This Musical Groom Serenaded His Bride Before Their Emotional First Look

August 4, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

After writing and perfecting a song for Ayana over the course of four years, Joel surprised her with its debut musical performance right before their first look! Photographer Katch Silva captured the couple’s incredibly emotional first look among other uniquely moving moments at the couple’s chic coastal California venue, Catalina View Gardens. As if we needed to be more in love with this wedding’s style, Ayana’s Berta Bridal gown featured a classic trumpeted silhouette with show-stopping details like an illusion French lace back and an ultra plunging neckline!

The most important part of planning our wedding was structuring the day so that we could really appreciate each big moment without feeling rushed from one thing to the next. It had to feel like a momentous experience for us, and not the completion of an itinerary. Doing a first look, trimming traditions that weren’t important to us (cough, the bouquet and garter toss, cough) and just really streamlining things made it so we could really enjoy our own wedding!

From Joel: I was writing a song for Ayana for four years, and it became a running joke about whether I would ever finish it and play it for her. Secretly, I worked with our photographer and wedding planner to debut the song before our first look. I played it with my back to her with just the glass wall of this beautiful greenhouse between us. Afterward, she gave me a notebook in which she’d written a reason she loved me for every day of the year since we’d gotten engaged – a uniquely Ayana gift. Those few moments were probably the most emotional of the entire day.

Having a wedding planner was absolutely invaluable. It’s a lot of time and work and decision-making with one – we can’t imagine what it would have been like without.

After dinner the sun was setting and we snuck away to a field of grass on the hillside not far from the party. We could hear the music from afar, and started dancing. Our photographer, Katch, caught what we think is the best encapsulation of the day: just us, being goofy and outrageously happy, in a stunningly beautiful place.

We really wanted every detail of the wedding to be immediately recognizable as us. We exchanged a lot of mix CDs when we first met, though even back then it was already outdated technology. As sort of a callback to those early days of our relationship, we gave everyone a mix CD of songs from all the past CDs we’d made each other. We spent an altogether outrageous amount of time picking the songs and the order.

musical-groom-serenaded-bride-emotional-first-look-48

When we think of our most memorable part, of course we think of the first look, vows, toasts, and the hors d’ouerves (the hors d’ouerves!) but looking back what ultimately stands out is the incredible feeling of warmth and support from all of our guests. Everyone you know is celebrating you, and it’s sheer joy to share it with each other.

July 18, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

this-raleigh-wedding-at-the-bridge-club-wows-with-killer-bride-and-groom-style-16

Gold sequined bridesmaid dresses, a burgundy suit on the groom, and the bride’s gorgeous A-line tulle gown are just a few of the seriously killer style choices at Irene and Chris’s Raleigh wedding! Blest Studios captured every sweet moment of Irene and Chris’s wedding, including the incredible feat of capturing couple portraits in the venue’s parking lot between rain downpours. This super heartfelt and quirky wedding at Bridge Club was full of fun surprises, amazing food, and tons of dancing!

Irene and Chris

Our first look was definitely the most memorable moment. We were most excited to see each other first and spend time alone together before the circus of the day.

I just wanted to look and feel beautiful. I loved the color of my dress, I wanted Chris to love it, too. My makeup inspiration was to look as natural as possible. I didn’t care about anything else.

this-raleigh-wedding-at-the-bridge-club-wows-with-killer-bride-and-groom-style-12

We love color and were really going for a modern vibe – so we went there. Our colors were blush, burgundy, rose gold, and grey. Chris and I LOVE color. We knew that we didn’t want to stick to traditional wedding tones. Once we started looking into things – we just let our imagination run and tried to have fun with it.

The rest of our party wore dresses from Rent the Runway and suits from The Black Tux – both rented their items, we wanted our parties to shine and look and feel good as well, we didn’t want them to break the bank to do so.

We LOVE Brett, our photographer. She was amazing. She is funny and easy to talk to. She wore so many hats for us that day. It was rainy. I was stressed. She calmed us and felt like family. Her pictures are amazing and she was just the best!

this-raleigh-wedding-at-the-bridge-club-wows-with-killer-bride-and-groom-style-18

We had a close friend play an electric guitar over Phil Collins for the processional. Chris is a HUGE Phil Collins fan and our friends and family know that. This was a a surprise for them and it made Chris excited. It was weird and quirky. It was funny and set the tone for the night to come.

The photo taken in the parking lot directly after the wedding ceremony is an amazing shot – it basically poured during the entire thing and we had a break in weather and our photographer captured it perfectly.

We chose Bridge Club specifically for the food. We love to eat and wanted the food to be the star of the evening. We didn’t trust any other venue would be able to deliver the way Bridge Club did, we definitely made the right decision.

We also included a fat head of our dog, Lilly. It was a way to include her in our day, she’s a dog and obviously couldn’t be at the venue. But we love her and having our friends take pics with her throughout the night made it special for us.

The Bride and Groom in This Wythe Hotel Wedding Work in Fashion, So You Know It’s Fabulous

July 17, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

wythe_hotel_wedding_brooklyn_photographer_chellise_michael*

It doesn’t get much more chic than a wedding in the heart of Brooklyn, let alone with a bride and groom that are both involved in the fashion industry! Abby and Ryan chose Wythe Hotel as their wedding venue for its old school charm as well as the memories it holds – the happy couple also got engaged there! Abby wore a two-piece Monique Lhuillier gown with a subtle blush skirt and an amazing beaded top for a fresh and unique bridal look. We love how Chellise Michael Photography captured Abby and Ryan’s fashion-forward spirit while keeping the timeless sophistication of New York City in mind.

The Couple:

Abby and Ryan

The Wedding:

Wythe Hotel, Brooklyn, New York

wythe_hotel_wedding_brooklyn_photographer_chellise_michael*

The most important thing to us was to keep things simple and not lose sight of why we were planning a wedding in the first place! It’s really easy to get caught up in napkin colors, chair styles etc., so we tried not to overthink anything and just went with what we liked. At the end of the day, our goal was to throw a really fun party to celebrate our marriage and have all our friends & family members in one place. The details, flowers & cake were all just added perks to the best day ever.

wythe_hotel_wedding_brooklyn_photographer_chellise_michael*

Seeing that we’re both in the fashion industry, our fashion choices were a very fun part of the wedding. I chose a very subtle blush skirt and a delicate lace & beaded top from Monique Lhuillier. It was most important that I felt comfortable and also that my wedding day look felt like “me.”

wythe_hotel_wedding_brooklyn_photographer_chellise_michael*

My gold beaded halo I wore was extra special because my Aunt also wore it at her wedding over 30 years ago.

We chose the Wythe Hotel off the bat, without question. It has always been a special place to us throughout our relationship. We went there on our first Valentine’s Day together, celebrated multiple birthdays, and it also happens to be where we got engaged. So yeah, it’s a pretty special place to us.

The best advice we would give would be to spread out the planning and make little deadlines for yourself so nothing piles on all at once. Our wedding was never overwhelming to plan because we prioritized things accordingly. Also, this sounds so cliché, but have fun with it! We enjoyed every moment of the planning process. You get to pick your favorite things out and taste cake, what’s not to love?

wythe_hotel_wedding_brooklyn_photographer_chellise_michael*

Our photographers Chellise & Michael definitely stood out to us! We had done our engagement pictures with them a few months earlier in Arizona and got to know them pretty well. Aside from being extremely talented photographers, they are the nicest humans ever! They made us feel so comfortable and made the whole process really fun. They even got on the dance floor with us at the end of the night and we all danced and had a great time! The beautiful moments they capture in their photos is what made us hire them in the first place and remains the reason we would recommend them to absolutely anyone.

Ryan: Our first dance was the best part for me. Our first dance song was a cover of The Talking Heads’ This Must Be The Place and has always been Abby‘s and my song. Dancing to it together at our wedding was such a happy, surreal moment – I wish that part could have lasted all night!

Abby: I had so many favorite moments! I would have to say it was when Ryan pulled me aside after the ceremony while the cocktail hour was going on. We had a little toast together and took time to really appreciate the moment. We knew the night was going to go by so fast so it was nice to have that little timeout together.

This Vintage-Inspired Bride and Her Marine Corps Groom Said I Do Along The Pacific Crest Trail

May 3, 2016 | editorial team

Vintage-Inspired Bride-Marine-Corps-Groom-Said-I-Do-Along-Pacific-Crest-Trail-23

Getting married along the Pacific Crest Trail seemed like a no-brainer to Julia and Chase, who both love to hike and think that Julian, California is the most beautiful place in the world. On the day of their wedding, the duo got ready together, Chase wearing his Marine Corps uniform, and Julia wearing a short, open back dress from Bebe. Their photographer Jami Laree trekked up Mount Laguna with them and captured the exact moment they said “I do” next to the cliff’s edge, the whipping wind and fresh air all around.

The Couple:

Julia and Chase

I loved everything about my dress; the lace, the long sleeves, the neckline, the open back! It was everything I ever could have wanted for a short wedding dress. My look was a vintage/bohemian style.

I’ve always liked the vintage look for weddings. With my husband wearing his Marine Corps uniform, I knew we could pull off an awesome vintage vibe!

The most memorable part of the day was getting to our location and looking down hundreds of feet off a cliff, and knowing this is where I’m going to marry the love of my life. It was the perfect representation of our love; beautiful scenic mountains, fresh air and the wind whipping.

We knew it was going to be colder on the mountain, but we didn’t realize how cold! We were all so cold by the end of the ceremony that we could barely move our hands. I thought I was never going to be warm again! But we stuck through it and my husband warmed me up in his arms. It was a big surprise, but it was also a fun adventure!

They had such great ideas and were open to doing whatever the had to, to get the perfect shot! The wedding ceremony on the mountain top was absolutely freezing, but they trooped right through it and didn’t complain once!

October 21, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

For brides, fall style might be limited to a darker lip shade, an autumnal bouquet, or pretty vintage cardigan. Grooms, on the other hand, are the real winners in the fall season because the layering and texture options are endless. Fall fashion may not be every groom’s idea of a good time, but we’re sure these Junebug grooms will inspire stylish, cool outfits for future cool weather weddings.

1. Herringbone, tweed, and wool – As the temperatures get cooler, your outerwear will need to serve as functional, as well as fashionable. Choosing a heavier fabric will keep you warm during those golden hour portraits. Depending on the color palette of your wedding, a sports coat or blazer in chocolate brown, heather gray, or navy blue will be a stylish punctuation to your wedding look as a couple.

2. Seasonal boutonnieres – Just like the rest of the flowers in your wedding will be styled in the spirit of the season, your boutonniere can be crafted from fall flowers. Green, dark red, orange, and yellow are strong fall colors, and your florist can tell you what’s trending in your region this season.

3. Chambray – A chambray shirt is a trendy and casual substitution for your classic oxford shirt. This is the perfect style for a rustic wedding or quirky affair. Wear it with suspenders and a bow tie for a  laid-back wedding, or button up in a blazer and skinny tie for a more formal occasion.

4. Gingham – Ginaham was all over the runways this fall, and now it can make an appearance in your wedding too. Keep the checks small for a sleeker look, or go bigger and bright for a whimsical wedding outfit.

5. Velvet Fall fashion is all about texture, and nothing is softer than a velvet bow tie. Choose a tie in burgundy, navy, emerald, or mustard to add visual warmth to your wedding day look.

6. Plaid – Your favorite fall fashion mainstay can absolutely be incorporated into your wedding attire. Whether you wear a plaid shirt, tie, socks, or pocket square depends on the role you envision the pattern taking in your overall wedding decor. Careful not to clash prints within your own outfit, but get creative when mixing plaids among your groomsmen.

The Goals: We wanted our wedding to be unique to us of course, and because Ben is from the UK, we also tried to incorporate as many British traditions into it as possible. We had a lot of guests coming from out of town, and Ben’s best man flew out all the way from the UK. So we also had to accommodate them and make it extra special.

The Design: We just wanted a cool, rustic and somewhat natural wedding for the guests. Coming up with ideas wasn’t difficult, but at the same time, it was hard to single out exactly what we wanted. We made almost everything we had for our decor. All in all, it was perfect. Once you’ve put in all of that work to create that personal look, and you stand back and see it all put together – that did it for us. Almost every guest told us that they had never been to a wedding that reflected a couple’s personality and captured their essence in such a perfect manner. It was a huge success.

The Look: I have my own style, and that’s what I set out to find – something that was unmistakably ME. I knew that when I saw the dress that I wanted, that would be it, and it was. When I found the perfect Vera Wang dress on a sale rack, I tried it on and everybody just groaned. It was a monstrous thing that didn’t fit me at all, but when it was all pinned into place to fit me, there was no doubt which dress I’d be getting married in. It was perfect. I wanted Ben to cry when he first saw me at the end of the aisle. That’s the moment that every girl dreams of, right? That’s what I was looking for, and boy did I get it.

The Moments: There were so many special moments. Everything was perfect. The ceremony itself was sublime. There was not a single dry eye from any of the guests. I suppose the most precious moment was when we read our vows to each other. They showed our complete devotion to one another; the silence as we read them, and the faces in the crowd said it all. It was a moment of utter bliss.

The Advice: At the end of the day, it is YOUR day. Let your day reflect its true meaning: your love and unity. Finally, don’t scrimp on your photographer. Our’s was the best that we could have possibly found. Rachel Solomon was an absolute diamond. Her style was perfect for what we wanted, and she was so easy to work with.
