A Gilded Age–Inspired Lightner Museum Wedding in America’s Oldest City

December 26, 2025 | justine

Tiffany and Ryan envisioned a wedding that felt like stepping into a romantic film set inside a museum. Gilded Age glamour, Art Nouveau curves, and rich golden tones came together at the historic Lightner Museum in St. Augustine. With soaring arches and the former swimming pool transformed into a reception space, the venue set the tone, while candlelight, live strings, and thoughtful details reflected their love of art and travel.

Their story began years earlier in Tallahassee, where they met while attending Florida State University. After Ryan famously crashed on Tiffany’s couch one night, the two reconnected at a party weeks later, bonding over a ping pong ball drinking game and talking until the early hours. A first date that pivoted from a closed brunch spot to tacos and coffee sealed it. From there, they grew through college, weathered COVID in a cozy bubble, adopted their senior dog Elroy, and built a life shaped by shared routines and travel. Years later, Ryan proposed on the steps of the Met in New York City, setting the stage for a museum wedding that felt unmistakably like them.

What We Love About This Lightner Museum Wedding

  • A Gilded Age and Art Nouveau–inspired design
  • A rainbow bridal party palette inspired by Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss and the museum’s lobby floor
  • Travel postcards turned into a guestbook, plus custom matchbooks as nostalgic favors
  • Live strings, DJ, saxophone, and surprise vocals that turned the night into a full-on show
  • Thrifted and embroidered details, from button-downs to brooches, that highlighted Tiffany’s love of making things by hand
  • A senior dog “mascot” cocktail, Florida-themed Hawaiian shirts, and captain’s hats that brought playful energy to the reception

Designing a Gilded Age–Inspired Museum Wedding

“I was inspired by the venue, the city, and the Art Nouveau era,” Tiffany shared. “It’s so romantic and dreamy. We loved the devotion to craftsmanship and the ethereal, nature-focused approach to architecture and art.” Those influences carried through the invitation suite, signage, and matchbook favors.

Color played a central role. Inspired by the museum’s lobby floor and Klimt’s The Kiss, Tiffany envisioned a “rainbow entourage,” with bridesmaids in wild rose, sage, marigold, and dusty blue, and her youngest sister in lilac. Florals echoed the palette in softer tones, while candlelight warmed the space.

Choosing the Right Venue in Florida’s Summer Heat

From the start, they knew they’d marry in Florida so family and friends could travel easily. With loved ones spread across the state, they focused on cities with strong airports and venues near their parents’ homes in Orlando and St. Augustine.

They also had a clear non-negotiable. “We knew we wanted a summer wedding, so looking for a venue that was mostly indoors was necessary,” Tiffany explained. Touring the Lightner Museum confirmed it. Even after seeing other options, every comparison led back to it.

Once the venue was chosen, planning felt more focused. The museum’s historic nature came with a curated vendor list, simplifying decisions and allowing them to prioritize fit over excess choice.

Setting the Tone With a Relaxed Rehearsal and Welcome Night

The celebration began the day before the wedding. After a morning rehearsal, Tiffany and Ryan hosted a rehearsal dinner at The Raintree. Ryan’s dad opened the evening with a heartfelt speech, welcoming Tiffany’s family and sharing how proud he was of Ryan.

After dinner, they walked back to their hotel for a welcome reception, then headed out with friends to a few local bars. With a later ceremony start time the next day, the relaxed pace helped them unwind and sleep well—an approach Tiffany recommends for avoiding pre-wedding stress.

A First Look on a Bridge of Stones From Around the World

Before the ceremony, Tiffany shared a quiet first look with her dad, allowing space for the emotions of the day. She then met Ryan in the courtyard for their first look as a couple.

They chose a bridge made of stones collected from around the world, a fitting place to exchange private vows given how central travel is to their story. Ryan waited in excited anticipation as Tiffany tapped his shoulder. They shared memories, tears, and laughter as they read their vows. Ryan became overwhelmed with emotion. “At one point, I gave him a hug and held him and that really comforted him,” Tiffany remembered.

Before guests arrived, they slipped away to see the venue completely empty—looking down into the swimming pool space, spotting the checked dance floor and gelato cart, and taking in the final details. It gave them a quiet moment before the celebration began.

A Candlelit Ceremony Filled With Laughter and Tears

The ceremony took place in the former swimming pool space of the Lightner Museum, with candles lining the aisle and live strings setting a romantic tone. When Tiffany walked in, she tried to avoid looking at Ryan or her bridesmaids, worried she’d cry and ruin her makeup. She thought the groomsmen would be safer, until she locked eyes with Ryan’s brother Kyle, who was crying harder than anyone. Somehow, she held it together.

The ceremony balanced tenderness and humor. Emotional moments were met with genuine laughter, and seeing friends and family from every stage of their lives seated together felt surreal. “You see your close relatives sitting next to your childhood friend sitting next to your college friends sitting next to your soon-to-be cousins-in-law,” they shared. “It’s a group of people your eyes can’t picture in the same room outside of a dream.”

Navigating Surprises With Humor and Grace

Even with thoughtful planning, a few moments went off-script. At the start of the ceremony, guests weren’t told to sit, so they remained standing until a bridesmaid quietly alerted the officiant. He addressed it calmly, and everyone laughed as they took their seats. Tiffany and Ryan didn’t notice in the moment.

Later, Tiffany’s mom realized she’d forgotten her reading glasses before the blessing. Tiffany’s dad sprinted across the venue to retrieve them as guests cheered, turning a small hiccup into one of the night’s sweetest memories.

Summer Wedding Fashion That Embraced Color and Comfort

Tiffany approached dress shopping with an open mind. “I tried on every style under the sun,” she said. She ultimately chose an A-line gown with a cat’s-eye neckline, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and a dramatic train from The Bridal Finery in Orlando (Khya). Detachable sleeves allowed her to change up the look and dance freely. She wore her hair in a secure, romantic low bun with soft face-framing pieces and a “me but better” makeup look.

“What screams summer and June to me was unapologetic color,” Tiffany shared. Bridesmaids wore solid dresses in wild rose, sage, marigold, dusty blue, and lilac, each choosing silhouettes that felt comfortable and true to them.

Ryan and the groomsmen wore classic black suits accented with thrifted floral brooches that matched the bridesmaids’ colors. Later, the groomsmen changed into Florida-themed Duvin Hawaiian shirts and captain’s hats, creating one of the night’s most memorable style moments.

Prioritizing Budget Around Food, Drinks, and Fun

When it came to budgeting, Tiffany and Ryan focused on what mattered most. “The things that mattered most to us were the venue, the entertainment, and the food and drinks,” they shared. With such a striking space, they didn’t feel the need to overdecorate.

Instead, they invested in experiences: live strings for the ceremony, a DJ and saxophonist for the party, and a photobooth guests loved. The menu was generous and flavorful, paired with thoughtful signature cocktails. “Though we definitely could have added more decor and things to fill the space, our focus was on our people having a good time with us,” Tiffany said.

Personal Details That Made the Day Feel Like Them

Many of the most meaningful touches were shaped long before the wedding. Tiffany’s love of thrifting and crafting showed up throughout the day. She thrifted men’s button-down shirts in colors matching the bridesmaids’ dresses and learned to embroider their names and tiny hearts onto the sleeves. She also secretly embroidered their wedding date and a love note inside Ryan’s tuxedo jacket.

Their guestbook came from years of travel: postcards they never sent. Guests chose cards tied to places they lived or visited and wrote messages on the back. Custom matchbooks echoed their invitation designs and nodded to their habit of collecting matchbooks from favorite restaurants.

Signature cocktails added another personal layer. Tiffany chose a French 75, Ryan opted for an extra dirty gin martini, and their shared specialty drink—the Paper Plane—featured their senior dog Elroy as the mascot.

Turning the Reception Into an All-Night Celebration

The reception was, in their words, “an absolute rager.” Speeches set the tone, from Rosa’s heartfelt maid-of-honor tribute to Ryan’s brother Kyle’s emotional toast. Tiffany’s dad welcomed everyone, and her mom’s blessing turned into a crowd favorite when she realized she’d forgotten her reading glasses—prompting a sprint across the venue and plenty of cheers.

Dinner was buffet-style, and once plates were cleared, the dance floor stayed full. The DJ and saxophonist mixed hits across generations as a conga line wound through the space. Inflatable instruments made the rounds, followed by a second act of Hawaiian shirts, captain’s hats, and even higher energy.

Later, Ryan’s mom’s best friend took the mic for “Mamma Mia” and “Proud Mary.” During “Love Story” by Taylor Swift, guests formed a circle around Tiffany and Ryan, singing along before erupting into cheers. They closed the night with a private last dance to “Lover,” followed by a sparkler exit down the outdoor staircase. “Running up and down the steps surrounded by friends and family holding sparklers was pure magic,” they shared.

Advice for Couples Planning Their Own Lightner Museum Wedding

Looking back, Tiffany and Ryan see their wedding as an extension of the life they’ve built together—creative, intentional, and joyful.

“Marriage is often described as a compromise,” Tiffany said, “but I think the bigger lesson is understanding what you’re not willing to compromise on. If something truly matters to you, communicate that clearly to your partner.”

On the wedding day, they encourage couples to stay present. “There will always be unexpected twists, but rolling with them will make the day even more memorable. It’s your celebration. Embrace it fully.”

Their final reminder is simple: protect your time together. “Talk, laugh, and dance with each other as much as you can. Those are the memories you’ll cherish most.”
