Colorful Surprise Backyard Wedding

September 17, 2022 | justine

Meg and Vinee love to do things differently. And when it came to planning their wedding, ditching tradition and putting their own spin on things came naturally. To kick off their wedding day in a creative way, the pair invited their closest loved ones to a “surprise proposal party.” Only when their guests showed up, they found themselves at a surprise backyard wedding instead. It was an exciting and beautiful affair, and the couple pulled it off fabulously! Besides the surprise element, their big day featured a boho-chic aesthetic—from the stunning florals and decor in dreamy tones to the laid-back and ethereal wedding fashion.

The lovebirds kicked off their day with private emotional vows, sitting on their front porch and crying their eyes out. They then shared the same heartfelt promises at their poolside sunset ceremony that followed. Their talented vendors transformed their beloved friends’ backyard with elegant wood furnishings, Moroccan-style rugs, and spectacular arrangements of fresh blooms and dried foliage. Balloon installations were a fun touch, while the string lights and star lanterns amped up the romance.

On top of everything else, the couple kept the vibe carefree and chic with their wedding attire. The barefoot bride stunned in her bandeau top and skirt duo with statement sleeves.  Meanwhile, the groom was stylishly cool in his tan-colored suit. And true to form, they ended the day in an epic way by literally taking the plunge in their wedding garb. If Meg and Vinee’s surprise soiree sounds thrilling, scroll through these beautiful photographs captured by Junebug member J. Olson Weddings. This backyard wedding is packed with inspiration to pull off a memorable surprise celebration.

A Gifted Maple Tree To Grow With Their Marriage

I have an extreme propensity for trees, and spending time outdoors is a big way we connect. Vinee bought us a marriage maple tree to plant in our yard to grow and change in our continued seasons with us. I cried when he showed it to me. It felt so meaningful and perfect. We have big plans to plant a tree for each of our children, too. I had also gifted Vinee a travel journal to track our road trips in our first year of dating. I forgot about it, but Vinee kept it and continued to log every trip. He gave me this written history of our time together on our wedding day. I cried at that, too.

Getting Ready Together And Sharing Private Vows Were The Most Memorable Moments

We both make sense of things through words, and as I was writing my vows, it felt so inauthentic to read these to Vinee in front of everyone. So, we opted first to share our vows privately, sitting on our porch. This was my favorite part of the day. In true form, Vinee wrote the most beautiful and precise vows in a paragraph or two, and I went on for several pages. We both cried our eyes out. It’s exactly what we needed it to be, to first share those words with each other and then again later in the ceremony with the love and support of our people.

Personalizing Their Wedding With A Unique Unity Ceremony And Meaningful Wedding Favors

I love creating and giving gifts, so this was a fun one for me. We called these the “Bird by Bird” boxes, pointing to our favorite phrase by Anne Lamott and our unity ceremony that included the threading together of origami birds. At each place setting, our guests had a box with their own disposable camera to document the night, a bottle of our favorite hot sauce, a cocktail kit to create a “Hummingbird,” and a Spotify playlist Vinee created of songs significant to our relationship.

Proud Of Having Pulled Off A Surprise Backyard Wedding

We knew that it would be fun and meaningful no matter what, but pulling off the surprise itself was pretty incredible. We’re proud of ourselves for keeping each other centered and doing things our way. We picked up every piece of a traditional wedding, examined it, and asked ourselves if it was what we needed. We kept what served us and omitted what didn’t, creating a truly authentic day meant for us and no one else

Advice From The Newlyweds: Remember It’s Your Special Day

If you’re planning a wedding, remember that it’s your day and no one else’s. Figure out what’s important to you, start there, and make all decisions accordingly. For us, the priorities were the ceremony, the photos, the songs, the poems, and the small guest list. Lastly, time flies by so fast, so savor each moment

Greenery-Filled Grounds Of Alexandria Garden Wedding

September 16, 2022 | justine

Garden weddings are pure romance, especially when they come with the “secret garden” appeal. Imagine a lush garden venue hidden in the middle of the city, unique arrangements of fruit and blooms, and a floral tunnel filled with fairy lights. Packed with swoon-worthy details and personal touches, every detail of Nina and Mathew’s Grounds of Alexandria garden wedding is absolutely dreamy and a must-see!

Set at an iconic waterfront venue, their ceremony took place at The Coast Chapel, surrounded by their closest loved ones. Breathtaking ocean views through the stained glass windows were the perfect backdrop as the two pledged their love for each other. The celebration continued at the Grounds of Alexandria, where an enchanting garden reception awaited. Featuring cascading potted greenery above family-style tables with taper candles in antique holders, fresh fruit and delicate florals as centerpieces—they wined and dined in their own garden oasis.

The pair added modern flair to their dreamy affair with their stylish attire. The bride brought a chic edge to their big day by wearing crepe pants, a lace corset top with puff sleeves, and a billowing cape. Meanwhile, the groom kept it timeless with a classic tux. If your dream wedding includes lush foliage and spring florals, you need to see these gorgeous photos by Junebug member Olguin Photography. This is one inspiration-packed celebration you wouldn’t want to miss.

Why A Grounds Of Alexandria Garden Wedding

We wanted an open garden setting with lots of fresh air. And we just love the food and the vibe of The Grounds of Alexandria. Plus, the venue already had lots of flowers and greenery, so we didn’t spend so much on decor.

Personalizing Their Ceremony By Incorporating Both Their Beliefs And Traditions

Our ceremony was a mix of cultures, religious beliefs and traditions. We found a chapel that would allow us to facilitate our ceremony with a celebrant. Since we didn’t want a religious wedding, we respected Mat’s family’s beliefs by getting married at The Coast Chapel.

Letting Go If Things Don’t Go As Planned

We were lucky that our families helped us with our wedding. But what made the planning easier for us was having a clear communication system and sticking to the budget. We didn’t leave things last minute, but we also knew that plans never run as intended, no matter how carefully we planned them.

Working With Junebug Member Olguin Photography.

Olguin Photography was fantastic! He guided us through the day and made taking photos one of the best parts. A very professional photographer, Alex captured our special moments which was all that we really wanted.

How to Give Back on Your Wedding Day

New wedding trend alert: planning with a purpose. And this rings true for every step of the planning process. Your wedding day is all about celebrating love, and there are so many incredible ways to spread that love a little further. From volunteering with your “I do” crew to donating your leftover food and flowers, here are the top ways to give back on–and after–your big day.

Plan A Fully Sustainable Wedding

When planning your big day, it’s easy to get lost in the fun details. Many of us lose sight of the major effects our wedding purchases can have on the environment. Lucky for environmentally-cautious couples, many sustainable wedding brands have made it their goal to help couples plan eco-friendly celebrations. With a team of like-minded vendors and this guide to planning a sustainable wedding, it’s now easier than ever.

Volunteer With Your “I Do” Crew

While planning your bachelor or bachelorette parties, consider setting a few hours aside to volunteer with your “I do” crew. You don’t need to dedicate your whole trip to volunteering. But, no matter where you are in the world, there are local organizations that could benefit from just an hour or two of help. This is a great bonding experience and an even better way to give back during your engagement season

Ask Guests To Donate Instead Of Giving Gifts

Instead of having your guests bring physical gifts, ask them ahead of time to donate to the charity of your choice. When building your wedding website, on the ‘registry’ tab, you can add information about the charity and where to donate. This is not only a great way to give back, but it also takes the pressure off your guests—allowing them to donate whatever they’re comfortable with.

Support Loved One’s Small Businesses

When booking your vendors, start with the talented people in your life. Maybe your cousin owns a baking company, or your best friend is a florist. Use this as an opportunity to support small businesses and those close to you—a double win. Then beyond family and friends, you can outsource and build your dream vendor team

Donate Your Wedding Attire

After your big day, consider donating your wedding dress, jumpsuit, or suit. Rather than dedicating a portion of your budget to preserving your wedding gown, donate it to organizations that help create dreamy weddings for those in less fortunate situations. Bonus points if you can get your bridesmaids or groomsmen on board to donate their wedding day attire too.

Donate Leftover Food To Shelters

When the reception comes to a close, odds are there will be loads of extra food. It’s always better to have too much than not enough, right? Well, don’t let it go to waste. This is your chance to help local shelters by donating leftover food and desserts to those in need.

Donate Your Floral Arrangements

You’ve spent months deciding on a color palette and florals that’ll make for a dreamy installation. Instead of tossing your stunning floral arrangements into the bin, give them to local nursing homes. They’ve brought a smile to you and your guests–now it’s time to let them brighten up someone else’s day. There are many local nonprofits that’ll help you with the logistics, but you’re more than welcome to do your own research and contact nursing homes before your big day, too.

Gift Wedding Favors With A Purpose

There are no rules when it comes to wedding favors. You have complete creative freedom over how you thank your guests at the end of the night. And for those wanting to plan a wedding with purpose, there are a variety of wedding favor alternatives your guests will actually enjoy—favors that won’t go to waste.

If you want to plan a wedding that gives back, the first step is to assemble a team of vendors that are fully on board. Lucky for you, you’re just one click away from some of the top vendors around the world. But before reaching out, here’s everything you need to know about hiring your wedding vendors with as little stress as possible.
