Lovely Vintage Wedding at the Houston Heights Fire Station

September 6, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Influenced by Kinfolk and Geraldine Magazines, Kathrine and Jeff’s vintage wedding at the Houston Heights Fire Station had a modern twist – they fell in love with the venue’s ability to encompass their own aesthetic and vibe. By adding simple decor with a lot of greenery and some blooms, Kathrine and Jeff wanted the venue to shine on its own. There were many personal touches to their day that included Kathrine and Jeff’s vintage wedding rings being their grandparents’ old rings. Joseph West Photography was there as a friend to the couple, but also to photograph one of the most important days of their lives.

The Couple:

Kathrine and Jeff

The Wedding:

Houston Heights Fire Station, Houston, Texas

Hire a wedding planner, even if you do most of the planning yourself. We have no doubt that the smoothness and overall enjoyment of the day was thanks to Maya. She works for Two Be Wed, but we really want to single her out, because she was so wonderful. Easy to work with, responsive, organized. We would definitely recommend working with her. If you can find room in your budget, please don’t put that stress on a family member or friend.

Jeff wore a black tux and paired it with a solid black bow tie from my line, Kathrine Zeren, and styled a vintage white handkerchief as the pocket square.

When it came to choosing a wedding dress, I wanted something that had a vintage feel without being too fussy. It also needed to feel comfortable. I knew that I’d probably be feeling a whole range of emotions the day of, and I wanted the least of my worries to be about my dress.

The whole day was so wonderful, but both our first look and the ceremony were really special. It was nice to have that moment alone with each other before the ceremony, a chance to pause and be quiet amidst all of the madness of the day.

The groomsmen wore dark navy suits with black neckties (also from my line) and vintage white handkerchiefs, each one unique, that we gave to them as part of their wedding party gifts.

My bridesmaids all wore blush-tone dresses of their choice. I’m not a fan of matching bridesmaid dresses, so this was a way for me to create a look that would complement both what I would be wearing as well as the flowers that they would be holding.

The ceremony itself was also just so…beautiful. The rain outside combined with Madeline and Micah’s voices and the flowers all around created such an etherial effect that it was almost breathtaking.

Joseph West, our wedding photographer, was really great. He’s not only one of Jeff’s best friends, but also super talented. Being a wedding photographer himself, Jeff wanted to choose someone he knew he could trust. Joseph did not disappoint.

We wanted something that would be fun and memorable not only for us, but also for our guests. Wanting it to also be reflective of our aesthetic, we chose an older building that would serve as the perfect backdrop and help to create the desired mood without having to add too many decorations. It was also an added bonus that we were able to have both the ceremony and reception in the same place.

Our favors were Jordan almonds & homemade chocolate chip cookies. Kathrine is half Turkish, and it’s somewhat of a tradition to have Jordan almonds at Turkish weddings. Jeff makes the BEST chocolate chip cookies (seriously – the best), and we thought it would be a fun late night snack to give out as the guests left the reception. (It was by far the largest batch of cookies that Jeff has ever made.)

Freshen Up Your Barn Wedding With These 7 Modern Rustic Wedding Decor Ideas

September 5, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

When it comes to wedding styles, modern weddings and rustic weddings have always been the leaders of the pack – so it came as no surprise to us when we started noticing couples combining both styles! Modern rustic weddings are a gorgeous way to express your stylish tastes in a warm and cozy environment. Read on to get inspired with our 7 favorite ways to decorate a modern rustic wedding!

1. Minimalist Barn Venue

It all starts with the venue! Set the tone for your modern rustic wedding with a gorgeous minimalist barn venue. While minimalist barns are often located on a farm and come with built-in rustic vibes, they also echo a lot of the same features that industrial warehouses offer: large epic spaces, versatility, and modern vibes that blend perfectly with a touch of rustic decor.

2. Sun-Drenched Neutral Tones

All of our favorite modern rustic weddings had a major feature in common: sun-drenched neutral tones! From warm ivories to bright whites, the modern rustic style is all about channeling chic vibes with an effortless color palette. This trend can shine in really any aspect of your wedding decor, from furniture to paper details to florals.

3. Modern Metallics

One of our favorite ways to slip some contemporary vibes into a rustic wedding is with modern metallics! When it comes to metallics, a little goes a long way, so pepper in fun metallic details like geometric shapes, vases, and photo frames with the rest of your decor. While any metallic tone would work, we’ve noticed many modern rustic weddings incorporating copper and rose gold details due to their ability to match warm woods and contrast with bright whites.

4. Plenty of Natural Greenery

If there were one modern rustic wedding decor idea to rule them all, it would be natural greenery. Whether it’s a hanging installation, garlands, or just tons of greenery in your bouquets, there’s nothing like natural greenery to pull together a modern rustic wedding vibe! You can never have too much greenery in your floral design.

5. Contemporary-Meets-Vintage Decor

Traditional rustic wedding styling is quite unlike pure modern styling, so when planning a modern rustic wedding, embrace each style’s unique qualities! We love how the weddings featured below blended incredibly contemporary details with vintage elements to create warm and cozy wedding spaces.

6. Rustic Wooden Accents

In our opinion, no rustic wedding is complete without wooden accents! We love how the weddings below blended vintage wooden elements with modern accents. To give your wedding’s rustic wooden accents a modern twist, try pairing them with modern hand-lettering, contemporary shapes, and, of course, tons of greenery.

7. Modern Signage

Modern rustic weddings are all about blending modern details into a rustic space, and using modern signage is a great way to incorporate this trend! From the escort display to the menus, modern signage will refresh your wedding’s decor with a clean aesthetic.

This Obi Obi Hall Wedding is Cool Casual Styling at Its Best

September 5, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Sarah and Scott’s outdoor wedding is full of their cool personal style. After a beautifully casual ceremony outside surrounded by their loved ones, they took the party to Obi Obi Hall where they danced the night away. Choosing to decorate with olive branches, string lights, and candles, Sarah and Scott added to the venue’s natural and outdoorsy aesthetic. Amy Higg Photography captured these lovely details and the joy throughout the day.

The Couple:

Sarah and Scott

The Wedding:

Obi Obi Hall, Queensland, Australia

We went for a casual, natural, and simple style and feel. Since we like a simple and natural look, greenery was the way to go. Even the boutonnières for the men were super simple – just small olive branches. We also have a weakness for Australian native flowers so those were in the bouquets and on our cake. Olive branches (that we got from a local olive farm) were on our arch, in the canoe that had Scott‘s homemade cold brew in it (at the ceremony), on the tables, and most of the signs. They were a great way to get the simple/natural look without costing heaps because we bought those and decorated ourselves so that we would have more money to go to the bouquets. We also had candles throughout – another thing we love and its super affordable.

It was important that the wedding day still felt like us. It was celebrating us as a couple so we didn’t want it to feel like we were showing up to someone else’s day. For us that meant, a casual day with good, hearty food, and all of our friends there to celebrate and party with us.

Our photographer, Amy, was great with helping us plan beforehand with good times for the wedding (to get the best light, which she nailed) and the day of as well. Our ceremony got a late start due to a flat tire on the car that had all of the bridesmaids so we had to move quickly to get the photos done before we lost the light. Amy was so organized and good at directing us all in the most friendly way. We loved it. She is beyond what we expected.

Amy did a great job catching candids, especially of walking back up the hill. But really she just did a great job catching the joy of the day. We especially loved her pictures of our guests as they are laughing (our MC’s did a skit of our love story so there was A LOT of laughing).

Easily our first dance was the most memorable part of the day. We decided to have some fun with it. We didn’t take lessons or anything like that and we picked a rather upbeat song (“Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Swede). He swung me around and we sang to each other and had a good laugh. Some runner ups would be our vows and when we took a little time just the two of us to go and play cornhole when we were at the reception. It was really nice to have even just a few minutes alone amidst all the crowd.
