Whimsical DIY Garden Wedding at Botanica Wichita

December 15, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Erica and Steve’s garden wedding at Botanica incorporated all of their favorite local vendors and a fun, eclectic mix of all of their favorite and most important things. Their traditional marriage ceremony was followed by and indoor-outdoor garden wedding reception, a reflection of their love for the outdoors and true to the local Wichita culture. The travel and nature enthusiasts, based their style on their personalities and ended up with an eclectic and occasionally conflicting wedding theme that was truly beautiful: garden and industrial, bohemian with a touch of minimalism, and traditional with a bit of whimsy. Valley Floral created an elegant and earthy feel with flower arrangements and hundred of feet of garland in a natural color palette of ivory and green, with gold details. Kay + Bee captured countless sweet and heartfelt moments, but we especially love how this fun couple donned wigs and party hats with their guests during their reception.

The Couple:

Erica and Steve

The Wedding:

Botanica, Wichita, Kansas

We went back and forth over and over again on whether to do a first look or not. Eventually, we decided that the majority of the day would be spent surrounded by wedding guests, so we wanted a couple of minutes dedicated entirely to just the two of us. And it was perfect. Those last few moments before walking down the aisle are some of the most surreal we’ve experienced, and we were so happy to have spent them together. We’ll remember the words we said to each other, the smiles, the laughs, andthe cries forever.

We are huge Wichita lovers and wanted our wedding to incorporate all of our local favorites and all the best parts about living here. We registered for gifts at our favorite local shop, The Workroom, held our reception at Botanica, The Wichita Gardens, had live music performed by an amazing local band, Jenny Wood and The Watchers, served craft beer from The Hopping Gnome and Wichita Brewing Co, catered in the most delicious meal from TWELVE, and had a dessert bar with tarts and macaroons from La Galette French Bakery.

We wanted our reception to be a reflection of our love for the outdoors. Botanica, The Wichita Gardens was perfect for that exact reason. We had our first dance under the trees, surrounded by blooms, family, and friends.

Processional – ‘Canon in D’ – Johann Pachelbel
Recessional – ‘La Rejouissance’ – Handel
First Dance – ‘Strangers’ by The Kinks

We are travel junkies, nature and outdoors enthusiasts, deeply connected to our spirituality, andlovers of all things Wichita. All we knew was that we wanted to stay true to each of those things. We didn’t have a style type in mind, and we didn’t feel the need to conform to one specific look. We just picked things we loved and things that were important to us and ended up with an eclectic mix of garden, but with touches of industrial. Boho, but with touches of minimalism. Whimsical, but with touches of tradition. And we couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out.

We brought a giant box of old costumes to the reception. Late in the evening, we secretly put on wigs and made an appearance on the dance floor with our new looks. Soon, the entire dance floor was filled with wigs, glasses, hats, and costumes. At the end of the night, guests were welcome to take a piece of a costume home with them as a keepsake.

This Couple DIYed Their Portland Wedding at Home From the Ground Up

No detail was too small for Kate and Bill’s Portland-style wedding at home, full of handcrafted details, locally sourced food, vintage décor, and tons of homegrown flowers. The couple’s cute craftsman house has been a part of their relationship since day one. They’ve worked on it together for years and after getting engaged decided to shake up the traditional marriage ceremony and tackle their biggest project yet: building their backyard wedding from the ground up. Everything possible was DIY’d and sourced from home. They grew the majority of their flowers in the garden, where they spent months before the wedding landscaping and renovating the yard, building the ceremony gazebo from scratch and refurbishing the garden shed into a well-stocked bar. We love how their home was transformed and bursting with life and even a bit of Portland rain couldn’t dampen the celebratory mood. The Foxes Photography captured this beautiful union coming together and all of the unexpected details, like the incredibly sweet motorcycle getaway amidst a shower of flower petals.

The Couple:

Katie and Bill

The Wedding:

Private Residence, Portland, Oregon

We wanted to shake up the traditional backyard wedding and make it something spectacular. We wanted to put fun in every corner, and ensure that it will be a party to remember. We wanted it to speak to who we are and show off what we are capable of. I’m pretty confident we nailed this.

We started planning our backyard wedding thinking we could save money and use what was left on our house. This did not happen. When you think about all the things a venue and traditional caterer would typically provide (forks, tables, toilets etc) the cost of rentals really starts to add up. We certainly invested in our house for the wedding, but it seriously busted our budget.

It was pure joy. Then, of course, walking down the aisle, friends and family all around and the love of my life waiting for me. Riding away on our motorcycle, amidst a shower of flower petals. When is started raining andI thought everything was ruined, and finally when I realized it was just a little rain and everything was going to be great.

Our house has played a big part in our lives since day one. I actually had to cancel our first date since it coinsided with the final signing and handing over of the keys. We have loved working on the house together and consistantly challanging our relationship with bigger and bigger projects. Why not make this the biggest one yet? We knew we were going to spend a lot of money on our wedding, andwe wanted to be sure we got something to keep in the end.

As a Portland wedding we had to represent with a food truck, which we did in spades with the Wood Fired Pizza Truck (Maiale Di Volo). Our family whipped up some great big salads and put together charcuture boards for an all out feast! We decided to abandon the typical tiered wedding cake in leau of 10 full cakes from a local bakery (Papa Hydens) This worked out to cost less and tast WAY better than any “wedding” option. Of course, Bill prefers cookies to any other desert so his mom put together a cookie spread to dream of.

We wanted the day to be fun, so every chance we got we added some fun to vibe. We knew we wanted a live band but neither of us were really that into the traditional pop music wedding bands. We did some research and went with swing band (Jenny Finn Orchestra) knowing that the dance steps are pretty simple and really fun!

Sweet DIY Kansas City Wedding at The Wedding Place

November 17, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Annie and Jacob’s classic Kansas City wedding was full of heartfelt emotional moments, spiritual devotion, and tons of family involvement. Their raw venue, The Wedding Place, allowed this sweet couple to customize their ceremony from beginning to end, featuring their closest family and friends. The bride was walked down the aisle by both her parents, the groom’s sister sang the processional and both of their parents prayed over the young couple. Simple DIY’d décor, including lace embroidery hoops, a stunning chandelier hanging from the tree branches, and a ribbon reception canopy, enhanced the outdoor venue beautifully. Bright and sunny florals designed by Bethany’s Bouquets, featuring pops of yellow ranunculus, tiny daisies, white roses and cool-toned greenery, from bridal bouquet to adorable flower crowns for the bridal party. Surveyor Creative and captured the most tender and pure moments of the overjoyed couple during a relaxed portrait session after the touching ceremony.

The Couple:

Annie and Jacob

The Wedding:

The Wedding Place, Kansas City, Missouri

We wanted to bless our guests and family. That was one of our main priorities through the whole process.

I made the lace embroidery hoops we hung. I got lace fabric and placed it in the embroidery hoop andcut the extra off. Very easy, and very beautiful for both outdoor and indoor venue.

Jacob and I personalized our ceremony by having the people we loved be a part of it, including Jesus. Annie‘s dad performed the ceremony. One of our best friends lead worship. Jacob‘s sister sang the processional song. Our parents prayed over us. Annie‘s parents both walked her down because she wanted to honor both of them. We wrote our own vows to one another.

We felt so much love from our closest and dearest friends, and we both felt so blessed and loved from the Lord. We had worship during the ceremony, our parents prayed over us, and we took communion together. This was so powerful for us as we were making such a beautiful, lifelong commitment to each other.

Our photographer was a joy to work with andhonestly made the day run more smooth. We felt so confident and relaxed around our photographers, and never felt that they were running the show. They simply captured the beautiful moments going on. The family photos were stress free and quick which was awesome. Our photographer even prayed over us, which meant a whole lot to us.

This DIY Georgia Wedding at Gascoigne Bluff was Catered by Waffle House

November 4, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Summer and Tanner wanted their large, southern wedding to be different and refused to stick to outdated traditions, which is why they chose to wed at Gascoigne Bluff, a stunning venue featuring ancient live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Waffle House catered their outdoor reception and was a huge highlight of the day: a decadent brunch buffet of cheesy eggs, grits and bacon, made-to-order waffle and hash brown station, and an espresso bar with baristas from the couple’s favorite coffee shop, Wake Up Coffee Co. This creative wedding featured plenty of elegant DIY details, like the dance floor made up of thrifted vintage rugs that are now spread around the couple’s house as a romantic wedding day reminder and the décor and bridal party greenery that was grown in the bride’s grandmother’s backyard. Yellow Bird Visuals and AHP Videos did an amazing job of capturing everything heartfelt and emotional about this wedding, from the couple being married by the bride’s father and grandfather, to their incredibly emotional first look while walking down the aisle.

The Couple:

Summer and Tanner

The Wedding:

Gascoigne Bluff, St. Simons Island, Georgia

I feel like every girl says this, but I really wanted our wedding to be different. Trying to plan a 300+ person wedding on an under $10,000 budget made it really easy to make our day different, mainly because I refused to pay $1,000 to rent a dance floor, $60 per person for the same old same old wedding food, etc.

My dad walking me down the aisle was a huge highlight, both of us couldn’t stop crying, and then seeing Tanner‘s reaction to seeing me was better than I could have ever dreamed or imagined.

My dad is also a pastor of a church in Brunswick Georgia, The Chapel, and so after he walked me down the aisle,he married me alongside my grandfather, a retired pastor.

Our dance floor was all vintage rugs I found at different thrift stores. And now they are all in our house, and reminds us of our wedding day. Also all of the greenery decor and bridal party floral was grown in my grandmas yard, and she arranged the bouquets. She was my MVP and hero.

We had Waffle House cater the reception and it was such a hit! We had a buffet line of cheesy eggs, grits, bacon and eggs. Then we had made to order waffle and hash browns stations and our favorite coffee shop from St. Simons set up an espresso bar with baristas serving cappuccinos, lattes, and cold brews. Tree House Macarons did the desserts, hundreds of macarons and a creme Brule macaron wedding cake.

Colorful DIY South African Wedding at Lunikhy Game Farm

October 13, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Robyn and Jeremy, a couple of adventurers who love the outdoors and nature fell in love with raw and vibrant Lunikhy Game Farm – the perfect venue for an outdoor ceremony full of natural beauty and a tranquil atmosphere. Floral design by Flower Child created the bride’s explosively bright bouquet and floral headband that inspired the color palette of the entire wedding. Navy blue, orange and copper with reds, yellows and greens echoed the rustic beauty of the South African landscape and every DIY’d detail created by the bridal party. Megan Ann Photography captured the couple exploring the bushveld by foot and safari jeep in a series of chill, fun and memorable post-wedding couple photos surrounded by wildlife and a breathtaking African sunset.

The Couple:

Robyn and Jeremy

The Wedding:

Lunikhy Game Farm, Bela-Bela, South Africa

Most important to us was that our wedding was a day filled with fun and special memories with our family and friends. We wanted our guests to have fun, feel relaxed and welcome. We wanted our wedding today to reflect us and our personalities.

It was the first venue we looked at, and following seeing other venues, we still loved Lunikhy best! We are both adventurers who love the outdoors and nature. Lunikhy captured us with its raw, natural beauty. We wanted an outdoor ceremony and really loved the enclosed boma area. It meant that those who didnt want to dance could relax outside under the stars and still be part of the atmosphere.

Basically our whole wedding was DIY. In hindsight…we may have taken a bit much on, but we really loved the process. We had great friends and family, that all pitched in and helped us out. Along the way, Robyn actually injured her hand, it was in a splint for 8 weeks and she couldnt do any of the diy. Her friends came round for a craft day and got a lot done. It was really an all hands on deck wedding!

We decided we wanted a colourful and bright wedding- we didnt want to use pastel colours (this just seemed a bit boring for us).  In the end we settled on navy blue, orange, and copper, with other colours weaving in – some yellows and greens. We brought in the colours in the flowers, bunting, hanging plants, and in the cushion covers for the plynths.

Megan managed to capture so many special moments…she was like a fly on the wall, we didnt even notice her around. Our criteria when looking for a photographer was someone who could capturebe the more natural and intimate moments, without having to keep “posing” and Megan did just that.

Rustic DIY Sodo Park Wedding in Seattle, WA

September 30, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Ngoc and Ron’s Sodo Park wedding in an urban loft in downtown Seattle blended rustic details with modern day elegance. The vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and reclaimed lighting combined with artistic DIY accents from the centerpieces to the floral designs created a romantic, natural feel with bohemian and rustic vibes that were beautifully captured by In Frames Photography. The groom, an artist and graphic designer, created the invitations and wedding favors, adding a fully customized touch to the entire day. We love how the bride’s stunning bohemian off-the-shoulder flutter sleeve wedding gown by Daughter of Simone carried beautifully from their casual park ceremony full of greenery to the rustic-industrial reception.

The Couple:

Ngoc and Ron

The Wedding:

Soho Park, Seattle, Washington

The most important thing for us while planning our wedding was to stay true to who we are, and not get carried away with all the extras that were not that important. We knew we wanted a beautiful laid back wedding, surrounded by our close friends and family, and thats what we focused on.

The most memorable part of our day was our wedding ceremony and first look. It was full of emotion, happy tears, and laughter. Our first look was definitely a favorite memory. Morgan was able to capture our raw emotion and reaction so perfectly. We could just look back at those photos any given time and remember exactly how we felt at that exact moment. It was nothing short of a dream.

My main advice to couples is to not stress too much and just enjoy the process. There will always be something that doesn’t go exactly as planned, but you’ve just got to remind yourself the real reason why you’re here. You are lucky enough to have found the one human you can’t live without and that is the most beautiful thing!

We wanted our wedding vibe to really reflect our style, who we are, and our love. We aren’t the glitz and glam type, so the overall theme we went for was romantic, natural, with a touch of boho and a rustic feel.

My talented husband is an artist and thankfully is great with graphic design as well, so he completely designed and made our wedding invitations. My mom did all the floral arrangements at the reception. Everything at our wedding ceremony and reception tables were made, designed, and put together by us and the help from our bridal party and family. We also made our own wedding favors for our guest. It was a lot of work, but we had fun doing it, and got to add our custom touch to it all.

Eclectic DIY North Carolina Wedding at Watershed Cabins Resort

August 5, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Emily and Evan’s wedding at Watershed Cabins Resort was as heartfelt as it was charming and eclectic! This creative couple and the groom’s handy father DIY-ed nearly every detail of the décor, from the signs to the table settings and even the lighting. They chose a rustic vibe to fit in with the mountain setting and added an eclectic twist by mixing simple wood accents with whimsical, free-form floral centerpieces created by Lady Luck Flower Farm. We love how this couple kept their reception menu fresh and relaxed by hiring a local pizza truck to cater the event. Anete Toming Photography captured every moment of this North Carolina wedding so beautifully, especially the couple’s romantic first look on a secluded bridge in the middle of the woods!

The Couple:

Emily and Evan

The Wedding:

Watershed Cabins Resort and Natahala Village, Bryson City, North Carolina

The most memorable part of the day for us was our first look! It was a relief to step away for a few moments to focus on each other. Our first look was set back on a bridge near a small waterfall. We read letters to each other and just enjoyed each other’s company. It was a moment that we will never forget.

We could not have asked for a better photographer! Anete and I met a couple of years ago while we were living in New York City for the summer (both with different reasons). The day we met, we hung out, grabbed some pizza, and went to a group hang out where people immediately thought we had been close friends for years. When, in reality, we only had known each other for a couple of hours! Since then we have stayed close and in contact. I knew her photography was my favorite, so when I got engaged it was a no brainer of who was going to be my photographer!

On the day of the wedding, Anete was more that just a photographer for me; she was my best friend who knew exactly what I needed at all times. Whether it was water or food — or just a hug and a laugh — Anete was more than I could have ever asked for! She guided Evan and I perfectly for the first look. She was sweet and calm, generous and humble. The photos that she got were phenomenal — it’s almost like she was two different people and in two different places at once! I myself have photographed weddings (mostly as a second shooter), so I was in awe of all the photos she got herself. She is an incredible human and an equally incredible photographer!

Our favorite photo would have to be the one of us jumping off of the picnic table in the air with the mountains in the background. It’s not just a photo; it is an image that explains Evan and I really well. We like to have fun and that was the moment that really captured the lightheartedness of the whole day.

We had the Amazing Pizza Co. pizza truck cater the wedding! They did 5 different varieties of pizza for the day: Italian Delight, Margherita, Cheese, Pepperoni, and BBQ Chicken. It was unorthodox and a ton of fun! The pizza was tasty and such a hit. Everyone loved it!

The cake was created by the coolest pastry chef ever, her name is Sarah Fagan, and we used to work in a kitchen together! She drove all the way from Charleston, SC to be there, and we could not have been more thankful! The flavors were coconut cake and a raspberry chocolate ganache.

DIY Vintage-Inspired Philly Wedding at Bartram’s Garden

July 8, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

When vintage shop owners Jennifer and Ronnie decided to plan their Philadelphia wedding at Bartram’s Garden, they knew two things: they wanted a vintage decor, and they wanted to DIY nearly every detail! Using their expertise from running Hoof & Antler, they created an exceptional vintage garden party on the outskirts of the city. Every inch of their wedding day was expertly styled, and no surface was left without lush and organic florals and greenery from Fresh Design Florist. To bring the garden party theme full circle, they set up vintage lounge seating areas (complete with a box of cigars) and yard games for the guests to enjoy. We love how the couple used so many natural elements to bring their dreamy garden wedding to life. We especially love that Tree of Life Films & Photography was there to capture it all in stunning detail!

The Couple:

Jennifer and Ronnie

The Wedding:

Bartram’s Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Living in the city, we wanted to stay true to our Philly roots while simultaneously being surrounded by the beauty of nature, which is not the easiest of tasks in a large city! Additionally, we run a vintage home decor and clothing business, so it was important for us to incorporate vintage vibes throughout the event. Our love of all things vintage is a huge part of who we are as a couple (we went thrifting as part of our first date!), so it was essential to incorporate these elements. When all was said and done, we located a beautiful botanical garden nestled on the outskirts of the city and created a “vintage garden party” look and feel!

SHOP THIS LOOK

We created or procured most of our wedding decor. We have a small vintage decor business, and I (the bride) am a graphic designer. We also had help from my father, who is a carpenter, for all of our power tool needs. Our list of DIY projects included: all the paper materials, which we printed and crafted at home; the table runners, table number stands, and cake stands; the ceremony archway; DIY photo booth background; and the giant JENGA game.

Luckily for us, we have lots of incredibly talented friends, so we decided to put their talents to good use throughout the day! Our wedding ceremony pianist and violinist, our officiant, and our DJ were all close friends of ours, which, coupled with our bridal parties, really added to the overall sense of family and celebration. Having all of our favorite people taking part in the event is something that we’ll never forget!

Being an artist, and an avid DIYer, I wanted to finely curate every detail of our wedding. For not just my own sanity, but that of my future husband, I quickly realized we could not do it alone. We needed a planner — someone to hold our hand along the way, and take care of all the day-of logistics. Hiring a day-of planner will allow you to relax, maximize time, and really enjoy your day. Plus, by opting to DIY everything possible, we were able to hire a planner at a budget friendly price. We cannot express enough how many headaches we saved by taking this approach.

DIY Irish Wedding at The Millhouse

June 24, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

Adelle and Stephen’s Irish wedding at The Millhouse was full of handmade details, timeless style, and touching moments. The couple pulled together all of their family and friends to help with nearly every element of this wedding, from playing music to baking cakes to decorating the venue. The result was an absolutely charming even that Darek Novak Photography captured with such attention to detail that we can feel the love that went into every moment. The bride’s elegant Laure de Sagazan wedding gown and pink bouquet created by Boutique Blooms were the perfect finishing touches to this lovely wedding!

The Couple:

Adelle and Stephen

The Wedding:

The Millhouse, Slane, County Meath, Ireland

I chose a dress by Parisian designer Laure de Sagazan as I was drawn to her relaxed, effortless style. She uses beautiful materials such as French Calais lace and silk crepe. I found a boutique in London called The Mews of Notting Hill that stocks only Parisian designers. As soon as I tried on a Laure de Sagazan dress, I knew there was no going back! The only difficulty was choosing just one dress from her collection as I loved them all. I had to return to The Mews several times before I decided on the Verlaine dress. It’s such a beautiful dress, and I had so many compliments about the dress on the day, so it was definitely the right decision!

Stephen is a graphic designer so he designed the invites, order of service, table plan, table names, menus… everything really! He created some illustrations of the two of us for the invites which I loved as it was so personal using his own work.

It was a real DIY event. We got all our family and friends on board and involved! Stephen‘s brother Warren, who was also the Best Man, is a musician and he played a song he’d written for the ceremony. Warren’s girlfriend Aine also played live traditional Irish music during the ceremony and drinks reception. Stephen designed and created everything from scratch. My mum and bridesmaids cut and arranged the table flowers. Stephen‘s cousin Alison did mine and the bridesmaid’s hair. We made our own favours — bags of coffee beans. Our friends and families baked cakes, and everyone was on hand to decorate the venue the day before. It was a real team effort, and we’re very thankful for everyone who was involved!

DIY Texas Hill Country Wedding at Memory Lane Event Center

June 8, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

In true Texas Hill Country fashion, Lauren and Chris’s wedding included bourbon shots, cowboy hats, and tons of eclectic details! The couple’s wedding at Memory Lane Event Center began with a super sweet first look, then was followed by a fun ceremony where they took unity bourbon shots under a gorgeous wooden arbor. Lauren and Chris’s reception was full of quirky, rustic details like a guitar case card box, an alternative guest book with retro postcards, and a simply gorgeous dessert table that the bride’s mom baked most of the treats for. We can’t get enough of the portraits that You Are My True captured of the couple in a grassy field after the ceremony!

The Couple:

Lauren and Chris

The Wedding:

Memory Lane Event Center, Dripping Springs, Texas

SHOP THIS LOOK:

A pretty common ceremony tradition is to pour sands together or light a candle in unity, but we chose to tailor that idea to fit us and do unity bourbon shots. Everyone seemed to love the uniqueness of it and it definitely helped to ease the nerves!

There was a sliver of time between taking pictures and going into the reception where we were able to just sit, have a drink and breathe together. It was a quiet moment and I think that’s where it finally sank in that we were actually married!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! When we started planning our wedding I literally thought I could do it all by myself, no problem. But that quickly faded and it really helped to have people you can trust in your corner. Plus, it’s just more fun that way!

Chris designed all of the signage for our reception along with our whole invitation suite. My mother and I also sourced all kinds of vintage glassware that she later turned into a million candles for the reception. On top of that she also made most of the cakes/treats on the dessert bar! The lady was a total rockstar.
