What to Know Before Hiring A Wedding Videographer

November 27, 2022 | kailey

While planning your big day, you probably hear a lot about the importance of hiring a trusted team of wedding vendors. From wedding planners to photographers, there are a lot of people you’ll want to have by your side. But there’s one more key player you shouldn’t skip out on—a wedding videographer

Videography is an investment that we think is worth it if you have room in your budget. After all is said and done, your wedding photos and film are what you have to remember your day by, which is why narrowing down your choices of videographers can be overwhelming. That’s where we come in. Whether you’re 100% sold on hiring a videographer for your wedding or still need a little convincing, here’s everything you need to know while you look around.

Why Should You Be Hiring A Videographer?

Your wedding film brings your special day back to life with just a press of a button. Hit play and you get to relive all those sweet memories over and over again. Sure, wedding photography has a similar ring to it, but having a video to accompany your photos will give you the full experience to look back on. And you can guarantee that between your photographer and videographer, you won’t miss a single moment.

Wedding Videography Costs And Package Options

Like with any other wedding vendor, videographers typically have a variety of different offerings to help create the perfect package for you. Packages allow couples to hand-select services that align with your expectations and budget

Here are some of the most popular package options you’re likely to see when hiring a videographer:

Trailer/Teaser Film (1-2 min)

Have you ever watched a movie trailer? This is the same concept, but for your wedding day. Often accompanied later by a short film, this trailer—or teaser film—is created by your videographer while they continue to edit and craft the final product. Some videographers include a teaser video as a part of their package, while others offer it as an add-on.

Highlight Film (3-10 min)

With many videographers, the highlight film is the final product you will receive. Being one of the most common package choices, this film is non-linear (not necessarily in chronological order) and takes a more modern approach. It’s a three to ten-minute cinematic compilation of the most memorable moments.

Short Film (10-20 min)

If you decide on a package with a short film, you’ll receive an edited version of your wedding footage that takes a more linear form (in chronological order). This style typically includes a portion of your vows, reception toasts, etc. Depending on how long you book your videographer for, the film may also include getting ready footage, first look footage, and your grand exit.

Same Day Edit (4-10 min)

Some videographers offer an option to have footage from your wedding edited on the spot and shown during your reception. Though this offering is more difficult to hunt down, it can be a fun surprise for guests on the day of.

Videography by Vic Rivero Films.

Full-length documentary (30-90 min)

If you are interested in reliving the majority of your big day, this option is for you! Your videographer can create a longer film that includes entire sections of your wedding, like your ceremony. Due to the length, this option is the most like an actual movie of your wedding.

Add-On Options

Most videographers offer à la carte options to receive additional footage from your day. A few popular add-ons include:

  • Full ceremony/reception: edited footage of your wedding ceremony or toasts/speeches during your reception
  • Raw footage: unedited footage from your wedding day
  • Drone aerial coverage
  • Rehearsal dinner coverage
  • Greetings from guests during cocktail hour
  • Trailer film (mentioned above, as an add-on)
  • Love story: similar to an engagement session, this footage is filmed before your wedding day, usually in plain clothes, which may include an interview with you as a couple as well as a lifestyle shoot

Wedding Videographer Styles

While each videographer puts their own artistic touch on their work, there are a few styles by which most videographers can be categorized. These are the most common styles to look for in your search:

Cinematic

Cinematic is the most popular style of videographer you’ll find. These films are most like real movies, edited and stylized like cinematic pieces of art—hence the name. There are two main styles within cinematic videography: Modern Abstract and Classic.

Modern abstract style is characterized by a non-linear approach. These films are created to make the viewer feel something, both in how the footage is arranged and the music used. The footage used in a modern abstract film is more likely to include atmospheric footage, or B-roll, which helps capture the overall mood of the day. Modern abstract films typically use little or no speaking from the day.

While modern abstract films are almost entirely non-linear, classic cinematic films may provide a stylistic edit of events from the day in between bits of B-roll. While you still feel a sense of the wedding atmosphere, your video will include more intact footage or sound bites of events.

Video Journalistic / Documentary

A video journalistic approach is meant to capture the day as it occurred. This means that your film will include footage of some of your day’s biggest moments while also highlighting the other happenings of the day—getting ready, guests interacting before the ceremony, messages from guests, dancing at the reception, etc.

Storytelling

A storytelling style relies on sound bites—from the day and recorded at another time—to tell the story of your big day. While music is used to create an emotional reaction in other film types, storytelling uses sound bites for dramatic effect.

Super 8 Film

It comes as no surprise that Super 8 film has taken the wedding world by storm. It gives your film a vintage flair, making it a unique way to set your film apart. Some videographers may use this film to document the entire day or will blend it with modern recording technology for a truly personalized effect.

Questions To Ask Before Hiring A Videographer

  1. Do you have open availability on our wedding day?
  2. How would you describe your videography style?
  3. What packages do you offer?
  4. How many hours of coverage are included in each package?
  5. Will you be scheduling another wedding for the same day?
  6. What does your cancellation (or rescheduling) process look like?
  7. Do you require a deposit? If so, how much?
  8. What is your turnaround time?
  9. How will the film and footage be delivered?
  10. Are you open to editing feedback?

You’re now equipt with all the knowledge needed for hiring a videographer that matches your desired style, video length, and budget. It’s officially time to start your wedding vendor search. And lucky for you, you’re just one click away from some of the top wedding vendors—including videographers—from around the world.

Whimsical Garden Portland Backyard Wedding

November 25, 2022 | justine

When your childhood home has manicured gardens and lush landscaping, you don’t have to look very far for the perfect wedding venue. This was true for Dominique and Patrick when they chose to host their big day at their family’s picturesque property in Oregon. And with the combined efforts of all their loved ones, they pulled off a whimsical Portland backyard wedding using a warm color palette, vintage decor, and dreamy florals

Surrounded by gorgeous flowers and greenery, the natural beauty of the existing gardenscape provided a stunning ceremony backdrop. Flipping the same space into the perfect reception area, they incorporated an elegant tablescape adorned with vintage accents, low arrangements of garden blooms, and taper candles. The pair elevated the dreamy atmosphere by adding string lights above the alfresco setting.

On top of the enchanting aesthetic, the couple tied everything together with their attire. The bride glowed in a romantic tiered off-the-shoulder floral gown. Meanwhile, the groom brought a modern western touch to the occasion with his brown suit with a bolo tie.

Packed with fairytale charm and personal touches, you need to see all the stunning details captured by Carmelisse Photography. Scroll down to know exactly what we’re talking about.

How Their Portland Backyard Wedding Came To Be

We had the perfect venue, Patrick’s childhood home in Portland, which had the most charming backyard for the occasion. We wanted a whimsical but elegant garden wedding with a terracotta color palette with touches of gold. We were lucky that Patrick’s parents’ home is naturally so beautiful with its landscaping and flowers, so we just tried to play off that. In addition to the lush greenery, there were incredible sculptures throughout the backyard and used them to mark the altar. Once the ceremony was over, we had everyone move to the upper section of the backyard for the cocktail hour among the beautiful hydrangeas, which made for a naturally beautiful backdrop. We flipped the same space for the reception to have all the tables. On each table, we included a terracotta runner, floral centerpiece, gold candlesticks, and funky vintage frames with the table number that we had thrifted weeks leading up to the wedding. And lastly, I can’t forget that the entire space was under fairy lights that our wedding party helped us hang up the day before. Truly a team effort.

They Had A Sing-Along Surprise During Their Ceremony

Our ceremony perfectly balanced sentimentality and humor, and we felt deeply connected to each other and our community. Whenever I feel ungrateful or frustrated, I think back to our ceremony and know that we’re incredibly fortunate and must be on the right path. At the end of our ceremony, we surprised the guests by singing “Always Be My Baby” by Mariah Carey. Lyrics to the chorus were placed on everyone’s seats, but they didn’t anticipate that I had a karaoke mic with a built-in speaker, and the entire wedding party sang along as we processed down the aisle. It was truly a party once everyone caught on and started to sing along as well.

Advice From The Newlyweds

My number one wedding pet peeve is the combination of low volume and bad mic technique. Making the ceremony inaudible is so frustrating but common so it’s important to ensure that the microphones are loud enough. And our second piece of advice is to remove traditional elements that don’t speak to who you are as a couple and only keep the heartfelt ones. The shorter and more emotionally resonant, the better it is when it comes to the ceremony and the wedding as a whole. Lastly, don’t be afraid to be truly vulnerable and speak from the heart in your vows.

Serving Their Favorite Food And Dessert

The food felt very special and specific to us. Our Filipino caterer, Tambayan, served up some classic dishes. Taqueria Los Puñales, our taco vendor, also made fresh tortillas on the spot. We were adamant about having ice cream since that is our favorite dessert, so we had to have a local ice cream truck, The Mobile Scoop.

They Added A Personal Touch By Singing Along To Their First Dance Song

I loved every part of the dance floor, including our first dance and song. We decided to add our own spin on it and sang Adele’s “Make You Feel My Love” accompanied by our good friend Grant on the piano. It then led into Evelyn “Champagne” King’s “Love Come Down,” played by our incredible DJ Jess The Ripper.

They Successfully Pulled Off A Memorable Portland Backyard Wedding With Help From Their  Loved Ones

I am proud of the DIY aspects and how we pull them off with the help of our family, friends, and wedding party. Everyone pitched in, whether it was setting up tables, chairs, and twinkle lights to squeezing hundreds of limes for our specialty margarita cocktail. It was a team effort, and we felt all those personal touches throughout the day.

Enchanted Forest Lundy Farm Wedding

November 22, 2022 | justine

Looking forward to life after lockdown, Joanna and Chris decided to create a wedding weekend experience unlike any other, spent with their closest loved ones. And with the help of Junebug members Luna & Charlie Events, that’s precisely what they did. With the estate’s natural beauty as the perfect backdrop and–more importantly–great food as the highlight, the couple brought a Lundy Farm wedding filled with stunning details and thoughtful touches to life.

In the middle of the cedar forest, the couple said their “I dos” with a dreamy asymmetrical open arch framing the sweet moment.  After their woodland ceremony, the pair being self-proclaimed foodies (they even referenced this in their vows), they decided that a nine-course dinner reception would be the best way to express their love of food. On top of the incredible culinary experience, they dined on long family-style tables filled with lush low arrangements and candles set beneath a canopy of fairy lights.

The intimate and well-thought-out details combined with the picturesque landscape truly elevated and brought this wedding together. If you and your partner have dreamed of a nature, family, and food-focused celebration, this is the perfect inspo for you. Advice From The Newlyweds On Creating An Intentional And Authentic Wedding Experience

Chris and I left our wedding weekend with a similar feeling. We were so proud of ourselves for not sticking to the typical wedding traditions and genuinely being authentic to ourselves. Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is to trust the process, trust yourself, and do what truly reflects your personality and love story.

How Their Lundy Farm Wedding Came To Be

At the beginning of our wedding planning process, Chris and I had a mood board full of ideas with zero ideas of how they would actually come to life. The overall vibe we hoped for was an enchanted dreamland full of intentional details true to our love story. Along came Luna and Charlie, who made our dreams come true. Our main focus was to create an intimate and intentional experience for our guests. We knew that the venue would be critical in achieving that goal. It all came together when we visited Lundy Farm. The property was stunning and was perfect for a wedding weekend unlike any of our guests have ever experienced. The landscape’s natural beauty influenced everything from florals to the stationery. We trusted the process and leaned into the feeling we had at Lundy Farm and how we wanted our guests to experience it.

Bringing Loved Ones Closer Together With Bonding Activities At Their Lundy Farm Wedding Weekend

Our wedding was more than just a celebration of our marriage but was also the first time our families had met. Creating moments for the two families to connect and bond throughout the weekend was the true highlight of our lives. But we also wanted them to choose their own adventure as the property was selected based on the opportunities to explore. To welcome our families, we had a movie night beneath the stars with popcorn and candy (watching “Princess Bride,” of course). We also had a “Hug and Hike” at the local goat sanctuary. Our guests also had the option to use the yoga studio and sauna or do outdoor activities like biking, hiking, trekking, or swimming. To round out the weekend, we had s’mores by the fire pit.

Personalizing Their Lundy Farm Wedding Ceremony

The spot we chose on the property has never been used for a ceremony before, so we were immediately excited to utilize the space in a new way. Our ceremony took place in the middle of the cedar forest, and guests were shuttled in by a golf cart. Being the non-traditional couple we are and our desire to create a unique and intentional weekend, we had a dear friend of ours officiate, and our nephew was our flower boy (and stole the show). My processional song was the soundtrack to my favorite video game, and we recessed to Park Rock Anthem. Making these decisions for our ceremony was so much fun and felt authentic to us, which is exactly what we wanted.

Setting The Tone With Their DIY Stationery and Welcome Bags

We created an invitation suite to set the tone for our wedding weekend. It was an acrylic card in a forest green box layered with hand-marbled paper. We carried that design throughout our wedding stationery and created welcome bags for each guest. These were placed in each guest’s room, so they were greeted with them upon arrival. I am most proud of this because this was something Chris and I put together ourselves. It was important to have our hands on some of these projects, especially because gift-giving is our love language, and we knew our guests would appreciate it.

Having A Private Chef To Accommodate Their Guests’ Dietary Preferences Throughout The Weekend

Once we had decided on the meals for the main celebrations, we wanted to go a bit further to push the “family reunion” feel. We brought in a private chef to cook breakfast and lunch for our guests throughout the weekend. It was always set up family style with special items to accommodate everyone’s dietary preferences. This was such a special touch that everyone truly appreciated.

Treating Their Guests With A Thoughtful Wedding Weekend Dining Experience

Food is always at the center of celebrations for the two of us, so we just knew that we had to design an edible journey for our guests throughout the weekend. When guests arrived, we kicked off the weekend with a barbecue movie night for comfort food. We knew that a traditional three-course dinner would not suffice, so our incredible catering team, Pinch Food Design, created a nine-course tasting dinner that was truly perfection. Chris and I vividly remember sitting at our table, surrounded by our families, and watching them receive each course and be blown away each time. They asked questions, took pictures, and some even asked for seconds of certain courses. We finished this food journey with an authentic Mediterranean lamb roast.
