Romantic French-Inspired Carondelet House Wedding in Los Angeles

August 25, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Tanya and Bernard’s Carondelet House wedding combined classic vintage with a timeless modern touch. Inspired by French noir films, the couple chose a venue that fit their style and personalities: a hidden 1920’s villa in downtown LA with an urban flair. We love the dreamy natural light and architectural details like fireplaces and courtyards. The metallic bridesmaids’ dresses inspired a color scheme of platinum, blush, and silver for a classic feel without being too traditional. Floral designers Bloom of Time created a romantic and moody spring aesthetic with deep green foliage and dusty colors while photographers Joel & Justyna captured the couple in their romantic venue and outside in LA’s cool downtown.

The Couple:

Tanya and Bernard

The Wedding:

Carondelet House, Los Angeles

My over all look was inspired by a more classic vintage vibe. We were watching a lot of nior French films at the time and we felt that with a modern touch it would look timeless in photos. My dress was a mermaid shape so that gave a great silouhette. I also had a head piece that I found randomly in downtown LA.

Bernard started crying when we did our first looks. It was so cute. I also had a panic attack while walking down the isle and I started yelling at our guests not to look at me. It was pretty funny.

The colors were chosen because of the bridesmaids dresses I fell in love with. They were a shiney Platinum. So things that went with it were blush, silver and lots of neutrals. Deep green foliage and dusty colors to go with the moody asthetic.

The day before the wedding I picked up my custom wedding band. And boy was it ugly. My sister stepped in and let me use her 20 year anniversary ring as my something borrowed. It ended up working out just fine.

We loved the photography so much. Our favorite vendors by far. Joel and Justyna did such an amazing job capturing the day. So patient and professional. We’d get married again just to work with them again.

Bernard and I had gone to a wedding there a few years back and when we took one look at the place we fell in love and knew that would be the place we got married one day. The location is definitely a hidden gem. We overall wanted something romantic, springy and moody. With a classic touch without being too traditional. We really just chose a place that had it all ready to go for us.

August 24, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

From dominating the home décor industry to inspiring influencers worldwide, mid-century modern style can now be found in almost every aspect of our lives – including weddings! We can’t get enough of this trend’s eclectic retro vibes, so you can imagine our excitement when we started to see mid-century modern details popping up in some of our favorite weddings. Mid-century modern style is easy to channel with any wedding style due to its mix-and-match nature, so read on to discover our 6 favorite ways to incorporate mid-century modern decor in your wedding!

1. Modern Greenery

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to refresh your wedding with mid-century modern style is by adding modern greenery. You can offer your wedding trendy, outdoorsy vibes by scattering broad leaves, textured ferns, and potted fiddle-leaf fig trees among your wedding’s floral design! A greenery-forward design can be used in everything from your bouquets to your lounge areas, so speak to your florist about this easily-achieved trend.

2. Eclectic Minimalist Design

Couples planning modern weddings usually strive for minimalist decor vibes, but in order to achieve mid-century modern wedding style, an extra element of flair is needed to convey the trend. Enter: eclectic minimalist design! This design style incorporates modern trends like metallic details and industrial spaces with old-school elements and quirky, unexpected decor. To achieve eclectic minimalist vibes, try pairing your cool, modern lounge area furniture with fun vintage knick knacks from a thrift store!

3. Tea-Length Wedding Dresses

As you’ve probably gathered from its name, mid-century modern pulls a lot of inspiration from retro 1950s and 1960s styles. If you want to go the extra length to convey this trend, consider wearing a tea-length wedding dress! There’s nothing quite as elegant and cool as a tea-length dress’s shorter hemline, plus it would be the ultimate style statement that ties together your wedding’s mid-century modern wedding decor.

5. Hairpin Legs

Hairpin legs are one of our favorite ways to incorporate mid-century modern vibes at your wedding. As one of the most sought-after mid-century modern details, retro hairpin legs are the perfect way to pull your mid-century modern look together. You can DIY this trend by adding hairpin legs to practically any piece of furniture, or if you’re borrowing items from a rental company, ask them if they have any details with hairpin legs!

6. Retro Mixed Seating

The key to channeling mid-century modern vibes is to combine old and new decor elements. What better way to convey this than with retro mixed seating? You can achieve this look by using mixed ceremony and reception seating, such as long benches mixed with chairs, lounge pillows, and poufs, or setting up a reception lounge area where you can let your creative side go wild! If you’d love to incorporate this style but your venue only offers one type of chair, consider hiring a vintage rental company to help you mix up your seating options.

You’ll Love the Stylish Moody Color Palette in This Stones of the Yarra Valley Wedding

August 24, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Ashleigh and Darren’s moody Stones of the Yarra Valley wedding is giving us all the heart eyes. We can’t get enough of Ashleigh’s dreamy Suzanne Harward bridal gown, the jewel tone florals by I Heart Flowers, and the actual jewels Ashleigh is wearing by Stephanie Browne – hello statement earrings. These romantic details were the perfect addition to their stylish wedding. Free the Bird was there to capture these details and the love these two have for each other.

The Couple:

Ashleigh and Darren

The Wedding:

Stones of the Yarra Valley, Melbourne, Australia

Being a winter wedding in the Yarra Valley, warmth was a big factor. A long sleeve dress was always on the cards, but to find something as beautiful as the Bell gown by Susanne Harward was a dream. It was dramatic, elegant and so comfortable. Because it was quite a simple dress in fabrication, statement earrings were a must. These gold and ruby earrings from Stephanie Browne will be something we hold onto forever.

The most memorable moment for both of us, the first moment that we saw each other in the Chapel was a feeling that we cannot explain. People had told us about ‘that moment’ during the planning, but we didn’t expect it to be such an overwhelming moment.

We had an incredible celebrant, Lara, who guided us through this process. She had so many great examples of how to create a ceremony that is meaningful to you. It was important to us that rather than readings, we had words that were actually about us as a couple. Lara spent a lot of time getting to know us as a couple, and did a fantastic job of taking all of our loved ones through our ‘story’. In addition to that, we had our super talented brother in law Mark playing acoustic guitar during the procession and after the ceremony, and Darren‘s sister Brittany was terrific as our MC throughout the day. Having family involved with these special roles made it all feel so much more personal.

Jai from Free the Bird was an absolute dream to work with. We are both a bit awkward in front of the camera, but he was unobtrusive, so we just acted like ourselves while he worked his magic. A lot of our family commented on how great he was, never getting in the way of the day, but somehow capturing all the most magic and intimate moments. We have so many stunning photos, we don’t know how we will narrow it down for our album.

We both like quite dark, wintery colours, so when we chose a June wedding date, we very quickly went towards burgundies, charcoal and deep greens. Not only do they bring a warmth to the chill of winter, there is something very romantic and elegant about these tones to us.

Don’t get caught up in everything that you think you “should do”. Choose the things that are most important to you (for us it was food, wine, music) and focus on those. It is so easy to get caught up in long list of possibilities, but it made the whole process so much more stress free and enjoyable by not worrying about things that did not matter to us. We just wanted to make sure all of our guests had a great time, and we quickly realized that not many people notice all the small details so there was no point to get stressed by them.
