We’re in Pinterest Heaven Over This DIY Farm Wedding in Pennsylvania

March 3, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

A potentially haunted private farmhouse estate, vintage lounge furniture, and literally all the handmade wedding decor you could possibly dream up? We’re all in for Taigen and Dan’s incredible DIY farm wedding in Pennsylvania! Because the couple’s ceremony took place outside and their reception was set up under a sailcloth tent, they weren’t restricted to a particular look or theme and allowed them to create a completely custom vibe that was equal parts rustic, elegant, and eclectic. Cindy Bee Floral added beautiful pops of florals to round out the look, and Cody Kurtz Photography captured it all in perfectly! From the homegrown eucalyptus to the handmade signs and every little detail in between, we’re confident this wedding will be filling up your Pinterest boards in no time.

The Couple:

Taigen and Dan

The Wedding:

Private Estate, Muncy, Pennsylvania

My favorite wedding day memory was the first look. Known for their work ethic, grit, and rough hands, one thing farmers are seldom regarded as are fashion insiders. I’d show him wedding dress photos on social media and blogs to get a feel for what he liked. After learning what he did and did not fancy, I feared I’d have to marry him in a cotton sundress instead of the extravagant gown I’d always imagined. Besides, since the glitz and glam of NYC took me away from Dan and the farm for a while, he much prefers me in muck boots and a tee shirt than a dress and lipstick. This made it hard for me to envision his reaction when he first saw me in my Enzoani gown.

The photographer chose a location on the property that was a few miles away from our ceremony and reception site, away from the chaos of vendors and family setting up. With gorgeous views of the Appalachian mountains and soybean fields, our first look site was on a private country road that leads to one of the barns on the property. Dan was facing the other direction, forbidden to turn around as I slowly made my way closer to him. I felt my long train dragging and anticipation with each step as I neared the man who wrote “Marry You Later” in my yearbook ten years ago, the man I would wake up next to every morning for the rest of my life. When Dan turned around, his eyes started to water and he picked me up in the most genuine embrace and said under his breath “you look so beautiful” almost like he was thinking out loud. The photographer captured this moment perfectly.

While the catering, the dress, and the timeline — among other wedding components — were certainly important, I’d say the most important part in planning our wedding was the decorations. I believe the look and feel of a wedding sets the tone for everything else. We opted for an open-air cocktail hour and sailcloth tent reception. This meant we were not confined to the sometimes-stringent requirements of a venue but were tasked with the challenge of turning a blank canvas into a beautiful, inviting space for our guests. There were no wooden floors, walls with character or fun lighting fixtures, just nature and a whole lot of endless possibilities for showcasing our personalities through the layout and décor.

Dan is a third generation farmer, so when it came time to look for wedding venues, he mentioned one of the beautiful properties where his family leases farmland. I remember seeing it before and being in awe of the beauty, so it didn’t take much convincing for me to agree that we should ask about hosting our wedding there. It was really neat to say our “I do’s” in front of a soybean field that Dan cultivates every summer — not to mention, dying soybeans make for beautiful yellow and green foliage in the fall!

The private property is owned by Malcolm Barlow. Malcolm is a distinguished, gentleman farmer who retired after years of working for a pharmaceutical company in Philadelphia. This was Malcolm’s childhood home. He moved here at the age of 5 after being shipped to his new caregivers, when he escaped WWII from England with his siblings. In addition to surviving Indian raids, making it the oldest home in Lycoming County, the property is home to one of the oldest iron bridges in the united states. When digging up the ground for a pool on the west side of the home (where we said our vows), the previous landowners were astonished to find the bodies of a redcoat soldier and a Native American, furthering questions as to whether the original homeowner, Samuel Wallis, was playing both sides during the Revolutionary War. The home is even is rumored to have a ghost that makes itself readily known to guests who stay the night. If walls could talk, these walls would have many tales to tell and I’m proud to have our love story on the list (as low as it may be).

Because our rentals were deemed important enough to eat up a chunk of the décor budget, I challenged myself and my husband to DIY everything that we could. Dan’s family farm stand boasts a large greenhouse so we grew our own eucalyptus to help cut floral costs. We avoided paying hundreds of dollars on a neon sign by making our own personalized sign using an acrylic slab, neon rope, an electric drill, and gaffers tape.

The place cards, guest itinerary’s (included in hotel goodie bags), and bar menus were self-designed and hand-ripped to achieve a deckled edge. Dan’s sister is a talented calligrapher who designed our invite envelopes. She inspired me to tackle the calligraphy on the ceremony and event signage chalkboards. Using faux eucalyptus and grapevine wreaths, I made eucalyptus wreaths of varying sizes. I planned to layer and suspend these over the dance floor using fishing wire, but I ended up hanging them elsewhere due to time constraints and insufficient structures within the tent.

Our saving grace was the talent of my husband. When he’s not tending to crops, Dan moonlights as a carpenter. He whipped up the products on my “honey-do list” in no time. Our favorite DIY project was the airstream photo booth. I had a list of potential photobooth vendors but kept going back to these van photobooths and airstream photobooths, perfect for outdoor weddings. The only downfall of these little beauties is that they can cost you upwards of thousands of dollars. Instead, I reached out to my friend and bridesmaid whose husband had just refurbished their airstream a few years prior. She gladly obliged to loan the airstream to us. I minimalized and decorated the interior with a shag rug, fake plant and stacked books. I command stripped marquee letters reading “PHOTOS” to the outside and left a little bar cart by the entrance for guest drinks and props. I ended up only spending a few hundred dollars for a DIY photobooth, Booth by Mail. Even the photobooth attendant was a sort of DIY project. I had met a gentleman at a wedding the weekend before ours and he said he’d love to attend my wedding to see all my “babe friends” from NYC. I called his bluff when I offered him a seat next to mutual friends and unlimited drinks if he agreed to be my photobooth attendant. Voila! I had our own airstream photo booth that guests loved!

My advice would be to put in the hard work months prior and create/share your timeline with all vendors and the bridal party so the day-of you can be blissfully in the moment. I created a spreadsheet with a tab for each aspect of my wedding (guest list, timeline, budget, catering, decorations, DIY projects, rentals, etc. I referenced that spreadsheet every day and made a point to wedding plan at least one hour per day, 4 days per week. I started planning 8 months prior.

Naturally Elegant Burgundy and Cream Estes Park Wedding at The Stanley Hotel

February 11, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

As history buffs and Rocky Mountain lovers, there was no better place for Julian and Robert to start the beginning of their forever than at one of Colorado’s most historic and iconic venues, The Stanley Hotel! Nestled in Estes Park, the epic views and old-world charm of this hotel fit the couple’s understated yet impeccably designed vibe brilliantly. Not only did it offer an intimate indoor space for both the ceremony and reception, but it allowed Julian, Robert, and all their guests to have a true “wedding vacation,” complete with yoga, a ghost tour, and herds of elk! Prisma Events did a phenomenal job planning a magical affair, tying in all the DIY details with the naturally elegant floral designs from The Simple Petal and making it all complement the space perfectly. With so much visual beauty happening, we’ll be eternally grateful that Wild Jasmine Photography was there to capture it all!

The Couple:

Julian and Robert

The Wedding:

The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado

“Honest & Magical” was our mantra as we planned our wedding. We really wanted our wedding weekend to reflect our individual styles but also highlight and share the common things we love. We put together thoughtful welcome baskets of all our favorite things for our guests to enjoy throughout the weekend and handed them out during our welcome reception. The following morning we planned a group yoga class to get us centered, stretched, and ready for the family vs. family softball game (which ended up being our favorite activity we planned). We ditched the traditional rehearsal dinner that night and opted to treat our guests to some local BBQ delicacies at our favorite whiskey distillery followed by a spooky late night ghost tour back at The Stanley Hotel. On our wedding day, we woke up to fields of wild elk at our front door and ended the night with a surprise drag show … it was so magical and perfect!

Our families and friends live all over the US, so we knew traveling would be inevitable. Letting our guests make a fun, memorable vacation out of our wedding was really important to us. We wanted our guests to explore the local sights in Estes Park, which ironically was inundated with elk that time of year, or stay in bed if they wanted. So our wedding invitations and website both had a timeline of activities and events that would be occurring throughout our wedding weekend so that our guests had the option of opting in or out and making the vacation they wanted.

We DIY-ed as much as we possibly could from Miami and shipped/flew with everything to Colorado a week before the big day. For décor, I searched in thrift stores and online for brass candle holders and terrariums (for our table numbers) to place on our tablescapes. We repurposed them after our wedding and now have a few macramé hanging terrariums and candle holders sprinkled throughout our home! All the DIY work was truly a labor of love, so much so that I even began my own Etsy account, Yonder Paper Co., to share and continue to make handmade pieces of work.

Our advice: stay authentic, go for the different, and try to be unique. You can get lost out there with all the wedding planning tools you have at our fingertips, from Pinterest to Instagram to bridal magazines and blogs. The best advice we have is to stay honest and focus on a few things that are really important for each of you to have or see at your wedding and make that the priority. Also, lots of candles is always a good idea!

Colorful ’70s Boho Wedding at The Greenhouse at Driftwood

January 25, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

The ’70s wedding vibes are going strong, and the retro color palette in Ariana and Morgan’s Hill Country wedding at The Greenhouse at Driftwood is our new obsession! A mix of marigold, goldenrod, and red-orange florals designed by Sweetwater Stems popped brilliantly against their boho decor and brought the greenhouse space to life in the most vibrant way. The bride’s custom Elizabeth Leese Bridal gown and the bridesmaids mismatched, floral print dresses were the cherries on top of such an epic design. Every detail, down to the illustrated fans made by Shay MacMorran Art and cornhole set made by the groom, had a bold, slightly tropical, totally retro feel! Luckily for us, The Teagues were on hand to capture every incredible element of this Hill Country summer wedding!

The Couple:

Ariana and Morgan

The Wedding:

The Greenhouse at Driftwood, Driftwood, Texas

Morgan and I grew up in the Hill Country, but we knew we did not want to get married in our hometown of Fredericksburg. We decided to check out the Driftwood area right outside of Austin since it is still apart of the Hill Country and we stumbled upon The Greenhouse at Driftwood. The venue is truly one of kind and gives off the feeling that you’re in the Arizona desert or Joshua Tree, but without actually having to travel to those destinations.

The most important thing to us was that everyone had the night of their lives, which means everyone would have to get their groove on. We decided we really wanted to have a band for our reception and that was by far the best decision we could have made. The Love & Happiness band kept our guests on the dance floor all night. (I think I even saw my Dad on the dance floor at one point, which was shocking!) All in all, we had the best time being surrounded by friends and family and seeing everyone having a good time together it will forever be a highlight.

I think my favorite thing about the entire wedding planning process was getting to work with Elizabeth Leese on my very own custom wedding gown. I knew that I wanted a custom gown pretty early on in the planning process because it would be something that was 110% percent me. From the choosing the design, color, and fabric, the entire process was so fun to be a part of. Having my very own Elizabeth Leese custom gown is something I will always hold dear to my heart.

The Teagues are the most bomb photographer duo on the planet. We were lucky enough to travel with them to Marfa, Texas for our engagement photos and so, by the time the wedding rolled around, we had spent plenty of time together getting to know each other. They truly captured the essence of our day and us as a couple. They ensured that we were never away from our guests or the fun for too long and produced photos that I will truly cherish forever.

There are few things more miserable than the Texas heat so we had custom fans made. Shay MacMorran of Shay MacMorran Art drew this incredible illustration of Morgan, me, and our 3-year-old pup, Ruby. We had the illustration printed onto cardstock and made into fans so that our guests could use them during the ceremony and also take them home as a keepsake. We were also fortunate enough to have Morgan‘s sister bake hundreds of sugar cookies that were cactus shaped (to tie into the greenhouse theme) and also gave those away to guests. They were so beautifully made that one almost felt too guilty to eat them.

Morgan made these incredible cornhole boards so that our guests could have a lawn game to play throughout the evening. The coolest part was that instead of painting a design on the front we decided to use a wallpaper adhesive with banana leaves to tie in with our incredible greenhouse venue.

There were so many amazing memories from the day, but if I had to choose just one then it would be our dance to“Linger” by The Cranberries. The evening is almost coming to an end and the band is taking their final break before their last set. “Linger” comes on and, at this point, Morgan and I are the only two on the dance floor and it all just hits me. There’s a voice in the back of my head telling me to stop and take a mental note of this moment, my surroundings, the faces of our guests, the details, my husband holding onto me, the song, the way I feel; to just stop, breathe, and let it all sink in. Now, I am not a super sentimental person by any means, but what everyone tells you is all so true. The day flew by and this felt like my one moment of just complete peace and absolute stillness where I could take it all in, tell myself to hold on to this exact moment for the rest of my life, and know that everything would always be okay. Needless to say, I was overcome with the amount of love I felt in that moment and couldn’t fight back the tears of just pure happiness!

Modern Rustic Ontario Wedding at Stonefields Estate

November 14, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Danica and Eric’s dual ceremony wedding day at Stonefields Estate was as effortlessly modern as it was rustic! It should come as no surprise that the bride, who is an architect, put together a gorgeous design for the tea ceremony, the wedding ceremony, and the reception. The overall vibe was clean, crisp, and elegant, which they accomplished using a neutral color palette of whites, blues, and greys, an organic floral design created by L’Orangerie Floral Design, and the most delicious dessert bar of mini cakes from Patisserie La Toque. The rustic charm of the venue and the couple’s modern style were a match made in heaven that Agatha Rowland captured brilliantly in every frame.

The Couple:

Danica and Eric

The Wedding:

Stonefields Estate, Ottawa, Ontario

We wanted a wedding under 100 people to keep it intimate and approachable. A lot of our family and friends are spread across the country and the globe, so the most important thing to us was to take this rare opportunity, unite all our loved ones and celebrate this milestone together.

The first look at the Museum of Nature where we had our first date and the little surprise picnic we had just before the dinner reception were the two most memorable part of the entire day!

I am lucky to have a group of talented architecture friends from school, so we DIY-ed as much as we could! I designed all stationary, including invitations, menu and place cards, and the signs. My friend Erica made the handwritten seating chart and the garlands on the sign, as well as the chair swags for the ceremony aisles. My friend Cecilia made the big moss “D&E” letters and helped design the logo for the wax seal stamp. Eric and I purchased all the geometric vases, card boxes, cake stands, table runners and miscellaneous decorations. Lastly, my friend Jimmy designed and hosted the games played throughout the night.

Groom’s Entrance – “Story of My Life” by The Piano Guys
Bridal Party Entrance – “Canon in D” by The Piano Guys
Bride’s Entrance – “Beethoven’s 5 Secrets” by The Piano Guys
Recessional – “Happy” by Pharrell Williams

We wrote our own vows and customized the entire ceremony to suit our relationship. We also added readings and quotes from Winnie the Pooh throughout because that’s the groom’s childhood favourite!

We never thought we would pick a rustic venue, but Stonefields Estate has a modern charm to it and it won us over. It also had the right date so, even though it’s slightly outside of Ottawa, we decided it would be the one!

The venue itself has a lot of character, including two heritage stone houses and a newly constructed barn with a 100-year-old timber structure. Since we picked a rustic yet elegant venue, we wanted to complement it with simple modern elements and floral decor to let the venue shine.

For our wedding favors, we gave each guest shortbread cookies in the theme of Hawaiian dressed bears (female and male version). We wanted something edible, as the bride loves her sweets. We also got engaged in Hawaii and, since the groom loves bears, so we thought this would be a cute way to combine all 3 ideas!

Our first dance was customized and rehearsed by our dance instructor. It was a remix of “A Thousand Years” by Boyce Avenue, “Dance with Me Tonight” by Olly Murs, “Up Town Funk” by Bruno Mars, and “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.

Romantic Rustic San Diego Wedding at BRICK Liberty Station

October 7, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Industrial elegance met rustic chic design in Brianna and Daniel’s San Diego wedding at BRICK Liberty Station! The planners at Bliss Events helped the couple bring their dream wedding to life with lush florals from Organic Elements and rustic farmhouse tables that added a charming yet casual feel to the all-brick venue. The creative couple and their family put their DIY skills to great use creating special details, from the hand-painted tile place cards to the wood and neon ceremony and sweetheart table backdrops. Even amid the chaos of the day, Brianna and Daniel had the chance to sneak away with Dani Purington Photography to enjoy a beer and to take the sweetest newlywed photos. From beginning to end, this San Diego wedding was a total love fest that completely stole our hearts!

The Couple:

Brianna and Daniel

The Wedding:

BRICK Liberty Station, San Diego, California

We wanted our day to reflect us entirely. Rather than a common arch as a focal point of the ceremony, I(bride) asked my dad to make a wooden backdrop, which we decorated with flowers and a neon “Davis” sign to display our last name. Each of the songs throughout our day held so much meaning. Our table numbers were beer growlers, naturally. Instead of a formal cake for everyone, we opted for customizable cookie ice cream sandwiches from a local business. Even the signature drinks — his, jack and coke, hers, spicy margarita — give insight into who we are as a couple.

The most memorable part of the day for us was when we snuck away from all that was going on to have a beer at the Bottlecraft, the beer shop across the street during cocktail hour. We made this time a priority as we knew we’d need a little getaway after the ceremony. The fact that our photographer and videographer were with us was perfect because they captured us in our element. It felt like we could experience our normal in such an abnormal day. We got back to us. We kissed, looked each other in the eye, and said, “Damn, life is good.”

The wedding planning advice that we’d give is to pick your top three priorities and plan those things out perfectly. Everything else will fall into place. The little details truly don’t matter. Things like the stitch on the napkin are things that you won’t remember or fret over a year down the road (or even a week down the road). It’s SO easy to get caught up in the details and pleasing every person on your guest list but the truth is that your guests will think it’s beautiful and you and your spouse will be over the moon. You’ll be officially married. That’s the only thing that matters.

Classic Meets Bohemian Lakefront Wedding at The Suttle Lodge

If you love autumnal florals, classic decor, and romantic waterfront moments, get ready for Candice and Jim’s wedding at The Suttle Lodge to make your heart swell with happiness! The cozy PNW vibes were strong in their outdoor ceremony, which featured a jaw-dropping floral backdrop created by HART Floral Design. The jewel-tone color palette added both a classic elegance and bohemian charm, and the calligraphed signs and place cards Candice made added the sweetest touch of personalization. We can’t get over how beautiful Candice looked in a delicate lace Lihi Hod gown, which perfectly fit the carefree, woodsy, romantic feel of this wedding. We also love that Jim stayed true to his personal style with a classic blue suit and quirky accessories. From the couple’s sweet first look in the woods to their private canoe ride, photographer Katy Weaver was there to capture every dreamy moment of this Oregon wedding!

The Couple:

Candice and Jim

The Wedding:

The Suttle Lodge, Sisters, Oregon

In planning our wedding, our priority was to host a fun and intimate celebration for our family and friends to enjoy with Jim and I. We made sure to stay at each other’s side the entire time and really be present in this magical time we were so fortunate to have with all of our loved ones.

Jim and I became great friends and fell in love while exploring the Pacific Northwest, especially Oregon. We wanted to host our wedding weekend here and have our family and friends truly experience the beauty and natural landscape that is our outdoor playground. We envisioned our wedding ceremony and reception surrounded by forest. The Suttle Lodge near Sisters, Oregon was one of many venues we considered. Ultimately we chose our venue for its rustic but modern “Wes Anderson” vibe on a breathtaking lakefront. We wanted a venue that could accommodate our entire group for a 3-day party including on-site lodging, restaurant/bar and offer outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and campfires.

I did not have official bridesmaids but my closest friends formed a bridal tribe. They each wore a long dress (or suit) in different jewel-colored hues. My ladies and gent created a gorgeous rainbow!

Directly after the ceremony, while our guests enjoyed cocktail hour and made their way to the reception, Jim and I snuck away to our cabin for “introvert” time to celebrate this magical occasion and enjoy a cocktail and snacks.

I was set on refining my calligraphy skills so I could create the signage (welcome, bar menu, dinner menu, seating chart) and dinner setting place cards. I also made the wishing tree. It was enjoyable and cathartic, and I think they turned out pretty good!

I surprised Jim with a 1971 cherry red Volkswagon Bus turned rental photo booth. We loved it! We think our guests did, too, based on the wild photos from this night!

This Couple Used a Muted Color Palette to Incorporate Their Love of the Desert into Their Barr Mansion Wedding in Austin

September 26, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Carrigan and Jared’s wedding at Barr Mansion was a beautiful mix of boho and rustic vibes in muted tones that totally transformed the Austin venue. Their outdoor ceremony was framed with an a-frame arch created by the groom’s father and pampas grass arrangements done by Remi + Gold. Their indoor reception was full of cascading florals, natural textures, whimsical table decor, and handmade place cards. For an additional treat for their guests, Carrigan and Jared also hired one of Austin’s most beloved creative teams, Typewriter Rodeo, to write on-the-spot poems for everyone to take home. We’re totally in love with Carrigan’s romantic lace-top gown from Blue Bridal Boutique and Jared’s stylish velvet suit jacket, which gave the overall feel a modern yet timeless feel. John David Weddings did a phenomenal job capturing every moment of this beautiful Austin wedding!

The Couple:

Carrigan and Jared

The Wedding:

Barr Mansion, Austin, Texas

<

em>We really wanted our wedding to feel and reflect us: a harmonious blend of nature and the outdoors, retro, yet still formal and elegant. We also wanted our wedding to feel almost like another world — from the moment our guests arrived to the moment they left — we wanted everything to be ethereal. It turned out almost medieval, which was totally okay. Guests were greeted with hand-painted banners and a quartet, velvet ribbons, and cascading flowers. We had a feast-style dinner by candlelight and drank wine from goblets. Everything was chosen with a purpose and made it a lot more meaningful to us.

We originally chose very simple white and greys as our wedding colours. Yet, we both love the outdoors and wanted our wedding to reflect deep canyons and wide desert spaces. We used orange and mauve flowers mixed with pampas grass, as well as emerald velvet table tops and rust accents. Who cares that it was spring? We went for the fall colours anyway.

Our photographer was incredible. He got all of the detailed and candid shots you could ever want on your wedding, yet did so unobtrusively. Most of the time you didn’t even notice he was there, yet when you look through the photos it seems like he was in ten places at once. When doing portraits he knew exactly how to pose us efficiently so we didn’t have to take away too much time from our wedding day. on top of that his editing style is exactly what we wanted. I recommend him to everyone!

Poetry and hand-written letters was a large part of our relationship. For our wedding favors, we hired on-the-spot poets who wrote poems for the guests on typewriters! The guests would tell the poets a word or an idea, and within minutes have a lovely poem typed on vintage parchment paper to take home.

The week before the wedding, my mother and I made all of the place cards. She painted them deep green and copper, and then I handwrote everyone’s name and embossed them. It was my little way of personally recognizing everyone that attended. The groom’s father also made the arch that we got married under. Nothing we found fit the vibe we wanted, so he made the large triangle structure for us.

Andrea and Jerry’s destination wedding at Villa Eva showcased the very best of the Amalfi Coast and featured a glamorous, modern twist on traditional Italian style. Planning a wedding from another country is no easy feat, but the team at The Amalfi Experience made the experience effortless and pain-free, planning everything from the couple’s intimate ceremony in Duomo di Sant’Andrea to their surprise reception with a view of the iconic Italian coast. Francesco di Bianco infused a classic feel into the floral design with a soft palette of blooms and lots of greenery that also added a fresh burst of organic elegance. The true showstopper of this event was Andrea’s lace Tara Lauren, which she styled with crystal and gold accessories, and a long champagne-colored veil, to create her own version of Old Hollywood glam. We are hopelessly in love with every moment of this Italian wedding and the way Gianni Di Natale captured it all!

The Couple:

Andrea and Jerry

The Wedding:

Duomo di Sant’Andrea and Villa Eva, Ravello, Amalfi Coast, Italy

We made sure our wedding was within our budget but also reflected us as a couple. It could have been easy to listen to what everyone wanted us to do and to get distracted by all the wonderful ideas on Instagram and Pinterest. So, we made sure that every detail was either significant to us as a couple or something that we both genuinely liked. Our goal was to have an intimate wedding with our closest family and friends and to have it feel magical, whimsical, romantic, and fun! We didn’t want our wedding to be too serious.

We planned the entire wedding with The Amalfi Experience overseas. Everything was done through emails and by looking at pictures. (We had never been to the town of Amalfi or Ravello.) So, even though we had been planning the whole day for months, the final product was beyond what we could have dreamed!

My style inspiration was the Italian culture with traditional Catholic influence. I wanted a unique dress that had an interesting lace pattern, long sleeves, and a deep V-neck. I found Tara Lauren when my best friend was trying on dresses for her wedding day, and I instantly fell in love with her Harlow dress. So, when it was my turn to go dress shopping, I immediately went to Mary Me Bridal to try it on. There was no denying it was the one! I added length to the train of the dress to create a more dramatic effect when I walked down the aisle.

We kept the reception venue a surprise for our guests and seeing the look on their faces once we arrived in Ravello at Villa Eva was one of the most memorable parts of the day. We had The Neapolitan Quintet playing live, cheerful, upbeat music as the guests walked in. Once they walked in they were welcomed by a beautiful view of the Amalfi Coast. It was magical!

I’m a novice at calligraphy, but I decided early on that I wanted to do my own place cards for the dinner table. Everyone ended up keeping their name cards because they knew that I had personally handwritten each and every one of them!

One of the most memorable parts of the wedding was a surprise that we had for the guests. Our wedding planner, Lucy, is also a fantastic jazz singer! So, I asked her if she could please surprise everyone during dinner with a song or two. She sang “At Last” in her own rendition along with the band we hired…the collaboration was perfect! We had people running back from the bathroom when they heard live singing start and everyone was so surprised to see that the voice was coming from our very own wedding planner. It was definitely a highlight of the night.

This Mt Hood Elopement is Quintessentially PNW with a Waterfall and Campfire

August 24, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

A cozy wedding ceremony in the woods, portraits under a waterfall, and an intimate cabin reception made this Mt Hood elopement one for the ages. Texas sweethearts Hannah and Jake have always been drawn to the romantic, adventurous vibes of Oregon, so they treated 20 of their closest loved ones to a weekend of the best the PNW can offer. With just two Airbnb cabins, simple florals designed by Oak Grove Floral, a boho-chic Rue De Seine gown, and lots of DIY crafts and curated goods, the couple created the wedding day of their dreams, which Cassandra Michelle Photography captured in brilliant detail.

The Couple:

Hannah and Jake

The Wedding:

Tamanawas Falls Trail, Mt Hood, Oregon

We just really wanted to keep it intimate and relaxed, so we only invited about 20 of our closest family and friends. We actually live in Texas, but we have always loved our trips to Oregon and always knew we wanted to get married there. The most important thing for us was staying true to ourselves and creating a day that felt like ‘us’ – even when people disagreed with our choices. We also really wanted to use that weekend to reconnect with family and relax. It couldn’t have turned out better!

I honestly couldn’t justify paying a couple thousand dollars on a venue for a single day. We rented two Airbnb cabins right next to each other on the banks of the Sandy River for our friends and family to stay at and for the reception. We then got married for FREE in one of the most beautiful places we had ever seen!

There were so many amazing moments! The two that stick out most are probably reading our vows to each other and finally reaching the waterfall. Jake’s voice cracked during his vows and we couldn’t stop laughing, and I fumbled on my words once or twice, but that didn’t even matter. We had waited for this for over 8 years and it was so amazing to finally experience it together! By the time we got to the waterfall, we were just so happy to be married that we didn’t mind getting drenched in freezing mist!

We decided to take Polaroids of each other at the altar! We added them to a wood box I made, in addition to a special local wine we love, plus love letters to each other. On our first wedding anniversary, we plan to open the box and see the pictures for the first time, drink some wine, and read our letters. It was one of our favorite things about our wedding!

We made welcome bags for our guests and included in them were ramen noodle and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. I know it seems strange, but when we got engaged we were zip lining in Colorado and we hit a temporary financial bump two days after he proposed. We were basically flat broke in a different state, but we bought some ramen noodle, PBR, and rented a cheap hotel room for the night. We ended up having the most hilarious and memorable evening – probably our favorite one of the entire trip. It was such an important lesson for us and showed that life isn’t always perfect and things go wrong (especially when traveling), but that we could always make the best of any situation as long as we were together.

Our photographer Cassandra was so relaxed and genuinely excited for the adventure! She joined us for the rehearsal dinner and stayed in the cabin with our family and friends that weekend. The morning of, she was up early and joked with everyone while we got ready, snapping away and capturing so many little moments. I didn’t even notice her during the ceremony, which is a great thing! During bridal portraits, she would gently guide us into a few poses but captured so many great candid shots as well. She also coordinated with our absolutely phenomenal videographers, Jay & Mack Films, and they all worked together perfectly to capture our day. Cassandra was so down to earth and hiked over three miles with a smile on her face. One of the best decisions of our entire day.

Practically everything was DIY! For weeks, we collected brass candlesticks and dessert dishes from Goodwill and yard sales. I found a huge amount of white gauze fabric at a yard sale for only $1! With that, I cut and dip dyed every single napkin and the runner for the head table. It was such a huge money-saver and I loved the way they turned out! I also burned calligraphy onto wood slices for place cards and everyone got to keep them as a momento. My sister gathered fern leaves and laid them out on the head table, and the rest of it I kept simple!

Processional – “Heartbeats” by Jose Gonzalez
Recessional – “Wild Cub” by Thunder Clatter
First Dance – “Coming Home” by Leon Bridges

It’s so hard to choose a favorite photo of the day! Obviously, we love the photos in front of the waterfall and the super cute ones taken of us with our daughter, but Cassandra captured us sitting around the fire with friends at the end of the night and we just remember feeling so completely happy and exhausted. We are out of our wedding clothes and bundled under a blanket, and it was the perfect end to a perfect day.

There’s no sharper memory I’ll carry than the first sight of my soon-to-be-husband and all of our family and friends when I began my walk down the aisle.

Our ceremony was so much fun to plan. Our officiant is a lifelong family friend of ours and an LAFD Chaplain – so there was already a bit of a twist! He is known for being playful and Nate and I are known for our love of competition, so when it came time to decide who was going to read their vows first, Roger had us each throw a cornhole bag and the loser had to go first! I, of course, lost, because Nate is amazing at EVERYTHING. It was so much fun and really lightened up the moment and showed our personalities.

Our #1 goal throughout the planning process was for our wedding to represent US! We never take ourselves too seriously so we wanted it to feel bright, fun, colorful and casual.

Don’t overthink it! We put off a lot of decisions because we thought we needed more time to really plan it out, but in the end we ended up going with our gut anyways – and we couldn’t have been happier with the result!

We DIY’d nearly everything! We bought indigo died fabric at Joann’s and Hobby Lobby to cut and tie our dinner napkins, we broke terra cotta pots and stuck names on them with vinyl for the place cards, and countless family members and friends came together to help get it all done – nearly 300 of each! My sister Ashley is a craft WIZARD, and she created our invitation suite and program. Another fun DIY project was a small, circular card with a picture of a whistle on it – anyone with one of those at their place setting got to get my dad’s home-brewed moonshine from the bar! It was a huge hit.

Amy at Wild Story Floral is crazy creative and does it all with TWO baby girls running around. As an aspiring floral designer myself, I was completely in awe of her work and super inspired for my own. She was one of my best wedding decisions, hands down!

Our photographer, Nicole Kirshner, was absolutely outstanding start to finish. She was personal, professional, and beyond talented. Her photos blew us away and she truly became our friend along the way. Such a joy to work with!

The biggest surprise of the day came when the DJ announced the garter toss, and Nate walked on to the dance floor with a MICROPHONE!! He sang “Joy of My Life” by John Fogerty to me before removing and tossing my garter. This song is so special to us because the first time Nate came camping with my family, my dad made us all listen to it in the trailer and sang every word.
