Snowy Fall Festival-Themed Wedding at Mt. Ashland Ski Area

December 7, 2020 | Junebug Weddings

One look at this wedding celebration and you will be running to your nearest snow-capped mountains. There are so many couples nowadays that are forgoing wedding traditions and making their own nuptials much more personalized. For Hannah and Kevin, they truly made this Mt. Ashland wedding their own.

This adventure loving couple exchanged their I do’s on top of a mountain surrounded by incredible shades of greenery that had been kissed by the snow. Whether it was a chic white fur coat, bold blue ornate boots, a dressed-up snowmobile ride, or the matching winter hats, this wedding was anything but ordinary. Keep on scrolling to see how photographer, and Junebug member, Kami Olavarria captured this snowy fall-festival themed wedding.

The Couple:
Hannah and Kevin

The Wedding:
Mt. Ashland Ski Area, Ashland, OR

Making The Mt. Ashland Wedding Ceremony More Personalized

My husband and I wrote letters to each other that we read aloud during our first look. We then recited vows during the ceremony that my brother officiated. It was super special to have my brother there, even after he drove over 14 hours straight from Alaska to make it to the wedding in time.

Wedding Fashion With Faux Fur And Bolo Ties

During the ceremony, I wore a Free People faux fur jacket. The tassels really added a fun flair. I wanted something fun and unique and I loved how timeless it felt. After that, I changed into a gold jumpsuit to dance the night away. The bridal party wore mismatched jewel tones; some patterned, some plain. We wanted our bridal party to wear things they were comfortable in and would wear again in the future. We made all the groomsmen custom bolo ties in our shop. Each one was special to the individual groomsman.

Working with Kami Olavarria

Kami was super detailed and he paid close attention to the timeline and helped me make adjustments so that things would run much smoother—things that I didn’t even think about! Kami gave us such great energy and kept everyone in the mood for family photos and bridal party shots, even in the middle of a snowstorm. She really advocated for Kevin and I and what we wanted during our wedding day and was our biggest fan during the wedding planning process as well.

Wedding Advice From the Bride

Don’t worry too much about traditions, or the finest details. We focused more on creating a vibe than about any one specific detail. Also, invest in the vendors you believe in. Wedding cost adds up fast, but having Kami, our band, and our other solid vendors are truly what made our day as epic as it was! It wouldn’t have been the same, stress-free day without our vendor team.

From lacy bralettes and lace undies to flirty bodysuits and cozy loungewear, you can mix and match these pieces to create boudoir outfits that show off your sweet side and your sexy side!

Bras And Bralettes

It’s amazing what a good bra can do for your confidence. Pair it with a matching pair of undies for a classic look, or tease your future spouse with peek-a-boo photos using a robe or sheets. Feel more uncomfortable in something unlined? Bralettes give that same cute but sexy look without the discomfort of wires.

1. Skarlett Blue Entice Underwire Balconette Bra ($64); 2. Free People Intimately LP Lace Racerback Bralette ($20); 3. b.tempt’d by Wacoal Ciao Bella Balconette Bra ($38); 4. Honeydew Intimates Lucy Bralette ($24); 5. Free People Intimately FP Adella Longline Bralette ($38); 6. Calvin Klein Dot Mesh Triangle Bralette ($38); 7. Simone Perele Saga Underwire Demi Bra ($120); 8. Wacoal Raffine Lace Bralette ($46); 9. Aerie Real Power Balconette Lightly Lined Bra ($59.95)

Undies

When it comes to boudoir shoots, a cute pair of undies can go a long way. Not only can you pair them with a matching bra, but you can also opt for an oversize t-shirt, a comfy sweater, or go bare on top–the options to mix and match are endless.

1. Hanky Panky Retro High Waist Thong ($23); 2. Free People Entice Thong ($22); 3. Free People So Fine Lace Boy Short ($48); 4. Wacoal Evocative Edge High Cut Briefs ($32);5. Bodysuits

If you prefer to be a little more covered up while still maintaining that alluring look, consider a bodysuit. You can find pieces that are strapless, long sleeve, lacy, plunging, and more.

Cute Comfy Clothes

Just because you are doing a boudoir shoot doesn’t mean that you can’t don cute comfy clothes. If you’re doing an at-home shoot, consider doing a few different looks–some sexy and some comfy. If you want to nix the sexy look altogether and feel more comfortable in comfy clothes, more power to you. Boudoir is all about feeling good. Parisian Burgundy Autumn Wedding at Cercle Suédois

November 26, 2020 | Junebug Weddings

Trips to Paris are always a good idea. Any destination wedding as gorgeous as Piper and Tarek’s has us pulling out maps and packing bags to escape to faraway places. With the glowing Eiffel Tower as a backdrop and the dark burgundy color palette, this Parisian autumn wedding at Cercle Suédois will make you fall in love.

Elodie at La Petite Agence brought the couple’s cultures and personalities together in this gorgeous ceremony from start to finish. Thankfully, Anais from Moonrise Photography captured all the details of this ceremony. Keep scrolling to see how magical this Paris wedding truly was.

The Couple:
Piper and Tarek

The Wedding:
Paris, France

Personalized Wedding

The most important thing to us was keeping the wedding very “us.” We didn’t want to follow too many rules, guidelines, or keep anything too traditional. Any opportunity to highlight our personalities—through decor, outfits, music, and details—we took. We even invited everyone to the dance floor after one minute of our first dance. What better way to celebrate our new union by inviting everyone we love to do the first dance with us? Our best friend, Jean, was the officiant and he read the ceremony and translated the vows in both English and Lebanese.

Two Cultures Came Together At Cercle Suédois

Since Tarek and I met in Paris, but are from opposite sides of the world, we really wanted to blend all of the cultures together. We blended French, Lebanese, and American ideas and traditions into the whole day. The most memorable part of the evening was seeing both sides of the family—who had just met—dancing together.  Seeing both sides of the family having a fantastic time with both American and Lebanese music was so much fun. Having guests from many corners of the Earth celebrate with us is something we will never forget.

Wedding Fashion In Paris Is A Must

Since it was almost winter, I wanted to wear a long-sleeved dress and I found the perfect one at Bridal Boutique in Lewisville, Texas. For my overall look, I wanted a slightly smokey makeup look and retro waves. The jewelry was a mix of old and new pieces. My earrings were a gift from Tarek years ago. The other pieces included an antique necklace from my grandmother, my mother’s garter, and my late father’s bow tie—which was wrapped around my bouquet. Tarek had a custom burgundy suit made at Massimo Dutti. He is very fashionable, so a regular black suit wouldn’t cut it. His outfit included a smoking jacket with black satin details and slim-cut pants. The groomsmen wore black suits with matching burgundy bow ties and pocket squares. My bridesmaids wore any full-length dress they liked, and they coordinated colors by pairs—two green, two black, and two burgundy.

Wedding Advice From The Bride

Definitely hire a planner for day-of coordination! Having a team handle the details of setting up and coordination really took the burden off of Tarek, me, and our family and friends. We could then enjoy every moment of the day at Cercle Suédois without worrying about if things were going as planned or not—we just had to make sure we were on time!

Folksy Hudson Valley Backyard Wedding at Windrift Hall

October 17, 2020 | riley

We’re so glad that Katie and Todd opted for an autumn wedding at Windrift Hall rather than eloping–their original plan. One look at these photos had us cozying up with blankets and sipping pumpkin spice lattes. The couple pulled off a fresh fall backyard feel with minimal decor by letting the beauty of New York’s countryside do all of the talking.

Katie’s custom crochet gown from Reclamation paired perfectly with her wool hat from Will & Bear, and Todd dressed to the nines in his charcoal suit from Suit Supply. And we can’t get enough of Katie’s deep orange satin suit that she changed into for the reception.

If you’re looking to be transported to an autumnal fairytale, keep scrolling to see the lovely photos captured by Eastlyn & Joshua. Just be sure to have your apple cider close by!

The Couple:

Katie and Todd

The Wedding:

Windrift Hall, West Coxsackie, New York

Boho Wedding Style

Our style embodied natural, minimal, and stylish components with subtle boho elements. I wore a custom dress made of reclaimed crochet lace with leather mules. I accessorized with a wide brim hat and gold-capped quill earrings. My husband wore a charcoal jacket, a brown crimson tie, black pants, and loafers. We didn’t have a traditional bridal party. Instead, I encouraged my girlfriends to wear something they felt reflected their style best.

Personalizing The Ceremony With Family

It was always our goal to have our guests feel like a part of our ceremony. One thing we did was pass our rings around to each guest so that each person could hold, kiss, or whisper kind thoughts on our marriage and link each person there. It’s so much more meaningful knowing that we are wearing everyone’s blessings on our hands! We also wrote and shared vows with our families to express our gratitude and love for them. The love shared was remarkable.

Why Windrift Hall

Our goal was always to have an intimate, backyard wedding without having to host the weekend at one of our homes. Going through Airbnb gave us the at-home experience we wanted. It also gave us flexibility when choosing our vendors, and acted as a place for some of our guests to stay for the entire weekend.

Permanent Wedding Invites + Other DIY Touches

We designed our wedding invitations (and eventually got them tattooed!) We also made our wedding favors, dinner menus, and sourced our slate table serving trays from a family member.

The Wedding Team:

Photography – Eastlyn & Joshua
Venue – Windrift Hall
Floral Design – 33 Munroe
Catering – Gracie’s Luncheonette
DJ – Beat Train Productions
Makeup Artist – Glam by Andria
Wedding Dress – Reclamation Design Company
Bridal Accessories – Will and Bear
Groom’s Apparel – Suit Supply
Rings – Rebekah Brooks
Rentals – Columbia Tent
Transportation – Coxsackie Transport

Congratulations again to Katie and Todd on their folksy backyard wedding at Windrift Hall! Thank you to Eastlyn & Joshua for capturing the day so beautifully and sharing it with us. If you love Katie’s suit as much as we do, check out some of our favorite bridal jumpsuits!

All Your Bridal Hair Questions Answered by Expert Stylists

June 17, 2020 | Junebug Weddings

When it comes to choosing your bridal hair look, we know you’ve probably pinned a ton of styles, or maybe you are choosing to go with a look that “looks like you.” Are you are torn between ideas? We’re here to help, babes! We chatted with expert stylists around the world to answer your most-asked bridal hair questions! From transitioning your look from day-to-night to how to prepare your hair for the big day, our stylists have got you covered.

Q: How should I prepare my hair for my wedding day?

A: “I get asked this question a lot and I always try to educate my clients on the importance of prepping their hair based on the specific hairstyle that they are hoping for. Firstly, the myth of having day old dirty hair is a thing of the past. I highly recommend coming to your wedding day appointment with clean, dry hair. I also always recommend prepping the hair with either a volumizing mousse for those with thicker hair or a texturizing spray for those with thinner hair. This will allow your hairstylist a clean, well-prepped canvas to create your dream hairstyle on.” — Breanne Petersen, Cassidy Watt Artistry Collective

A: “For my clients with straight hair, I prefer that their hair is “one day dirty” meaning they have washed and dried their hair the day before the trial/wedding date. However, for clients whose hair becomes very oily after just one day, I suggest that they wash and dry their hair the morning of their appointment. For clients with curly hair, who want to keep their natural curls intact, I suggest they wash and dry (using a diffuser) their hair the morning of, as well as utilize their preferred hair care products.” — Mandi Neuhardt, Beauty Brigade

A: “This is one of the main questions I get asked, as some brides prefer to only style their own hair, without the use of hair extensions. There is a common misconception that Afro hair does not grow. The average hair growth is 1/2 an inch a month, so the amount of time a bride has does play a factor with how much hair growth can be achieved. There are many things that can be done from taking vitamins, including certain foods in their diet, knowing your hair type, finding the right products and having a good hair routine that is consistent is very important. There are current hair trends within the natural hair community, such as using black rice water for hair growth. However, there are many different options, so research and investigation is the key to finding the best solution for you.” — Aina.M, Brides by Aina.M

Q: I am torn between styles, should I wear my hair up or down?

A: “There are a few factors to consider, when making this decision. So I like to ask my clients these questions in order to help them make a decision:

  • Weather/time of year: Will it be hot and humid? If yes, opt for an updo!
  • Hair texture: Does your hair hold curls well? If so, then go for that down style! If not, I’d suggest an updo or braided style.
  • Wedding dress cut or style: You just paid thousands of dollars for that amazing dress with the open back: SHOW IT OFF! Don’t want a full updo? Opt for a side swept style!

After answering these questions, if you really can’t make a decision between styles, then change your style between the ceremony and reception! Start with an updo and have your stylist either stay or have them show you how to create a different style after the ceremony.” — Mandi Neuhardt, Beauty Brigade

photos by Dani Purington Photography

Q: Should I wear a veil/ hair accessory?

A: “This is such a personal option in my opinion, but I think if your accessory or veil has a meaningful story behind it, or you feel more “bridal” with it, then absolutely! Just know you don’t have to have a veil. When you are standing in front of friends and family at the alter, that’s when the back or profile view of the hairstyle you’ve been dreaming about will be the star of the show, so no need to cover it with a veil if you are not 100% sold on it.” — Ashley Franke, Ash Franke Styles

SHOP BRIDAL HAIR ACCESSORIES: Deliziosa Accessori Diamond Side Hair Piece ($117.73); Savenchenko Design Bridal Hair Vine ($18.40); Wild Rose And Sparrow Eucalyptus Pearl Bridal Comb ($39.00); KEDR Flo Baby’s Breath Hair Pins ($24.30); Kryle Kryle Pearl Bridal Crown ($61.20)

Q: How do I prepare my natural afro hair the night before my wedding day?

A: “This really depends on the hairstyle that will be created on the day of your wedding. This is not a one answer “fits all styles” solution. However, if a bride is going to have an updo, for example,  I would suggest preparing the hair using the LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) method with products best suited to their hair type. This is the “tried and tested” way to lock in moisture and ensure that the hair is nourished and looking vibrant for the day ahead. It is always good to sleep with a silk hair bonnet or pillow to protect the hair from friction and fizzing. Some brides will already have a night time hair routine in place and know what products work for their hair. So its best to stick with what works leading up to their day but always happy to provide personal tips and tricks.” — Aina.M, Brides by Aina.M

Q: Do all my bridesmaids need to have the same hairstyle?

A: “NO! Just like our favorite trend of mix and match dresses, jumpsuits, pantsuits, etc. hair is not one size fits all. While I always ask my brides to have a general idea of the vibe they want to portray (relaxed, ethereal, glam, etc.) I think this is a great way for attendants to express themselves a little more! I mean we loved them for who they are!” — Colleen Calder, Aphrodite Salon

Q: Should I change my natural hair part to accommodate the hairstyle I want?

A: “If you are comfortable with the change, then absolutely YES!  However, I have had many clients who see a style in a photo that portrays the opposite of how they wear their hair on a daily basis, and once I’ve styled it as the photo shows, they ultimately decide against it because “they don’t look like themselves”. So one question I am always sure to ask, is how do you wear your hair on a daily basis? This helps me determine their level of comfort to change,  when designing a style unique to them!” — Mandi Neuhardt, Beauty Brigade

Q: My hair is really short, but I want a style that has length and volume. Can it be created?

A: “Afro hair is very versatile and it is an amazing canvas to be creative with. If a bride has short natural hair, I can create a beautiful bridal style by adding extra hair to construct their desired style. Hair extensions come in so many varieties, colors, lengths and textures to blend in with a bride’s natural hair type. Hair can be added by weaves, clip in hair, padding or by simply using Bobby pins. The fun and possibilities are endless!” — Aina.M, Brides by Aina.M

A: “We really like hair extensions to give an extra volume and will help the hair to hold the waves/curls. Also it can help to construct better updos!” Alex Corbanezi

photo by Florence Berry Photography; hairstyle by Brides by Aina.M

Q: Is my hair type suited for this style?

A: “I always tell my brides that this is assessment I always like to make BEFORE the wedding, this is why I require a trial run for all booking brides, just like your wedding dress, your wedding hair needs to be “tried on” not many people wear these formal styles daily, so you have to make sure you are comfortable and happy with the style you’ve chosen as your inspiration on YOU and not just on the person modeling it.” — Ashley Franke, Ash Franke Styles

Q: Will my hairstyle last all day?

A: “One of my biggest goals with each hairstyle that I create is for it to last all day and night! Your hairstylist will take many measures to ensure your style looks stunning after a full day of laughing, hugging and dancing. If the style that you are hoping for will not work for your hair type and texture we will work with you to create a compromise that achieves a similar style that is more suited to your individual hair needs and will last all night.” — Breanne Petersen, Cassidy Watt Artistry Collective

We’ve been majorly inspired by all things minimalist lately, from tablescapes to floral design. If you love all things simple, this post is for you! We’ve rounded up our favorite pieces of minimalist jewelry to wear on your wedding day. From small hoop earrings to a dainty initial necklace to petite wedding bands, these designs may be simple, but they still make a big statement.

Who Minimalist Wedding Jewelry Is Good For

If you don’t typically wear jewelry, but still want to transform your wedding attire, minimalist wedding jewelry may be the right choice for you. It still gives you the appearance of being dressed up without being too flashy. And the best part? Because the pieces are so small, you can wear them regularly without standing out!

Oh, and did we mention that the style fits quite literally every wedding style? From sleek, modern “I do’s” to romantic vows in the Italian countryside, the simplicity of the jewelry matches every single wedding aesthetic.

DIY Minimalist Toronto Loft Wedding at Five Brock

January 8, 2020 | Junebug Weddings

Kejina and Jeremy wanted to create a wedding that felt like a dinner party they would have at home—a day that “felt like us”—so they chose Five Brock for it’s open-concept, loft design. Fun fact: The venue is right around the corner from where the couple shared their first date! We’re loving how Kejina DIY’d most of the decor, including the invitations, menus, table numbers, and seating chart. If you’re into fashion, you’re sure to love this couple’s modern, trendy style, with Kejina in a sleek Catherine Deane gown and Jeremy looking dapper in a white suit jacket and black pants from Suit Supply. We can’t wait for you to get inspired by these incredible photos by Nikki Mills!

The Couple:

Kejina & Jeremy

The Wedding:

Five Brock, Toronto, Canada

The most important thing was that we planned our wedding to feel like “us”. It was really important to have our wedding be an intimate gathering that felt like a dinner party we would host at home. We live in a different city from most of our friends and family and don’t get to have dinner parties with them often, so we really wanted the wedding to feel like that. We also wanted it to really represent us and our family unit, and have Jeremy‘s daughters be a part of the day.

Wedding planning advice from the bride and groom: Everyone has an opinion about what your wedding should be like. Just stick to what’s important to you as a couple and focus on the things that honor your relationship. There are thousands of ideas of what you can do, just focus on those things that add impact that your guests will remember and appreciate.

We wanted an open concept loft style venue that would allow us to have our ceremony and reception in the same place. The venue we chose ended up being right around the corner from our first date!

We chose our vibe to reflect who we are normally – modern and trendy, but not over the top. The overall feel was minimal chic, everything was simple but the elements that were designed were thought out very intentionally. I DIY’d our invites, menus, table numbers and seating chart. I love the look of clear table numbers, so I bought clear frames and used a Cricut to create the vinyl numbers. We also had personalized menus for each guest that reflected their meal choices.

This Wine-Loving Bride and Groom Married in a Rosé Inspired Rose Gold Malibu Vineyard Wedding at Cielo Farms

June 24, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

When you love wine as much as Lauren and Justin do, it’s only natural to have your wedding at a vineyard like Cielo Farms! The venue, which is nestled in the mountains of Malibu, is gorgeous on its own, but the addition of rose gold accents, vintage decor, and muted florals from Best Day Ever Floral Design only made it more breath-taking and expressed the couple’s personalities. We love that the bride went with a vintage-inspired Bo and Luca gown and beaded headpiece and that the groom took a more modern, laid-back approach in his style. Everything about this wedding felt effortless and authentic, and both Wanderlust Creatives and Klassey Productions did a brilliant job documenting it all!

The Couple:

Lauren and Justin

The Wedding:

Cielo Farms, Malibu, California

Location and vibe were key. We wanted our wedding to feel unique and truthful to us. It was so important for us to walk away from our wedding feeling like it was special and everyone had an amazing time. We also wanted people to specifically feel that yes- that day was so Justin and Lauren and no one else could have recreated it in that way. That to me is what makes it so special and important because then it is truly a day that reflects the two people getting married.

I walked down the aisle to “All Eye’s on You” by St. LuciaJustin picked it specifically, which felt so special to me.

Neither of us is particularly religious, so this felt like the perfect opportunity to really make the day feel personal to us. One of my bridesmaid’s husbands, who is also such a good friend of ours, officiated our wedding. He did such a fantastic job and it made us feel so grateful that he agreed to do it! To be honest, it’s such a great thing to ask of a friend because I know he was so honored that we even thought of him. It really has brought us even closer together as friends knowing we will always share that day in that way!

We both wanted to get married outside, so weather and location were key. We also loved the idea of getting married at a vineyard because we both love wine! With me being from Los Angeles and Justin being from New York and us both living in Brooklyn, we would always spend roughly two weeks at my house in LA over the Christmas holidays. We don’t make it to LA too often, so it’s a good time for us to catch up with family. One year, we decided to go wine tasting in Malibu, and it was one of the best days we ever had! We knew we should definitely do Malibu as our wedding destination. When it came to looking at venues, we only looked at three. We just knew that Cielo Farms, a small vineyard tucked away in the Malibu hills, was perfect for us!

I knew I wanted long sleeves, as it would best fit my silhouette. I only went to two bridal salons and maybe tried on 9 dresses in total, and immediately knew this was the dress. It has hand beaded/sewn detail all over with a sheer high neck in the front and an open back. It also had a slimline on the bottom half, so it didn’t feel too “poufy.” To me, it was the perfect mix of understated sexy. In fact, a lot of people asked me if it was vintage, which I thought was so cool because I think it means the dress is truly timeless. If I have a daughter one day, I’d love to keep it around as an option for her to wear. That would be so epic!

Justin and I rented a vintage 1964 light blue Ford Thunderbird to arrive in. It was great for pictures and our wedding video. The car was seriously so cool! However, it was pretty low to the ground and, as we were being filmed to get into the car and drive to our venue for the day, Justin ripped his pants….right along the crotch! We all just paused and didn’t know what to do. My bridesmaid’s mom was able to sew them up, but she told him “no sudden movements. These might last you for the ceremony and that’s it.” It was so funny watching him get into the car the second time, trying to barely move his body! And, funnily enough, the pants stayed together all night! We brought a backup pair and sneakers just in case. I also told everyone, if he were to change, it would be one of the few weddings in history where the groom does an outfit change and the bride doesn’t!

I can’t stress how important it is that the day is about both of you and not just the bride. I would personally suggest making sure both of you are equally involved in the planning process. That way the day feels like it represents both of you, plus the stress of planning isn’t just sitting on one person’s shoulders.

We did our first dance to “No Hard Feelings” by The Avett Brothers because it is mine and Justin‘s favorite song and one of our favorite bands of all time. Every time we listen to the song we just get all the feels. It’s so emotionally beautiful.

Everything You Need to Know About Wedding Dress Shopping

May 20, 2019 | riley

Whether you’ve dreamed about your wedding gown for years or you’ve got no clue where to start, wedding dress shopping can be a tulle-filled maze that can leave you overwhelmed, frustrated, and ultimately unhappy with your final purchase. That’s why we’re here to help ensure you’re equipped with everything you need to know to find your dress without the stress.

Finding your dream wedding-day outfit, even if it’s not a dress–hello, jumpsuits–doesn’t have to be so draining. These tips will keep you sane and organized as you navigate the world of boutiques, online retailers, and dress designers. Shopping for your dress is a balancing act–style, budget, time, and a certain magical feeling all have to perfectly align for you to find the one. Keep these wedding dress shopping tips in mind when you begin the dress shopping process, and you’ll find the dress of your dreams. Trust us.

Timing Your Wedding Dress Shopping

You’ll want to start your dress search early because shipping dates for wedding dresses can take up to 6-8 months. We know, it sounds crazy. Most designers typically don’t have a warehouse full of gowns. Unless you’re ordering from online retailers, most designers don’t begin construction until the order is placed.

Some brides–though this is not common, so don’t let it scare you–also run into the issue of ordering what they think is their dream dress, only to realize that their wedding style has shifted slightly since they began shopping. If this happens, you may have time to get a second dress before the big day. Overall, there is no downside to getting started early.

If you’re in a pinch and you need a gown ASAP, these 30 ready-to-ship gowns that you can buy right now may be the perfect option for you.

Wedding Dress Budgets

According to a study done by The Knot, the average wedding dress cost is $1,500 to $2,500. However, it’s not far fetched to see gowns at your local boutique creeping closer to $10,000 to $15,000. To avoid spending more than you want, make your budget clear with your bridal consultant, and don’t pull styles that are over–even if you just want to see how it looks.

If you’re on a budget, keep in mind that there are resale options available to you, such as Nearly Newlywed or Once Wed. Many boutiques also have off the rack sales where you can buy discontinued samples off of the floor. You can also try your hand at finding a non-traditional dress via shops like ASOS, Lulu’s, or Show Me Your Mumu.

Wedding Dress Styles

One of the best wedding planning tips we can give to any newly engaged person is to have fun when it comes to your wedding-day look! Even if you’ve always dreamt of yourself in a princess ball gown silhouette, try on different styles, just in case. We often hear from brides that they ended up choosing a dress that wasn’t at all what they had in mind, so keep your mind open and have fun with it.

We believe that every body can wear every dress, so we’re not going to tell you what dress style fits your body best. The only way to figure out what works for you is to try on a wide variety of dresses and determine what makes you feel most confident. And if you’re nervous about going into your first bridal appointment, check out our guide on body positivity in wedding dress shopping and prep!

The Sizing Dilemma Of Wedding Dress Shopping

When you first start trying on wedding dresses, you might be shocked to learn that sizing is all over the place. These sizes aren’t anything remotely close to what you wear in your everyday clothes. Wedding dresses typically run one to two sizes smaller than your street size. After finding your dream dress, your consultant will take your measurements and recommend a size based on the designer’s size chart. It’s wise to go with the size that fits you now rather than go smaller because you believe you will lose weight. It’s easier to take a dress in than it is to let it out. No matter what, remember that size is just a number. What matters most is how the dress makes you feel.

Be Prepared For Limited Availability

Another thing to keep in mind is that most boutiques only carry one or two sizes of a gown–typically in the 10 to 14 range–which means you’ll be trying on gowns that might not fit you. Your consultant will add clips to the back of the gown so that you can see what the gown would look like with the correct fit. Go into the experience knowing that the dresses you try on will look different from the final version you wear on your big day.

If you’re searching for a plus size gown, you may want to call ahead and make sure that the boutique you’re visiting carries both the designers and sizing that you need. While this is an unfortunate flaw in the wedding industry, times are changing and designers and boutiques are working hard to accommodate every body shape and size. If you want some curvy-friendly inspo, check out our round-up of stunning plus size wedding dresses.

7 Tips To Remember When You’re At A Bridal Boutique

  1. Limit your crew – The more people you bring, the more opinions you’ll have. Only bring your closest friends and family members who will uplift you and help you feel confident
  2. Don’t try on too many dresses in one day – Work with your consultant to pick 5-10 dresses. Too many dresses can lead to confusion and stress
  3. Eat beforehand – Shopping for gowns takes a lot of energy, so properly fuel yourself beforehand
  4. Be ready to walk away – A bridal boutique’s mission is to sell you a gown. While most consultants have your interests at heart, remember their job is to get you to select one of their dresses. If at any point you begin to feel uncomfortable, walk away. The right boutique won’t make you feel pressured
  5. Listen to your gut – You might not fall in love at first sight. Listen to your gut feelings when trying dresses on—especially if you can’t pinpoint why you’re feeling that way
  6. Take advice with a grain of salt – While your mom, sister, and best friend love you, they might not love the style of dress you choose. It may be difficult for them to put aside their biases to help you find your dress
  7. Don’t overdo it – If you get stuck in a rut of gown shopping, take a break. It’s easy to overthink this decision and get overwhelmed searching for the “perfect” gown. The more stressed you are about deciding, the less likely you’ll be able to

While dress shopping can seem overwhelming, our advice is to have fun. It’s easy to feel stressed, but don’t forget that this experience should be exciting and joyous. While a little stress is normal, don’t let it ruin the experience for you. Remember that your dress is just one small factor when looking at the bigger picture that is your wedding day!
