July 2, 2022 | riley

While we may be in the midst of summer, we can’t help but dream of fall weddings with dark color palettes, epic wedding fashion–complete with bridal jackets–and moody florals. Although we may have a few more months before these dreams become a reality, The Big Fake Wedding is giving us all of the edgy inspiration at their recent Seattle event. The talented group of vendors came together to create a scene that has us daydreaming of a night by the fire with smooth jazz playing in the background.

From the candle-lit ceremony to the portraits around Pike’s Place to the reception complete with black and burgundy velvet linens and towering florals, no detail was left untouched. Not to mention the oversized balloon arch framing the couple as they exited. If you’re planning your own moody matrimony, you’re going to want to see the magic created by one of the most useful wedding resources out there. Keep scrolling to see how EZER Photo and Natalie Kysar Photography perfectly captured the dramatic day.

Lakeside Summer Camp Wedding with DIY Details

July 2, 2022 | riley

Katie and Scott considered eloping, but when it came down to it, they knew their loved ones had to be there when they said their “I dos.” And what better way to celebrate after having been together for ten years than a lakeside summer camp wedding weekend with the people that helped get them there. Tucked away in picturesque countryside with vintage cabins overlooking the wetlands, Camp Wandawega proved to be the perfect place for a multi-day celebration with fun activities, great food, and relaxed vibes.

With a self-proclaimed DIY queen for a bride, they created a whimsical and nostalgic celebration like a perfectly curated Wes Anderson movie. The bride did it all—from the stationery and signage to the florals and decor. For the ceremony, the couple exchanged vows under a beautiful canopy of trees. It was followed by a tented reception that featured wispy floral arrangements, rustic boho decor, and the romantic glow of candles and string lights. The couple and their guests then danced the night away after the party switched to a silent disco.

The pair definitely pulled out all the stops, and no detail was overlooked when it came to their weekend celebration. From the thoughtful welcome bags and farewell waffle brunch to all the meaningful and personalized elements in between, scroll through these dreamy photos captured by Junebug member Iron + Honey Photography. This lakeside summer camp wedding is filled with clever and creative steal-worthy ideas.

Katie & Scott

The Wedding:

Camp Wandawega, Elkhorn, Wisconsin

How Their Lakeside Summer Camp Wedding Came To Be

I stumbled upon Camp Wandawega on Instagram and instantly became obsessed. I reached out to them before we were engaged and shared my wild idea with Scott when we got engaged. While we were touring it and up in the tree house, he looked at me and said, “Wow. I get it. This is amazing, and I don’t want to get married anywhere else”. We wanted the weekend to celebrate our ten years together with the people who helped get us there. We wanted it to be memorable and different from a traditional wedding where everyone is just going through the motions. The setting allowed everyone to loosen up, and I have a distinct memory of looking around and seeing all of our family and friends mingling and bonding, which was so special.

They Began Their Big Day By Spending Quality Time With One Another And With Their Loved Ones

I think one of the best parts of the day was waking up super early before everyone else on the wedding day and going up in the tree house together and writing the notes we would read to each other at our first looks. This was such a special time that we got to spend together on such a fun but chaotic day. Scott loved jumping in the lake in the morning and playing volleyball and basketball with his friends.

Personalizing The Ceremony Through DIY Decor And Having A Cousin Officiate

Everything at our ceremony was so unique and personalized. I made all the floral arrangements, and we had a special table at the front of the entrance with handmade vellum envelopes with the ceremony details and dried flowers inside for people to throw as we left the altar. On the table, we had our box for cards and photos of all of our parents, grandparents, and loved ones’ weddings to hopefully follow in their footsteps. We had Scott’s cousin as our officiant, and he shared some amazing stories about our relationship, which made it special.

Advice For DIY Couples: Hire A Day-Of Coordinator

Our day-of coordinator was some of the best money that we spent. Madda of Cherry Blossom Events helped make my vision come to life, and without her and her team, I think the day would have been a huge flop. She was amazing, and I recommend every DIY bride to splurge on a coordinator. Don’t let your wedding to-do list overwhelm you. Do one thing every day, and soon that list will disappear. It is such an overwhelming process, but make sure to enjoy it too. Nothing like this will ever happen again in your lifetime.

Why You Should Create A Wedding Email & Consider Getting A Wedding Credit Card

I tell all of our newly engaged friends to make a wedding email. This helps keep everything in one place and helps you share responsibility in the wedding process. Second, I tell everyone to get a shared credit card. This helped us learn to share money, keep all our expenses for the wedding in one place, and got us tons of points we could use after the wedding. We were virtually able to get our honeymoon for “free” with the number of points we accumulated.

Saving Thousands By DIYing The Decor

Everything at the wedding was a DIY project for us—the invitations, decor, signage, and floral arrangements. I made special door hangers with everyone’s name as a hotel would do and a note on the back that said, “do not disturb, partied too hard with the newlyweds.” I am so proud of how unique and memorable our wedding was. I truly surprised myself with how much I was able to do and the thousands of dollars we saved because of it.

Boho Hotel Luna Mystica Elopement

July 1, 2022 | riley

After falling in love with the panoramic mountain views, unique retro campers, and starlit campgrounds of Hotel Luna Mystica, Jimilyn and Kelly decided to return a year later to elope. They took it as a sign to tie the knot at their favorite spot when their Junebug member Maggie Grace Photography was available to document their special day. Sharing a love for travel and adventure, they set out to make their dream elopement a reality in just a week!

With a fresh blanket of snow covering the landscape, the pair kicked off their big day with a fun snowy first dance in their matching sleep shirts. After changing into their effortlessly stylish wedding attire, the couple walked hand-in-hand down the aisle leading to the ceremony circle and stone pillars framing the mountains. They exchanged beautiful heartfelt vows just as the sun was setting behind them.

Because of the spontaneity, the couple pretty much DIY’d every aspect of their celebration—from the dried floral bouquet and boutonniere to the boho-themed tablescape for two at their camper reception. And it reflected their laid-back and carefree style perfectly. An elopement is the most romantic way to make it just about the two of you and every detail of Jimilyn and Kelly’s big day is proof of that. Scroll through these gorgeous photos captured by Junebug member Maggie Grace Photography. This Luna Mystica elopement will have you wanting to adventure to the nearest vintage trailer campground.

Hotel Luna Mystica, Taos, New Mexico

Why A Hotel Luna Mystica Elopement

Hotel Luna Mystica is a quaint little vintage RV park surrounded by the mountains of Taos. Each camper has its own unique personality and name. We stumbled upon this location when planning our first New Mexico trip in 2021 and absolutely fell in love with the homey, welcoming atmosphere and gorgeous mountain views right off our front porch. There is even a ceremony circle, including two large pillar stones and a circle of string lights. When we first saw this spot last year, we both looked at each other and knew we had to get married there.

Eloping Allowed Them To Share Intimate And Personal Vows Freely

The most memorable part of our whole elopement experience was how intimate our ceremony was. We chose to tell only close friends prior and to have no guests outside of our wedding day team. This allowed us to make our day perfect–exactly how we wanted it to be–without any pressure from others. We were able to read each other our own vows and make our unique promises to each other. It also allowed us to be more present in the moment by being able to leave everything from home behind.

Wedding Planning Advice: Create A Day That Truly Represents You And Your Partner

Wedding planning can be overwhelming, but don’t let yourselves lose sight of the most important aspect—celebrating your and your partner’s love for one another. There are no rules. This day is all about you. We are so proud that we eloped and planned every detail of our wedding, including 18 hours of travel in a week! There were a few mishaps, but all of our late nights of planning, crafting, and shopping honestly turned out so unbelievably perfect, and we could not have imagined it all happening any other way.

Junebug Member Maggie Grace Photography Was Their Dream Photographer

We had our dream photographer picked out for a while. Maggie made us feel so comfortable from the moment we met her. She also stayed in a camper on the grounds, close to us. The night Maggie arrived, she made sure to come to our camper for a drink and discuss wedding day plans. During our photography session, she genuinely made everything feel so natural. Some of the most intimate photos she captured were of us simply being ourselves in her presence, and she captured those moments beautifully. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect person to document our special day and definitely feel like we made a friend for a lifetime.

Handmade Details That Made The Elopement Experience Even More Special

Due to our spontaneity, just about every aspect of our wedding was DIY‘d. Before leaving for our trip, many late nights and early mornings consisted of crafting and creating. First, we went to a boutique plant shop with a pick-your-own dried floral bar. We brought home enough florals to make Kelly’s bouquet, my boutonniere, and the accent piece on my hat. We also designed and printed signs and a banner that perfectly fit our aesthetic to decorate our camper. One thing we were excited about was our intimate post-ceremony dinner. We thrifted the perfect dishes and created our place settings, including matching “bride and bride” place cards. It made for many special date nights being able to plan out and put our own decorations together.
