Once you’ve officially tied the knot and we can’t think of a better way to kick off your marriage than with an epic honeymoon. Whether you’re looking to stay close to home or take this celebration international, we’ve got you covered. From destination ideas to budgeting tips—here’s everything you need to know to plan your honeymoon.

Plan Your Honeymoon Budget

We can’t stress how important it is to start by creating a realistic budget that’s comfortable for both you and your significant other. This budget should include concrete prices like hotel costs and the cost of scheduled activities. It’s important to add your estimated prices as well—food, drinks, tips, on the whim entertainment. Having a round-about honeymoon budget will help keep you on track and leave little room for out-of-budget surprises.

Honeymoon Time-frames Dictate So Much

After crunching numbers, it’s time to decide on a time frame. Maybe you’re wanting to tie the knot and immediately jet off to the airport. Maybe you’re looking to postpone the honeymoon until you accrue more vacation time from work. Whatever your wedding and honeymoon timeline may be, being mindful of the season you’re honeymooning will help narrow down your destination options. Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring all offer different excursions in different areas of the world.

The length of your honeymoon will be specific to you and your partner. Taking into account your budget and time allotted away from work—sit down with your significant other and calculate how long your getaway will be.

Mini-moon Options

Keep in mind shorter honeymoons, or mini-moons, are a great option! Take advantage by planning a smaller trip to celebrate after your wedding day while saving and preparing for an over-the-top excursion down the line. There are no rules when it comes to planning the perfect honeymoon. All couples are different, meaning all honeymoons will look different too.

Plan Your Honeymoon Destinations Near Or Far

Now it’s time to get to the fun stuff—picking your destination. When hearing the word “honeymoon” your mind probably goes straight to far away, expensive, destinations. We’re here to remind you that you can have an unforgettable getaway, without actually getting away at all. Staycation honeymoons are becoming increasingly popular, and it’s the perfect honeymoon option for couples looking to stay close to home. Rent a cool Airbnb or finally book a room at that upscale local resort you’ve been dying to stay at.

For adventurous couples looking for a change of scenery but not sure where to start, you’ve come to the right place. From the warm beaches of Mexico to the cold mountains in Switzerland—check out the most romantic honeymoon destinations around the world to kickstart your planning.

Honeymoon Activities

With your budget set and a destination selected, it’s time to fill your itinerary. Whether you’re filling your timeline with hours relaxing by the pool, or packing your day full of tours and hikes—having a general or specific agreed-upon timeline will make sure you’re not missing any must-do activities you both love

We recommend you create a list of must-do attractions. Prioritize these in your itinerary, then fill the empty space with miscellaneous time-fillers that—if skipped—wouldn’t ruin your trip.

The wedding planning process can be stressful. After spending endless hours bringing to life your dream wedding, we believe every couple deserves to kick off their marriage with an unforgettable honeymoon. If you’re dipping your toes into the planning process, but not sure where to start—we’ve got you covered. Check out the ultimate honeymoon planning checklist, that can be used to kickstart your creativity. Then, it’s time to get to packing

These Country Music Lovers Combined Western Fashions and Southern Vintage Flair for Their Buxton Hall Wedding

July 15, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Calling all country-loving, fashion-forward couples: Meghan and Jimmy’s Buxton Hall wedding is everything you need to see today! The couple put their personalities on full display for their guests, showcasing the venue’s vintage design with minimal, retro decor and drawing inspiration from the geeral vibe of Asheville, their love of BBQ, and country music. When we first laid eyes on the bride’s chic Morgane Le Fay gown, which she topped with an embroidered white denim jacket from Rusty Cuts, we were in love. But then we saw that each of her bridesmaids also had a custom jacket to match the bride’s and the groom went full-on western with a custom nudie suit from Union Western Clothing, and our hearts exploded with happiness! This wedding is unlike anything we’ve seen, and Sarah Murray Photography was literally the perfect choice to capture it. If you think you’ve seen every type of southern wedding, think again!

The Couple:

Meghan and Jimmy

The Wedding:

Buxton Hall, Asheville, North Carolina

Jimmy is from North Carolina and has always loved Asheville. We’ve traveled there many times together and, after we got engaged in Chapel Hill, we went to Asheville the next day. It just felt like the perfect place for our wedding! Jimmy also has an affinity for cooking and barbecue, so we knew that was definitely the vibe we wanted. I actually reached out to Buxton Hall when we were still on our engagement trip because the space was so incredible. We’re so grateful that they let us use their incredible space and amazing menu!

Our dear friend Rhea — who is a shamanic priestess — was our officiant, and she did an incredible job. We didn’t know what she was going to say until we both got up there, and she highlighted our life together. She even surprised us with a quick film photo right before we said our vows to commemorate our very last moment as an unwed couple. We also said our own vows, which was special to us — though, in fairness, I started ugly happy crying before I could get the words out! So my months of writing the perfect vows actually just materialized into me repeating, “I love you!”

Our best advice for other couples who are planning their wedding is to be true to yourself and your aesthetic as a couple. There were moments where I just wanted everything to be white and modern, with pink carnations and baby’s breath, vellum menus, and a sheer molly Goddard dress. But then I remembered that I wasn’t planning my 30th birthday celebration; it’s needed to be about both of us! When planning your wedding, make sure to use both of your ideas, preferences, aesthetics, and tastes so the day feels like both of you.

As a jeans and a t-shirt girl, I wanted my wedding dress to be modern, clean, and simple. I really love the dress that Julia Roberts wore at the end of Runaway Bride, so thought a sheer element would be interesting. I just didn’t know where or how to find it! I came across Morgane Le Fay after tons of Google searches and popped into their shop on a whim after a marathon day of dress shopping. As soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one. It is still the prettiest thing I have ever worn, and I felt so amazing in it that day!

Jimmy was planning to wear a black tux, but it just didn’t feel like him. Because we both love of country music so much, he decided to wear a custom nudie suit a la Graham Nash and Flying Burrito Brothers. We finally landed on the sun from a bright Phoebus album cover (one of his favorite albums) as the inspiration, along with dogwood flowers to represent his home state of North Carolina.

The mustard leather chairs at Buxton Hall really sparked the inspiration for our color palette. Buxton has a lot of vintage elements, particularly with the dark wood floors and tables, so it felt like soft pinks and greens would be the perfect juxtaposition. We also made palo santo bundles with quotes from our favorite artists or songs for each place setting so that everyone could take the good vibes from our day with them!

Mid-Century Rustic British Columbia Wedding at The Barking Frog Lodge

July 14, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Despite wildfires that broke out in the area 3 weeks before the wedding day and heavy rains on the morning of, luck was on Victoria and Thomas’ side when it finally came time for their outdoor wedding at Barking Frog Lodge! The couple, who moved to Canada from England, had friends and family from all over the world join them for their special day. They used furniture from their own home to decorate the sprawling venue and stuck to a mid-century color palette that made the entire event feel more like a festival than just a wedding. The couple also sourced, purchased, and harvesting everything locally to really immerse their guests into the Canadian lifestyle they’ve fallen so deeply in love with. Of course, none of this would have been possible without their exceptionally talented planner, Ola, from Flockando who inspired them to focus on their unique vision, as well as the keen eye photographer Darby Magill who captured every single moment!

The Couple:

Victoria and Thomas

The Wedding:

Barking Frog Lodge, Pemberton, British Columbia, Canada

Five months before our wedding we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. This meant we had all of our furniture available for the wedding. Everything from our chairs, the dining table, garden furniture, shelves, pillows and plants to our cherished set of vintage walnut speakers, it all came with us and helped us create a uniquely Tom and Vic vibe. It also helped us save money on furniture rentals and made it super easy to pick a look and feel! We’re both people who love welcoming friends and family into our home, and our wedding was just a big extension of that.

Barking Frog Lodge is a working farm on the banks of the Lillooet River in Pemberton, BC. It’s flanked by the towering ridgeline of Mt. Currie on one side and the quaint farmland of Pemberton Meadows on the other. The lodge property sits in a large lush green garden filled with wildflowers, Fir and Hemlock trees, and backed by snow-capped mountains. Between the lodge and the bell tents, we had ample room to house both sides of the family, plus friends for four whole days of festivities.

We DIY-ed a number things including our arbour, all the signage, the table runners, and signature wedding beer. One of our best friends, Vince, is a fantastic home brewer who worked with us to brew a Pineapple IPA that we called Hoppily Ever After. Tom and I designed the labels and Vince, also being a talented journalist, wrote a small passage for the bottle. He brewed enough beer for 100 people and it was so tasty it was all gone by the end of dinner. Having sold our home to buy a sailboat we actually moved in with Vince for 3 months immediately after our wedding!

My style inspiration was actually myself, which might sound a bit strange. A few years before our wedding I sustained a serious brain injury that resulted in 3 years of post-concussion syndrome. During those 3 years, I had to stop biking, skiing, and snowboarding in case I hit my head again. I had memory problems, light, and sound sensitivity and I became a social recluse, hiding away from situations that would bring on symptoms. My social relationships suffered, my creative and athletic outputs were gone and I lost hold of who I was. In April 2018, after 6 months of intensive neurofeedback treatment (and 4 months before the wedding), I was given the all clear and told that I was 99.9% back to good health. The inspiration for my dress, hair, and make-up came from memories of myself before the injury.

I looked back at photos of myself and wrote down words describing how they made me feel. It was very important to me, on our wedding day, that I felt confident in myself for who I am and not just because of the fancy dress I was wearing. I also had to be able to dance! Tom and I love dancing, so my dress had to be comfortable enough to swing my hips in and cool enough that I wouldn’t melt into a puddle after dancing for 30 mins. After dinner, I swapped out my heel for a pair of converse and a gorgeous crown of green leaves made by my talented friend Stephanie.

Thankfully we had 5 sets of friends get married the summer before us, so we surveyed all of them for advice. And three things came out on top: food, booze, and music. We prioritized those things and tried not to sweat too much over everything else. Another diamond piece of advice came from our wedding planner Ola about being strict with your invite list if you have a set budget to stick to. She said “would you pick up the phone and invite them over for dinner? If the answer is no, then leave them off the list”.
