What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Think “Downton Abbey” meets Brooklyn. We chose a country-chic deco style set against the backdrop of the industrial landscape of the Brooklyn Red Hook neighborhood with touches of a romantic, elegant woodland forest.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Our ceremony is at the top of the list. I was so happy we spent the time to write our own vows. We also had our family and friends surround us outside the chuppah and read blessings and poems. It was a different take on the traditional, Jewish set of seven blessings and felt amazing to receive readings and prayers from our community.

Our dance party gets second place. We loved rocking out and letting loose after a wonderful and emotional day.

Another great moment is when the Mazinka, a traditional Jewish dance for parents who have married off their last child, (Dave is the third and last to be married in his family) turned into an amazing and wild series of dances by our guests for my in-laws and for us. Then my in-laws danced for us. It was unexpected and great.

The view of the Statue of Liberty reminded us of where our grandparents had first immigrated years before. It was subtle and in the background, but still beautiful.

We loved hosting our guests and our farewell brunch at The Regency Hotel where my parents had been married exactly 40 years earlier with a waiter that had actually served at my parents wedding! Then Chris Rock walked into our farewell brunch mistakenly. And it really made us feel like the wedding was off to an unexpectedly meaningful start when we realized that the Dalai Lama and his entourage were also staying at our hotel.

We also cannot believe our wedding was the weekend before Hurricane Sandy hit Red Hook. The Liberty Warehouse was damaged extensively just seven days later in the storm and the entire neighborhood was completely shut down for months afterwards. It has been rebuilt now, but we know we were so lucky.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? Figure out whats in your heart as a bride and as a couple. Plan from there and return there when making big-picture decisions. Also, figure out whats essential to your future spouse. Make sure these things happen. Lastly, as long as the people you love are around you that day, everything else feels secondary in hindsight.

Real Weddings- Jeff and Michelle

July 3, 2009 | editorial team

Photography by Roberto Valenzuela, wedding in Malibu California

Michelle and Jeff were married at one of our favorite places in the world, the magical Stone Manor in the hills of Malibu, California. With the help of talented wedding coordinator Cassandra Santor, wonderful photographer Roberto Valenzuela, and many other passionate wedding pros, they hosted a celebration that is a joy for us to share with you. Get ready!

Photography by Roberto Valenzuela, wedding at Stone Manor in Malibu California

Michelle was radiant in her Monique Lhuillier wedding dress, and the spectacular setting over looking the ocean created an atmosphere that can’t be beat. Chocolate brown and fuchsia details were chosen to look great alongside all the springtime colors in the gardens surrounding the house. Michelle and Jeff chose to use the color palette sparingly but beautifully in their invitations, flowers, table settings, wedding cake, and even in the wedding party’s chic fashion. I absolutely love the pretty as a picture wedding cake from Cake Crumbs, the slightly deconstructed floral arrangements from Dandelion Ranch, and the use of creative containers like rustic wine crates and vases rich with patina.

The wedding ceremony was nondenominational but included some special Jewish traditions as well. When Michelle arrived at the alter, she held Jeff’s hands and had a moment she’ll never forget. “I was so nervous but as I looked into his eyes my entire body relaxed and it was as if we were alone at that moment I knew I couldnt wait a moment longer to be his wife.” During their reception both Michelle and Jeff had special first dances with their mothers, and danced with each other to Rod Stewart’s Have I Told You Lately, a song they’ve been singing to each other since they first fell in love. Their goal was to make sure all their guests had an incredible time, and it looks like they accomplished that, and more. When we asked Michelle to describe her day in three words, she said it was, “amazing, stunning and perfect”, and we would bet that her friends and family would say exactly the same thing!

Succulents for Spring Weddings

April 6, 2009 | editorial team

After seeing numerous outdoor succulent gardens thriving on our last trip to Southern California and with my happy little potted succulents on the windowsill next to my desk practically swelling in the sunshine, I’m reminded of how wonderfully succulents go with spring wedding floral decor! So sculptural and compact, they make perfect little green favors for your guests to take home, and their dusty colors add interest, texture and dimension to spring floral centerpieces, bouquets and boutonnieres. Ask your florist about creative ways to incorporate them into your wedding decor, or choose a fun DIY project to bring their quirky personality to your wedding style.

Holiday and Wedding DIY Craft Projects

December 15, 2008 | editorial team

While researching craft projects on the internet for the Junebug Holiday Gift Guide, I was astounded and ridiculously excited by the amount of creative craftiness that people are up to! There are so many great resources, magazines and blogs dedicated to creating things by hand, and so many of the projects could easily translate into wedding ideas. Here are a few projects I came across that are geared toward the Holidays, but could easily be repurposed as wedding decor, wedding favors or gifts to your bridal party and family. So fun! I now have the overwhelming urge to hot glue gun something pretty.

Love this leather brooch from Living Creatively, an absolutely gorgeous, in-depth and inspirational online magazine about all things crafty.

Powder fresh pine cones from Ready Made- Instructions for Every Day Life, an excellent holiday decoration for home or wedding. Check out Ready Made’s fantastic project archives and find step by step DIY instructions on every kind of project, from cooking and sewing to building and lighting.

Embroidered Monograms from Ready Made. Make some darling Christmas tree ornaments or embroider them with your bridesmaid’s initials and give each of your girls their own little piece of personalized art.

Paper ornaments by Danielle Hamilton Photography, perfect for the holidays in festive red and white paper, but try using pinks, yellows or purples for spring time wedding decor extras. (Via Dollar Store Crafts, via Craftzine. Good ideas get around!)

A hanging paper snowstorm from Craft Stylish via Craftzine. Decorate your home windows this winter, or the wall behind your guest book table or cake table at your winter wedding. An inexpensive and super easy project!

Hand made felt coasters for Hanukkah from Purl Bee via Craft Gossip. Celebrate with them this holiday season, or embroider them with a monogram or wedding logo to give away as thoughtful gifts or to use in your wedding table settings.

Martha Stewart always has great gift ideas, and these edible treats (via Craft Gossip) would be welcomed by anyone as a holiday gift or a yummy wedding favor. The perfect packaging doesn’t hurt either! Thanks Martha!

Junebug’s Southern California Adventure

November 19, 2008 | editorial team

Junebug’s week in LA was jam-packed and so much fun, I hardly know where to begin to tell you about it! Luckily, being the photographers we are, we had cameras in hand every step of the way. We stayed in a beautiful house on Newport Beach and although we were running from appointment to appointment we did manage to catch a few stunning sunsets and we loved watching the surfers who were in the water from morning ’til night. (Yes, that’s us in the photo below, on our patio directly next to the boardwalk and the sand! Heaven!)

On one of my favorite afternoons we had some time to kill between meetings in Beverly Hills so we had a delicious lunch on the patio at Le Pain Quotidien, peeked inside the Helen Ficalora shop next door (I wear one of her gold “C” monogrammed pendants nearly every day) and then loaded up on cupcakes across the street at Sprinkles. Yum! Could it be any cuter in there?

(images above by Junebug, Le Pain Quotidien and Helen Ficalora)

We met up with our dear friend and super talented wedding consultant Stacy Kvam of SK Wedding and Event Design at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna, where we fell in love with the spectacular views and gorgeous floral arrangements. I can’t wait to go back and stay there, and to see a wedding take place in any of their multiple event spaces!

We drove south to scope out the Del Mar Racetrack where we’ll be shooting an upcoming Fashion Report and got unbelievably excited about all the visual possibilities.

And while we were down that direction we checked out some beautiful reception sites including the fun and beachy Powerhouse Park

…and the relaxing and luxurious L’Auberge Del Mar.

Throughout the week we were also lucky enough to spend some quality time with one of our new favorite people, Wedding Consultant Cassandra Santor. Cassandra is everything you would want in a coordinator and a friend: smart, savvy, sweet, creative and genuinely passionate about you and your wedding dreams. She’s worked for Martha Stewart and Mindy Weiss and is an absolute wealth of wedding knowledge. We were honored to finally meet her in person, and are now so grateful to call her our friend!

We’ve got lots more to share, so stay tuned all week for more of our LA adventures, including Lehr and Black Invitations, Robin Layton Photography, Wildflower Linens, Raj Tents and Owen’s Market by Mindy Weiss. Oh the inspiration!

Real Weddings- Lisa and Brent

October 24, 2008 | editorial team

Today’s Real Wedding of Lisa and Brent comes to us from the lovely ladies of One Thousand Words Photography. It was an intimate, personal and playful event that took place in the spectacularly rustic yet urban-chic venue, Sodo Park by Herban Feast

Lisa and Brent took time before their ceremony to see each other and take pictures, and the results are undeniable. Their photos are full of fun, and having that private time together early in the day eased their nerves, and allowed them much more time to mingle with guests during their cocktail hour.

real wedding images by one thousand words photography, blue, khaki and pink wedding color palette

Personal touches filled the day, like the flowers designed by Lisa’s mother, the rings designed by a family friend, the personal vows they read during their ceremony, and the airplane groom’s cake and seating cards that gave a nod to Brent’s passion for being a pilot. The staff at Sodo Park and Herban Feast Catering worked seamlessly to turn the room over from the ceremony to the family style dinner to the dance party reception while keeping the guests entertained with delicious, organic drinks and snacks.

Lisa and Brent used a muted color palette of pale blue and khaki with a touch of pink added in as an accent, and really took advantage of the unfinished look of the wood beams and concrete floors inside Sodo Park to complete their theme. This is such a gorgeous, natural look for any wedding, so if it’s your favorite too, here are a few more ideas for an laid-back, rustic, blue and khaki wedding…

Looking Forward- Planning a Vintage French Themed Wedding

October 1, 2008 | editorial team

Travel Update- Wednesday, October 1st- I’m heading home today my friends! I’m sure I’ll be excited to get back to tell you, and anyone who will listen, all about Africa, but also sad to say goodbye. Hopefully the long, long flights will go smoothly; full of movies, cocktails, reading, long naps, and reliving every minute of our great big adventure. See you soon!

Today’s guest blog post comes to us from a bride at the tail end of her wedding planning process. The unbelievably lovely Justine has met Kurt, her Mr. Right, and has planned a wedding that perfectly represents the things she loves. Grab a drink (preferably a glass of pink champagne) or a sweet treat (preferably a little French pastry) and read all about her stunning vintage French themed wedding plans.

(Photo of Justine and Kurt by La Vie Photography)

I am so excited to share my wedding plans with you! As I write, my wedding is less than two weeks away! Its hard to believe that its finally here. I was one of those girls who started reading wedding magazines and pulling pictures at age 12. My mom started collecting Martha Stewart Weddings as soon as the first copy hit the newsstand. While in my 20s, my mom and I pretended I was engaged so we could try on wedding dresses (more than once, I am ashamed to admit!). This inadvertently led to a job in the bridal industry, and at the age of 27 I moved to New York to work as a bridal consultant at the Vera Wang salon on Madison Avenue. I worked there for 4 years, and, yes, I have stories! Did you ever read about the girl who stepped on a pin and sued for $2 million? That was my customer.

I moved back home to Seattle 2 years ago, met my wonderful Kurt, and got engaged last Christmas, which was the happiest day of my life so far. And then I realized I had to actually plan a wedding! The first thing you need to know is that my mom had stopped collecting Martha Stewart Weddings, because the poor woman had given up hope. Fortunately, I had access to plenty from my years in bridal, so I made a color copy of every page I liked from every issue I had. Tear them out, you say? Don’t you know it’s a sacrilege to tear pages out of Martha? I made a binder and realized that I had so many ideas I loved, I didnt even know where to begin!
Vera Wang wedding dress via Brides.com
(Vera Wang dress via Brides.com)

The first thing I did was choose my dress. I will admit that I had my dress picked out way before he asked, and by that I mean, before I even met him! It is a gorgeous ivory Vera Wang chantilly lace sheath, with a low, ruffled neckline that skims the shoulders, sprinkled with clover-shaped sequins, and finished with a belt of ivory velvet covered in handmade champagne silk chiffon roses. My mom and I were thrilled to discover that it matched my grandmothers veil from her 1939 wedding perfectly!

With a vintage vibe going, I set out to find a wedding venue. Kurt and I both loved the idea of being married in a church, and when we saw St. Pauls Church in Port Gamble, we looked no further. It was built in 1867 along the designs of a church found in Maine, and has the most beautiful blue walls inside. I cant wait to walk down the aisle with my dad, then hear the church bells ring as I step outside with my new husband!
St. Pauls Church in Port Gamble, Washington
(Images of St. Paul’s Church via MyWedding.com and PortGambleWeddings.com)

Like all brides, I really wanted my wedding to be unique and reflect my personal style. I love everything vintage; beautiful fabrics, ruffles, ribbons, feathers, and flowers, and my favorite color is pink. My challenge was, how to do pink without having it look like Trista and Ryans wedding?

To set the tone, I sent out beautiful invitations from the Folios of M. Thomas, chosen with the assistance of Ann Stuhlberg of Stuhlbergs on Queen Anne. The invitations have an understated but very romantic watercolor ribbon theme, with lovely calligraphy. Everyone who received them commented on how pretty they were!

I chose Aria Style to decorate the church and adjoining tent. Lars, John, and Susan have been so wonderful to work with! I am thrilled that they will be with me on the day of the wedding. Together we took my love of Paris, Marie Antoinette, and all things feminine, and created a very romantic look for the day.

We are using gold chiavari chairs, soft peach taffeta linens with ribbon rosette embroidery, and pale pink draping to give the tent a gorgeous glow. Slightly undone arrangements of pink roses, ranunculus, and dahlias set in silver champagne coolers will sit on the tables, surrounded by mercury glass votives. The centerpiece of the tent will be the cake table, piled Marie Antoinette style with jewel-toned tartlets and a pink cake adorned with madeleines from Bakery Nouveau! The crowning jewel will be, well, a vintage-looking crown!

Pink champagne served in coupes (which, legend has it, were made in the shape of Marie Antoinettes breasts) will hopefully get everyone in the mood to pose in our photo booth! It will feature a wonderfully whimsical Parisian backdrop painted by our dear friend and artist, Judy Wise, of Canby, Oregon. Props for guests to play with include a Marie Antoinette wig, berets, feather boas and fans, and if I can find my French maid outfit..

Thomas.)

To further set the mood, Steve Rice, a wonderful accordionist, and his band will play French café music during dinner, then segue into New York piano bar standards for dancing.

I am so excited to have Kim and Adam Bamberg of La Vie Photography there to document the day. After photographing my sister Liesls wedding 6 weeks ago, they feel like family! I feel so fortunate that every vendor Ive chosen for my wedding is also someone I would love to have as a wedding guest and a friend.

Most of all, I hope that it will be a day for family and friends to enjoy. I think it is so easy to get wrapped up in the wedding and all the details, and forget that everyone is coming together to witness the beginning of a new chapter in your life. I just started working on my wedding vows yesterday, and thought to myself, Why am I doing this last? I am so happy to have finally met the right man. The rest is just the (pink) frosting on the cake.

Thanks Justine! We can’t wait to see your photos and hear about how it all went! Readers, stay tuned for her upcoming Real Wedding! Want a sneak peek at how it all turned out? Go to http://lifeofkimandadam.blogspot.com/.

Simple Wedding Cakes with Stunning Floral Accents

September 24, 2008 | editorial team

Travel Update- Wednesday, September 24th- Today we say goodbye to Victoria Falls and head back to Lusaka for a few days at my Dad’s house. I’m looking forward to really checking out the town, eating my dad’s favorite local foods (the popcorn from the street vendors and the deliciously fried “village chicken”) and logging some serious hammock time. My family is all about hammocks, and I love them for it.

Today’s blog post is from Blair, showing off some sublimely simple wedding cakes. I think I’m in love with the pink and red one in the top row. I’m such a big push over for pink and red together, this inspiration board is my desktop wallpaper!

simple wedding cakes with flower decorations

When it comes to wedding cakes, simple shapes with floral accents are all the rage. Whether the flowers are freshly picked, made of sugar, or painted right onto smooth icing, we’re seeing more and more delicious and beautiful cakes made to match a bride’s wedding flowers and the floral decor of her reception. Above are some of my favorite simple and elegant cakes. Each one has silky fondant icing with little or no piping and a creative floral accent to die for. I especially love the cake pictured in the middle of the top row with the huge red frosting camelia on top, and the one in the middle of the third row with red and pink peonies airbrushed on it. They’re classically beautiful but decidely modern at the same time. Faboo! Which cake is your favorite?

Creative Edible Wedding Favors

January 16, 2008 | editorial team

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love food. A lot. A whole lot. That’s why I was so excited when Junebug reader Jackie from New York wrote and asked me for ideas on edible wedding favors that go beyond traditional chocolates. Here are some of my thoughts on how to go fantastically foodie for your wedding favors. Yum!

Go local. If you have a lot of guests coming from out of town, or if you are particularly enamored with the area where your wedding is taking place, incorporating local produce or food specialties can be a super fun way to get your guests excited about your city. Working with local resources can also be a fabulous way to help “go green” with your wedding planning. In Seattle I might give out my favorite locally roasted coffee inside tins decorated with custom labels, pretty little espresso cups filled with chocolate covered espresso beans, or coffee flavored desserts like these homemade coffee truffles and rich espresso fudge brownies from Martha Stewart. I might also go for delicate bags of locally grown cherries or bottles of wine produced in Eastern Washington.

Espresso cups from Beau-Coup.com, truffles and brownies from Martha Stewart, custom polka-dot tins from Sophie’s Favors, and specialty teas from Beau-Coup.com.

Share your favorite things. Do you love, love, love malted milk balls, but your fiance prefers red licorice? Fill two little truffle boxes with a bit of each, tie them together with ribbon and add a tag with a description of why they’re your favorites. If you love sweet and he loves salty, have a snack buffet filled with candy, chocolates, pretzels, popcorn, etc. for people to scoop into little bags on their way out the door. If your family has a secret recipe that you have grown up loving, even if it’s unusual, give out little portions and explain where it comes from and why it’s so special. I’ve seen one bride give mini jars of her mom’s famous strawberry jam, and another give out jars of pickled veggies that she and her fiance made together.

Jam from FavorIdeas.com, white square goodie boxes from Martha Stewart Crafts, jars of fennel pickles from Brides.com/Miki Duisterhof Photography, and sweet and salty candy buffet from TheKnot.com/RedRibbon Studios.

Give them food to go. Every time I’ve received a party or wedding favor that is meant to be eaten later that night, or the next morning for breakfast, it has always seemed so thoughtful and I’ve always been grateful to have it. Give your guests a little bag filled with delicious granola, scones or pastries from your favorite bakery along with some fancy tea for a breakfast favor. If you think your wedding is going to go well into the wee hours, prepare a midnight snack favor- try a little box with Krispy Kreme (or other local) donuts or your favorite late night snack food to revive their energy after hours on the dance floor.

Doughnut favors in bags from TheKnot.com/New Image Photography, doughnut favors in a box, jam and scone favors and homemade granola favors from MarthaStewart.com.

What are your favorite foodie favors? Share your great ideas, we want to know what you love!
