Everything You Need To Know About Planning An Italy Destination Wedding

October 18, 2022 | riley

It’s no secret that Italy is one of the most beautiful countries on Earth–which is why it’s no surprise that it’s one of the hottest spots for destination weddings. With incredible architecture, delectable cuisine, stunning coastlines, and vineyards galore, it has something for everyone. But like with every other kind of destination wedding, there’s a lot that goes into planning.

From ensuring that you’re legally married to choosing the perfect venue for you and your significant other, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about hosting an Italy destination wedding. So pour yourself an Aperol Spritz and get ready to get to planning.

Top Cities For An Italy Destination Wedding

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is arguably one of the most popular destinations for an Italy wedding. Villages like Postino, Sorrento, and Ravello boast scenic backdrops, incredibly blue waters, colorful buildings, and a wide variety of venues–both luxurious and budget-friendly. And because all the villages are right next to one another, it’s easy to hop around if you’re looking to explore all the Italy coastline has to offer.

Puglia

Located in southern Italy, Puglia has a little bit of everything. Beautiful weather, Instagram-worthy ocean views, a laidback atmosphere, and medieval architecture make it the perfect spot for anyone searching for a traditional Italian affair.

Tuscany

If you and your significant other are big wine drinkers, you’re sure to love Tuscany. With hundreds of villas to choose from, everywhere you tie the knot in Tuscany will be met with views of rolling green hills. The delicious wine and food are just an added bonus. Not to mention the fact that there are two major international airports nearby, so it’s easy to get to and navigate once there.

Lake Como

Although Lake Como is a little more difficult to get to, it’s worth it once you see the scenery. Littered with beautiful villages like Bellagio, Menaggio, and Tremezzo, Lake Como is home to some of the most beautiful views in all of Italy. It has many larger venues for those having big weddings, but it’s also known for its small villas ideal for micro weddings and elopements. And what’s more magical than a boat ride at sunset after saying “I do?”

Rome

We know that not everyone is looking for oceanfront weddings. If you’re more interested in a city wedding full of culture and rich heritage, Rome is the city for you. It has a never-ending list of historical monuments that date back thousands of years, along with lush gardens and incredible restaurants.

Best Time Of Year For An Italy Destination Wedding

The weather in Italy can vary drastically depending on the region. However, most weddings in Italy take place from April to October. This is when the temperature is the mildest, with plenty of sunshine. If you are more inland, it can get warm during the summer, so it’s best to look at your particular destination.

Because of this popularity with tourists, these months also happen to be peak season, which means less availability for venues, vendors, and lodging, and higher pricing. If you want to save a little money, consider the shoulder seasons, right before and after the summer. Just be mindful that you may be met with chillier temperatures and rain.

FAQs

What Does An Italy Destination Wedding Cost?

Because traveling to Italy is more expensive than other destinations, Italian destination weddings are typically cheaper because they tend to be smaller–though this is not always the case. The overall cost is anywhere from €20,000 – €35,000. However, take this number with a grain of salt. It truly depends on how many guests you plan to have, where the wedding takes place, etc.

It’s also wise to remember that the euro is worth less than the USD, which means things will cost a little more. To help you stay on budget, check out our free budget planning tool, where you can track all of your spending during the planning process

What Costs Should You Cover For Your Guests?

As with any other destination wedding, the costs you cover for your guests are entirely up to you and your significant other. Typically your guests are in charge of paying for their own airfare, lodging, food, etc. Because of this, your guest list may end up trimming itself naturally. Don’t be offended if people can’t make it for financial reasons.

The one thing that we do recommend is setting up a hotel block for your guests. This gives them a discounted rate at a hotel near the venue so they can save a little money and be close to all the fun.

When Should You Send Out Save The Dates & Invites?

If you’re hosting a destination wedding, it’s crucial to send out save the dates as soon as possible. Ideally, this would fall about eight to twelve months before the big day. After that, you’d want to send out invitations about six months before the wedding. This ensures that they have plenty of time to plan accordingly.

When Should You Begin Booking Your Vendors?

The earlier you book your vendors, the better. If you’ve had your eye on a particular vendor for some time now, reach out to them ASAP to ensure they’re available for your date. And don’t be afraid to bring a vendor from home if they’re willing to travel. Just remember that you will have to pay for their travel expenses.

Should You Hire A Wedding Planner?

We’re firm believers that wedding planners are vital to help keep wedding stress at bay–especially when planning a destination wedding. They are familiar with the location, its vendors, the legal requirements to tie the knot in Italy, and know tips and tricks that can save you money in the long run. Legal Requirements For An Italy Destination Wedding

There are a lot of legal requirements that one should keep in mind when planning an Italy destination wedding. That’s why many people choose to tie the knot in their home country before they jet off and have a symbolic ceremony. However, if you are looking to legally marry in the country, you need some documentation:

  • A valid passports
  • Birth certificates
  • Divorce papers or death certificates, if relevant
  • An affidavit sworn before a consular office in your home country
  • An Atto Notorio signed by two witnesses (can’t be family members)
  • A declaration of intent to marry

If you’re planning on having a religious ceremony in a church, you also need further documentation. You must also incorporate a civil ceremony if it’s a non-Catholic religious wedding before you can celebrate in a house of worship.

Sound like a lot to keep up with? We know. That’s why many people choose to get married at home before they do so in Italy. Our advice is to research your destination’s legal requirements early in the planning process to ensure you have everything you need. This is another reason planners are so helpful.

Ways To Incorporate Italian Culture Into Your Wedding

No Gold

If you’re planning on saying “I do” in Italy, they suggest not wearing gold (beyond your ring) on your wedding day. The Italians believe that it brings bad luck to the couple.

Throwing Rice

You may have heard of guests throwing rice at the couple as they make their way down the aisle after pledging their love to one another, but did you know that originated from the ancient Romans? It was thought to bring fertility, wealth, and good luck to the newlyweds. It’s a practice that’s still around to this day.

Confetti and Bomboniere

Italian confetti is not what you likely think it is. Rather than small shreds of paper that you throw when celebrating, Italian confetti is candied almonds handed out as a wedding favor at the end of the night. When placed on the table in a small bag or box, it’s known as a bomboniere. Tradition says that confetti should be given away in odd numbers–three, five, or seven pieces per guest.

La Tarantella

La Tarantella is a popular Italian folk dance involving guests holding hands in a circle and moving clockwise until the music speeds up and they change directions. What was once thought to cure symptoms of a spider bite is now performed to wish the couple good luck in their future together.

Millefoglie Italian Wedding Cake

While Italy doesn’t have a traditional wedding cake, there is a dessert they love to eat when celebrating, known as the millefoglie (aka “1000 layers”) cake. This cake is made of layers of puff pastry filled with cream and topped with fresh berries and powdered sugar.

We know that nailing a budget down for your Italy destination wedding can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve broken it down for you and created a free budget spreadsheet so that you can keep track of your expenses and have the wedding of your dreams.

Personalizing Their Bird’s Eye Cove Farm Wedding By Including Their Loved Ones

We incorporated our family in many different ways. Our sweet little Louisa walked down the aisle before me. Chris got down on one knee, gave her a ring pop, vowed his unconditional love and protection, and asked her if he could marry her mommy. My dad had just rebuilt a 1950’s Chevy delivery van and I shocked him by asking if he would drive us to the altar in his new wheels. He was so, so excited! It was an extraordinary father-daughter moment. Growing up, my mom was a superwoman. She was our rock and our world. Even when I was in my teens, I always knew I wanted both my parents to walk me down the aisle. So my dad drove us up to the altar, where my mom was waiting for us, and I got to walk with them, hand in hand, to my fiancé waiting for me in front of an old barn to say I do.

Writing Their Own Vows Was Difficult But Worth It

The most memorable part of the day for me would, hands down, be saying my vows out loud to Chris. It was so unbelievably emotional. So powerful and magical. It brought up such intense feelings and memories and filled my heart with gratitude and love for the man I was about to marry. My vows didn’t come to me easily. I tried to write them weeks in advance but could never put thought to paper. It wasn’t until the night before that all the words came pouring out of me, and truthfully, they were the best vows I could have ever written.

Honoring Loved Ones Who Have Passed With The Bridal Fashion

My late fiancé Clinton (before Chris) passed away almost six years ago. Clinton is tethered to me in a way I can’t explain. He is such an important part of my existence and I am the person Chris fell in love with because of Clinton. I just needed to have a piece of him with me on my wedding day. In honor of Clinton, I wore his great aunt’s light pink double-layered pearl necklace. Putting this on was heartbreaking and mending at the same time. It’s a moment that means so much to me, and I will never forget it. Also, the bracelet wrapped around my bouquet belonged to my husband’s mom, who passed away when Chris was only three years old. This bracelet was given to me by Chris’ godmother, and it’s one of my most treasured belongings. Not having my mother-in-law in my life has left so many holes in my heart and world. I gripped that bracelet and my bouquet as if I was holding her hand. It felt like she was beside me, giving me all the love and comfort I needed and wanted that day. I’ve never met her, but I love her so deeply.

Maximizing Time With Loved Ones By Extending The Celebration

We rented the most extraordinary, jaw-dropping Airbnb in our hometown, which was perfect! Because we didn’t go right back to everyday life, it’s like we got to continue our wedding celebrations, and to top it off, we had our daughter and family members. That meant so much to us there. It was the best decision.

Embracing Being A Pregnant Bride

At first, I was confused about how I felt being eight months pregnant with our second child on our wedding day. It’s something I never dreamt of or envisioned for my wedding. But now, it’s one of my favorite parts. I am so in love and obsessed that our son was there, in my belly, and that I was a glowing pregnant mama bride. I couldn’t imagine it any other way now and just thinking about it makes me feel so smitten.

A Surprise Proposal On The Day Of Their Bird’s Eye Cove Farm Wedding

Chris proposed to me on our wedding day. We have a young daughter together and are expecting our second. Because the diamond for my ring was in Ontario and wouldn’t arrive until two days before the wedding, he couldn’t propose sooner. I had no idea that this was happening–that he was waiting on an heirloom diamond for my engagement ring. The morning of our wedding day, I got called out to the lower balcony of our Airbnb, where Chris was waiting for me. At first, I was confused, and then it all hit me. How could I be so nervous when we were already getting married? But I was. My heart started beating out of my chest as he got down on one knee and made me the funniest and sweetest promises for life.

How All The Details Of Their Griffin House Wedding Came Together

The vibe of our wedding came together throughout the planning process, but we knew we wanted to it to feel dreamy, romantic, enchanting, and elegant—unique to us. We knew that a destination wedding would make this occasion extra special and a fun vacation for our family. We looked online for about two weeks at venues across the country, but nothing spoke to us. And then Ab looked on Instagram and found The Griffin House in less than five minutes and nothing else even compared. The venue is absolutely stunning on its own, so we wanted to play off the natural elements around the property and feel authentic to the PNW. Our guest count also helped us make the vibe more romantic and intimate, as we could focus on ourselves and visit with our loved ones throughout the night. Ab and I have a special place in our hearts for discos, so we absolutely had to have disco balls in the reception tent. That got everyone out on the dance floor having a blast!

Making The Unpredictable Weather Work For Them

We had a few big surprises that day, and they made the moments truly magical. First was the rain, and although everyone would’ve expected us to panic, we were oddly calm and just enjoyed the weather. We do love the rain on normal days. PNW rain is more of a light mist, so since it wasn’t ceremony-ruining weather but we were prepared for it to go throughout the day. We had clear umbrellas for all our guests, which made for beautiful photos. The drizzle of the rain made it look extra dreamy and like it was straight out of a fairytale.

Proudly Showcasing Their Love And Baring Their Hearts To Each Other Through Their Vows

We’re most proud of how our vows turned out and how our love showed through to everyone. We could feel everyone looking at us with tears in their eyes and love in their hearts for us. It’s been a difficult road for two queer women growing up in the south, especially having the same name. But we persevered and got to be a representation of true love. We played rock, paper, scissors to decide who went first, which was another detail that made it unique to us (that’s how we always decide things). We both cried at our own and each other’s because we poured our hearts out to one another in front of everyone we love. Lastly, we proudly marked our love by combining our last names to make a new one together, her maiden name being Clark and mine being Nelson. We’re now the Clarksons.

Working With An Experienced Vendor Team To Bring To Life The Celebration They’ve Always Envisioned

We wanted the details to be special and mean something, and I think we were able to accomplish that. And working with the most amazing vendors brought everything to the next level. Our advice for couples who have just started their wedding planning journey is to keep your love at the center of everything you do during this process- and in life, for that matter! Jokes aside, it can be a stressful process if you take it too seriously and stress over details. Remember that the whole point is to just get married and be with your love. As long as you two leave as happily married, all went well.

Heartwarming Surprises That Made Their Griffin House Wedding Even More Special

The surprise came when I walked down the aisle, the rain stopped, and the sun came out. My mom and aunt had been praying to my Grandma all morning, asking her to be present at our ceremony from Heaven. Although I’m not religious, I felt in my heart that it was her giving us her blessing. Another surprise that we will truly never forget was from our DJ. Before our grand exit, our DJ Robby asked our guests to grab our twinkle light sticks and create a circle on the dance floor with us in the middle. He announced we would have one last special slow dance to Adele’s “Make You Feel My Love.” The song started as usual, and then we heard our voices reading our vows from the ceremony only hours before, line by line, over the instrumental bits of the song. Everyone cried happy tears again, especially us, as we soaked in the last moments of our wedding.
