerpieces created by AHR Florals.

Just when you think that the stunning aesthetic and the amazing energy are unmatched, the couple’s runway-level fashion stands out. The pair changed into a second look for an all-night dance party. The groom donned a gray ombre barong while the bride looked glam in an oversized beaded jacket and sparkly mesh pants. From the theatrical entrances to the fun dance routines—Junebug member Ash Gabes Photography beautifully captured the energy and excitement of their special day.

Sherilyn and Justin are some of the most fun and lively duo I’ve ever worked with—it’s the Bondoc energy for me! The couple and their friends literally would not stop dancing all day. The beautiful community of family and friends that cheered them on really made their hype train go. Their friend was the “Hype Man” for their wedding, which created a lot of funny moments for their grand entrance. The Maid of Honor came in on a unicycle. Again, a very high-energy group. They were great to work with, and not to include any dancing pictures would take away from the entire vibe of the day.

A First Look Three Years In The Making

The most memorable part of the day was seeing each other for the first time at the aisle. After putting our wedding off for almost three years, there’s nothing we looked forward to more than our first look.

Advice From The Couple: Don’t Pressure On Yourself To Have The Perfect Wedding Day

Nobody talks about this enough, but don’t pressure yourself to make your wedding the “best day ever”. Your wedding is only one day out of the thousands you’ll spend together. As a couple, we aren’t super into extravagance or PDA, so our tiny moments outside of the wedding—like going to Target on Sundays and getting our favorite Thai food on a random weeknight—are much more valuable than a single day. We had a blast regardless, but when you’re the one who planned the wedding, it’s hard not to pay attention to the tiny details, like the itinerary being off by ten minutes. Set expectations with yourself, and don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

DIY Signage To Cut Costs

We DIY’d our signage. I used Canva to design the posters, and we used the online Staples Printing Center to get our posters printed. It saved us so much more money than buying something through Etsy. Plus it made things more personal.

There’s a common misconception that weddings have to be bright, neutral, or packed with tradition. Newsflash, that’s not the case. We’re seeing more and more couples go against the grain, breaking those outdated wedding planning expectations–and it all starts with hiring your vendors, picking a color palette, and creating a mood board. 

While neutral weddings will always be a timeless aesthetic, it’s not for everyone. And if you’re looking for ways to make a statement, a bold color palette is the way to go.
