Beautiful Washington DC Wedding With A Surprise Meeting

December 4, 2021 | riley

Liv and Mike’s love story came full circle at their beautiful Washington DC wedding at the historic Dumbarton House—where they first met and fell in love. From the special first look, to a romantic ceremony at the unique garden alcove, to the cozy tented reception where guests were served comfort food like pizza, ice cream sundaes and cookie cake—their wedding had a sense of romantic simplicity, ease, and happiness. The couple, with the help of their planner Katie Martin, ensured that every element of their wedding was a direct reflection of their love.

The city has amazing quintessential DC spots so photographer Margaret Wroblewski explored the city with the couple to capture beautiful wedding portraits. The day couldn’t get any better—then they ran into Vice President Kamala Harris. Suffice to say, this was truly an unforgettable moment on the happiest day of their lives. Scroll down to see the incredible photos!

Wedding Advice From The Newlyweds

Throughout the process, it helped us a lot to look at the choices we had to make and just ask ourselves what felt like us. It’s easy to get caught up and think you need all the things but it helped us to check in on our priorities constantly. We also felt so happy that we were able to spend time and talk with every single guest, so we suggest couples make sure they can do that!

Working With Photographer Margaret Wroblewski

Both us and our families loved Margaret! Working with her was so amazing, easy, and comfortable. I highly recommend getting a photographer who knows the area so you can be confident that they’ll guide you to find the best spots.

An Unforgettable Moment On Their Washington DC Wedding Day

When we talk about the most memorable part of our day we think we should say something like the ceremony or first look but honestly, it was when we got to meet Vice President Kamala Harris and the Second Gentleman out in the streets of DC as we were taking pictures!

Meaningful Ways To Include The Family

We had family involved in pretty much everything we did. The groom’s brother was our officiant, the groom’s sister ran all of our music, and our nieces were the flower girls. Our wedding was definitely a family affair and they made it all possible.

Comfort Food Favorites

We had an amazing pizza company cater our wedding. They made the food fresh on site. The biggest hits were the empanada appetizers and artisanal pizzas for dinner. Plus, the ice cream sundae bar was a big hit to go along with the cookie cake.

Unique And Vibrant Micro Wedding

December 3, 2021 | riley

Micro weddings–which started as a way to get married during the pandemic–have turned into a wedding trend that’s here to stay. More couples are ditching the big guest lists and opting for a smaller affair with their closest loved ones, which is exactly what Hanna-Ruth and Tyson did after their summer 2020 wedding was canceled.

With the help of Relics Planning, the two transformed The Cooperage into a wedding venue full of vintage furniture, Turkish rugs, an epic bar, a bright color palette, and plants galore. The music hall’s large windows brought in a ton of natural light, which paired beautifully with the bold florals arranged by Bird & Bumble. The result was a stunning indoor garden-like space. As if that wasn’t cool enough, they also had a dessert table surrounded by disco balls to add a little bit of glam to the day.

So if you’re planning your own micro matrimony, keep scrolling because one look at these photos captured by Maria Campbell Photography will show you that small weddings are far from boring.

A Change Of Plans That Led To A Vibrant Micro Wedding

We were inspired most by–despite the pandemic–having a safe wedding where we could celebrate the next step of our partnership surrounded by the ones we loved most. We originally had plans to marry in June of 2020, and those plans were dashed. Our hopes for October 2020 also fell short. Finding Relics and doing a pop-up wedding brought all of the things we cared most about together and allowed us to have a phenomenal (and safe!) wedding.

Favorite Moments Of The Day

One of my favorite wedding day memories was standing on the balcony trying to avoid Tyson seeing me in my dress. I could see everyone and wave to people, but I had to turn away anytime I saw Tyson because I was ready to happy-cry and ruin my makeup anytime I saw him! My second favorite memory is walking down the aisle with my mom and dad, hearing one of my favorite love songs, and seeing Tyson smiling so hard at the end of the aisle, even with his face mask on. Tyson’s favorite memory is from the end of the vows when we were announced as Mr. & Mrs. Durrell-Johnson and walking back down the aisle while our family clapped and cheered!

Wedding Advice From The Newlyweds

Our advice is to remember that this day is about celebrating you and the person you love most. You’re not going to remember that the color scheme isn’t the one you picked out when you were young, that your nail shape wasn’t what you wanted, or that you were freezing because you chose to get married in February in Wisconsin. All you’re going to remember is that this was the day that you and your partner chose each other in the greatest and most loving way possible. Enjoy your wedding day and take all the pictures you can!

Beautiful Wedding Books From The Art of Etiquette

Wedding books are so much more than just a place to write your vows or have your guests sign their names. Having archival-quality wedding books will make the memories of your wedding day last forever. Yet, these are often an underappreciated aspect of planning your wedding.

After the reception ends and your guests head home, your vow and wedding guest books are often one of the only purchases you’ll keep. Choosing an option that will help preserve your memories is important—but shouldn’t be stressful. Our favorite option for both of these special books comes from our friends at The Art of Etiquette.

Wedding Books Bound to Last

The Art of Etiquette creates guest books built to last. They understand that the written notes from your loved ones will only grow in meaning and value over time. Crafted with attention to detail and exceptional quality, these aren’t just wedding guest books. They’re keepsakes. The archival-quality paper proves it.

They’re created to look beautiful on your wedding day and well beyond. Whether you opt to display them on a bookshelf or delicately on your coffee table, the elegant look will fit any design style.

The Art of Etiquette Is Inclusive

This brand is certified as an LGBTQ+ wedding vendor and is intentional about crafting products and services that will help rewrite the narrative of the wedding industry to embrace all identities and gender spectrums.

This goes beyond a certification—they stand behind it. Their language and messaging are carefully crafted to create a welcoming space. Their blank pages are an invitation to be your own storytellers without bias. While there are lines on the page, there aren’t rules.

Unique Guest Books

Each page in The Art of Etiquette’s Wedding Guest Book is designed to be an engaging opportunity for guests to share their well-wishes, advice, and thoughts on love. This memento isn’t just a place for guests to write their names. Each page includes prompts to share wisdom, insights into marriage, and more.

Part of the thoughtful design of these guest books keeps signatures from being awkwardly lumped together. Each guest can still sign near each other—but with The Art of Etiquette, they’re able to include their own sentiments, thoughtful notes, and even photos for you.

You Should Utilize A Vow Book—Trust Us

Hear us out when we say that your photographer and Future You will thank you for not standing at the altar exchanging your vows while holding a crumpled piece of paper or—worse—your cell phone. Utilizing a beautiful and photo-worthy vow book will upgrade your photos and will also make a unique wedding keepsake for you to keep! This way you avoid accidentally erasing your vows on your phone (it happens) and you don’t have to worry about them ending up lost in a drawer somewhere safe in your home.

The Art of Etiquette takes vow books one step further than most vow book companies and includes an anniversary note for each partner to capture their feelings leading up to the day. Then, you can use the included wax seal to keep it secure until your first anniversary. At that time, you can easily open the note and share how you were both feeling on your wedding day. Add in a bottle of champagne, you’ve got the makings of a meaningful first-year anniversary.

Junebug Tip:

The Art of Etiquette also makes Anniversary Books for you to honor your past, present, and future together. You can learn more about them here.
