This Laid-Back Boho Key Largo Wedding Was a Full Weekend of Good Vibes

May 2, 2026 | justine

Anne and David’s Key Largo wedding felt like an open invitation into the life they had already built together. They met during their senior year at the University of Miami—he was a platform diver, she ran track and cross country—and what started off easy and casual eventually turned into something steady. Just a few months after graduating, Anne moved in with David and his roommates without overthinking it. That same instinct carried them through bigger decisions, including a move to the Florida Keys in 2021, where they built a life around the water, their careers, and their dog, Rusty.

So they kept it simple: bring everyone to the Keys, let them settle in, and spend a few days together the way they normally would.

What We Love About This Key Largo Wedding:

  • A full weekend that gave guests time to actually connect before the wedding day
  • A venue that doubled as both the backdrop and the gathering space for everyone
  • A relaxed, boho setup by the water without going over the top
  • Thoughtful details like custom cups and a fishing-inspired seating chart

Letting Guests Settle In Before the Main Event

Anne and David didn’t want their Key Largo wedding to feel rushed, so they stretched it into a full weekend. They started with a welcome party at The Square Grouper, one of their favorite spots in the Keys, and made sure everyone got there together by renting a school bus. It set the tone right away: fun, easy, and a little unexpected.

The next day was intentionally unstructured. Some guests hopped on boat rides around the bay, others stayed by the pool, and people had time to actually meet before the wedding. By the time Saturday came around, there was no catching up to do. Everyone already felt connected.

Junebug Tip: If you’re planning a destination wedding, building in this kind of buffer makes a difference. It gives your guests space to settle in so the wedding day itself feels more relaxed.

When the Venue Becomes the Weekend Hub

They knew early on that the setting mattered, not just for photos, but for how people would experience the weekend. Dolphin Point Villas stood out right away. It sits on Florida Bay, with open views of the water and enough space for guests to spread out.

“60 of our guests were actually able to stay on the property,” Anne shared. “It ended up being the perfect place for everyone to gather throughout the weekend.”

Because the venue started as a blank space, they brought in LMAE Events to help shape it. The result was a boho setup with pampas grass, eucalyptus, and warm tones like terracotta and champagne layered in a way that felt right for the setting without feeling overdone.

Choosing Outfits That Fit the Setting

Anne didn’t end up choosing the dress she originally imagined, and that’s exactly why it worked. The Nathalia gown from Grace Loves Lace stood out immediately. “It was by far the most flattering piece of clothing I have ever put on,” she said. “And it was so comfortable, which I hadn’t even considered before.”

David went with a tan seersucker suit that perfectly fit the setting. Together, their outfits felt consistent with everything else, easy, comfortable, and in line with the overall look of the day.

They chose to do a private first look, even though it wasn’t something Anne initially pictured. “It was a great way to get the nerves out and just feel the emotions of the day together.”

It also meant they were able to get photos done earlier and spend more time with their guests later. That small shift made the day feel less rushed and more enjoyable.

Choosing Vendors Based on How They Make You Feel

When it came to building their team, Anne and David paid attention to something simple but telling—how people showed up from the start. “We wanted our wedding vendors to bring good energy and make us feel like we were hanging out with our friends.” They paid attention to conversations, responsiveness, and how easy each vendor was to work with before booking anyone. Those early interactions helped them narrow things down.

That approach led them to a team that felt genuinely supportive, including Junebug vendor and photographer Darcy Graf Photography. By the time the wedding day came around, everything felt collaborative instead of transactional.

Letting Someone Who Knows You Tell Your Story

Their ceremony was led by a close college friend who had been there from the beginning. Instead of something generic, it felt like someone telling their story with real context and familiarity.

They also included Rusty, their dog, who walked down the aisle with David.

Music choices were just as intentional. Every song was chosen because it meant something to them, helping them stay present during the ceremony.

Keeping the Focus on Food, Photos, and Flow

Their Key Largo wedding budget came down to three things: food, photography, and the overall feel of the day. Instead of following a traditional format, they built the reception around movement and interaction.

They skipped a formal bar and went with self-serve beer and wine, paired with a tap truck that guests loved. Dinner was set up as food stations so meals were prepared fresh and people could eat when they wanted. “We wanted people to feel free to move around and mingle, not be stuck at a table all night.”

Using Personal Hobbies as Design Inspiration

Instead of standard table numbers, they named tables after different fish species and paired them with photos of themselves with each one. David even hand-tied fishing flies for the seating chart, tying in something he genuinely enjoys.

They also created custom reusable cups with their initials, which guests used throughout the night and took home after. It was practical, personal, and fit the setting. “We just tried to have fun with it, and it definitely paid off.”

Reworking Traditions to Feel More Natural

Anne and her dad skipped the traditional dance and chose to do a toast instead, sharing a family tradition that felt more natural to them.

David and his mom took a completely different approach. They started their dance to “Highway to Hell,” then invited everyone onto the dance floor. That moment shifted the energy right away, and the dance floor stayed full the rest of the night.

Letting the Day Reflect Their Actual Life

Anne and David’s Key Largo wedding worked because they kept coming back to what mattered to them. They didn’t rush the process and took two years to plan, giving themselves time to give them time to plan a day that matched the life they’d already built.

“Stay true to you,” Anne shared. “It’s so easy to get caught up in what everyone else wants. But this is your day.”

They also leaned into small details and clear priorities, which made decision-making easier along the way.

By the time the weekend wrapped, it didn’t feel like an event. It just felt like a few days in the Keys with their favorite people, plus a wedding in the middle of it.

A Family of Three Elopes at Nauyaca Waterfall Nature Park in an Intimate Costa Rica Ceremony

April 30, 2026 | justine

Lorena and Alejandro didn’t set out to plan a big wedding. Instead, they returned to a place that already meant something to them. Their ceremony at Nauyaca Waterfall brought them back to where they got engaged—this time, with their baby by their side, stepping into a new chapter as a family.

As high school sweethearts, their story has unfolded over years of growing up together. Choosing to elope in Costa Rica felt like a natural extension of that. With just Lorena, Alejandro, and their son there, the day felt quiet, personal, and focused on what mattered most.

This celebration, captured and shared through insights from Junebug vendor and photographer Jenn Guillen Photo, offers a closer look at how a simple, intentional approach can shape a wedding experience in a meaningful way.

What We Love About This Nauyaca Waterfall Wedding:

  • Fully present from start to finish, with no pressure, no rushing, and no distractions
  • An intimate ceremony shared with their baby, making the experience feel deeply personal
  • Returning to the exact place where they got engaged, now as a family of three
  • A simple, nature-forward setting that kept the focus on their connection

Choosing a Meaningful Location Over a Traditional Venue

For Lorena and Alejandro, the decision to marry at Nauyaca Waterfall wasn’t about aesthetics alone. It was about returning to a place that already held significance in their relationship.

As Jenn shared, “They had just arrived in Costa Rica the day before, and being there together felt so special knowing their story—high school sweethearts who had grown up side by side and were now starting this new chapter as a family.”

Revisiting the exact spot where they got engaged gave the day a sense of continuity. It wasn’t just beautiful, it was familiar in a way that made everything feel more grounded.

“They chose to come back to the place where they got engaged, and to experience it again in such a meaningful way, with their baby this time.”

How Timing Matters for Destination Elopements

One of the more practical decisions that shaped this day was timing. Ceremonies at Nauyaca Waterfall typically take place early in the morning, with couples arriving shortly after 7:00 AM. This early start made a noticeable difference. “It allows for a more intimate and private atmosphere before other visitors arrive,” Jenn explained.

That quiet window gave Lorena and Alejandro the space to fully take in their surroundings without distractions. The calm, peaceful energy carried through the rest of the day, making everything feel more personal.

Letting Go of Structure and Trusting the Process

There was no strict timeline or detailed shot list guiding the day. Instead, Lorena and Alejandro leaned into trust and allowed things to unfold naturally. “They honestly didn’t have any specific instructions, they fully trusted my creative direction and went with the flow the whole time.”

That openness created space for genuine moments to come through. Without the pressure to perform, they stayed present, relaxed, and fully engaged with each other. Jenn also noted how this mindset shaped the overall energy: “Their focus was truly on enjoying the moment rather than feeling rushed or overly posed, and that relaxed energy carried through the entire day.”

For couples who feel unsure about being in front of the camera, this is a helpful reminder that you don’t need to control every detail. Trusting your vendors and staying in the moment often leads to a more meaningful experience.

Including Family in a Small, Intentional Way

With just three people present, Lorena, Alejandro, and their son, this wedding embraced intimacy in its purest form. “Seeing them there with their baby made everything feel so intimate and real. Their little one was incredibly calm the entire time, just taking everything in.”

One of the most emotional moments came during their vows, where they included their child in the ceremony. “The most emotional moment was definitely during their vows, when they included their baby. It made everything feel so much deeper and more meaningful.”

That simple choice shifted the ceremony into something that honored not just their relationship, but the family they’ve built together.

Why a Simple Setup Can Feel More Meaningful

There was no elaborate theme or over-the-top design. Instead, Lorena and Alejandro kept things simple, leaning into a natural and timeless look with white florals and soft greenery.

But what stood out most wasn’t the styling, it was the intention behind it. “The simplicity of the day, and the focus on each other,” Jenn shared when reflecting on what made the wedding so special.

Even the overall atmosphere reflected that mindset. “It was such a pleasant and easygoing day from the start. We kept things light and natural so they could feel at ease and just enjoy every moment without pressure.”

What This Nauyaca Waterfall Wedding Can Teach You About Keeping Things Simple

Lorena and Alejandro kept their wedding simple and centered on what mattered most to them. By choosing a place tied to their story and sharing it with their son, the day felt personal in a way that didn’t need anything extra.

As Jenn put it, “The most meaningful moments come from being present, choosing a place that feels special to you, and creating a day that reflects your story, not anyone else’s expectations.”

This Wedding was a Toast to Amsterdam, and Even Included a Canal Boat Cocktail Hour

Katie and Brian didn’t plan to meet in Amsterdam, and they definitely didn’t expect that a few shared days there would turn into a relationship spanning years, cities, and countless flights. Looking back, though, it makes sense that their story would lead them back to the same place for their wedding.

They met in June 2015 after a mix of timing and coincidence placed them in the same apartment. Katie was studying abroad and needed a place to stay, while Brian was traveling and staying with a mutual friend who would later officiate their wedding. They kept in touch after returning to the US, and a year later, Brian tracked down Katie after realizing he had saved the wrong number. Their first date in Santa Monica picked up where they left off. Years of long-distance and major life shifts followed, until an unexpected opportunity brought them back to Amsterdam to start their next chapter together.

What We Love About This Amsterdam Wedding:

  • A canal boat cocktail hour that gave guests a completely different view of the city
  • A color palette inspired by Amsterdam’s brick, water reflections, and greenery
  • A wedding weekend built around places that mattered to their relationship
  • A spiced cake that honored Brian’s childhood traditions
  • A first dance that turned into a full singalong with their closest friends

Making the Most of a Destination Wedding Through Multiple Events

With guests traveling from different parts of the world, Katie and Brian wanted their wedding to feel like more than just one day.

They started with a rehearsal dinner at De Durgerdam, a quiet waterfront hotel outside the city, where guests spent time swimming, relaxing, and listening to speeches. The following day, they hosted a welcome gathering at Brouwerij ‘t IJ, a place tied to their earliest memories together, complete with burgers, beer, and local snacks.

They also organized optional activities throughout the week, including museum visits and neighborhood strolls, giving guests a chance to experience Amsterdam the way they do. “If I were to do it all over again, this would be my north star—to root every decision in your guests getting to know your story better.”

Blending Meaningful Traditions With Personal Choices

Throughout the day, Katie and Brian balanced emotional moments with light, personal touches.

Their ceremony included a private ring-warming with Katie’s grandparents, who shared wisdom from their 60-year marriage. Their officiant, who had introduced them years earlier, told their story from a deeply personal perspective.

Later that evening, the tone shifted. Their first dance was set to “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes, their go-to karaoke song. “We were singing, jumping up and down, surrounded by friends. It was an organic moment of shared joy.”

Breaking Away From a Traditional Wedding Timeline

After the ceremony, Katie and Brian shifted the flow of the day in a way that felt completely true to the setting. Instead of a standard cocktail hour, they brought their guests onto canal boats waiting just outside their venue. “There is no better way to take in the city than by stepping onto a boat,” they said.

Guests cruised through the canals while enjoying drinks and even cutting the wedding cake along the way. With two boats in motion, Katie and Brian switched halfway through to spend time with everyone, creating a moment that was equal parts memorable and chaotic in the best way.

Created a Cohesive Look Using the Location as Inspiration

From the beginning, Katie and Brian wanted their Amsterdam wedding to reflect the city itself rather than follow a traditional theme. “Our design elements were focused entirely on toasting the city—the shimmer of light that hits the canals, the cozy atmosphere, and the city’s unique architecture.”

Their color palette drew from deep brick tones, warm neutrals, metallic accents, and greenery. Bridesmaids chose their own dresses within that range, resulting in a look that felt layered and natural, much like the city around them.

Letting the location guide your design can make everything feel more cohesive, especially for destination weddings where the setting already offers so much inspiration.

Why Hiring a Local Planner Matters for Destination Weddings

Planning a wedding while coordinating an international move wasn’t exactly ideal, but Katie and Brian knew they needed support on the ground.

“We hadn’t yet moved to Amsterdam, so our first step was to identify a planner who knew the city well and could help us navigate while still living in the US,” they said.

That decision made all the difference. With their local planner guiding the process, they were able to translate their story into a weekend that felt intentional and rooted in place.

For couples planning from afar, their experience is a clear takeaway: having someone local who understands the logistics and the culture can take a huge amount of pressure off your shoulders.

Prioritizing Comfort and Trust When Choosing a Vendor Team

When building their vendor team, Katie and Brian focused less on style alone and more on how each vendor would make them feel during the day.

“The key for us was finding partners who made us feel comfortable, ourselves, and could capture the feeling of the moments without feeling like they were participating.”

That mindset led them to a team that allowed them to fully experience each part of the celebration. Their photographer and videographer captured everything naturally, while their band delivered the kind of energy Brian had envisioned from the start.

What Couples Should Focus on Most During Their Wedding

Katie and Brian’s Amsterdam wedding was a chance to return to where everything started and share that story with the people who matter most. From canal-side moments to carefully chosen locations across the city, every part of the weekend gave their guests a deeper understanding of their journey.

Their advice is simple: “Remember, at your wedding, you are the guests of honor, not the hosts. Maintain focus on your partner and don’t leave each other’s sides.”

And if there’s one takeaway from their experience, it’s this: the more your wedding reflects your real story, the more meaningful it becomes for everyone who gets to be part of it.
