This Alabama Wedding Was a Modern and Effortless Celebration of Home

September 1, 2025 | justine

Some love stories take years to unfold. Others begin with a swipe and a spark. For Chloe and Haley, it started during the thick of 2020. Texting through lockdowns, followed by a first date at a coffee shop in Haley’s hometown. “We finished our coffees and talked until the streetlights came on,” they shared. Just two weeks later, they were officially a couple. Different in many ways but open from the beginning, they found in each other a love rooted in honesty, vulnerability, and shared joy.

When it came time to plan their Alabama wedding, they knew they wanted it to feel like home. “We really leaned into the ‘vibe’ aspect of things. We wanted something classic, easy, and beautiful. We also wanted our guests to feel relaxed and able to enjoy themselves.” The result was a heartfelt, down-to-earth celebration that honored not just their relationship but also the Florence, Alabama community that shaped them.

Why a Flexible Venue Was Key to Pulling Off Their Celebration

For their Alabama wedding venue, the couple chose Pickett Place, a historic home with plenty of personality and space. It offered the perfect mix of character and functionality– especially when it came to last-minute rain plans.

“Because of the rain, our venue had to flip the ceremony space in an hour into our reception dinner,” Chloe shared. “It was honestly magical to walk into the room again and see it transformed into a completely different vibe.” Even with the weather curveball, every space, from photo nooks to dance floors, felt intentionally used.

They kicked off the wedding weekend with a laid-back yet memorable rehearsal at the GunRunner Hotel: cocktails, appetizers, and karaoke that lasted late into the night. “We loved staying there in the past, and knew it was essential for setting the tone of the weekend.”

Bringing Personality Into Their Wedding Fashion

Haley’s wedding look was a standout moment. “She knew she wanted a suit that celebrated her androgynous style. Something bridal but a little Elvis, a little Brandi Carlile,” Chloe explained. She found it in a perfectly tailored Cinq à Sept suit.

Chloe, meanwhile, didn’t start with a vision for a dress, but her mom found the one: a classic and minimal design from Estee’ Couture Bridal at Birch on Main.

Bridesmaids were invited to express themselves in spring greens, blues, florals, and textured styles, resulting in an effortlessly coordinated look. Hair and makeup by Paris Jackson and Audrie Klavas Beauty rounded out the aesthetic, creating a comfortable and radiant vibe for everyone.

A Rainy First Look That Set the Tone

Before the ceremony, Chloe and Haley shared a private first look on the front steps of Pickett Place under a soft rain. “We were on the fence about a first look, but now we look back on it as one of our favorite moments from the day,” they said. “Milly did a great job of really making this time private between the two of us, while still capturing such a special moment.”

Making the Ceremony Personal With Poetry and Tradition

The indoor ceremony space was transformed into a romantic floral setting, with white hydrangeas and greenery framing a brick fireplace. Surrounded by family and friends, Chloe and Haley exchanged vows in a ceremony led by a close friend.

“We wanted our ceremony to feel reverent, full of love, and true to us.” It opened with a ring-warming ritual and included a surprise poem, Her, Her, Her by Caitlyn Siehl, chosen by Haley and read aloud. A special detail: their mothers handed them the rings, a meaningful gesture that tied the ceremony back to family.

Celebrating Community Through Their Vendor Team

From the start, Chloe and Haley prioritized working with vendors who felt like part of their story, people from Florence who brought their own artistry and heart to the day. “Above the aesthetics of our wedding, we really wanted to pull from all of the reasons we love Florence.” That meant keeping it local, starting with their photographer Junebug vendor Milly Baine of The Rose Reflective.

“Not only is she incredible at what she does, she went above and beyond to help make our day what it was and preserve the feeling of our wedding.” Their engagement session with Milly months prior helped them feel comfortable and confident going into the big day.

They also discovered other LGBTQ-friendlyvendors through a resource on Milly’s site—like their second shooter, Scotty Simpkins Photo, and farm-to-table caterer Odette, one of their go-to spots for birthdays and anniversaries. “They couldn’t have been more of a joy to work with. Especially Brittany Bullion who was always available to answer questions and coordinated details we never would have thought of.”

Florals by Susan Rowe of Flori Design Co. reflected the couple’s love for natural elegance. White hydrangeas, found often in their home, served as the floral anchor. “She even brought in flowers from her own garden, which we loved.”

Ending the Day With Meaning, Music, and Connection

After the ceremony, Chloe and Haley stepped away for a quick moment of peace. “We highly recommend it. We needed a moment to look at each other and say ‘wow, we did it!’” Guests moved into a reception space that was transformed with candlelight, fresh greenery, and local blooms cascading across tabletops and the sweetheart table. The color palette of soft greens and whites kept the vibe airy and welcoming.

Handmade touches, like a welcome sign by a family friend and all the printed materials designed by Haley’s sister, added meaning throughout. After a delicious meal and moving speeches, Haley sabred champagne to kick off the dancing. Their first dance to Brandi Carlile’s I Belong to You wrapped the night in romance.

And of course, they didn’t stop there. Guests returned to the GunRunner for a cozy afterparty, ending the Alabama wedding weekend exactly how Chloe and Haley imagined it: relaxed, joyful, and full of love.

Lessons Learned From a Rainy-Day Alabama Wedding

Rain plans matter. “Unless your wedding is in the middle of the desert, have a rain plan and talk about it with all of your vendors beforehand.”

Make space for connection. “Above all else, make time to have little moments alone with your new spouse. We remember those the most out of the night.”

Do the first look. “You won’t regret it.”

A Romantic Vineyard Wedding in Portugal’s Enchanting Douro Valley

August 30, 2025 | justine

When Meagan and Cody got engaged in Portugal, they left with more than a ring. They left with a dream. The country’s beauty, culture, and colors captivated them so deeply that they decided to return with their closest loved ones for a wedding unlike any other. Their vineyard wedding in Portugal’s Douro Valley was intimate, vibrant, and deeply personal, blending the timeless charm of azulejos blue tiles with golden sunset light and heartfelt family moments.

Their love story began in the fall of 2019, and just three weeks in, Meagan told Cody she loved him. The world soon shut down, but their relationship flourished as they moved in together and built a life during a pandemic. By the time they got engaged in 2022, they knew exactly where they wanted to say “I do”—among Portugal’s terracotta rooftops and vine-covered hillsides.

What We Love About This Vineyard Wedding:

  • Azulejos-inspired color palette of blue, gold, cream, and green
  • DIY welcome dinner with custom napkins and wine bottle candle decor
  • A surprise groom serenade during the reception
  • Personalized wedding souvenirs like hand-painted Portuguese tiles
  • A last-minute venue change that turned out to be fate

Making the Wedding Weekend Feel Like a Getaway

With around 30 loved ones flying in from abroad, Meagan and Cody made it a priority to create an experience and not just a wedding. From group accommodations and shared meals to a post-wedding boat tour in Porto, every element of the weekend was designed to make guests feel welcome, included, and immersed in the beauty of Portugal.

The celebration began with a welcome dinner at Casa de Vilela. “We hired a private chef and brought over decorations in a suitcase,” Meagan shared. “We wanted it to feel vibrant, messy, and fun.” Guests were asked to dress in neutral tones, setting the stage for a warm and cohesive atmosphere. Long tables were decorated with wine bottles holding taper candles, fresh fruits and vegetables, and custom cups and napkins made ahead of time. The relaxed dinner featuring homemade pizzas, wings, salads, and a self-serve bar with Portuguese beer, wine, and gin and tonics—set the tone for the weekend. The night ended the way all great nights should: with everyone jumping into the pool and stargazing together.

From Heirlooms to First Looks: Meaning in Every Detail

Every style choice Meagan and Cody made carried a bit of personality, history, or intention. Cody wore a custom blue suit from Milbern Clothing Co., chosen to match the wedding’s azulejos-inspired color palette.

Meagan wore a Luxe Bridal gown for the ceremony, doing her own makeup as a nod to her passion for beauty. Her hair, styled in homage to Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, added a romantic, vintage feel. She completed the look with a pearl necklace passed down from her grandmother, an heirloom that brought a quiet depth to her ensemble.

But before the day unfolded, the couple shared a quiet first look under a tree on the property—an emotional, grounding moment that set the tone for everything to come.

 A Douro Valley Ceremony

The florals and decor leaned into the natural beauty of the venue, enhancing it without overpowering it. A lush floral arch framed the ceremony space, setting the tone for a day that felt both grounded and magical. “Our venue was magical,” they said. “It felt like a true reflection of Portugal’s charm and history.”

The ceremony itself was deeply personal and officiated by Meagan’s aunt, adding a meaningful family connection. Meagan and Cody exchanged their own vows and included a heartfelt reading of Neil Gaiman’s All I Know About Love, read by the groom’s sister, Kaitlyn. After the ceremony, instead of rushing off, the couple took a quiet moment together, sitting on the yellow chairs where they had just said “I do,” and watching their guests laugh and mingle in the sun.

Layering Meaning Into Every Part of the Their Vineyard Wedding Reception

As the sun dipped behind the hills, guests wrapped up cocktail hour, which featured breezy tunes from a violinist, passed appetizers, and a well-stocked bar. Meanwhile, Meagan and Cody changed into their second outfits and made their reception entrance to joyful applause. The evening unfolded with a multi-course meal, heartfelt speeches from their parents, and soft breezes floating through the open balcony doors.

Reception tables featured blooms and playful table lamps that added warmth and dimension to the space. Personal touches continued throughout. Jen, a family member, designed a custom wedding logo that appeared across the weekend, while Emma created a linen welcome sign that floated gently in the breeze. At each place setting, guests found hand-painted azulejos tiles from Porto. Thoughtful keepsakes that tied together the aesthetic and cultural thread of their vineyard wedding beautifully.

For the reception, Cody opted for a more laid-back look with a crisp white shirt and his tailored blue pants, striking the perfect balance between style and ease. Meagan changed into the Emma dress by V. Chapman, perfect for dancing the night away.

One of the most unforgettable moments? Cody serenaded Meagan with “Downtown” by Majical Cloudz, a favorite song they share. “I cried,” Meagan admitted.

After dinner, guests were served espresso and invited into a dreamy dessert room filled with treats they still talk about. Then it was time to head downstairs to keep the celebration going with music, dancing, and late-night snacks.

Overcoming Last-Minute Changes With Flexibility and Grace

Planning a vineyard wedding from across the world came with its fair share of challenges. But nothing could’ve prepared Meagan and Cody for what happened just days before the big day. “While we were on a layover in Frankfurt, we found out that our venue was no longer available.” Wildfires had impacted the space they’d spent over a year planning around. “We panicked. We didn’t have a venue, accommodations, or even a space for our welcome dinner.”

But then, something unexpected fell into place. They discovered Casa de Vilela, a 1700s estate nestled in Portugal’s Douro Valley that just happened to be available. “It felt like it was meant to be.” The estate not only housed many of their guests, it also provided separate spaces for each part of the celebration. All while showcasing the charm and beauty they loved about Portugal.

Their advice for other couples planning abroad? “Video chat with every vendor to make sure you’re a good fit, and try to speak with couples who’ve worked with them before.” And most importantly, they added, “Be open to change. Things might go wrong, but what matters most is the people you’re with and the love you’re celebrating.”
