You’ll Love This Incredible Upcycled Wedding at Red Barn Weddings

July 29, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Kelsey and Joel’s upcycled wedding at Red Barn Weddings was the definition of a triple-threat: a truly sentimental location, a breakfast-for-dinner reception menu, and eco-friendly décor. This sweet couple tied the knot in the field where Joel proposed the year before then partied with their favorite people in the Kelsey’s childhood home, which her parents have transformed from a sheep farm to a rustic wedding venue! They filled the wildflower field with chairs that they found online and collected from friends, and used other upcycled and DIY pieces, such as trunks, wooden reels, and rustic signage, to round out the décor. The couple also admits that breakfast foods are at the core of their relationship, so they hired The Waffle Experience to set up a fantastic waffle bar for their guests and the Sweet Dozen to provide donuts, coffee, and milk for the late-night partying. Alyssa Luzaich Photography masterfully captured every sweet, sentimental, and stylish moment of this beautiful California wedding!

Our biggest advice is to ask for help! It takes an army to plan a wedding. We are so thankful for our family, friends, and neighbors for coming together and helping us with our wedding. There is no way we could have done it all on our own, and it was so special to have everyone involved.

We tried to DIY anything and everything! When I say it takes an army to plan a wedding, it takes an army to DIY. I decided I really wanted to have mismatched chairs in the field at our ceremony. So, my sweet mom and I started collecting chairs from the side of the road and the “free” section on Craigslist. We literally had friends and neighbors drop chairs off at our house after they heard we were collecting chairs for the wedding. I think we ended up with a total of 150 chairs in our garage. We also found some (hideous) red pews on Craigslist. My mom reupholstered and painted all 16 of them! They ended up being one of my favorite parts of the ceremony setup.

For both of us, our ceremony was one of the most memorable parts of the day. Standing in a field of wildflowers, surrounded by our closest family and friends, getting married. It’s a moment we will cherish forever. We both wrote our own vows and hearing them for the first time that day was so special. We prayed and did communion together right after saying our vows, grounding our marriage in our faith, which was something that was so important to us.

The gorgeous field where we had our ceremony is actually where Joel proposed to me a year earlier. The field belongs to a family friend and is literally just a hay field (not exactly your typical venue). But, while we were planning and dreaming about where we wanted to get married, there was nowhere more special to us than that field. The owners graciously said yes and we are so thankful! We wanted our ceremony to be simple and beautiful, and the field was exactly that.

The barn where we held our reception is actually at my childhood home! My parents have worked so hard transforming our previously working sheep barn into a gorgeous wedding venue. It was so special to work with my parents to create our reception — they put so much work into the place! I wanted our reception to feel minimal, open, and modern, and the barn was perfect for that. We didn’t need much to fill the already gorgeous space, and it was so special to have our wedding in the place I had grown up.

Joel and I like to say we fell in love over breakfast. That’s how we first became friends in college and it’s become kind of a sacred thing for us ever since. So it was only natural that we decided on breakfast for dinner for our wedding day menu! We worked with The Waffle Experience to create the most amazing waffle bar with fresh liege waffles, lemon curd, maple syrup, chocolate chips, coconut flakes and, of course, eggs & bacon. The whole thing was a dream! We finished the night off with our other true love in life: donuts. We had the cutest donut truck come in from Sweet Dozen, and they served our guests donuts, coffee, and milk the rest of the night. It was a meal full of our favorite things, and we had so much fun sharing that with our guests!

Moody Vintage Malibu Wedding at Calamigos Ranch

July 29, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

No matter how many times we see it, our hearts skip a beat when moody fall color palettes and vintage décor come together as perfectly as in this Calamigos Ranch wedding! Desiree and Alex stayed true to their respective personalities — a Fall lover and an old soul — and the combination was prettier than we could have ever dreamt up! The couple chose the venue’s Oak Room, which featured an outdoor ceremony space with a natural stone waterfall backdrop and a rustic reception pavilion draped with white linens and twinkle lights. Every inch of this venue was decorated like a work of art with custom signage, rich linens, and lush florals. As if it couldn’t get any better, the bride floored us with a sexy-yet-classy lace Berta Bridal gown and glamorous makeup. Krista Ashley Photography went above and beyond capturing every gorgeous detail, as well as the couple’s romantic portraits throughout the grounds.

We chose Calamigos Ranch because that’s where we went on our first date. Calamigos was the only venue that we looked at and, after touring it, it just felt right. After we chose our venue, we picked our theme by integrating all of our favorite things. My husband is an old soul and loves anything vintage. My favorite time of year is fall, and I love anything that is dark and moody.

For the place settings, I purchased thick velvet ribbons, iron stamped each of our guests’ initials at the top of the ribbon, and placed them under everyone’s plates. The color of these ribbons indicated what each person was going to be eating: forest green for vegetarian, gold for chicken, and burgundy for beef.

Our wedding favors were hand-poured clove and cinnamon candles in gold tins. One of my dear friends made them from scratch for us.

My sister-in-law and I also made all of our wooden signs. We had so much fun staining the wood ourselves! Hilary is an artist so she did all of the hand lettering herself.

Classy Florida Destination Wedding at Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club

July 28, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Dara and Lincoln’s wedding at Florida’s Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club proves that, sometimes, state-side destination weddings can be the best way to go! With family scattered across the country, the couple decided to pick a city in which nobody lived but that was easy to get to and that the bride was familiar with (after years of vacationing there with her family). The result was an elegant waterfront wedding that was as classy as it was laid-back. Although the ceremony and reception both took place inside the club, the copious amounts of natural light and the waterfront backdrop made it feel like it was right on the beach. Alisha Siegel Photography and second shooter Sarah Kuszelewicz Photography masterfully captured every lovely detail of this wedding, especially the magical confetti drop on the dance floor at the end of the night!

Dara and Lincoln

The Wedding:

Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club, Miromar Lakes, Florida

Because we live in New York and our families are in Chicago and Los Angeles, we figured we might as well all go to a completely different city. We decided on Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club because we knew it so well. My family had been vacationing down there for years, so we knew the venue and the staff. It was like planning a destination in a place you’re completely familiar with (kind of cheating).

We had so much fun with our photographers, Alisha and Sarah. They just made everyone totally at ease. I had seen their work before, so I just completely trusted they would get amazing shots, and they did. The results were a mix of dynamic bridal party photos (yes, they do exist), gorgeous, artsy takes of the venue (yes, we seriously might just frame the super cool shots of palm trees they took), and in-the-moment action shots (confetti galore).

Processionals – “He Needs Me” by Harry Nilsson and “Dear Theodosia” by Lin Manuel Miranda
