Desert Disco-Themed Palm Springs Wedding

Known for its warm weather, architecture, and retro atmosphere, Palm Springs is the perfect city for couples wanting to travel back into time–and that’s exactly what Laura and Tom were looking for. With the keywords “fun,” “casual,” and “party” in mind, they landed on a disco-themed Palm Springs wedding at Ace Hotel and Swim Club

Paying homage to their hometowns–Arizona and Maryland–along with their new home–Los Angeles–the newlywed’s special day was complete with pink flamingos, desert details, a taco bar, and a custom-made swan boat mimicking those found in Echo Park Lake. And as if that wasn’t fun enough, they also incorporated disco balls galore, donuts, and a late-night dip in the pool–fully dressed in their wedding attire, of course.

These two proved they know how to party, and luckily, Junebug member and photographer Alicia Wiley was there to capture it all. So whether you’re looking for retro wedding inspiration or want to break tradition and create a day that is the epitome of unconventional, scroll through these photos to travel back to the 70s.

How The Newlyweds Chose The Ace Hotel For Their Disco-Themed Palm Springs Wedding

When we originally went to look at venues, we brought a friend, Katherine Brooks. She suggested that we come up with three words that best describe how we see our wedding. The words were “fun,” “casual,” and “party!” We were really having a hard time with so many great options in Palm Springs, and she said, “remember your words.” That immediately landed us at the Ace Hotel and Swim Club.

Incorporating Their Hometowns Into The Special Day

We wanted to incorporate our hometowns and where we live now. We had Baltimore vibes with pink flamingos and old bay shrimp. Arizona was represented with cacti. And our new home in Los Angeles was represented with elote and a custom swan boat to mimic Echo Park lake. Keeping with our words, we had a quick ceremony followed by the LA Roller Girls passing out cocktails. Dinner was a taco bar, and instead of cake, we had donuts from Donas. The night continued with dancing, more roller girls, and a dip in the pool!

Creating A Memorable Wedding Weekend For Their Guests

I think everyone really enjoyed themselves, and we created a memorable weekend. We started with my uncles hosting welcome drinks at Margaritaville, complete with leis and crazy glasses, to set the tone of fun! We ended with a Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday. Our guests traveled from LA to as far as London, so I wanted everyone to really have a great time and enjoy Palm Springs.

Gorgeous Fairytale Tuscan Villa Wedding

Originally planning on tying the knot in Ireland, Amanda and Brendan decided to host a Tuscan villa wedding after one of their friends attended one and couldn’t stop gushing about how beautiful it was. And we’re so happy they did. With the help of Junebug member and planner The Tuscan Wedding, the destination “I do’s” looked like it came straight out of a storybook.

Villa Le Piazzole served as the perfect venue for the newlyweds, who fell in love with its sweeping views of the surrounding vineyard and olive grove and close proximity to the city center. The ceremony space was decked out in bright, colorful flowers arranged by Flowers Living which sat beautifully against the rolling green hills. Meanwhile, the reception was complete with long family-style tables draped in table runners made of greenery and the same bold florals from the ceremony and fairy lights that set the ambiance once the sun set.

With a classic menu consisting of pasta and limoncello margaritas, olive oil wedding favors, incredible scenery, and a vivid color palette, their special day was the epitome of an Italian dream come true–and we’re so thankful that Angelo Latorre was there to capture every magical detail.

Why The Newlyweds Chose Italy For Their Special Day

We knew we wanted an international wedding and had initially looked at Ireland as both of our families are Irish. One of our good friends returned from a wedding in Tuscany and said it was the most incredible experience and one of the most beautiful weddings she had ever been to. She encouraged us to look into Italy, and our families loved the idea as well! Once we settled on Tuscany, I found our planner. She sent over several venues, and it took us quite a while to choose which one was best because they were all so beautiful. Once we saw Villa Le Piazzole, we were sold. The location was perfect–it was only 15 minutes from the city center but still had the beauty of the Tuscan countryside.

Incorporating Family Into Their Special Day

We had our brother-in-law marry us, and he was truly the best pick for that role. He speaks so eloquently and really customized the ceremony to be about us and what’s important to us as a couple. He included some Jewish aspects, as my family is Jewish, which was also extremely special. One of my closest childhood friends and my sister-in-law did readings which were also beautiful and very us.

How Junebug Member The Tuscan Wedding Helped Them Achieve Their Dream Wedding

We wanted a romantic garden wedding in the hills of Tuscany, and that is exactly what our planner, The Tuscan Wedding, created for us! We wanted lots of bold colors mixed with black and white details. We wanted to make a big impact with flowers, lighting, and great Italian food and drinks. Our Italian villa was something out of a fairytale and made for the most magical setting.

Soaking Up Their Fairytale Tuscan Villa Wedding

Walking into our reception, with fairy lights illuminating the garden, seeing the beautiful florals, our family and closest friends smiling, and realizing we were together in the most beautiful country in the world, was truly surreal. We thought our dream wedding wasn’t going to happen in Italy. COVID changed many things at the last minute, but we were truly in heaven at that moment.

Unique New Year’s Eve Wedding In Minneapolis

July 23, 2022 | riley

When Amanda and Bret got engaged in January of 2020, they had no idea that a global pandemic would stop them from tying the knot on New Year’s Eve later that year. Much like many other couples all over the world, the couple was forced to postpone their wedding. Luckily, they didn’t have to give up their dream of having an NYE celebration.

With the help of planner This Love Weddings, the two said “I do” hours in a ceremony complete with candles and cafe lights galore, hanging florals and greenery, and small winter touches like wreaths and Christmas trees. The reception at The Varsity Theater that followed featured art deco signage, faux snow, and gilded gold details. Once the clock struck midnight, the newlyweds and all of their friends and family gathered in a circle to sing “Auld Lang Syne” and kick-off 2022 in one of the most memorable ways possible.

From the emotional first look to the snowy portraits in the heart of a Minnesota storm, Junebug member Adrian Steinbach did an amazing job of capturing all of the details of this vintage-inspired affair. Keep scrolling to take a step back in time and get inspired for your very own NYE nuptials.

Incorporating The Season Into Their Unique New Year’s Eve Wedding

We wanted to run with the New Year’s vibe in terms of the look and experience of the wedding, but we also wanted to embrace the cold, winter date of the wedding (it was well below freezing and lightly snowing on the day itself). Some choices were hence pretty straightforward. We used black, white, and gold as the general color scheme and leaned into a slightly art-deco design for our poster and printed materials. Bret and his groomsmen wore black suits to match the scheme. I wore a classic lace A-line dress, and my bridesmaids wore black dresses. A bit of a happy coincidence–our guests stayed a very art deco hotel downtown–the Foshay Tower

Wedding Planning Advice From The Couple

In planning, we encourage others to embrace adaptability. The wedding planning market (especially with venues and dates) can be very difficult to navigate. It’s this strange paradox of having so many choices and–after making a selection–feeling locked in and committed to that choice. Just know that all will be fine if a particular element doesn’t work out. You’ll walk away from your wedding, valuing the shared time you have with your partner, family, and friends. All the particulars of the event are very secondary to that happiness.

How They Chose The Varsity As Their Venue

Before we knew what we wanted, we knew what we didn’t want. We sought to avoid country clubs and event spaces, namely those somewhat pre-fab spaces clearly designed for expensive, Instagram-y weddings. That’s not to say these venues cannot be perfect for couples. We just wanted a unique space. The Varsity Theater, once we saw it was available, was the first thing we booked. It was relatively affordable, strange and beautiful, fit for a live band, apt for an open and well-stocked bar, and historically interesting. Bret is a film studies professor, so he was in love with the venue’s history as a movie theater and its amazing marquee.

DIY Details That Fit The Unique New Year’s Eve Wedding Theme

We DIYed all the printed material and designed it in the New Year’s/art deco style. We did the save the dates (photoshopping the event details into an artistic rendition of the Varsity marquee), the invitations, posters, table cards, welcome guides (listing event details and things to do in Minneapolis), and the specialty cocktail posters (for which we added gold foil ourselves onto a black background, white text). We also added a few flowers and candelabras to the Varsity decor.

Personalizing The Reception With Interactive Games

Given our friends and we are all kind of dorky, we wrote 15 trivia questions that each table could answer together. Split into three categories, these questions told each of our stories and our story together, using those details toward more general knowledge questions. Before the first dance, we announced the answers, giving us a platform to also thank our guests.

Ringing In The New Year With A Song

By the night’s end, we embraced the New Year’s event, handing out various hats and noisemakers at 11:30 pm. And at midnight, with an artificial snowfall over the dance floor, everyone sang “Auld Lang Syne” together to ring in the new year.
