Everything You Need to Know Before Your Boudoir Shoot

August 26, 2024 | riley

Boudoir photography is an intimate and empowering experience that celebrates beauty, confidence, and self-love. Whether you’re doing it as a gift for your future spouse, a special treat for yourself, or to mark a significant milestone, a boudoir shoot can be a transformative experience that boosts your self-esteem and leaves you with stunning images. If you’re considering booking a boudoir session, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of it.

Choosing the Right Photographer

Research and Style

The first step in planning your boudoir shoot is finding the right photographer. Start by researching photographers who specialize in boudoir photography, and look at their portfolios to see if their style aligns with your vision. Some photographers have a soft and romantic style, while others may offer a more bold and edgy approach. Consider what resonates with you—do you want your images to feel dreamy and ethereal, or are you looking for something more dramatic and intense?

Comfort and Connection

Boudoir photography is a deeply personal experience, and it’s important that you feel comfortable and connected with your photographer. Many boudoir photographers offer an initial consultation, either in person or over the phone, to discuss your vision, answer any questions you may have, and ensure that you’re a good fit. This is a great opportunity to get to know your photographer’s personality and approach. You want to work with someone who makes you feel at ease and who you can trust to capture your best self.

Budget Considerations

Boudoir sessions can vary widely in price, depending on the photographer’s experience, location, and the services included. Some photographers offer all-inclusive packages that include professional hair and makeup, multiple outfit changes, and a selection of prints or digital images. Others may charge a session fee with additional costs for prints and albums. It’s important to have a clear understanding of what’s included in your package and to choose a photographer who fits your budget while still delivering the quality and experience you’re looking for.

Planning Your Outfits

Lingerie Choices

One of the most exciting parts of preparing for your boudoir shoot is choosing your outfits. Lingerie is the obvious choice, but there are many different styles to consider. A lacy bra and panty set can be both sexy and classic, while a bodysuit can be flattering and add a touch of sophistication. Don’t be afraid to mix it up with different textures and colors. Black is always a timeless choice, but consider adding a pop of color or a pattern that reflects your personality. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for a corset or garter belt to add some extra flair.

Shop boudoir outfits:

Beyond Lingerie

While lingerie is a staple for boudoir shoots, don’t feel limited to just that. A sheer robe, an oversized sweater, or even a man’s button-up shirt can be incredibly sensual while still leaving a little to the imagination. You could also consider incorporating something personal, like a favorite piece of jewelry or a cherished item that has sentimental value.

Accessorize

Accessories can elevate your look and add a personal touch to your photos. Consider wearing statement jewelry, such as a long necklace, chandelier earrings, or a delicate anklet. High heels can elongate your legs and add an extra dose of confidence. Props like a silk robe, a bouquet of flowers, or even a vintage mirror can also enhance the style of your shoot.

Junebug Tip:

While it’s tempting to choose the most daring or intricate pieces, comfort is key. If you’re not comfortable, it will show in the photos. Make sure your lingerie fits well and isn’t too tight or loose. It’s also a good idea to bring a variety of options to your shoot so you can change if something doesn’t feel right. Remember, confidence is the most attractive thing you can wear, so choose outfits that make you feel your best.

Preparing for the Shoot

Skincare and Grooming

A few days before your shoot, start preparing your skin. Exfoliate and moisturize to ensure your skin is smooth and glowing. Consider getting a manicure and pedicure, as your hands and feet may be featured in some shots. If you plan to shave or wax, do so a day or two before the shoot to avoid any irritation or redness. And, of course, don’t forget about your hair—whether you’re planning to wear it down, up, or somewhere in between, make sure it’s clean and styled in a way that makes you feel confident.

Hydration and Rest

The days leading up to your shoot are crucial for looking and feeling your best. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water, and aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep the night before your shoot. Being well-rested will help reduce any puffiness and give you the energy you need to enjoy the experience.

Hair and Makeup

Many boudoir photographers offer professional hair and makeup as part of their packages, which can be a great way to take the stress out of getting ready. If you’re doing your own, go for a look that enhances your natural beauty while adding a bit of glam. Think soft, smoky eyes, defined brows, and a nude or red lip. Even if you’re not used to wearing much makeup, a little bit can go a long way in photographs. If you’re unsure, consider doing a trial run a few days before to perfect your look.

During the Shoot

Relax and Trust the Process

It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous before your boudoir shoot, especially if it’s your first time. Remember that your photographer is a professional, and their job is to make you look and feel your best. They will guide you through poses, help you with your wardrobe, and create an environment where you feel comfortable and empowered. The more you can relax and trust the process, the more your confidence will shine through in the photos.

Communication is Key

During your shoot, don’t be afraid to speak up if something doesn’t feel right or if you have a specific shot in mind. This is your session, and your photographer is there to bring your vision to life. Whether it’s adjusting a pose, changing an outfit, or tweaking the lighting, open communication will help ensure that the final images are exactly what you want.

Enjoy the Moment

This is your time to shine! The more fun you have, the better your photos will turn out. Don’t be afraid to move, laugh, and play around with different poses. Your photographer will capture those spontaneous moments that show off your personality and natural beauty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not comfortable in front of the camera?

It’s normal to feel a little shy, especially if you’ve never done a boudoir shoot before. Your photographer will guide you through poses and create an environment where you feel comfortable and relaxed. The key is to trust the process as well as your photographer and allow yourself to enjoy the experience.

Do I have to be nude?

Absolutely not. Boudoir is about what makes you feel confident and beautiful. Whether you want to go fully clothed, partially nude, or somewhere in between, it’s entirely up to you. Many boudoir photographers offer a variety of options, from implied nudity to full coverage, so you can choose what you’re most comfortable with.

Can I bring a friend?

Many photographers allow you to bring a friend for moral support but check with your photographer beforehand. Having a friend there can help calm your nerves and make the experience more enjoyable. Just make sure it’s someone who will be supportive and encouraging.

How do I prepare for my boudoir shoot?

Preparation is key to a successful boudoir shoot. In addition to choosing your outfits and planning your hair and makeup, take care of yourself in the days leading up to the shoot. Stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, and practice self-care.

What should I expect during the shoot?

During the shoot, expect to have fun! Your photographer will do everything in their power to make you feel as comfortable as possible (they understand how vulnerable this kind of shoot is)–from posing to outfit changes. Remember that boudoir photography is all about celebrating your unique beauty and confidence.

Whimsical Glamping Collective Retreat at Montesino Ranch Wedding

August 25, 2024 | justine

Alaina and Jack have always loved exploring and hiking through the Texas Hill Country, finding peace in its winding roads and scenic views. For their big day, they wanted to share that feeling with their guests, many of whom traveled from afar. With the stunning Hill Country as their backdrop, their Collective Retreat at Montesino Ranch wedding was filled with everything and everyone they love.

The ceremony was picture-perfect, as the couple exchanged vows surrounded by the serene countryside. The magic carried on at their main lodge reception, which had a cozy, treehouse tent feel. The celebration was beautifully rustic, with guests dining at wooden tables adorned with garden blooms, candles, and flowing linens and dancing the night away under twinkling string lights.

Their special day was a testament to their unique personalities, making it truly spectacular and one-of-a-kind. Savor every beautiful detail from this personality-packed event with these stunning images captured by Light as Gold.

The Couple:

Alaina and Jack

The Wedding:

Collective Retreat at Montesino Ranch, Wimberley, Texas, United States

Capturing the Hill Country Spirit at Their Collective Retreat at Montesino Ranch Wedding

Our wedding was romantic, personal, and Texas chic. Jack and I love exploring Texas Hill Country, Wimberley, TX, and Collective Retreats. Hill Country perfectly captured our favorite activities and the region’s charm. For our destination wedding, we showcased local wildflowers, served locally sourced produce and game, and included personal touches like my grandmother’s Texas sheet cake, a yoga class led by Jack’s favorite teacher, and a Chuppa built by Jack and his grandfather. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, we enjoyed strawberry shortcake from a local bakery.

Giving Their Guests a Thoughtful Welcome with Goody Bags and Personal Letters

Each of our guests was greeted with a welcome goody bag that included Texas snacks, water, electrolytes, Advil, and bug spray. We also handwrote a letter to each guest. Our family and friends have shared many of life’s monumental moments with Jack and me, and we wanted to show our appreciation for their presence during our wedding weekend.

Adding a Personal Touch Through a Special DIY Project

Jack and his grandfather crafted the Chuppa we stood under during the ceremony, symbolizing our first home together. This personal touch added deep significance to the moment. Additionally, Jack and I wrote our vows, which allowed us to express our feelings and commitments meaningfully and uniquely.

Cherished Moments from Their Collective Retreat at Montesino Ranch Wedding Reception’s Lively Atmosphere

The most memorable part of the wedding day was the dinner and reception. Jack and I loved the moment we walked into the main tent and greeted all our guests. The atmosphere was lively, connected, and warm. We had a great time sharing a meal with our favorite people and ending the night with lots of dancing.

The Importance of Personal Connection and Choosing Vendors That Align with Your Vision

Before planning, sit down with your partner and decide how you want to feel on your wedding day. Think about the emotions you want to experience, who you want to share the day with, and the atmosphere. Once you’ve set your intentions, make sure every decision aligns with them. I’m most proud of how our wedding weekend truly represented Jack and me. We gathered our closest loved ones in a setting where we felt most at ease. Choosing vendors who matched our vision was crucial. For our small, intimate wedding, we focused on selecting vendors with excellent businesses and warm, engaging personalities, as their energy would enhance the experience for everyone.

Bringing Their Favorite Vacation Vibe to Their Collective Retreat at Montesino Ranch Wedding

Our choice of wedding venue was inspired by one of our favorite vacations to Zion National Park. We stayed at an upscale glamping retreat in Virgin, UT, where we enjoyed the stunning surroundings while being comfortable in a beautifully curated space. We wanted to bring those feelings to our wedding weekend, so we chose Collective Retreats—Hill Country for our glamping-style celebration.

Creating Their Own Wedding Style with Comfy Outfits and Unique Personalized Details

It was important to Jack and me that we stayed true to ourselves on our wedding day. We chose simple, comfortable outfits that reflected our style. I wore a minimal dress from Reformation, while Jack selected a natural-colored suit from Jos A. Bank. To add a personal touch, I styled my dress with a western hat and veil inspired by the classic movie scene from The Parent Trap. My veil and hat were a bit DIY; I couldn’t find what I wanted online, so I bought some tulle from Joann Fabrics and took it to Goorin Bros on South Congress in Austin, TX, where hat maker Angie worked her magic.

Everything to Know About Premarital Counseling

Keep reading for everything to know about premarital counseling. Image by Carmen Lopez

If you and your partner are seriously thinking about a future together, it’s natural to start discussing what that future might look like. But how can you be sure you’re both truly on the same page and ready to build a life together? One helpful approach is premarital counseling. This type of couples therapy can be incredibly valuable as you prepare for marriage, offering a safe space to explore important topics and deepen your understanding of each other.

While many engaged couples spend a lot of time planning their wedding day, they might overlook the importance of preparing for a successful marriage. Love is essential, but knowing how to navigate difficult conversations and ask the right questions to truly understand each other’s backgrounds and expectations is equally important.

Premarital counseling can help you develop the skills to communicate effectively, manage expectations, and build trust. To help you along the way, we’ve created this guide to make the process easier and ensure you’re both ready to learn more about your future together.

What Is Premarital Counseling?

Premarital counseling is therapy designed specifically for couples who are planning to marry. It helps partners understand each other better, work through potential issues, and build a strong foundation for their future life together. During these sessions, a counselor will guide you through important discussions, helping you both explore your expectations, values, and long-term goals.

How Long Is Premarital Counseling?

The duration of premarital counseling can vary depending on your needs and the counselor’s approach. On average, it typically takes eight to twelve sessions, which can span from 8 to 12 weeks up to 3 to 6 months. Each session usually lasts about an hour. Some couples may require fewer sessions, while others might benefit from additional time. The key is to proceed at a pace that feels comfortable for both of you and ensures that all important topics are covered.

What to Expect from Premarital Counseling

When you start premarital counseling, you can expect a mix of structured activities, open discussions, and guided exercises. Here’s what generally happens in these sessions:

  • Assessment: The counselor will begin by assessing your relationship through questionnaires or conversations. This helps identify your strengths and areas that may need attention.
  • Goal Setting: You’ll discuss your individual and shared goals for the future. This helps ensure that both partners are aligned on important life decisions.
  • Skill Building: You’ll learn communication and conflict-resolution skills. These tools are essential for handling disagreements and maintaining a healthy relationship.
  • Exploration: You’ll explore various topics like finances, family planning, and roles in the relationship. This ensures that both partners clearly understand and agree on these key areas.

Benefits of Premarital Counseling

Premarital counseling offers several benefits that can help strengthen your relationship:

  • Enhanced Communication: Learn how to express your thoughts and feelings more effectively and listen to your partner’s perspective.
  • Conflict Resolution: Gain skills to resolve conflicts in a healthy way, which can prevent minor issues from escalating into major problems.
  • Clarity on Expectations: Understand each other’s expectations and how to meet them, leading to a more harmonious partnership.
  • Stronger Bond: Deepen your connection and commitment to each other, laying a solid foundation for a lifelong relationship.

Premarital Counseling Questions

During premarital counseling, you might explore questions like these:

  • What are our long-term goals, and how do they align?
  • How do we handle stress and conflict, and how can we improve our coping strategies?
  • What are our financial expectations, and how will we manage them together?
  • How do we envision our roles in the relationship, and what are our responsibilities towards each other?
  • What are our views on family planning and parenting, and how do we plan to address these in the future?

How Effective is Premarital Counseling?

Premarital counseling strengthens your relationship and lays a solid foundation for a successful marriage. This process allows you and your partner to address important matters before they become potential problems. Research suggests that couples engaging in premarital counseling often experience greater relationship satisfaction. A classic 2003 study in the journal Family Relations found that couples who had completed some form of premarital counseling experienced a 30 percent increase in marital satisfaction compared to those who hadn’t undergone such counseling.

Many couples only seek therapy when their relationship is already in crisis, which can make communication and progress more difficult. Premarital counseling allows you to openly discuss crucial topics without the pressure of an immediate issue, making it easier for you and your partner to collaborate on solutions.

Key Considerations

It’s essential to recognize that while the primary goal of counseling is to build a stronger connection, it can also uncover deep-seated differences that might be challenging to resolve. For instance, you might discover conflicting views on critical topics like whether to have children, how to manage finances, or even differing expectations about career ambitions and family roles. These discussions may reveal fundamental incompatibilities that need careful consideration before moving forward.

Getting Started

If you’re considering premarital counseling, you and your partner must be willing to participate. If one of you is hesitant, explain why it’s important and what you hope to achieve. You can find a counselor through recommendations from friends, family, or professionals, and you’ll need to find a time and place that works for both of you to attend the sessions together.

Premarital counseling is a great way to set a solid foundation for a happy and lasting marriage. By having important discussions and learning how to communicate effectively before you tie the knot, you and your partner can build a stronger bond.
