Some weddings take place near iconic landmarks, but Nina and Fredrik’s celebration happened directly beneath one. Their day under the Leaning Tower of Pisa blended travel, emotion, and a love story that started with one very determined mission.
They first met in Turku, Finland, where Fredrik coached a women’s volleyball team and Nina walked into practice. She instantly thought, “I have to have him.” What followed became known among her friends as Project Bear, a nearly year-long effort to ensure she and Fredrik always ended up in the same place. The night he finally stayed over, she messaged her closest friends: “The bear has fallen.”
Fredrik’s feelings unfolded more slowly. “I wasn’t looking for a relationship. I had rules about keeping my coaching separate from my private life,” he shared. “But love doesn’t care about your rules.” Ten years later, after new jobs, a move abroad, and countless trips together, they exchanged vows in a garden ceremony steps away from the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Personal Details That Shaped Their Wedding Style
Fashion was one of the most meaningful parts of the day. Nina’s gown was custom designed and sewn by her friend Katja, created to feel sculptural, minimal, and elegant. She finished the look with red lips and simple, yet meaningful, jewelry: her engagement ring, wedding band, and diamond studs given by her mother.

Fredrik worked with a local tailor in Stockholm to create a dark blue three-piece suit that fit perfectly and aligned with the overall aesthetic. Together, their looks felt timeless in every setting, from the hotel suites to the walk down the aisle to the twilight portraits among the trees.

Their takeaway for other couples: “Choose pieces that feel comfortable and true to you, and trust people whose work you believe in.”

Designing a Wedding Around the Venue’s Natural Beauty
The moment they stepped into Domus Comeliana, they knew it was the one. The private garden had tall cypress trees, open green spaces, and a clear view of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Instead of deciding on styling early, they waited until finding the venue and then let the space guide everything else.

Their color palette stayed simple and fresh: white florals and greenery that complemented the surroundings. When they walked in on the wedding day and saw the lighting, table styling, and floral installations come together, they were stunned. “We looked at each other thinking, is this really our wedding?”

They believe the flexibility made all the difference: “Don’t set every detail before choosing the venue. So much depends on the space itself.”

Candid Moments Leading Into the Ceremony
The morning was relaxed and intentional. After breakfast together, they separated into two suites to get ready with their friends. The photos show easy laughter, music, and a sense of anticipation.

Their ceremony was deeply personal. Their officiant Annika of Tuscan Pledges asked them thoughtful questions about each other beforehand and wove their answers into a heartfelt script. Fredrik’s niece and nephew served as the flower girl and ring bearer, adding a sweet family moment.

During the ceremony, the bells of the Tower of Pisa rang loudly enough that the couple and guests paused. Instead of interrupting the moment, it created one of the day’s most memorable and funny details.

Making Travel Simple for Out-of-Town Guests
Nina and Fredrik wanted a destination wedding that felt accessible and stress-free for their guests. Pisa’s walkability, beauty, and closeness to the airport made it an ideal choice. They browsed Instagram for ideas until discovering Anne, a Finnish planner living in Tuscany whose aesthetic instantly resonated with them.

“It’s all thanks to our wedding planner Anne. She is the sole reason we got the wedding we hoped for,” they shared. Her local experience with venues, florists, caterers, and musicians made planning from another country feel organized rather than overwhelming.

When asked what helped most in planning abroad, they said: “Hire a local wedding planner. Someone who knows the area and the vendors. Your life will be so much easier.”

A Garden Reception Filled With Food, Travel Memories, and Golden Light
Guests were welcomed with a cocktail hour featuring classic Italian guitar and mandolin music. Nina and Fredrik stepped away briefly for portraits before joining the group again.

Dinner became one of the highlights of the night. Tables were named after places tied to their travels, and Chef Francesco created a menu that guests adored. “Everyone was thrilled with the dinner,” they said. Each guest received a hand-painted wine stopper to take home, a nod to the couple’s shared love of wine.

As the sun set, the garden glowed with candlelight and string lights. The silhouette of the Tower of Pisa created a dramatic backdrop while friends and family gave speeches, shared stories, led games, and filled the dance floor. The atmosphere felt warm, relaxed, and celebratory.

Why the Photos Now Hold Even Deeper Meaning
Five days after the wedding, Nina’s father unexpectedly passed away. The photos from their celebration now carry a tenderness they never could have imagined. “He was there celebrating his daughter getting married. He was smiling, laughing, and happy in the photos,” they shared. Every image feels like a gift, a reminder of a joyful moment they were able to experience together.

In that light, the support they received throughout the planning process feels even more significant. With everything they’ve learned, they hope other couples will give themselves permission to let go a little. “Hire a planner with local knowledge, and stay flexible with the details. Trust the experts and let the venue speak for itself.” Their advice comes from a place of lived experience, shaped by both joy and the quiet weight of memory.
