Laid-Back Spanish Fiesta Wedding at Casa del Rio

November 23, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Fiesta! We’re positively obsessed with Elin and Oliver’s colorful and laid-back Spanish fiesta wedding at Casa del Rio! Elin and Oliver knew planning a destination wedding would be easier with a team, so they hired oh-so-talented Open the Door Events to help them pull off the day of their dreams. In an effort to minimize material things, the couple focused on creating an experience their guests would remember — complete with food from Canela & Clavo to enjoy throughout the night. If you’ve been dreaming of a fiesta wedding, we can’t wait for you to see how photographer Joy Zamora captured every laugh, tear, and detail with absolute perfection!

The most important aspect of planning our wedding was to have the perfect wedding planner onboard. Someone who understood our sense of style, the emotions we wanted the decor, food and music to evoke. Luckily we found the perfect woman, Opi at Open the door event, who didn’t just go beyond to help give the day the magic it deserved but also became a true friend.

Sharing a moment with my beloved bridesmaids and Opi, holding their hands, hugging and jumping with excitement was beautiful. And as I walked out to a beautiful classical piano piece played by Oliver’s little brother and saw Oliver, surrounded by beautiful floral arrangements and our most beloved friends and family, I couldn’t believe my luck. That moment was unspeakably magical. We loved the whole ceremony, beautifully hosted by our friend Vanessa. Stories were shared, songs performed and tears of joy shed. The party afterwards with food, music, dance and smiling faces was one to remember for ever as well.

We involved our talented friends and family all the way through. We asked Oliver’s little brother Gabriel to play a classical piano piece as the processional song, and we asked our friend Vanessa to be our officiant. We trusted her to write the whole thing without our involvement. Strong, beautiful words were shared and two songs were performed by Vanessa and our best man Faraz accompanied on piano by another friend, Linnea. We loved involving our near and dear, it was an incredibly beautiful moment. Regarding style, Opi did a stellar job designing the space exactly how we liked it. Bohemian, natural and full of colorful blooms, pillows and rugs. Chairs were set up in a circle and we were in the middle. Love was radiating from everywhere!

Wedding planning advice from the bride: If you’re going for a destination wedding, consider getting a wedding planner. It takes so much stress of your shoulders. Even if you manage to book the venue and all the vendors yourself, coordinating everything on the day while enjoying your big day is a tough task. Also – book a professional photographer and videographer. We look back on the photos and videos all the time.

Our photographer is surely one of the best in the field. We LOVE Joy (José Zamora), who’s also Opi’s (our wedding planner’s) partner, which in itself created such an amazing, dynamic and loving atmosphere. José is the most humble, deep and warm person and it shines through his work and the way he treats his couples. He made us feel like a million bucks. He directed us smoothly and just blended in as a friend while he created the most stunning photographic work. We were lucky to create a beautiful friendship with both Opi and Joy which made our wedding all the more magical and worth while.

We’re a multinational couple, Oliver is Danish/English and I (the bride) am Swedish/Mexican, and we’ve lived in 15 countries between us. We wanted the wedding to reflect our colorful mix and nomadic way of life. This considered, our wedding evolved into a colorful, bohemian, laid back fiesta with touches of Mexico.

We wanted as much of a sustainable wedding as possible and wanted to minimize “stuff”, so no physical wedding favors. We also asked for no gifts, but did however match any contribution we received and gave everything to charity.

We had a constant flow of delicious food and drinks throughout the whole day. And for the dinner, the last thing we wanted was a formal, 4 hour dinner seating. So we went for sharing platters of cured ham, cheeses, nuts and figs served on wooden trays as starters and for the entree we had live show cooking of paellas, BBQ, fish, shellfish and more. On the tables we had jugs of wine and we also had mojitos and margaritas served up in the bar. For dessert we had a delicious range of home made cakes.

8 Tips for Nailing Your Engagement Photos

November 22, 2019 | riley

Engagement photos can be a nerve-wracking process, especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera. Whether you’re engaged already or you think the big question may be coming soon, we want to share the tips we’ve learned over the years to help you feel comfortable and nail your engagement session. From what to wear to where to go, keep these eight things in mind before your upcoming photoshoot!

Why You Should Take Engagement Photos

If you’re reading this post, there’s a good chance you’ve already decided to take engagement photos. But if you’re still on the fence, that’s alright too. There are a lot of reasons to take engagement photos–it helps you get to know your wedding photographer, gives you photos for your save the dates and invitations, and it’s something that you can look back on for years. Not convinced? Don’t take our word for it, listen to photographers Olivia & Dan Photography.

“Engagement photos are an amazing way to foster a strong relationship with your wedding photographer. You’ll get a chance to see how they work, and your photographer will also be able to gauge how you are as a couple, how you connect, and the best way to capture that. Some couples are quiet and intimate, while others are very energetic and vivacious. The more you know about each other, the more natural and relaxed you’ll feel on your wedding day!”

1. Wear Something You’re Comfortable In

This is by far one of the most important tips we can give you. If you wear clothes that are too tight or clingy, you’ll potentially spend your whole session picking at them or covering yourself up. That’s why choosing outfits that make you feel like a million bucks is key. If you purchase something new, take it out for a test run–hello, date night excuse–with plenty of time to launder it before your session in case of a spill or other mishap. You also want to think about how it’ll photograph during your session.

We asked some of our wonderful Junebug photographers for their advice on choosing the perfect outfit and we loved what Katelyn Mallett had to say, “My biggest advice is comfort over everything. If you never wear a suit but are considering it for your engagements because it’s what you have seen, just skip it and wear that band tee that you love. These photos are representative of your own personalities, and you should feel like yourselves and dress like yourselves, too.”

2. Steam Or Iron The Outfits Ahead Of Time

Speaking of what you wear, be sure to de-wrinkle your clothes before your session. A photographer’s least favorite question is “can you just Photoshop that out later?” Oftentimes having things like wrinkles retouched in your photos comes at an additional cost per image. Save yourself the stress and take care of that ahead of time.

3. Consider Professional Hair And Makeup For Your Shoot

If you’ve never done makeup for photos or you aren’t really sure what to do with your hair, you may want to head to the salon before your engagement photos.

Photos require slightly more saturated makeup than what you may be used to so that you don’t look washed out. If you haven’t done your hair and makeup consultation with your wedding day stylist yet, this could be a great time to schedule it. You’ll knock out two birds with one makeup brush.

4. Make A Day Out Of It

One of the best pieces of advice we’ve heard is to make your engagement session part of a day-long date. Not only does this give you plenty of time for photos without feeling rushed, but starting your day in this mindset helps you feel connected with your partner as you head into the photoshoot. Start your day with brunch or coffee at your favorite spot and invite your photographer to meet you there to grab a few shots before changing locations.

5. Set The Scene

Location is everything, so before heading to your neighborhood park for engagement photos, think about what you really love as a couple and what places reflect that. If you love making coffee together and snuggling on the couch with some good ol’ Netflix, maybe an at-home session is right for you. If you’re an adventurous couple who spends your weekends hiking, consider taking photos in the forest or mountains, hiking gear in tow. Don’t be afraid to incorporate your favorite activities.

We love what photographer The Stars Inside had to say about location scouting, “When it comes to choosing the location, opt for a place that has a profound meaning to you both as a couple, like a neighborhood you consider home, or a place that marked a special turning point for your relationship–a first date, a first “I love you, a proposal, etc. Or you could simply choose somewhere with lovely views that reflects your identity as a couple in some way–an adventurous mountainscape, a twinkling city skyline, or a peaceful beachfront (a great excuse for a mini weekend break maybe?). Either way, make sure you choose somewhere where you know you will feel comfortable laughing, cuddling, and generally interacting easily with the space.”

Is a special place not coming to mind? Get inspired with our guide on how to set the scene for your engagement photos.

6. Schedule The Session Around The Sun

You may be familiar with the term “golden hour” aka the beautiful time of day just before the sun sets. This is when you want to shoot if you’re looking for that warm light in your photos. Planning ahead of time using your weather app to find out when sunset is ensures that you have plenty of time to shoot before the light is gone.

The early afternoon may sound like a good time for photos schedule-wise, but keep in mind that the light is much harsher at this time because the sun is directly overhead. Early morning light can also be magical, so if you’re a morning person, consider getting to your first location just as the sun starts to rise.

7. Hire A Professional Photographer

This should go without saying, but you’re going to get the best photos by hiring a professional to take your engagement photos. Your engagement is such a short and special chapter in your life and your relationship, and you deserve to commemorate that time with beautiful photos together.

If possible, we highly recommend booking your engagement photos with your wedding photographer. This gives you an opportunity to get comfortable and connect with your photographer prior to your big day, making for even better photos from your wedding.

8. When In Doubt, Kiss It Out

If you haven’t spent a lot of time in front of a camera (and let’s face it–who has?), you may be pretty nervous or become stiff. A quick way to loosen up while still getting great photos is to go in for a kiss. This can help you connect with your partner and forget the camera is even around, which makes for more natural photos anyway.

You’re officially photo-ready! Remember to relax and have fun, and we promise you, your engagement photos will come out beautifully. Now that you’ve tackled photos, it’s time to take on the world that is wedding planning. We understand that it can be overwhelming, to say the least, which is why we’ve put together the ultimate wedding planning guide!

Timeless Bosch Hoek Wedding in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Midlands

November 22, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Talk about a romantic affair! We’re smitten with Victoria and Marc’s timeless wedding at Bosch Hoek in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. The couple hired planning rockstars from Oh Happy Day to help them create the day of their dreams complete with decor from The Wedding Table and House of Hudson. Victoria wanted her bridal look to resemble her daily look of “glowy, bronzed, and fresh.” Her clean, modern White Lilly Bridal dress and Jimmy Choo shoes were the perfect mix to pull off the essence of everyday simplicity! Get ready to fall in love with every photo Vanilla Photography captured of this sweet day at Bosh Hoek.

The Couple:

Victoria & Marc

The Wedding:

Bosch Hoek, South Africa

I can honestly say I had the ‘dream team’ in terms of vendors. They have all worked together countless times so really just made the day so seamless. Every single one of them were extremely professional and worked their magic to perfection. I really felt very lucky to have the team that I did.

My dress was clean and modern and I wanted to make up to resemble the usual look I go for on a daily basis; glowy, bronzed and fresh. My make up artist had her work cut out as she got quite the comprehensive brief, but she nailed it. Accessories wise – I kept this minimal too with pearl drop earrings only. My shoes were nude Jimmy Choo heels.

Wedding planning advice from the bride: I loved the planning process and loved being involved it it from start to finish. A big factor in enjoying this process was having the planning team I had (Oh Happy Day). They took any unnecessary stress off me and thought of things I could never have done on my own. I think it’s important to decide what is important to you as a couple from the get-go, and stick to prioritizing those things throughout.

I can honestly say that every element of the day was so incredibly memorable for us; from walking down the aisle and greeting our guests at canapes to the photo shoot (which was such a fun time with our bridal party and time alone as a couple) and speeches and the celebration that followed. You will never feel that sheer amount of happiness and love in one day and being surrounded by everyone we loved was just unforgettable.

Bosch Hoek is a place I have grown up visiting and is close to my hometown. I knew I didn’t want a traditional wedding venue and wanted to be able to build our day from scratch. Bosch Hoek allowed for this and their beautiful surroundings and accommodation made it feel like the homely wedding we wanted.

The theme was classic, timeless, modern and fresh and we steered clear of anything too rustic, vintage or cluttered. We chose to personalize the day with my favorite scents from Jo Malone. We chose a scent combination and used candles down all the tables and in the bathrooms. Scent is so important to me and I loved the special touch this added, and my guests loved it too.
