Some love stories start with chance. For Oge and Ezeugo, it began with persistence. The summer before their senior year, they were both interning in San Francisco—Ezeugo’s least favorite city, and ironically, the place that introduced him to his favorite person. He spotted Oge’s photo in a mutual GroupMe chat, asked a friend for an introduction, and got a firm “Trust me, bro, you don’t want those problems.” Luckily, he disagreed. He worked his way into the same party, prepared like it was the NBA finals, and left that night knowing he’d met someone extraordinary.
From cross-country moves to three years of long-distance (Boston to Seattle), their relationship has been built on commitment and joy—equal parts romantic and full of humor. When it came time to plan their wedding, they wanted something simple yet elevated, modern yet fairy-tale-like. Their Secrets Akumal wedding in the Riviera Maya delivered just that: a luxe neutral color palette with lush greenery, a dreamy seaside arch, and a celebration that felt both effortless and unforgettable.

Choosing a Destination That Felt Like a Fairy Tale
Oge and Ezeugo knew a destination wedding was right for them. They wanted to show up, look great, and let the pros handle the details. With help from HotelMaven, they toured options virtually and instantly fell for the arch and Akumal Plaza at Secrets Akumal.
“The arch is actually what sold us on getting married there,” they shared. “We immediately imagined ourselves saying ‘I do’ under it.” The Akumal Plaza became their reception space, stunning even without extra décor, creating that fairy-tale feeling they were after.
JB Tip: If your venue has striking architecture, let it shine by keeping your decor cohesive and minimal. Thoughtful floral moments and clean lines can create just as much impact as elaborate setups.

Designing a Ceremony That’s Both Minimal and Luxurious
Oge and Ezeugo’s ceremony was a masterclass in minimal-yet-luxurious design. The arched pavilion at Secrets Akumal framed them in soft natural light, while mirrored stands topped with overflowing white florals lined the aisle. Ghost chairs kept the look airy, and a lush floral installation completed the altar, echoing the tropical greenery just beyond.
Known for their playful energy, the couple’s vows struck the perfect balance between heartfelt and lighthearted. “We laughed, we cried, and we reaffirmed that the life we’re building together is one of the greatest gifts we’ve ever received.” It was an atmosphere of intimacy and joy, made even more special by the love and laughter of their closest friends and family.

Giving the Planning Team Creative Freedom
While some couples create detailed design boards, Oge and Ezeugo took a lighter approach. “We literally sent the planning team a handful of screenshots from Pinterest and Instagram and let them run with it,” they said.
The result? A chic blend of creamy neutrals, lush greenery, and subtle gold accents. The overall effect was both modern and timeless, perfectly in sync with the tropical backdrop of their Secrets Akumal wedding.

Transforming the Night With Lighting and Atmosphere
When the sun went down, the celebration moved outdoors to a glowing courtyard strung with twinkling lights. A mirrored dance floor shimmered underfoot, while large illuminated “LOVE” letters and candlelit centerpieces added a romantic glow. The palette of gold chargers, crystal glassware, and deep green runners brought sophistication to the tablescape.
Guests stayed cool with the fans handed out earlier in the day—especially once the dance floor filled up. Oge and Ezeugo shared their first dance under a canopy of lights on a glowing, illuminated dance floor.

How to Stay True to Your Priorities on Your Wedding Day
“Trust your gut and pick your battles,” Oge and Ezeugo advised. “Be honest with yourselves about what really matters to you about your special day. For us, it was the venue and the music. Once we knew that, we focused our efforts there, and it made all the difference.” In the end, letting go of the rest meant they could be fully present, soaking in every moment instead of sweating the small stuff.
