This Scottish Brodie Castle Wedding is a Legit Fairy Tale Come to Life

March 20, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

It turns out fairy tales do come true, and we’ve got proof with Colleen and Patrick’s gorgeous Scotland wedding at Elgin Cathedral and Brodie Castle! The couple, who have deep roots in the UK, chose these iconic locations as nods to their history, which inherently made it the whole day feel magical. The fact that both the cathedral ruins and the castle are visually stunning was just an added bonus! Their planner Sarah, of Weddings by Sarah Jane, combined the couple’s love of moody colors and luxurious decor into an unbelievable design, and the traditional tartans and Scotch tasting Colleen and Patrick included only added to the overall regal feel. There were so many dreamy details to capture throughout this special day, and Emily Delamater Photography could not have been a more perfect choice to document it all!

The Couple:

Colleen and Patrick

The Wedding:

Elgin Cathedral and Brodie Castle, Moray, Scotland

Elgin Cathedral and the Highlands of Scotland hold a special, sacred place within our hearts. Both of our families have roots within Ireland and the UK — especially the Highlands of Scotland. Elgin Cathedral, in particular, is a constant within my husband’s family. Patrick has ancestors buried there and who were married there. It seemed only fitting, with the two of us so smitten with history, and have absolute respect for our ancestors, that we honored our roots by being married in such a special place. We chose Brodie Castle as our reception space because of the location and because we wanted everyone to be able to stay with us for the whole four days. We all stayed in the Lairds Apartments within the Castle. It was so fun to celebrate with everyone for much longer than just one day. What an experience!

I wore a beautiful ball gown from Anne Barge. It was important to me that I felt comfortable but also matched the venue. I mean, you get married in Cathedral ruins and have your reception at a Castle, you wear a ballgown right?! So I did! It has pockets, and I just adored it. My accessories were custom pieces by the amazingly talented Emma Katzka. My tiara was tasteful and so perfect. Patrick wore a custom kilt in his family’s tartan. His Best Man wore a custom kilt with his own family’s tartan. It was important to both of them to represent their families.

Our welcome boxes were some of my favorite touches. My planner, Sara Jane, went out of her way to put them together. She found these sweet little wooden boxes and decoupaged vintage Scottish maps on the inside. We filled the boxes with custom candles I had designed in the Outer Hebrides, a homemade tartan ornament, a bottle of champagne, a bottle of Scotch Whiskey, Scottish tablets, and a welcome card. They were such good keepsakes, and they made my heart so happy!

Desert Chic Joshua Tree Wedding at The Ruin Venue

March 19, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Lauren and Robert’s desert wedding at The Ruin Venue was boho minimalism at its absolute finest! With the help of Heartthrob Weddings and Events, they brought their at-home style into the desert with vintage furniture, organic textiles, neutral florals from Tropic of Flowers, and tons of greenery. In keeping with the boho-chic vibe, Lauren chose a dramatic Rue De Seine gown and delicate flower crown, and her girls donned neutral Show Me Your Mumu that complemented her look beautifully! Between the bride arriving at the ceremony in a vintage car, the golden hour portraits, and the plate smashing at the reception, there were so many unforgettable moments that Sarah Linda Photography captured brilliantly!

The Couple:

Lauren and Robert

The Wedding:

The Ruin Venue, Joshua Tree, California

When planning our wedding, the most important factor for us was finding a great venue that reflected who we are as a couple and giving our family and friends an experience they’d never had before.

The most memorable part of the day was seeing all our family and friends in one place together to celebrate our special day. We had guests from England, Canada, Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, and Australia, so being reunited with everybody was an unbelievable feeling.

We had always dreamed of a beach wedding but when it came time to planning, it just didn’t feel like “us”. We wanted something that was unique, had a stunning neutral backdrop and really spoke to the overall vibe that we were trying to achieve. After doing some additional research, Rob stumbled upon our venue and said: “I think I’ve found the perfect place”. We were living in Canada at the time, so during a work trip, he traveled to Yucca Valley to visit the site, and I trusted his instinct. We booked it on the spot. It wasn’t until we moved to California, that I had a chance to go up and view the venue. He was right; it was perfect!

Our wedding vibe was a reflection of our own style at home and everything we love. We’d almost describe it as “boho minimalism.” The backdrop gave us a beautiful neutral canvas that we then complimented with organic greens, vintage furniture, and Kilim patterns. We didn’t overdo it, as we wanted to backdrop to speak for itself.

Our wedding favors were Mexican Blankets. The desert gets cold at night, so we wanted something practical that guests could use during the night but also take home with them to remember the special event.

We cannot say enough about our beautiful photographer, Sarah! She is so talented. Rob and I are not natural in front of the camera, so were a little nervous that we’d look very posed and stiff. Sarah took us out for an engagement session to get us used to the camera but also to get to know her better as a person and her style of photography. That made all the difference! The day of the wedding, she came with her husband so they were able to photograph both parties and to capture every moment. She guided us through the whole process and made it so incredibly easy. We are beyond happy with the photographs and are also very glad we got to meet such a wonderful person. She fit into our wedding party so well, and it was meant to be!

From the event planner: Lauren and Robert wanted to combine their Greek heritage (so many plates to smash!) with their love of desert color palettes, white, and minimalism. Lauren is an interior designer and had some amazing ideas to work with the already gorgeous Joshua Tree landscape. Guests were treated to branded coconuts, and the bride came down the aisle in a vintage Speedster with her father!
