As a wedding stationer, Dom knows that design is more than just pretty details. It’s the first impression. “The save-the-dates were neon chartreuse with cayenne pepper letterpress and a bold floral liner. We wanted people to feel the vibe immediately.”

The invitations kept things playful, asking guests to dress in “festive formal wear,” with a cheeky note: “Outdress the bride and groom.” That energy carried into the day-of details too. Everything from menus and signage to handwritten cards, was designed and crafted by the couple. Their table names were inspired by places they’ve traveled together, each holding a piece of their shared story.

 

Making the Guest List Count (And the Guest Count Small)

Limiting their guest list to 50 meant every invite was intentional. “It was one of the hardest parts,” Dom admitted. “But having only our closest friends and family there made everything more meaningful.”

They kicked things off with a welcome party at Chase’s childhood home, where his parents once hosted their own pre-wedding event. With tiki drinks, handmade tacos, their favorite coconut cake, and music by their friends, the night was full of nostalgia and love. It set the tone for a weekend rooted in memory, community, and joy.

Wedding Fashion That Reflected Their Personalities

Dom and Chase decided to keep things simple by skipping a wedding party and focusing on personal style, each wearing a different outfit for their first look and their ceremony.

Rather than jump straight into the ceremony, Dom and Chase made space for private vows at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Just the two of them, surrounded by art. Dom arrived in a vintage Rolls Royce, a meaningful nod to her late father’s love of classic cars.

A Simple, Sentimental Nontraditional Palm Springs Wedding Ceremony 

Their official ceremony took place in the intimate Cactarium at Moorten Botanical Garden. Surrounded by towering cacti, guests explored the space with champagne in hand before and after the vows.

“We wanted a venue that felt timeless and returnable. Moorten is a local gem. It’s historic, beautiful, and feels like home.”

They kept the decor simple—acrylic chairs and pedestals, sculptural florals, and calla lilies as a tribute to Chase’s mom. The couple co-wrote the ceremony script with Chase’s sister and included a group reading of “Scientific Romance” by Tim Pratt. “It was a little silly and very us. Exactly what we wanted.”

Trusting the Right People for Their Nontraditional Palm Springs Wedding

After the ceremony, the celebration moved to Mr. Lyon’s, where cocktails on the terrace led into a moody, textured dinner surrounded by vibrant floral arrangements and funky paper goods. “We put our energy into what mattered—good food, drinks, and a well-designed experience.”

The night ended with a silent disco back at the couple’s Airbnb. Just them and their closest friends dancing the night away.

The Parker’s iconic charm and a talented vendor team brought their vision to life. Jenna shared, “We knew that if we were going to ask our families to come all the way out to Palm Springs, it had to be special, and The Parker delivered exactly that.”

They focused on three key priorities during planning: amazing food and drinks, working with a great planner, and creating a beautiful design with the right atmosphere. These elements ensured their wedding felt true to who they are as a couple.

The ceremony took place beneath sprawling olive trees, with sunlight filtering through the branches. Guests sat on classic white chairs under scalloped patio umbrellas that added a Palm Springs touch. At the altar, a circular platform adorned with greenery and pastel blooms blended beautifully with the natural surroundings. “We wanted our guests to feel comfortable and immersed in the moment,” Jenna said. Thoughtful details, like hand fans displayed in a vintage champagne bucket, added to the guest experience and showed the couple’s attention to detail.

In a touching nod to family and legacy, Jenna also found a unique way to honor her late father, who had passed in 2022. Determined that he would still be part of her special day, Jenna and her maid of honor wrapped their bouquets in her father’s cherished bow tie and cummerbund—a subtle yet powerful reminder that his spirit would forever walk with them.

When Jenna walked down the aisle to Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed,” the mood shifted from exuberant celebration to heartfelt emotion. And as the newlyweds made their way into their future together, Willie Hutch’s “I Choose You” with its cinematic horn intro served as the perfect, soul-stirring send-off.

The reception, held in the courtyard, was illuminated by string lights. Long tables dressed in white linens featured gold accents, textured centerpieces, and glowing candles for a warm, inviting atmosphere.

“We wanted the reception to feel like a Palm Springs dinner party at our dream home.” Personal touches included antique brass bowls holding custom wedding matches, rust-colored fringe lamps flanking the bar, and a vinyl record display—all reflecting their unique style without the stress of DIY.

The after-party, the couple’s most memorable part of the celebration, turned The Parker’s ballroom into a disco wonderland. Designed by Luna Design Studio, the space featured silver mylar balloons, shimmering tinsel, and disco balls. DJ Chris Paul kept the energy alive with music and videos, while late-night snacks and cocktails kept guests fueled for the dance floor.

“Jessica and her team from Beeloved Events went above and beyond. They made sure everything ran smoothly and took such good care of us.” A standout memory was when their planner gave them a private tour of the glowing reception space before guests arrived—a moment Jenna and Michael will always treasure.

Jenna and Michael found that having a clear vision and working with the right vendors made all the difference. Early conversations with potential vendors helped them find trusted recommendations, as the same names kept coming up.  Social media also gave them insight into each vendor’s style, making it easier to choose those who aligned with their vision. They do more than just announce the date and time—they set the tone for your entire celebration! Whether you’re going for something classic, modern, or completely unique, the right wedding invitation wording makes all the difference. This guide walks you through the must-have details and gives you plenty of examples for inspiration.

Wedding Invitation Wording Breakdown

1. The Host

Announcing the host is a longstanding tradition, though it is no longer as strictly observed as it once was.Traditionally, the bride’s parents take center stage here, but these days, anything goes! Whether the couple is hosting, families are teaming up, or you’re honoring loved ones, you’ve got plenty of ways to phrase it. This section should establish who’s bringing everyone together. While it’s still a custom, you don’t see it as much in modern wedding invitations. Many couples are opting to leave out the host altogether or use more laid-back wording instead.

Here are some ideas to inspire your wording:

  • Traditional Hosting

“Mr. and Mrs. William Carter invite you to celebrate the marriage of their daughter, Sophie Jane, to Ethan James…”

  • Couple Hosting

“Together with their families, Maya and Ben invite you to share in their joy as they tie the knot…”

  • Honoring a Deceased Parent

2. Request to Attend

Now it’s time to officially invite your guests to your big day! This part sets the vibe—whether you’re keeping it traditional or going for something more relaxed. Here’s where you let people know you want them there to celebrate with you.

Check out these examples for inspiration:

  • Classic and Formal:

“The honor of your presence is requested at the marriage of their children…”

  • Warm and Personal:

“We would love for you to join us as we celebrate our wedding day!”

  • Modern and Fun:

“Let’s make memories together! Please come and celebrate with us…”

3. Action Line

Here’s where you spell out what you’re inviting your loved ones to share in—whether it’s a grand ceremony or an intimate celebration. Think of this as the spotlight moment of your invitation, setting the stage for what’s to come!

Here are some examples to get you started:

  • Traditional (Parents Hosting):
    “At the marriage of their daughter…”
  • Casual and Couple-Focused:
    “At the celebration of their union…”
    “As they say ‘I do!’”
    “In celebration of their marriage…”

4. Names of the Couple

While it’s pretty straightforward, some traditions and details might make you pause. Who goes first? What about middle names? And how do you handle same-sex couples? Deciding the order and format depends on your preferences and the tone of your celebration. Choose what feels right—after all, it’s your day!

  • Traditional (Different-Sex Couples): 

The bride’s name is typically listed first, followed by the groom’s. For formal invites, the bride’s first and middle names are used, while the groom’s full name, including titles, is listed.

  • Same-Sex Couples: 

There’s no set rule—names can be in alphabetical order, based on personal preference, or simply what looks best with your design.

  • Casual Weddings: 

For a relaxed, laid-back tone, first names alone are perfectly fine.

5. Date and Time

When it comes to adding the date and time, formal weddings usually stick to tradition, while casual celebrations can take a more relaxed approach. Here’s how to get it just right:

  • Formal Weddings: 

The date and time are fully spelled out, adding an elegant touch.

Example: Saturday, the ninth of July, two thousand twenty-four, at five o’clock in the evening

  • Casual Weddings: 

You can keep things simple by using numerals.

Example: July 9, 2024, at 5:00 PM

Some quick tips:

  • For formal invites, avoid abbreviations and write the year in lowercase (no “and” before the year).
  • If your ceremony is in the evening (starting at 5:00 PM or later), specify “in the evening.” Afternoon weddings (noon to 4:00 PM) can just use “o’clock” or “in the afternoon.”

6. Location

Where’s the big day happening? The venue details should be clear and easy to follow, setting the scene for your celebration. Here’s how to format it:

  • Formal Weddings: Include the venue name, city, and state spelled out in full. Skip the street address unless it’s a private home or tricky to find.
    Example: The Crystal Ballroom
    The Magnolia Hotel
    Dallas, Texas
  • Casual Weddings: You can still keep it simple but feel free to use abbreviations for the state if that suits your vibe.
    Example: Meadowbrook Hall
    Portland, OR

7. Reception Information

Let your guests know what to expect after the ceremony—it’s where the real celebration begins! Here’s how to keep things simple and clear:

  • Same Location? Just say something like:
    “Reception to follow”
    or
    “Dinner and dancing to follow.”
  • Different Location? List the reception venue right after the ceremony details or on a separate card:
    “Reception to follow at The Sunset Pavilion.”
  • Not Serving a Full Meal? Set the right expectations with phrases like:
    “Join us for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing.”
    or
    “Cake, punch, and merriment to follow.”

8. Other Considerations

Dress Code
Including a dress code is optional, but it can definitely help your guests know what to wear. The one exception? If your wedding is black tie, be sure to call it out on the invite. If you don’t mention a dress code, your guests will usually take their cue from the formality of your invitation. For example, a fancier invite says “formal” while a laid-back design suggests a more casual vibe. The dress code should come after the reception info.

Dress Code Wording Examples:

  • Black tie: Tuxedos and floor-length gowns
  • Formal attire: Suits and elegant dresses
  • Cocktail attire: Suits or dress shirts with ties, cocktail dresses
  • Beach casual: Button-down shirts, sundresses, shorts, sandals

Feel free to place it in the lower right corner or add a note at the bottom if you prefer:

  • “Black tie requested”
  • “Cocktail attire please”

Wedding Website
Instead of printing your wedding website directly on the main invitation, it’s best to include it on a separate reception or info card. You could also include your URL (or even a QR code) on your save the date so guests can easily access all the details in one place.

9. RSVP Card

Great news! Wording your RSVP card (also called the reply or response card) is much simpler than crafting the main invitation. Here’s what you’ll need:

RSVP Date:
Start with the all-important reply-by date, which should be about three to four weeks before the big day. This gives you time to get a final headcount to your caterer and lock in your seating chart.

Consistency is Key:
Keep the tone of the RSVP card in line with the invitation. For formal invitations, use phrasing like “the favor of a reply” (matching “the honor of your presence” from the invite). For something a bit more casual, you can go with “Kindly reply by” or “Kindly respond by.”

Guest(s) Names:
Add a line for guests to write their names, along with checkboxes for accepting or declining the invitation. If you want to go formal, you can use the “M” line (for Mr., Mrs., Miss, or Ms.), but for a more laid-back vibe, simply use “Name(s)” instead.

Extras You Can Add:

  • Meal choices (with checkboxes or icons)
  • Fun song requests like “We promise to dance if you play _________”

10. Reception Cards

If your ceremony and reception are at the same place, you can keep it simple with “Reception to follow” at the bottom of the invite. But if they’re at different locations, treat the reception as its own event by including a separate reception card with all the venue details.

11. Activity Card

Elegant and Woodsy RT Lodge Wedding

Katrina and Nicholas envisioned an unforgettable wedding weekend with their closest family and friends, and they made it happen. They chose the natural beauty of RT Lodge as their setting, combining its rustic charm with elegant details and incredible food as the centerpiece. Their RT Lodge wedding was a perfect blend of woodsy elegance, filled with personal touches,  stunning decor, and florals that created an extraordinary and memorable celebration.

In the middle of a winding road surrounded by tall trees, the couple exchanged their vows, with beautiful flowers framing the special moment. After their woodland ceremony, the pair, being food lovers, chose to have a tented reception. They enjoyed a delicious meal at long tables decorated with low flower arrangements and candles, all set under a canopy of greenery and twinkling fairy lights.

The intimate details, thoughtful touches, and stunning landscape made their big day special. Creating Their Dream RT Lodge Wedding Experience

We took a road trip during our search, staying at four different venues and meeting with their wedding planners. RT Lodge was the last stop, and we knew right when we checked into our room that it felt like home. We are foodies, so food was essential to us. After a dinner with their renowned chef, Trevor Stockton, we knew we absolutely needed to have his food at our wedding. The cherry on top was our meeting the next day with our wedding planner. She was incredibly sweet and organized and catered to our every need. She showed us various options for ceremony locations, and I knew I wanted a unique place to hold the ceremony. RT Lodge’s “winding road” was charming and perfect. After our time at RT Lodge, we knew it was the perfect place to have our wedding. 

How Their Venue Influenced Their Wedding Aesthetic

I’m a huge gardener, so I wanted the flowers to reflect what I love to grow. We chose a colorful arrangement of pinks, oranges, yellows, and a small splash of blue. The woods of RT Lodge also inspired the next steps in our wedding planning. The save-the-dates were engraved wooden magnets, and the invitations mirrored the color palette, featuring a personalized map of RT Lodge. We found rental shelves, couches, tables, chairs, gorgeous velvet green tablecloths, and crystal-patterned champagne glasses for our champagne tower. The setting of our cocktail hour was pure elegance, with florals, crystal glasses, charcuterie boards, and falling leaves from the Smoky Mountain trees. The escort cards were a DIY wooden holder and card that embodied the woodsy feel of RT Lodge, displayed on beautiful shelves in front of the koi pond. Allowing the venue to inspire us was the best way to create a cohesive wedding day.

Personal Stories Weaved Into Their Ceremony

We wanted a very intimate ceremony where our guests could truly dive into our love story and really understand who we were together and why we were getting married. Nick’s youth pastor served as our officiant, and we met with him several times before the wedding to discuss the ceremony sequence and content. He also met with us individually to gather personal stories about one another that he could incorporate. He began the ceremony by sharing these stories, reflecting on his experience watching Nick grow up, and finally, our love story. We asked my sister to be part of our ceremony by reading our favorite Bible verse, Romans 12:9-18. She’s always been a huge supporter of our relationship and sounding board as we fell in love. The best and most special part of our ceremony was our vows. We decided a few months before the wedding to write our own meaningful vows to each other. We both read our vows from our leather notebooks and at the end, we put our vows and a five-year note to one another into a custom wooden box. We also included a bottle of wine and our guests’ notes and nailed it shut.

Adding a Fun Twist with a Wedding Newspaper and Scratch-Off Surprises

We created a newspaper for the wedding with a scratch-off ticket attached. In the early days of our long-distance relationship, Nick would surprise me with a scratch-off every time we met, so we thought it would be a fun touch to include them in the celebration. At the end of the night, Nick and I discovered a stack of leftover scratch-offs and decided to scratch them off together. Our friends were surrounding us, so we had an incredible cheering squad. Unfortunately, there were no winners, but it was incredibly memorable as we scratched them off while signing our wedding paperwork.

Hire a team that you trust so you can live your day to the fullest! Surround yourself with vendors and planners who understand your vision and can handle all the details, big and small. When you have confidence in your team, you won’t have to stress about timelines, setups, or last-minute changes. Instead, you can relax and truly immerse yourself in each moment, whether walking down the aisle, dancing with loved ones, or simply enjoying the atmosphere you’ve created. Being fully present without worrying will allow you to soak up all the joy and love of your special day, making it everything you’ve dreamed of and more.

Creating the Perfect Vibe with Reception Music and Serving Up Favorite Late-Night Snacks

One of the biggest compliments we received was about our reception music. We used a recommended DJ from our venue, and had several meetings with him before the event. We were very specific about what music we wanted to be played and provided him with “no” and “need to play” lists. This made sure the vibe of our night was spot on. The dance floor was packed all evening, and people partied the night away. After the reception, we hosted an after-party in the bar of RT Lodge. This was an incredible spot for our late-night guests to gather and continue the celebration. We served pizza rolls and chicken tenders, which are our favorite late-night snacks. They were a huge hit! Tailoring the wedding to what you both enjoy is incredibly important, creating a space you’ll love.

Transforming Their Celebration into a Vacation for Guests

We are most proud of the venue and how seamlessly the weekend flowed. Everything about our weekend conveyed a sense of elegant comfort. It was beautiful and luxurious but still refreshing. The staff at RT Lodge played a huge part in the weekend’s success. Since we had the whole venue for ourselves, each room, meal, and event was catered entirely to our needs. We wanted our wedding to be an incredible experience for our guests. We loved RT Lodge so much that we knew a destination wedding there would be worth it and wanted to show our guests how wonderful the location was. Once we found RT Lodge, we knew we wanted it to be an exclusive, weekend-long event where we could maximize our time with our guests. We hosted events from Friday night to Sunday morning, allowing us to see everyone much more than just the wedding day. Our guests swooned over the venue, the hiking trails, the food, and the cozy setting in the woods. Not only did they attend our wedding, but they truly had a vacation.

Unique and Thoughtful Wedding Favors

We arranged a few special favors for our guests. At the welcome party on Friday, we set out kettle corn for all of our guests. They packaged it beautifully, and our guests devoured it the first night. We handed out personalized newspapers that I designed and printed on authentic newsprint in London for the wedding day. We attached a scratch-off lottery ticket to all newspapers and a story in the paper explaining how, early in our long-distance relationship, Nick would always bring me a scratch-off. This became a fun tradition we shared each time we saw each other.

This Intimate Peter Pan Bistro Wedding Was the Definition of Cozy

Jenn and Matthew’s Peter Pan Bistro wedding was a cozy, sentimental affair focused on community, delicious food, and timeless elegance. Opting for a late fall event, they drew inspiration from autumn walks, fondue parties, and intimate gatherings with friends. Prioritizing a small guest list and simple logistics, they skipped a wedding party and chose the charming Toronto restaurant for the evening. With DIY touches, mismatched secondhand decor, and a warm color palette, their big day was a perfect blend of personal memories and classic romance.

The couple selected a charming 1980s heritage building, an ideal backdrop for their day. After officially tying the knot at Guelph City Hall the day before, they held a symbolic ceremony framed by stunning fall florals and stained glass windows. Peter Pan Bistro, Toronto, Canada

Incorporating Meaningful Items into Their Peter Pan Bistro Wedding

In keeping with our personal values of reusing and incorporating meaningful items, we designed our rings by reworking an inherited ring set. My outfit included lace from the dress my mom and baba wore, and I also wore some of their jewelry. Matthew wore a navy suit and tie he already owned, only treating himself to a new pair of socks.

Navigating Legalities and Embracing a Symbolic Ceremony 

The day before, we went to Guelph City Hall with our parents to take care of the legalities. We surprised them by sharing vows we had written for them. We decided to have a symbolic ceremony on the day, with a close family friend officiating. He’s a great storyteller and always knows how to make us laugh. Both ceremonies reflected a humanist perspective, and we wrote our own vows, which made them very special. It was a full expression of who we are and included surprises for each other.

Once we visited Peter Pan Bistro, the vibe of the upstairs event space and the main floor restaurant was exactly what we were looking for. The historical building perfectly blended the outside with the inside in an elegant yet understated way. With its fantastic bar, cozy booths on the main floor, stained glass, fireplace upstairs, and tall punched tin ceiling, it felt right for a big dinner party on a cozy winter night. The florist played a crucial role in bringing our vision to life. With all the venue’s character, we focused primarily on florals for our decor. Mackenzie of Fable Floral Design embraced our ideas, incorporating mushrooms and a mix of secondhand bud vases we could send home with guests. She also managed candles and rentals, making it a one-stop shop for us. Her recommendations for linen rentals for napkins and runners helped create a cohesive and streamlined decor plan.

Overcoming Design Challenges with DIY Solutions

The card box was a collaborative DIY project. We discovered a traveling card box shaped like a charming little wooden house used at numerous weddings and events across the province. Made by someone’s aunt, it was sturdy and unique enough to be shared. We added our decorations, giving the “Just Married” bunting a fresh twist by labeling it “A Life Event,” as we affectionately referred to our milestone. We also used a digital pack from Pulp Templates Company on Etsy to design our menus and print signage. This creative outlet was enjoyable, and the user-friendly WYSIWYG online editing tool made it much more accessible, especially after facing challenges with Adobe Illustrator for our original e-invites.

Creating Lasting Memories with Friends and Family

Walking into the space and seeing all the flowers set up for dinner was unforgettable. We were in awe, smiling at how the dreamy atmosphere made all the effort worthwhile. It truly felt like a special day, and everyone looked fantastic. Although we didn’t rehearse the first dance, we had always known the song “Postcards from Italy” by Beirut. Riding the day’s high, we spun and swayed together, smiling the whole time. The banter between our dear friend who attended the event and the family members and friends who gave speeches was hilarious. The smaller, more intimate vibe made it feel even more meaningful.

The Power of Asking: Finding Flexibility in Planning

Whether it’s about timing, extra cleanup, sound equipment, or bar menu options, you might find more flexibility than you expect; though it may come with a cost, all you have to do is ask. Many items, like event chairs and candles, are priced as if you want everything to match or be brand new. If that’s not a priority for you, plenty of simple and less wasteful alternatives are available. Be sure to explore reuse boards and marketplaces for unique finds. Regarding accessibility, while we loved our venue, the layout across two floors was complicated, especially with only a long flight of stairs and no elevator. Fortunately, there were washrooms on the second floor with the event space. We also chose to skip many traditional elements. We received helpful advice to start with a blank slate and build up what you want rather than feeling like you’re subtracting things.

Why a Peter Pan Bistro Wedding Was the Right Choice

We chose a restaurant for our wedding to ensure high food and drink quality while accommodating dietary restrictions and allergies. Supporting a restaurant after the COVID shutdown was vital, but we were cautious about potential closures and focused on established venues. Some places we considered could only accommodate 40 guests or fewer, so we adjusted our search for venues that could fit 60 to 75 for a seated dinner within that number. We appreciated that the location was transit accessible and relatively central, although the final-mile traffic did create some challenges on a Saturday evening. The building’s history and the restaurant’s charm ultimately won us over, especially after enjoying a delicious meal on our first visit, which included a savory truffle crème brûlée appetizer. We also liked that the event menus featured unique options, including excellent gluten-free and vegetarian choices.

Enhancing the Tablescape with Forest-Inspired Favors that Doubles as Decor

To enhance the tablescape, we gave out beeswax candles in various forest-inspired shapes, such as pine cones, morel mushrooms, and delicate lotus-like droplets. Our goal was to offer a consumable, local product that was easy for our guests to transport.
