Tips For Writing and Reading Your Maid of Honor Speech

Brainstorm

Before you even begin to write your maid of honor speech, take time to brainstorm. Jot down memories, ideas, and feelings that you have for a few minutes. It doesn’t need to be in the form of a speech. In fact, it can be a quick bullet-point list. You’ll be able to form it all into a speech later. Right now, all you’re worrying about is brain-dumping everything you may potentially want to touch on in your speech.

Keep It Positive & Leave the Past in the Past

While brainstorming (and writing, for that matter), it’s important to remember to leave the past in the past. This means no joking about exes, wild nights out that could be perceived as embarrassing, and other taboo topics (such as sex, negativity about marriage, etc.).

Don’t Focus on Yourself

You may be the one giving the speech, but it’s crucial to tell your stories in a way that highlights the bride rather than yourself. While you will be briefly introducing yourself, you should focus on the newlyweds. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with talking about something memorable the couple did for you, as it showcases their character.

Avoid Inside Jokes

Inside jokes are inside jokes for a reason–you two are the only ones who understand them. If you have to give wedding guests context, it’s probably best to avoid mentioning it altogether. When you joke, keep it lighthearted.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Just as you would practice any other speech in school or work, recite your speech as much as possible. For some, it may be useful to record yourself practicing it so you can take note of your speed, how the jokes will land, and how you look when giving it. Physical presence can make quite the difference, after all. And don’t be afraid to ask other friends for help.

Stay Sober

It may be tempting to have a few drinks or two before giving your speech to loosen the nerves. However, you run the risk of drinking too much and slurring your words or forgetting what to say. Becoming sloppy can be detrimental to your friendship with the bride, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

MOH Speech FAQs

Does the MOH Have to Give a Speech?

Public speaking isn’t for everyone. If you get asked to give a speech, and it stresses you out, vocalize your concern. Most people are incredibly understanding and would never want to put you in a situation where you feel uncomfortable. There are also other avenues aside from a speech–such as a song, dance, or presentation–to showcase your love for the couple.

What if There are Multiple Maids of Honor?

You’ll want to keep it short no matter how many speeches in an evening. But this is especially true if there are multiple maids of honor. Review your speech with the other maid of honor, if possible, to ensure they’re not too similar. Though, the chances of this happening are slim since you both have entirely different experiences and memories with the couple. If you’re close with the other MOH and giving a speech makes you nervous, you could also organize a joint speech that allows you to bounce jokes off one another and takes some of the pressure off.

How Long Should Your Speech Be?

How many times have you gone to a wedding only for the speeches to drag on? Let’s face it, anything longer than a few minutes seems to drag on. The sweet spot timing-wise is anywhere between two to five minutes. This provides ample time to speak about the couple’s love story, tell a joke or two, and finish with encouraging words.

How Should You End It?

There’s nothing quite like ending on a joke before you ask for a cheers. This will get guests laughing one last time before making a toast to the happy couple.

Maid of Honor Speech Outline

Intro

Start your speech by introducing yourself to guests and explaining your relationship with the bride and/or the couple. While you may know many of them, there will also likely be people you’ve yet to meet.

A Word of Thanks

Once you’ve introduced yourself, thank the couple and anyone you deem deserves a thank you (such as the newlyweds’ parents or anyone else who may have contributed to paying for the wedding) for allowing you to be a part of their special day.

Personal Anecdote

This is when you share your favorite memory, joke, or sentiment that will make guests laugh, cry, etc. This could be the story about how you two met, how she came gushing to you when she met the love of her life, etc. Don’t be afraid to get sentimental or bring in some humor. It makes the speech that much more memorable (while also keeping guests entertained).

Encouraging Words

If you have a favorite quote, poem, reading, etc., now is the time to read it. Share some encouraging words for the couple and their new future together.

Closing Remarks

End the speech with one last joke or emotional sentiment before asking guests to raise their glasses in a toast for the happy couple.

Maid of Honor Speech Jokes & One-Liners

Need a little help writing the speech? Consider using some of these examples and tailoring them to your couple! Or include some of these one-liners that are sure to get everyone laughing.

“I met the groom’s parents earlier, and they told me to cut some inappropriate stories out, so nothing about ex-girlfriends…” (drop an index card)…. “alcohol…” (drop another index card) …. “the police….” (drop another index card)…”

“There comes a time in everyone’s life when they meet their one true love, their soulmates. The person that’s going to love them and cherish them for the rest of their life. And that moment came for [Bride’s Name]…[dramatic effect pause] When she met me 25 years ago.”

“Everyone says this is meant to be the best day of your life, but I know it isn’t. It’s the best day of your life SO FAR because I know you have so many more amazing days to come together.”

“I know I’m not supposed to speak for more than 45 minutes, so I’m just going to apologize now for going over a little.”

“The best thing about being in love is hearing someone say ‘I love you’ for the first time…but the second best thing is hearing them say it again after they already know everything about you.”

“All those among you who know the bride will know that she is a wonderful and caring person. She deserves a good partner. Thank God *insert partner’s name* married her before she found one.”

“I can only say in my defense that [Bride] and I share a common sense of humor, so if this speech isn’t funny, blame her.”

“Here’s to the health of the happy pair; may good luck follow them everywhere; And may each day of wedded bliss be always as sweet and joyous as this.”

Modern Greenhouse Two Rivers Wedding Inspiration Full of Florals

August 11, 2023 | justine

Nowadays, many couples opt for a cozy and private wedding. But don’t think for a moment that a smaller celebration means a less magical day, especially when you have trusted pros to make your wedding dreams come true. Courtney Jean Weddings led a team of wedding experts to create this Greenhouse Two Rivers wedding inspiration to showcase the venue’s new ceremony space using a classic color palette, lush florals, greenery,  and understated decor.

The talented team set the scene for a beautiful vow exchange with elegant ghost chairs and grounded arrangements lining the aisle. Floral pillars beautifully framed the real-life couple, adding to the moment’s magic. The romance soared to new heights as the celebration moved to the all-glass reception area. The tablescape was a vision in all-white, with tasteful touches of earthy accents, complemented by greenery installations.

And not only that, the pair’s attire perfectly complements the chic theme—with Makenna in a bell-sleeved plunge dress and Caleb in a classic black suit. If you’re looking for inspiration on elevating your modern wedding style, keep scrolling down to see more captured by Junebug member Tatum Nelson.

Junebug Member Tatum Nelson’s Thoughts On This Greenhouse Two Rivers Wedding Inspiration

Greenhouse Two Rivers just launched their brand new ceremony site, and a team of over 25 vendors came together to help promote their new space. Lauren and Caleb Greenberg started this project over a year ago with a big vision for the next step in their already beautiful venue. This is a beautiful inspiration for an intimate wedding of 24 people. With early textures and timeless elegance, the goal is always to make people feel like this space was made just for them, whether they are a guest, couple, or vendor. You are seen and thought of through every detail, and we are so excited for all the future clients to work with.

A Sentimental Styled Shoot: Reliving Memories While Promoting The Space

The amazing part of this shoot was that our couple, Caleb and Makenna, were married at Greenhouse Two Rivers before the new site was opened. So we brought them back with all their friends to relive the memories. We danced the night away, ate great food, and celebrated the grand reveal with a styled shoot. Courtney Jean Weddings led the team and brought this whole vision to life. Her vision was to bring an earthy elegance through textures, neutral tones, and the natural greens of the venue. She executed all of the designs for the shoot, along with all the logistics.

Capturing The Incredible Architecture of the New Space and the Incredible Floral Artistry

Tatum Nelson was the lead photographer who beautifully captured all the designed details and the new space. The space had not yet been photographed, so she had the freedom to be creative. From taking the couple out for a cigar session to being their biggest hype woman, Tatum truly captured the love shared between these two beautiful souls. Rosewood Floral blew it out of the park with all the tablescape and ceremony florals and installed all of the greenery in the new ceremony space. She is a true visionary when it comes to event design.

The Ultimate Itinerary for a Destination Wedding in Cabo

August 10, 2023 | marissa
Grand Velas Los Cabos resort

View from the Grand Velas lobby.

By our third day in Cabo, I still couldn’t distinguish whether I was experiencing reality or a remarkably vivid fever dream. The endless open skies, rolling turquoise waves, and engulfing sense of serenity can do that to you. I was lucky enough to travel with Lexi–Junebug Wedding’s Marketing Director–to two neighboring properties outside the San Jose del Cabo area to experience their wedding packages first-hand. Upon arrival,  it was immediately evident that Mar del Cabo and Grand Velas would be idyllic locations for a destination wedding. To get married at either is to get married in paradise.

Our luxurious experience began from the moment we landed. The following four days were full of sun, cocktails, and exquisite food. And most notably, the employees and staff were unbeliveably friendly, thoughtful, and supremely dedicated—the kind of people you trust to bring your wedding vision to life. While the scenery was picturesque and the food delicious, it was truly the hospitality that made our stay unforgettable.

After experiencing everything these hotels had to offer, Lexi and I designed the ideal destination wedding itineraries for each property. Mar del Cabo is a stunning boutique hotel with a more intimate vibe, while Grand Velas is a large, luxurious resort perfect for big celebrations. So whatever you envision, we hope these schedules can be a stepping stone to planning your dream Cabo wedding.

Intimate Destination Wedding at Mar del Cabo

Mar del Cabo is a quaint boutique hotel with immeasurable charm. The property feels like a beautiful mesh of coastal Mexico and Santorini with its bright white walls, blue doorways, terracotta tile roofs, and endless bougainvillea. The property is for ages 16 and up–though if you rent out the hotel for your wedding, children of all ages can join. There are 46 suites and two penthouses, a restaurant, a large pool, an upstairs terrace, private beach access, and a garden overlooking the ocean. It’s one of the most magical settings for an intimate destination wedding we’ve witnessed.

Day One: Check-in and Welcome Party

Have your guests arrive in San Jose del Cabo mid-day and settle into their cozy suites at their own pace. They can explore the property, lounge on the beach, and grab lunch at Encanto before the welcome party at 7:30 pm. The pool bar is the perfect space to host the event. Just add hightop tables, a DJ, and a few extra lights. Kick off a fun weekend by mingling with your loved ones while the sun sets.

Day Two: Pool Party and Rehearsal Dinner

Your guests can start their day with breakfast at Encanto before a 1 pm pool party. And, if you can make it happen, we highly recommend catching the sunrise at least one of the mornings you’re there. You won’t regret it. Guests can order lunch and drinks while swimming–that’s right, staff will serve you on floating trays in the pool.

Have brunch served at Mar del Cabo’s pool.

Hold the wedding rehearsal at 6 pm with a rehearsal dinner on the Encanto Terrace at 8 pm. Live music would be a great addition to this gorgeous space. And for dinner, you can’t go wrong with serving Encanto’s tasty taco and cocktail pairings.

Day Three: It’s Wedding Day!

On the big day, keep the schedule light and flexible. Guests can even venture off into the city while you relax at the property. One of the two Mar del Cabo penthouses is an ideal wedding suite for the bride and her bridesmaids. Set the ceremony for 5 pm on the Sun Terrace, a beautiful elevated grassy area that overlooks the Sea of Cortez. Cocktail hour can follow on the Patio del Mar, then the reception on the beach. You’ll dance the night away on a private beach underneath the stars.

Junebug Tip: Don’t forget to sneak away with your photographer for some golden hour portraits throughout the property during the reception!

Day Four: Brunch & Check-out

Have a final brunch at Encanto before checkout.

Elegant Destination Wedding at Grand Velas Los Cabos

If you envision a bigger–and dare I say grander–event, Grand Velas Los Cabos may be the venue for you. Grand Velas is the only 5-star all-inclusive resort in all of Los Cabos. And don’t let preconceived notions of ‘all-inclusive’ fool you. This resort is the epitome of modern luxury, filled with contemporary art, beautiful architecture, and premium amenities. With seven restaurants, three pools, an enormous spa, and fun, daily activities, every day at Grand Velas will bring something new. And with professional nannies and childcare available, the whole family can join the party.

Day One: Check-in and a Beach Party

Grand Velas offers the ultimate check-in experience for wedding parties. You can skip the public–but exquisite–lobby and get escorted to a private bar for a welcome drink with your guests. Have the wedding rehearsal start at 4 pm and then head to the Velas 10 Beach for an elevated picnic experience at 6 pm. After the beach picnic, guests can head to one of the resort’s bars for a nightcap, such as Koi Bar or Sky Bar.

Day Two: The Wedding Day!

We suggest holding the ceremony on Friday, which leaves you a stress-free weekend to have fun and let loose! You undoubtedly have to begin your wedding day at the SE Spa, absorbing the serene atmosphere in the spa’s bridal suite. This 35,000 sq. ft. spa is a treat you can’t skip. Get a therapeutic massage or facial, then experience the water journey with your girls. You won’t regret it.

Set your ceremony in the Azul Garden for 6 pm. Next, we suggest you hold your reception upstairs at the Terrazza del Mar (the largest oceanfront terrace in all of Los Cabos).  Both of these spots offer plenty of space and breathtaking views.

Day Three: Yacht Excursion

If you still aren’t convinced of Grand Velas’s extravagance, maybe the property’s private yacht will do the trick. You and your guests can take the Bella Yacht onto the Sea of Cortez for the ultimate post-wedding celebration. This day is all about letting go of the stress and enjoying yourself! Once your sea excursion is over, check out one of Grand Velas’ five gourmet dinner restaurants. You can’t go wrong with any choice, but we recommend Lucca or Cocina de Artur as great farewell dinner spots.

Day Four: Beach Brunch & Goodbyes

For your last morning in Cabo, have a group brunch on Azul Beach. Soak up the sun, sand, and waves a final time before heading home.

We can’t thank the teams at Mar del Cabo and Grand Velas enough for opening their doors to us. Lexi and I haven’t stopped raving about our trip since getting home.

Remember, the two itineraries above are just our suggestions, and any wedding plan is possible at either hotel. The properties’ dedicated wedding staff have the utmost skill, experience, and passion; you could not be in better hands. Cheers to planning your unforgettable wedding celebration!
