9 Mother Of The Groom Outfits We Love

August 16, 2022 | riley

The mother of the groom is a wedding role filled with emotions. These feelings often range from excitement to overwhelming love, to absolute dread—your son is grown up and getting married. First and foremost, congratulations!

Photos of this beautiful day will last well after the food has gone cold and the champagne stops flowing. Choosing the perfect mother of the groom outfit will ensure you look and feel your best on your son’s wedding day.

What Should The Mother Of The Groom Wear?

Thankfully, the standards of what the mother of the groom should wear are becoming more reasonable. Where you’d once expect to be wearing a very matronly ensemble, that’s no longer the case. These outfits don’t need to feel frumpy and conservative. The old advice that the mothers should avoid matching or carefully coordinate with the bride no longer applies—this is especially helpful in the case of a brideless wedding.

Nowadays, the mother of the groom should pick out an outfit that compliments the couple’s wedding attire. Whether there will be colorful suits with intricate beadwork, a no-frills tuxedo, or delicate lace, the mother of the groom should wear something comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. For example, if the couple is getting creative with their own wedding attire and hosting a laid-back backyard wedding, it would look out of place for the mother of the groom to be in a full ballgown. Whereas an upscale wedding will require a formal pantsuit or gown.

How To Choose A Coordinated Mother Of The Groom Outfit

The best way to ensure that the outfit matches the occasion is to communicate and respect the wedding timeline. Once the couple has created their wedding mood board and knows what their outfits will be, ask them for their preferences on the color that you wear and send them some options you’d feel comfortable and fabulous in.

Our Favorite Mother Of The Groom Outfits

Looking for inspiration on that perfect outfit? Look no further, we’ve curated our favorite mother of the groom outfits below. Whether you want to rock a full-length gown, a pantsuit, or something sparkly and fashion-forward, you’ll find what you’re looking for in this list.

1. AW Bridal Lynn Dress

2. Azazie Olivia MBD

3. Tadashi Shoji Odette Sequin Dress

4. Azazie Belladonna MBD

5. Alex Evenings Tea Length Sequin Gown

7. Kiyonna Wildflower Embroidered A-Line Dress

At Junebug, we’re here to make wedding planning approachable for all couples and—in this instance—their families. While navigating important tasks like choosing an unforgettable mother-son dance song, selecting your outfit should also be at the top of the to-do list.

Ditch Your Traditional Tie

Add A Boutonniere

Just like a bouquet, the groom’s boutonniere is a great way to tie together the wedding theme—especially for fall weddings. By using warm florals that match the color palette, dried fall materials, and feathers, something as simple as the boutonniere takes your wardrobe to the next level.

Spice Up Your Footwear with Boots And Socks

An often underutilized wedding day accessory is the groom’s footwear. The color, style, and brand of shoe all pay homage to the groom’s attire. For fall weddings, try ditching the classic Oxford shoe for a pair of boots! This is the perfect way to add an adventurous and warm touch to your wedding day outfit.

Add Earrings and Ear Cuffs

Jewelry is a subtle addition that can dress up any outfit. For stylish grooms, we’re all for incorporating your personality into your look by adding earrings or ear cuffs.

This Colorful Kona Wedding Will Blow You Away with Its Monochrome Bride & Groom Looks and Vibrant Details

Yoon and Aki’s Kona wedding was as emotional as it was colorful! The creative duo DIY-ed nearly every detail of their special day, including an impressive array of florals that included every tropical flower imaginable. Their outdoor ceremony and reception highlighted the beauty of the island and their personal styles highlighted their vibrant personalities and their cultures. The blue they both wore for the ceremony looked stunning against the rainbow of florals and landscaping, and the yellow outfits they changed into for the reception and sunset portraits could not have been more perfect! Photographer Melia Lucida didn’t miss a beat in capturing this truly remarkable Hawaiian wedding!

The Couple:

Yoon and Aki

The Wedding:

Kona Beach Houses, Kona, Hawaii

It was very important for us to represent our diverse cultural backgrounds and unique approach to style in the way we designed our wedding. 100 of our close family and friends flew in from all over the world – LA, New York, London, Seoul, Freetown, Melbourne – that’s massive for a destination wedding so it was important for us to put in our best effort and have a good time! We wanted to create a rich sensory experience – festive and soulful – full of loving energy, stunning decor, good tunes, and our favorite local food.

As a fashion stylist and photographer duo from New York, we had a strong sense of what we wanted for our style and design, thus, all of the decor was DIY. As for photography, we were so nervous about it being cheesy that we almost just opted out of it completely. But then I found a few good recommendations — via Junebug actually — and that’s how we found Melia Lucida! Best decision ever! Good music was also a huge priority. Luckily, our two good friends are our favorite NY DJs! So they played all our favorite tunes, including that good Afrobeat and dancehall reggae.

The wedding took place at a private residence; therefore, we had to book and coordinate all our needs for the wedding. Aside from rentals and catering, pretty much everything was DIY, including the flowers! I had an army of family and friends help me ship loads of supplies from NYC, forage, spray paint, and glitter glue. You name it, we did it! My family handmade the special leis we all wore, including the beautiful strand of crown flowers that I had roped around my hand. My sister Gina also picked the red flower from the Coral Tree for Aki’s lei because it was a flower he remembered from his childhood in Sierra Leone.

Our best advice is to take pre-marital counseling. Also, hire a great wedding day coordinator and communicate details with them thoroughly — including your biggest hopes and expectations. That way, you can be hands-off and present at the wedding. Delegate your expectations for friends and family thoroughly before the wedding. That way people are prepared and not overwhelmed – esp if it’s a destination wedding. They mostly expect to be on vacation but if you need help, they’ll most likely want to help but just need to know in advance.

This Wine-Loving Bride and Groom Married in a Rosé Inspired Rose Gold Malibu Vineyard Wedding at Cielo Farms

June 24, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

When you love wine as much as Lauren and Justin do, it’s only natural to have your wedding at a vineyard like Cielo Farms! The venue, which is nestled in the mountains of Malibu, is gorgeous on its own, but the addition of rose gold accents, vintage decor, and muted florals from Best Day Ever Floral Design only made it more breath-taking and expressed the couple’s personalities. We love that the bride went with a vintage-inspired Bo and Luca gown and beaded headpiece and that the groom took a more modern, laid-back approach in his style. Everything about this wedding felt effortless and authentic, and both Wanderlust Creatives and Klassey Productions did a brilliant job documenting it all!

The Couple:

Lauren and Justin

The Wedding:

Cielo Farms, Malibu, California

Location and vibe were key. We wanted our wedding to feel unique and truthful to us. It was so important for us to walk away from our wedding feeling like it was special and everyone had an amazing time. We also wanted people to specifically feel that yes- that day was so Justin and Lauren and no one else could have recreated it in that way. That to me is what makes it so special and important because then it is truly a day that reflects the two people getting married.

I walked down the aisle to “All Eye’s on You” by St. LuciaJustin picked it specifically, which felt so special to me.

Neither of us is particularly religious, so this felt like the perfect opportunity to really make the day feel personal to us. One of my bridesmaid’s husbands, who is also such a good friend of ours, officiated our wedding. He did such a fantastic job and it made us feel so grateful that he agreed to do it! To be honest, it’s such a great thing to ask of a friend because I know he was so honored that we even thought of him. It really has brought us even closer together as friends knowing we will always share that day in that way!

We both wanted to get married outside, so weather and location were key. We also loved the idea of getting married at a vineyard because we both love wine! With me being from Los Angeles and Justin being from New York and us both living in Brooklyn, we would always spend roughly two weeks at my house in LA over the Christmas holidays. We don’t make it to LA too often, so it’s a good time for us to catch up with family. One year, we decided to go wine tasting in Malibu, and it was one of the best days we ever had! We knew we should definitely do Malibu as our wedding destination. When it came to looking at venues, we only looked at three. We just knew that Cielo Farms, a small vineyard tucked away in the Malibu hills, was perfect for us!

I knew I wanted long sleeves, as it would best fit my silhouette. I only went to two bridal salons and maybe tried on 9 dresses in total, and immediately knew this was the dress. It has hand beaded/sewn detail all over with a sheer high neck in the front and an open back. It also had a slimline on the bottom half, so it didn’t feel too “poufy.” To me, it was the perfect mix of understated sexy. In fact, a lot of people asked me if it was vintage, which I thought was so cool because I think it means the dress is truly timeless. If I have a daughter one day, I’d love to keep it around as an option for her to wear. That would be so epic!

Justin and I rented a vintage 1964 light blue Ford Thunderbird to arrive in. It was great for pictures and our wedding video. The car was seriously so cool! However, it was pretty low to the ground and, as we were being filmed to get into the car and drive to our venue for the day, Justin ripped his pants….right along the crotch! We all just paused and didn’t know what to do. My bridesmaid’s mom was able to sew them up, but she told him “no sudden movements. These might last you for the ceremony and that’s it.” It was so funny watching him get into the car the second time, trying to barely move his body! And, funnily enough, the pants stayed together all night! We brought a backup pair and sneakers just in case. I also told everyone, if he were to change, it would be one of the few weddings in history where the groom does an outfit change and the bride doesn’t!

I can’t stress how important it is that the day is about both of you and not just the bride. I would personally suggest making sure both of you are equally involved in the planning process. That way the day feels like it represents both of you, plus the stress of planning isn’t just sitting on one person’s shoulders.

We did our first dance to “No Hard Feelings” by The Avett Brothers because it is mine and Justin‘s favorite song and one of our favorite bands of all time. Every time we listen to the song we just get all the feels. It’s so emotionally beautiful.

With No Bride, These Stylish Grooms Invited Their Guests to Wear White to Their Four Seasons Resort Orlando Wedding

May 15, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Inspired by the all-white party in the movie White Chicks — yes, you read that correctly — Nick and Grant’s all-white Four Seasons Resort Orlando wedding was visually stunning! Pixies & Petals helped bring the couple’s vision to life, using all-white florals and linens alongside accents of greenery and natural textures, to create a look that was simultaneously elegant and understated. The grooms both wore navy blue suits from Suit Supply, which looked striking against their guests’ all-white attire. And, in keeping with the non-traditional feel of the day, they even included their fur babies in the ceremony! We can’t say enough about this beautiful wedding and these fantastic photos captured by Matthew Schueller Photography!

The Couple:

Nick and Grant

The Wedding:

Four Seasons Resort Orlando, Florida

What was most important when planning our wedding was keeping the ceremony and reception space as simple as possible. The venue itself is so beautiful that we didn’t want to overdo it. For us, we wanted our wedding to embody the idea of less is more. We wanted our guests to feel like they were in a fairytale, and we think we did just that.

With our wedding already being non-traditional in every way, we were able to personalize our wedding to fit exactly what we wanted. We had our father walk each of our two dogs down the aisle while we each separately walked down the aisle with our mothers. This allowed us to involve every family member — even the ones with paws and a tail! We also had Grant‘s 19-year-old sister officiate the wedding, with our wedding being the first she had ever attended. She was amazing!

Getting married to the love of your life is not about all the money you’ve spent or the plans that you made. It is about creating an unbreakable bond that will last a lifetime in front of the people you love. Remember that your special day is about that person you chose to walk down the aisle with. Whether you have to swim through a river of rain or skip through the sunshine, remember to control what you can control and everything will be just fine.

The most memorable part of the day was when we sat down for dinner. That was our first opportunity to take a step back and appreciate all of our hard work and time spent planning our big day. As we sat there, we couldn’t help but smile and giggle at one another as we witnessed something so incredibly special, it makes us happy just thinking about it. We overlooked a beautiful terrace filled with love, laughter, and most importantly family. Our smaller separate families magically turned into one big family and upon that realization, we knew that our 5 years of ups and downs, twists and turns were all worth it in the end!

This Folksy Windy Ridge Washington Wedding Incorporated the Groom’s Finnish Culture in Beautiful Ways

March 16, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Millie and Zacharias’ outdoor Windy Ridge Washington wedding was as intimate and charming as could be! The couple used rustic and vintage decor, earthy florals, and a neutral color palette to set the mood, and added nods to the groom’s Swedish-speaking Finnish roots in the signage, favors, and during the ceremony. The wide-open feel of the venue, the bride’s timeless Pronovias gown, and the eclectic mix of decor gave this wedding a distinctly folksy vibe that Dawn Photo captured brilliantly. As soon as you set eyes on these gorgeous photos and sneak peek film by Trousseau Films, we’re confident you’ll agree this Washington wedding is the definition of summer wedding goals!

The Couple:

Millie and Zacharias

The Wedding:

Windy Ridge, Washington

Every detail in the planning was very important to me but the most important was that we would find a good photographer to capture all of the best moments of our special day, and we did. We love our photos!

My husband and his family are from a Swedish speaking area in Finland. So during the ceremony, my father-in-law said a prayer and a short personal message in Swedish. It meant a lot to us and to him that he could do that.

This Magical Race and Religious Wedding Began with the Sweetest Surprise Gift from the Bride to the Groom

February 12, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

When Madeline and Sam’s Race & Religious wedding made us cry even before we reached the ceremony photos, we knew this was going to be a wedding we’d never forget! Honoring the fact that Sam had sold all his guitars to move from New Zealand to the United States to start their life together, Madeline surprised him with a new one during their “first look” — and Cody & Allison Photography were right there to capture every ounce of emotion. After all the happy tears, it was off to Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church to say, “I do,” and then party New Orleans style at the iconic Race & Religious venue! The bride’s talented sister/MOH, who works for Mint Julep Productions, helped the couple bring relaxed elegance and a chic, vintage feel to their courtyard reception. The result was nothing short of magical and perfectly suited to the fun-loving and heartwarming vibes of this extra special day!

The Couple:

Madeline and Sam

The Wedding:

Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church and Race & Religious, New Orleans, Louisiana

We both wanted our wedding day to be as unique, special, and loving as our relationship is. Sam and I met while teaching abroad in Taiwan. He is from New Zealand, and I’m from New Orleans. We wanted our wedding to be a beautiful blend of our cultures and traditions. It was very important to us that our big day was both relaxing and incredibly fun.

I surprised Sam with a new guitar! We met before the ceremony to exchange handwritten letters to each other. At the end of my letter to Sam, it instructed him to look under the bed, where the new guitar was hiding. When Sam moved to America from New Zealand, he had to sell all of his guitars and worldly possessions to be able to move and start our new life together in New Orleans. Music is very important to Sam, so it was important for me to be able to show him my appreciation for all of his sacrifices for our relationship. I love listening to Sam play and sing, so it was a gift for me, too!

Our best piece of advice would be to not sweat the small stuff. Focus on a few things that are the most important to you, and everything else will fall into place. Guests don’t usually remember the little details, but they will remember the overall feel of your wedding and if they had a good time.

Cody & Allison Photography are incredible, and having them there to document our wedding day was so special because it felt like we were hanging out with old friends. They made us feel so comfortable, and we have such a genuine connection to them. They are so easy and fun to be around and blended into the day so perfectly. The pictures they produced are everything we could have asked for and more!

I was lucky enough that my sister and maid of honor, Meredith, works for the best wedding planning business in New Orleans, Mint Julep Productions. She has incredible style and taste, and such an eye for design, it was easy to trust her with all the details of our big day!
