This Vibrant Texas Wildlife Sanctuary Wedding has All the DIY Inspiration You Need

Lord of the Rings fans, rejoice!  Amelia and Luke’s wildlife sanctuary wedding has all the whimsical and non-traditional wedding inspiration you could ever want! The couple threw tradition to the wind and curated a day that was all about their love, their connection with nature, and their incredible friends and family who helped them pull off the entire event. Not only did they host their special day at their property but they created every piece of décor and the bride made her wedding dress! Every element was a celebration of nature, including the unity ceremony in which the couple planted a tree using soil from each of their childhood homes. We can hardly put into words how much this wedding warms our souls and how grateful we are Payton Marie Photography was there to capture every unbelievable moment!

The Couple:

Amelia and Luke

The Wedding:

Sanger, Texas

The biggest driving factor for all decision making was to make our day completely and authentically us. We scrapped many traditions to make our entire day sculpted to what would make us happy and feel genuine as we declared and celebrated our love for each other.

Everything for our wedding was DIY, except our photographer. All of our decorations, tables, setup and even our venue was DIY. We got married in a wildlife sanctuary and earth shelter community where we live. We lightly landscaped the areas for the ceremony and reception. For our ceremony spot, we cleared and planted fresh ryegrass right before a big rain, and it was perfectly lush and dreamy for the day-of. We also made an altar from tree stumps and moss, as well as an arc of flowers under an old oak tree.

Groom Entrance – “Concerning Hobbits” from The Lord of the Rings soundtrack
Bride’s Entrance – “La Vie En Rose” by Laura & Anton
Recessional – “You Do Something to Me” by Ella Fitzgerald

The entire day was the best of our lives, but two moments in particular really stand out. First, we were advised not to hold back on our first kiss because it was a moment we would want to hold close for the rest of our lives. So, we took that advice to heart and did a full dip as all of our guests laughed and cheered! Second, after the recessional, we had a few moments to breathe and soak it all up. We looked into each other’s eyes and cried, hugged, and kissed because we couldn’t believe how happy we were. It was a moment filled with emotion, laughter, and pure bliss!

For our reception spot, we strung lights between the trees and got silent generators to light up the woods all around the tables and dance floor. We had sculptures, taper candles, and even wooden candle holders we made ourselves. The day ended up being colder than planned, so we also had fire pits, hot drinks, and a wheelbarrow full of blankets for our guests. It was a huge undertaking but, ultimately, an amazing adventure!

Colorful DIY Fort Worth Warehouse Wedding at The 4 Eleven

Inspired by the jewel tones of South America, Jenna and Todd created the most beautiful and colorful wedding day at The 4 Eleven! Using tons of DIY and personally curated decor, the couple brought an eclectic vibe to the warehouse space and made it feel charming and uniquely personal. Vivienne & Vine then added florals in a mix of vibrant and jewel tones to match the bridesmaids’ gowns and complement the bohemian feel of the entire day. The couple carried that unique look into their attire, as well, with Jenna donning a gorgeous Grace Loves Lace gown and white booties and Todd choosing a modern, custom Indochino suit. With so many dreamy details and heart-warming moments, we are loving how Brandi Allyse Photo captured this remarkable wedding day!

The Couple:

Jenna and Todd

The Wedding:

The 4 Eleven, Fort Worth, Texas

From the bride: “I wanted a dress that was classy but sexy. Grace Loves Lace had exactly that. I fell in love with a backless lace dress with a beautiful train. It was comfortable and I wanted to be able to dance! As far as makeup and hair, I wanted to look like me and have natural tones. My emerald earrings added just a touch of color. My bridesmaids were all in different jewel tones. I wanted them to pick a dress they felt pretty in. I didn’t want to tell them what to wear and feel uncomfortable.”

From the groom: “As someone not afraid to admit to being to fashion a little bit I wanted to make sure that my suit was custom fit and a unique color but did not want to overshadow the bride. I found a perfect suit at Indochino, which customizes everything down to buttonholes to lapels. I also wanted to differentiate from the norm of the guys renting outdated suits and spent a lot of time finding affordable suits, shoes, accessories that they could keep for much less than $200.”

From the bride: “I loved having my 13-year-old daughter by my side as my maid of honor. Being able to include her was so special. It felt right during such a special moment to glance at her next to me while Todd and I said our vows. I know this an important day of her life, as well.”

From the groom: “The most memorable part of my day was getting to see Jenna walk down the aisle with her older brother escorting her, after she had been on crutches for multiple weeks (and not supposed to be wearing shoes or putting pressure on her foot). I will never forget how happy (and sad) that moment was for me.”

We had one of the groom’s closest friends officiate the wedding, wrote our own vows, and served coffee and hot chocolate at the entrance to our ceremony because of the cold weather. Jenna also hired one of her singer/songwriter friends to perform prior to and during the ceremony. She had performed the night of our first date, so it was very special! Also, we included our dog CoCo as one of the flower girls. It was absolutely adorable watching my 4-year-old nephew escort her in.

We did not want to have a rustic wedding and wanted more of a unique, eclectic feel. Jenna’s father was from Mexico and her mother is Peruvian. So, colorful and warm was a must!

We DIY’d pretty much everything! Jenna worked tirelessly accumulating everything over an 11-month span. Our garage looked like a storage unit when it was all said and done! I questioned her often about what all she kept buying but I must admit she turned her vision into a reality. It also made for a nice way to recoup a little bit of money being able to resell a lot of the items after the wedding.

This Couple Personalized Their Lopez Island Wedding with Tons of DIY Details

Louisa and Sam’s main goal for their Lopez Island wedding was that it felt genuinely and authentically like them, and we think they knocked it out of the park! Nearly every detail of their day, from the floral arrangments to their cakes, were handmade by themselves and their family and friends. Then Wholehearted Events helped them create a cohesive design that spoke to their life and their love for the community. Their summery color palette looked gorgeous within natural space, and their casual, raw, and heartfelt approach to every part of their day made this wedding so much more than just a beautiful day. Malorie Kerouac Photography could not have captured their vibe and their love more perfectly!

The Couple:

Louisa and Sam

The Wedding:

Private Residence, Lopez Island, Washington

Sam and I were most concerned about making our wedding authentic to us. We had family and friends involved in almost every aspect of the day: Sam‘s godfather was our officiant, our friends from the band Fretland Band played guitar for the processional and our first dance, and my mom made 15-20 homemade cakes because I wanted to eat cake all night and the next morning (and for the days following but who is counting?). Personally, I wanted to have the most beautiful dress that would be timeless in photos, and I wanted natural photos that captured exactly how Sam and I felt together.

The most memorable part of our wedding day was reciting our vows. I went first and had practiced my vows aloud to a friend once, but the second I started talking I started to happy cry as I told him all the reasons I knew he was the one for me. During one of the breaks of me trying to hold in my tears, Sam leaned over and whispered into my ear a phrase that he uses whenever I do anything slightly embarrassing: “Get your shit together, or we’re leaving.” I completely laughed out loud, which our photographer caught on camera perfectly.

Our venue was the island home of Sam‘s bosses. Their house is a culmination of their impeccable taste, Northwest style, and outdoor beauty. Sam and I had dinner with them the summer before we got married and were enamored! Then and there, we both agreed we had to get married there. After getting engaged, the first thing we did was reach out to them asking if we could use their home for our wedding. It was incredibly generous of them to lend it to us and just added to how personal our wedding was to us!

Make your wedding day personal. The little things aren’t going to be what makes your day special; the moments with your new spouse, with your friends and family, and photos of you in a killer dress are what you will hold on to. Don’t feel pressure to have things that you don’t think are necessary, but don’t skimp on the things that matter the most to you. Finally, get a photographer who you trust to capture your day: photos are the only tangible thing to remind you of your wedding, so make sure that you will love them.

Almost everything was DIY! My mom, myself, and friends of ours baked over 20 cakes. My bridesmaid did my hair and makeup. We arranged the florals bouquets and tables ourselves. We also had our friends sing at our reception for our first dance. My mom hand-painted a wedding certificate for our home just like she and my dad have hanging in theirs. Doing all of these things on our own made it feel like our wedding was really ours — something that wouldn’t look like everyone else’s — and had a very “Sam and Louisa” vibe.

Elegant Laid-Back McCormick Home Ranch Wedding with Pops of Blush and DIY Touches

April 3, 2019 | juliette

Using elegant colors, rustic handmade decor, and the sweetest florals, Madisen and Scott created the dreamiest wedding day at McCormick Home Ranch! The couple’s creativity and artistry shone through in every single element of this wedding and their fun-loving personalities were uncontainable in every photo captured by Jessie Schultz Photography and the film captured by Kelly Balch. Madisen and Scott danced, cuddled, laughed, cried, and sprinted their way from beginning to end, and their joy was absolutely contagious! We simply can’t get enough of this bride’s stunning Willoby Watters gown, which allowed her to twirl to her heart’s desire, and the combination of chic heels and pink sneakers she donned throughout the day. We guarantee this incredible California wedding will make your cheeks hurt from smiling!

The Couple:

Madisen and Scott

The Wedding:

McCormick Home Ranch, Camarillo, California

The most important thing to us in planning our wedding was staying in the moment and enjoying every step (even the stressful and not-so-fun steps). I had been told several times by family members and friends that it would go by so quickly, and it did because we were only engaged for 10 months. We wanted to cherish every second and not get stressed over the little things.

I love fashion and beauty and was so stoked to have my amazing colorist and stylist Laura Shields do my hair and the talented Trish Morgan for my makeup. (She’s been doing my makeup since high school prom days!) I basically decided how everything would look after picking my dress. My dress was A-line, flowy, and super comfortable. Being an off-white/gray color, it was still traditional with a modern twist. This led me to want clip-in extensions to create a mermaid/laid-back vibe. My makeup was very natural with a touch of lavender on my lids and a dark nude lip.

Being an artist myself, my photographers were such an important choice for me. Jessie and Dylan were truly incredible! They got along seamlessly with our videographer, Kelly Balch. In fact, they had never met before and became buddies after our wedding! They are the ultimate dream team. Jessie had shot my sister’s wedding a few years back, and I was obsessed with her style and her confidence. She makes you feel so comfortable, she hypes you up, but most importantly, she allows you to be your true self. The candid photos of the wedding are the most amazing. Scott and I moved around so much, and she was able to capture our love and excitement through the photos. It’s truly an art and a gift that a lot of photographers do not have. I believe that!

Our biggest piece of advice would be to stay in the moment and enjoy every single step from the day you get engaged, to planning, to the very end of your wedding night. Do not get hung up on the little things because the truth is, not every single thing will go as planned. Your wedding is going to work like any other day in that you cannot plan or prepare for things that could go wrong. Try to be flexible and keep in mind that at the end of the day, no matter what happens, you’ll still get to marry your best friend!

We added so many personal DIY touches to our big day. It was a ton of work, but we are both super creative and wanted to showcase a little of that in our reception. My husband built and stained our sweetheart table and donut wall. His uncle built our wrap-around bar. I hand lettered all of the signage, and I wood burned a coaster for each one of our guests with their first + last name. This sat on their place setting when they entered the reception area. It also served as our wedding favor.

We had so many memorable parts of our day, but our first dance was super special. It felt like we were the only two people there, and we were so focused on each other. We were so in the moment!

Crafty Brides will be Inspired by this Rustic DIY Wedding at Brenwood Lake Weddings

Mary and Travis’ special day at Brenwood Lake Weddings was essentially a masterclass in DIY charm. The couple made nearly every detail, including centerpieces made from old books, an atlas and postcard guide book, and succulent favors. Vivian’s Flower Shop also added accents of organic, textural flowers in a mix of bold and vibrant colors, which added to the handmade and totally romantic vibe. From the couple’s emotional first look in the woods to their gloriously sweet bicycle exit from the reception, Earthmark Photography did a fantastic job capturing every minute of this Virginia wedding!

The Couple:

Mary and Travis

The Wedding:

Brenwood Lake Weddings, Stanley, Virginia

When we first visited Brenwood Lake Weddings, we immediately fell in love with it. The scenery is gorgeous, the facilities are extremely comfortable, and the venue owners (Brenda and Lynwood) are exceptional people and hosts. The log reception hall was the perfect size for what we needed and felt warm and homey. The spot where we had the ceremony was surrounded on three sides by tall trees, making it very green and peaceful. It was what we envisioned for our day before ever seeing this venue. We cannot recommend Brenwood Lake Weddings enough. It was absolutely amazing and exactly what we wanted. Brenda and Lynwood went out of their way to ensure we were happy every step of the way.

We really wanted both of Travis’ parents to do the ceremony. Their ceremony included so many stories, poems, and other unique details from our lives before and after we met. We also had a tea unity ceremony where we both poured a different kind of tea into one glass. Our very first dates always involved tea and we try to keep a tradition of serving each other tea.

From the groom: There was so much that I remember very clearly, but during the first dance I remember thinking, “We did it! We’re married! This is what we planned everything for!” and then cutting loose on the dance floor for the rest of the night. (Shout out to Andrew who did a great job DJ-ing!)

From the bride: The entire day was amazing, but our sendoff was most memorable to me. My old roommates decorated our bikes, which we rode off into the woods between two lines of our friends and family. We biked into complete darkness and to the other side of the lake. From there, we could see the venue from a different perspective. It was so dreamy—the lake had mist rising off of it and we had a perfect view of the stars.

This DIY Dairyland Wedding Brought the Natural Beauty of Washington Indoors

Get ready for this Dairyland wedding to melt every single piece of your heart! From handmade garlands to hand-painted wine bottles to the ombre napkins, there wasn’t a single element that Rhyss, Andrew, and their loving family and friends didn’t touch. The copper and navy color palette alongside all the natural greenery was a breath of fresh air and made the venue feel like an indoor garden. Those elements, combined with the vintage furniture rentals, took the style factor off the charts! Most importantly, though, Rhyss and Andrew’s love for each other and for their guests was overflowing from beginning to end, making this one of the most emotional, heartfelt, and joyful celebrations we have had the honor of publishing! We have to give a shoutout to Carmen Lopez Photography for capturing it all with such care and love.

The Couple:

Rhyss and Andrew

The Wedding:

Dairyland, Snohomish, Washington

We wanted our wedding to be a reflection of us: Andrew being a down-to-earth and a relaxed person while, me, paying attention to the details and aesthetics. So, I think it really translated well as we both listened to each other. Everyone had a great time partying and looked great!

There was a moment just before when the ceremony started where Andrew and I were sitting by our grooms’ party room alone with one of our family friends. It was the moment where Carmen sneakily captured Andrew and me crying and holding hands by a sofa. We were just taking it all in. Our family friend was reminding us how lucky we were, not only as a gay couple but because of all the hardships we endured together and all the support we have. We had to make a lot of sacrifices during our long-distance relationship between Vancouver, BC, and Seattle, WA. So, for us, the whole moment finally meant we were going to be together.

Almost everything from our wedding was a DIY project! It was all possible with the help of our amazing family and friends, and it was overwhelmingly humbling for both of us to have this much support. Our aunts arranged our flower bouquets and one of our aunts officiated the ceremony. Our sisters were our event planners, our friends helped us spray paint over a hundred wine bottles, and our awesome grooms’ party moved tables between the ceremony and reception in their dresses and suits! Even most of our decorations, aside from all the amazing vintage rental items we got, were all DIY and budget-friendly. From cutting garlands, handwriting all the tile “place cards”, and creating ombre napkins, it was really amazing to have everyone come together and help us.

We’re in Pinterest Heaven Over This DIY Farm Wedding in Pennsylvania

A potentially haunted private farmhouse estate, vintage lounge furniture, and literally all the handmade wedding decor you could possibly dream up? We’re all in for Taigen and Dan’s incredible DIY farm wedding in Pennsylvania! Because the couple’s ceremony took place outside and their reception was set up under a sailcloth tent, they weren’t restricted to a particular look or theme and allowed them to create a completely custom vibe that was equal parts rustic, elegant, and eclectic. Cindy Bee Floral added beautiful pops of florals to round out the look, and Cody Kurtz Photography captured it all in perfectly! From the homegrown eucalyptus to the handmade signs and every little detail in between, we’re confident this wedding will be filling up your Pinterest boards in no time.

The Couple:

Taigen and Dan

The Wedding:

Private Estate, Muncy, Pennsylvania

My favorite wedding day memory was the first look. Known for their work ethic, grit, and rough hands, one thing farmers are seldom regarded as are fashion insiders. I’d show him wedding dress photos on social media and blogs to get a feel for what he liked. After learning what he did and did not fancy, I feared I’d have to marry him in a cotton sundress instead of the extravagant gown I’d always imagined. Besides, since the glitz and glam of NYC took me away from Dan and the farm for a while, he much prefers me in muck boots and a tee shirt than a dress and lipstick. This made it hard for me to envision his reaction when he first saw me in my Enzoani gown.

The photographer chose a location on the property that was a few miles away from our ceremony and reception site, away from the chaos of vendors and family setting up. With gorgeous views of the Appalachian mountains and soybean fields, our first look site was on a private country road that leads to one of the barns on the property. Dan was facing the other direction, forbidden to turn around as I slowly made my way closer to him. I felt my long train dragging and anticipation with each step as I neared the man who wrote “Marry You Later” in my yearbook ten years ago, the man I would wake up next to every morning for the rest of my life. When Dan turned around, his eyes started to water and he picked me up in the most genuine embrace and said under his breath “you look so beautiful” almost like he was thinking out loud. The photographer captured this moment perfectly.

While the catering, the dress, and the timeline — among other wedding components — were certainly important, I’d say the most important part in planning our wedding was the decorations. I believe the look and feel of a wedding sets the tone for everything else. We opted for an open-air cocktail hour and sailcloth tent reception. This meant we were not confined to the sometimes-stringent requirements of a venue but were tasked with the challenge of turning a blank canvas into a beautiful, inviting space for our guests. There were no wooden floors, walls with character or fun lighting fixtures, just nature and a whole lot of endless possibilities for showcasing our personalities through the layout and décor.

Dan is a third generation farmer, so when it came time to look for wedding venues, he mentioned one of the beautiful properties where his family leases farmland. I remember seeing it before and being in awe of the beauty, so it didn’t take much convincing for me to agree that we should ask about hosting our wedding there. It was really neat to say our “I do’s” in front of a soybean field that Dan cultivates every summer — not to mention, dying soybeans make for beautiful yellow and green foliage in the fall!

The private property is owned by Malcolm Barlow. Malcolm is a distinguished, gentleman farmer who retired after years of working for a pharmaceutical company in Philadelphia. This was Malcolm’s childhood home. He moved here at the age of 5 after being shipped to his new caregivers, when he escaped WWII from England with his siblings. In addition to surviving Indian raids, making it the oldest home in Lycoming County, the property is home to one of the oldest iron bridges in the united states. When digging up the ground for a pool on the west side of the home (where we said our vows), the previous landowners were astonished to find the bodies of a redcoat soldier and a Native American, furthering questions as to whether the original homeowner, Samuel Wallis, was playing both sides during the Revolutionary War. The home is even is rumored to have a ghost that makes itself readily known to guests who stay the night. If walls could talk, these walls would have many tales to tell and I’m proud to have our love story on the list (as low as it may be).

Because our rentals were deemed important enough to eat up a chunk of the décor budget, I challenged myself and my husband to DIY everything that we could. Dan’s family farm stand boasts a large greenhouse so we grew our own eucalyptus to help cut floral costs. We avoided paying hundreds of dollars on a neon sign by making our own personalized sign using an acrylic slab, neon rope, an electric drill, and gaffers tape.

The place cards, guest itinerary’s (included in hotel goodie bags), and bar menus were self-designed and hand-ripped to achieve a deckled edge. Dan’s sister is a talented calligrapher who designed our invite envelopes. She inspired me to tackle the calligraphy on the ceremony and event signage chalkboards. Using faux eucalyptus and grapevine wreaths, I made eucalyptus wreaths of varying sizes. I planned to layer and suspend these over the dance floor using fishing wire, but I ended up hanging them elsewhere due to time constraints and insufficient structures within the tent.

Our saving grace was the talent of my husband. When he’s not tending to crops, Dan moonlights as a carpenter. He whipped up the products on my “honey-do list” in no time. Our favorite DIY project was the airstream photo booth. I had a list of potential photobooth vendors but kept going back to these van photobooths and airstream photobooths, perfect for outdoor weddings. The only downfall of these little beauties is that they can cost you upwards of thousands of dollars. Instead, I reached out to my friend and bridesmaid whose husband had just refurbished their airstream a few years prior. She gladly obliged to loan the airstream to us. I minimalized and decorated the interior with a shag rug, fake plant and stacked books. I command stripped marquee letters reading “PHOTOS” to the outside and left a little bar cart by the entrance for guest drinks and props. I ended up only spending a few hundred dollars for a DIY photobooth, Booth by Mail. Even the photobooth attendant was a sort of DIY project. I had met a gentleman at a wedding the weekend before ours and he said he’d love to attend my wedding to see all my “babe friends” from NYC. I called his bluff when I offered him a seat next to mutual friends and unlimited drinks if he agreed to be my photobooth attendant. Voila! I had our own airstream photo booth that guests loved!

My advice would be to put in the hard work months prior and create/share your timeline with all vendors and the bridal party so the day-of you can be blissfully in the moment. I created a spreadsheet with a tab for each aspect of my wedding (guest list, timeline, budget, catering, decorations, DIY projects, rentals, etc. I referenced that spreadsheet every day and made a point to wedding plan at least one hour per day, 4 days per week. I started planning 8 months prior.

Tons of DIY and Love Went Into This Washington Wedding at The Loft in Chehalis

Between the industrial-meets-rustic vibes, the DIY decor, and the pops of autumnal colors, we’re all in for this downtown wedding at The Loft in Chehalis! With the ultimate goal to create a wedding day that represented the quirks of their relationship, Sarah and Barnabas let sentimentality and creativity be the driving force behind every decision they made during the planning process. Playing off the industrial vibes of the historic downtown venue, the couple and their planner from Olive + Rust brought together tons of handmade and yarn decor and the prettiest autumn-inspired florals created by For the Love of Floral. The result was pure romance from beginning to end. And to say Olivia Strohm Photography captured the essence of this wedding would be an understatement!

The Couple:

Sarah and Barnabas

The Wedding:

The Loft in Chehalis, Washington

Our priority from day one was to plan a celebration of our love that reflected our quirks. Everything about our wedding – the classical guitarist playing Beyonce hits during cocktail hour, the excessive use of yarn as decor, the lavender flavored gelato, and the classic “Puyallup” fair scones – was chosen because it evoked some memory we wanted to share with our loved ones. Hardly any decisions were made simply for the sake of tradition; instead, every decision was made because we felt it represented our love for one another and our community.

Although it was the shortest part of the day, our ceremony was the most memorable part of our wedding day. We had a few priorities for our ceremony: that it represent our faith, that it emphasize the importance of community in marriage, and that it reflect the unity of our family and friends from all over the country. None of this would have been possible without Shannon, our officiant. Shannon effortlessly blended some traditional elements of a religious wedding ceremony with a few of our less-traditional wishes. We will never forget the feeling of our family and friends surrounding us on all sides, passing the peace to one another, and committing to love and support us from both near and far.

I have always loved crafts, so a DIY wedding was inevitable for me! My mom and I spent hours on the floor making yarn tassels and throwing balls of yarn back and forth to cut string for the ceremony backdrop. In fact, we watched all of Game of Thrones while we tied yarn, painted signs, and designed invitations. Ultimately though, the real DIY MVP was my dad. He made many of the essential structures for our day-of signage out of wood, acrylic, and copper and finished up painting (by hand!) many of the signs I couldn’t finish up myself. It was fun to see all of the personal touches and hours of labor come to life on our wedding day!

If there is any way you can, hire a wedding planner. Or, at the very least, a day-of coordinator. We are both organized people with lots of friends and family who were willing to do whatever we needed them to do leading up to the wedding and on the day of. But, with that being said, it was 110% worth it to have someone whose sole job it was to flawlessly execute our dreams. Because of our coordinator and planner, everyone who may have otherwise been stressed out with fulfilling their role on our wedding day could simply relax and enjoy the celebration.

Dreamy DIY Snohomish Wedding at Wildshoot Forest & Farm

We’re having a hard time thinking of anything cozier than Katie and Marc’s wedding day Wildshoot Forest & Farm! This sweet couple spent months collecting and creating nearly every element of their wedding decor with the goal of not only representing the best of their relationship but also the challenges that made them who they were when they said, “I do.” Their entire day was focused on family, friends, and the love that brought everyone together — and the result was just as magical as you can imagine! Despite the rain, their outdoor ceremony and open-air reception in the farmstead were casual and naturally charming, and photographer Anni Graham captured that vibe with all the grace and softness it deserved.

The Couple:

Katie and Marc

The Wedding:

Wildshoot Forest & Farm, Snohomish, Washington

The most important thing for us was keeping our wedding and the atmosphere around it to be true to ourselves and true to the story of our relationship. We intentionally included references to some harder times and some less-than-perfect moments, because that was the reality of story that we had come through to get to the moment of saying “I do.” We also really strove to make the friends and family that were able to come to feel loved and welcomed to celebrate along with us – we wanted to have a big party, and have a ton of fun, not just have everyone staring at us the whole time.

During the ceremony we had anyone who wanted, come up and surround us, lay hands on us, offer blessings, prayers, and encouragements. It was an amazing moment of feeling held and carried by our community – we knew that we weren’t entering this marriage by alone, but with the support of our friends and our families.

Large portions of our wedding and decorations were DIY. Wildshoot Forest & Farm provided a guided forage of the property the day prior for us to gather greenery and florals that we used for a majority of the centerpieces, chandelier, and other decorations. We used old books to create the table runners and collected brown glass bottles to use for centerpieces. We also handmade the table name cards. With the beauty and charm of the venue and an outdoor ceremony, we were able to keep the decorations pretty minimal and simple, which was a huge help in the planning and decorating process.

We spent months beforehand collecting an eclectic variety of coffee mugs from thrift stores, co-workers, friends, and neighbors for guests to use throughout the night and beyond. Upon arrival, we had a table set up with the mugs (and a sign saying “Let your mug choose you”) and guests could choose which mug called out to them.

Our best advice: You probably have more talented and creative people in your life who love you than you realize, don’t be afraid to ask them for help! There’s no way we could have done this by ourselves, nor would it have been as meaningful.

We Love the Blue Watercolor Theme of This DIY Catskills Wedding at The Beaverkill Valley Inn

December 9, 2018 | juliette

The intimate backyard feel and the modern summer color palette of Katey and James’ wedding at The Beaverkill Valley Inn have us feeling a whole different kind of blue today! Rather than choose just one shade of blue for their wedding, the couple channeled the watercolor effect of their invitations created by Rachel Marvin Creative onto their hand-dyed table runners, their hand-painted escort cards, and the bridesmaids’ mismatched gowns. Then The Green Cottage added a complementary pop of light pink in the florals to create the prettiest summer feel. We’re completely in love with the laid-back yet elegant vibe that Charmed Places helped bring to life and the way photographer Caroline Ro captured every angle of this charming New York wedding! Seriously, though, is it summer yet?

The Couple:

Katey and James

The Wedding:

The Beaverkill Valley Inn, Livingston Manor, New York

When planning our wedding our two biggest priorities were finding an outdoor space that felt unique and beautiful where family and wedding party could stay onsite with us to make an experience of the whole weekend, and having the end result really feel like us.

It is so difficult to pick just one most memorable part of the day, but being with each other at the altar is one that we recount so often. Also, immediately following the ceremony we had a private champagne toast with our wedding party as they acted as our witnesses for the signing of our marriage license. It was something we thought up last minute, but, wow! What a memorable moment surrounded by best friends and the happiest sip of bubbly we’ve ever had!

We hand-dyed all our table runners in my parents’ backyard a month before the big day! It was so fun to have the whole family involved and a memory we’ll have forever. We also made all our signage, including a huge sign that read, “Well my heart went boom when I crossed that room” from The Beatles song, “Saw Her Standing There” (a groom favorite). We installed it on the far side of the pond (slightly in the distance) with a spotlight and enjoyed it all weekend long! Another big DIY project was our escort card display. It was a large free-standing wood frame on legs, with hand watercolored cards made by the bride’s uncle and then calligraphed by a very talented best friend. Each card was hung on wire rows with a mini clothespin.

Our best advice: Be sure to stay true to you! There are so many opinions of what a wedding should be and should look like, but as long as you are over the moon about the plans everything else will fall into place. That, and CUT A RUG!
