Creative Floral Alternatives for Your Wedding Decor

May 19, 2020 | nicole

Whether flowers aren’t your vibe or you’re looking to decorate your wedding on a budget, floral alternatives are a creative way to style your day! Even if you’re a big fan of flowers, unfortunately, you may not be able to access them in 2020 and 2021 weddings. COVID-19 is impacting the wedding industry in a variety of ways, from weddings being postponed to small businesses hurting. One aspect you may not realize is being affected are flowers! Wedding florists, who have been hit some of the hardest by the pandemic, have not only lost business but are seeing a shortage in flowers as wholesale businesses were shuttered during quarantine. With fewer flowers available, we wanted to offer up some of our favorite alternatives to using flowers throughout your day.

Not convinced you can decorate without flowers? These floral alternatives will change your mind:

  • Dried flowers, pampas grass, and leaves
  • Linens
  • Neon signs
  • Candles and lanterns
  • Terrariums
  • Greenery

Read on for examples of these floral alternatives in use plus some of our favorite shops + products to use in your wedding.

DRIED FLOWERS, PAMPAS GRASS, & LEAVES

Okay, okay, we know this is supposed to be a floral alternatives roundup, but hear us out. While fresh florals might be hard to come by due to COVID, dried florals are a beautiful alternative that also happens to be trending this year! From fluffy pampas grass to dried palms to exquisite arrangements crafted from dried flowers, you don’t have to rely on fresh blooms when decorating your wedding. Dried botanicals can have a big impact on your wedding style, too, whether you’re going for an edgy moody vibe or romantic fairy tale look.

LINENS

When designing your wedding, don’t forget to start with a strong foundation! Linens like patterned table runners or bold napkins in your wedding colors can be a great way to infuse your personal style into your decor. Plus, your table settings need napkins anyway, so why not make them a memorable part of your design!

NEON SIGNS

Wedding decor doesn’t have to be so serious, so consider adding a playful element to your day with a neon sign! Lots of wedding rental companies have romantic neon signs you can use, but if you’re down for the investment we love the idea of getting a personalized neon sign you can display in your home after the wedding is through. Pro tip: neon signs make a great addition to your sweetheart table setup or as part of the display above your dessert table or reception bar.

CANDLES + LANTERNS

Say yes to styling and ambiance with a collection of candles and lanterns around your wedding space! There’s nothing more romantic than dining by candlelight, so don’t be stingy. Candles can also be the answer to two big styling issues when decorating your wedding: contributing to your color palette and creating levels in your decor. Use candles in hues from your palette at varying heights to create visual interest throughout your design. Lanterns and other candle holders can also help you carry out your thematic vision, whether it’s rustic, Moroccan, modern, or bohemian.

Looking for a solution that’s chic and natural? Terrariums are the answer you’ve been looking for! Terrariums make great centerpieces or decor on your dessert or gift tables, plus they can serve double duty as favors for your guests at the end of the night. Keep them simple with a succulent or air plant in a diamond-shaped glass terrarium or make a major style statement with an assortment of plants inside of unique geometric shapes. No matter your venue, adding greenery to your decor creates a lush environment for tying the knot. From tropical fronds to fresh eucalyptus to putting your favorite houseplants on display, you not only incorporate natural elements but also carry out a theme by curating greenery to match your intended vibe. Use leaves sparingly and intentionally for a minimalist look or go big with full garlands on tables and arrangements hanging from the ceiling.

We love elopements! There’s something extra special about dedicating an entire day (or weekend) to just you and your person. Whether you’re dreaming of climbing a mountain, saying your “I do’s” in the jungle of Tulum, dancing in the streets downtown, or anything and everything in between—we want to show you that less can be oh-so much more. These intimate elopements are sure to drive your hearts wild and give you all the inspiration you could ever need to plan a day that’s uniquely you!

CHELSEA AND CARLTON’S YOSEMITE ELOPEMENT AT SUNSET

Where it took place: Yosemite National Park, Yosemite, California

Why we love it: The couple started their day cozying up in their dreamy little cabin before heading out to the park where they exchanged handwritten vows and hiked to the top of Taft Point just in time for some killer, and totally romantic, sunset photos. Pro tip: get a photography team who will attach your bouquet to your backpack in the most awesome, “adventure bride” way.

Where it took place: The Louie, New Orleans, Louisiana

Why we love it: Oodie and Nicole’s wedding day was not only full of lots of love and style, but creative, sentimental ideas. We love how these two read letters from loved ones on the morning-of and that they fit in a game of gin rummy (a staple in their relationship) before the big “I do.” If you’ve ever dreamed of a New Orleans elopement, or anywhere for that matter, we know you’ll be inspired by Nicole and Oodie’s colorful, mid-century day!

AIDA AND ISMAEL’S TABERNAS DESERT ELOPEMENT

Where it took place: Tabernas Desert, Tabernas, Spain

It was a perfect, moody space that gave off all those vintage rocker vibes! If you think their pre-ceremony location is cool, just wait until you see the vast desert where the couple shared their vows—and ceremonial vodka shots—under the golden Tabernas desert sun.

This Bohemian Arkansas Elopement at Buffalo Outdoor Center Included the Couple’s Dog as Their Witness

March 5, 2019 | juliette

Gracie and Mo’s sweet elopement at the Buffalo Outdoor Center and their story of “the year of weddings” has us seriously reconsidering the idea that your wedding day has to be just that, one day! The couple, who are planning a more traditional wedding for later this year, got to also plan a bohemian elopement with only their trusty dog by their side. With The Dogwood Collective in tow, they went back to where it all started near the Buffalo River to exchange vows and eat cinnamon rolls in the grass. Sonnet Weddings made sure every last detail, from the autumnal florals designed by Faith Hundley to the mini tent and picnic set up, had the bohemian vibe Gracie loves and reflected the couple’s laid-back personalities.

The Couple:

Gracie and Mo

The Wedding:

Buffalo Outdoor Center, Ponca, Arkansas

Our actual legit wedding date hasn’t happened yet. We got engaged in Santa Fe, NM where my fiance’s godfather lives, and he told us that we’d have multiple weddings during this season. I laughed and didn’t really know what he meant! That night at our engagement party, he had a surprise dinner guest: a Buddhist monk…to marry us! He recited the Loving- Kindness Mantras then we said a few vows. We still have the marriage certificate.; we just haven’t signed it.

When we got home to Arkansas, a photographer reached out to us about doing an elopement. It was such a sweet gift and I thought back to the comment of, ” You’ll have multiple weddings during this season.” Mo and I traveled in a van for 18 months and everyone thought we’d just elope on our trip. I’ve always dreamed of a bohemian elopement but I know that having an actual wedding with friends and family would be special. So, I got to have my cake and eat it too!

I want my actual wedding day to be more traditional and classic but I love a good bohemian elopement and I’m so excited that I get both. Why do weddings just have to be one day? We’re making it a year of multiple celebrations rather than putting it all in one day!

The most important part of planning the elopement to me was making sure that it was 100% us and at a spot that’s special to us. We picked the Buffalo River because that’s where our first date was almost 6 years ago and where we found our dog almost 4 years ago. An elopement there is perfect!

Our best advice? Do you. My parents cringe when I say we’re having multiple weddings. At the end of the day, it’s you and your partner. Wear the dress you want, have the flowers you like, eat the food you like. It’s not about them; it’s your day!

I think the most memorable part of the day was waking up, starting a fire and just relaxing. You don’t get to do that at a big wedding. I think that’s what’s so special about elopements.

We just had music in the background at the elopement and will have a band for the big wedding. Mo has a great Spotify playlist that we’ve been adding to throughout the years, which is of course what we were listening to.

The Wedding Team:

Photography – The Dogwood Collective
Event Planning – Sonnet Weddings
Ceremony Venue – Buffalo Outdoor Center
Floral Design – Faith Hundley
Wedding Dress – Alexandra Grecco via Joon Bridal
Groom’s Apparel – Hickey Freeman

Congratulations to Gracie and Mo, and a big thanks to Junebug member The Dogwood Collective for sharing this beautiful Arkansas elopement with Junebug! Love this photography style? Then you have to see this modern Valentine’s elopement inspiration!
