This Maitland Art Center wedding had vintage details, modern vibes, and personal touches all over! Julie and Thomas knew they wanted to have a spiritual wedding that included all of their family and friends in as many ways as possible, so they recruited their guests to make their desserts and artwork for the venue. Julie rocked an amazing vintage bridal style with her lace Tadashi Shoji gown, handmade gold birdcage veil, and fuzzy stole. We love how Jessica Perez Photography captured this couple’s radiant love for each other as well as some very smooth dance moves!
Don’t view things as hiccups but creative challenges. We collaborated on everything together and figured out how to make things work. So when our venue said no to flower petals, the “balloon squad” was created. And, quite frankly, that is so much cooler then flower petals!
Thomas: For me, the most memorable moment was the anticipation waiting for Julie to come down the aisle.
Once we buckled down to plan our wedding, we did a “visioning” session to pinpoint what was most important to us. Three things really stood out. 1) That our commitment was bigger than just the two of us. It was between Thomas, me, and God. 2) Family! We have wonderful loud, loving and fun families. And this day was about the two families coming together. 3) Celebration! When you see the reception you will understand…oh, and the budget! So I guess, it was four things.
Julie: The most memorable moment for me was after we were married, and we ran out of the garden. I remember thinking–we did it! It was beautifully surreal…like we were floating.
There is one word for our photographer Jessica–LOVELY. Jessica shared our day with us. She has a beautiful aesthetic, relishes in details and has a calming spirit. So working with her is like having one of your dearest friends with you who also happens to be an amazing photographer.
Thomas‘ grandmother baked the most delicious Russian Teacakes. Julie‘s dad baked her favorite middle eastern date cookies. Thomas‘ uncle made his famous ice tea! He also led an incredible communal art project (so all of our guests had a hand in creating a unique piece of art). Our dear friends helped so much!
We didn’t have a theme or colors. We focused on how we wanted our friends and family to feel; their experience from the time they arrived to the time they left. So the vibe had to be cool, creative, and fun. It just fit.
Everything about Katie and Brendan’s Colony Palms Hotel wedding is the epitome of Palm Springs chic! The bride is a stylist by trade, so her wedding day fashion was downright amazing: a long-sleeved Houghton gown, 3.1 Phillip Lim block heels, and a custom Scout Folks leather jacket are just a few of Katie’s selections that we can’t stop fawning over. Between the bride’s moody makeup, DIY infused honey favors, and photographer Lauren Scotti’s breathtaking images, every inch of this wedding was meticulously curated for its sleek, modern style and romantic Palm Springs vibes!
Naturally, fashion is in me so this was the part I was really excited for. Going into it I thought I knew exactly what I wanted and I was wrong! Well sort of… I knew hands down I wanted long sleeves. There’s something so unique about a long sleeve wedding dress and I knew I didn’t want to veer away from that.
I’m a shoe girl! I knew I wanted something fashion forward, funky and I thought a touch a burgundy would be fun to pull it all together but I didn’t have a huge budget for them. After a LONG hard search, I came across these stunning 3.1 Phillip Lim burgundy pointed toe with a white heel. It was love at first sight! They were clean cut and fashion forward and I knew they are a match made in heaven with my dress.
I initially wanted more of a boho feel but everyone and their mother was going for that look and it made me want to run in the opposite direction. I came across this amazingly elegant yet simple Houghton gown and was OBSESSED!! I tried on some more dresses just to be sure but when I couldn’t get this one out of my head, I knew it was meant to be and it was a done deal!
As for my girls…burgundy obviously was the color choice but I didn’t want your “typical” bridesmaids dress and I also didn’t want them wearing the same one. I dressed each girl by their body type. Every time I came across a burgundy dress I loved and thought was appropriate, I bought it and had one of the girls try it on. We had so much fun in the process and they all looked STUNNING.
My hubby and I both knew we wanted a mini destination wedding and Palm Springs holds a special place in our heart, as we always escape out there. We live in Orange County so it was just close enough for our family and friends to make it but far enough to get that weekend getaway.
My favorite moment of the ceremony was hearing my husbands vows to me. They were so heartfelt and perfect. He’s not much of a talker, unlike me, so for him to stand there in front of all our loved ones and spill his heart out was so emotional and raw. I still get the chills just thinking about it.
We planted a lemon tree during the ceremony. We wanted to do something to represent our marriage and the fact that it grows and matures over time.
I am such a perfectionist and every detail mattered to me. I got caught up in wanting everything to be perfect. Yes, you want it to be of a certain aesthetic but at the end of the day, your guests just want to eat, drink & dance their hearts out. When it came down to it I really wanted to make sure I included my husband and let him know this was about him too. I wanted his input and wanted to make sure he got the little things he wanted.
The most memorable part for me was when my husband and I went with just the photographer to the wind mills to take our romantic photos. We had just said I do and the two of us were out in the middle of no where with the wind blowing like crazy and it felt so obliterating and peaceful. It was a surreal moment that I’ll never forget.
We wanted to create a vacation feeling where our guests could relax and soak it all in for a couple of days. We spent some time going to places that weren’t usually in our hotspot routine. We came across Colony Palms Hotel and immediately fell in love! It is kind of hidden and has this very intimate feeling; which is exactly what we wanted. It gives you that Palm Springs vibe we love but a splash of old Hollywood. Plus we got the whole place to ourselves & our guests, stopped looking and booked it right away!
I knew right off the bat I wanted all long continuous tables and I LOVE the look of long garland. We again wanted to keep with the clean look and wanted to greens to be the statement. I think the copper accents were the perfect touch to break things up and put in a little jazz without it being too much.
The copper accents stemmed from something else that is personal to us. Moscow mules are mine & my husband’s favorite cocktail so of course we had to have them! The copper mugs are so fun & they inspired us to have copper details throughout.
For our favors, we infused our own honey! We made lavender, lemon, and thyme. They turned out super yummy.
Our advice: Be you. Everyone is going to give you their opinions whether you want to hear it or not. Stick to your gut. There are so many people involved and everyone has a thought and a feeling about EVERYTHING. Remember that this is about you and your soon to be spouse, be authentic to the two of you. Embrace this magical time & take in all the little things. You can tend to get caught up in all the stress and chaos and forget to be in the moment. On the day of wedding steal your new spouse away from everyone and have a minute with just the two of you. Look out at everyone and take a breath. It all happens so fast, you want to take it all in.
Of all the wedding fashion trends for 2016, we have to say that vintage bridal style is at the top of our list. A special kind of bride is attracted to the romantic quality and sense of nostalgia associated with vintage styling. We’re endlessly impressed with the sartorial choices of Junebug brides, who always manage to get the vintage wedding look just right. With the help of some of our favorites, we present how to nail your vintage bridal style!
The Dress
The first, most fun, and possibly most difficult step of achieving your vintage bridal style is selecting a gown to set the tone of your ensemble. Every addition to your look will be defined by the details, silhouette, and style of your wedding gown, so choose wisely!
Glamorous Beading
For an Old Hollywood or Great Gatsby-inspired look, choose a gown with intricate beading. Bridal designers like Anna Campbell and Jenny Packham are known for crafting gowns with exquisite beaded designs that wow.
Popularized by Kate Middleton’s 2011 Alexander McQueen wedding gown, lace long sleeves provide a sense of vintage modesty and demure romance. While top designers like Temperley London are synonymous with the trend, wedding dresses with long lace sleeves can be found in nearly any bridal collection for a variety of price points.
Is there a more romantic silhouette than the off-the-shoulder dress? The balance of baring your shoulders while covering a hint of skin is reminiscent of an old school bride’s subtle defiance of modesty. Delicate fabrics like tulle, lace, and satin hung gently across the top of your arms makes for an etheral vintage look.
A gown is just the beginning when it comes to crafting your bridal look. Brides with unforgettable style carefully curate an outfit that complements their wedding design from head to toe. Accessories, though small, can have a big impact on your overall vintage affect.
Shoes
Whether your pair is actually-vintage or retro-inspired, the peep of shoes beneath your dress can make a major statement in your bridal style. Luckily, vintage styles can be found nearly everywhere right now, from bridal-specific shops like BHLDN to your everyday favorite spots like ASOS.
One of the quickest ways to add a touch of vintage to your bridal style is with a veil or hairpiece. From crystal hair combs to birdcage veils, the options are endless! We recommend a sparkly statement for a Roaring Twenties inspired wedding ensemble, a fascinator hat for a retro ’40s inspired affair, and a short and sweet veil clipped into your curls for a celebration reminiscent of the 1960s.
In addition to what’s on your head, the accessories you have and hold on your wedding day can contribute to the vintage affect of your bridal look. This is a great opportunity to employ your “something old” with a true-vintage pair of gloves or antique clutch. However, your “something new” could also be a vintage-inspired hat or Art Deco earrings!
Now that your gown and accessories are in order, it’s time to style the true star of your bridal look: yourself! Put your best face forward by choosing hair and makeup styles that are consistent with the rest of your ensemble.
Winged Eyeliner
Vintage makeup can be characterized by a few words: classic, playful, romantic, and mysterious. There’s no makeup trend that encompasses these sentiments more than winged eyeliner. Bold or dainty, a flick of eyeliner extending past the lid is always dynamic.
It’s no secret that a bold red lip is synonymous with vintage makeup, but did you know that any bride can rock this look? No matter the decade your wedding is influenced by or the color of your skin, a red lip is classic, flattering, and unbelievably romantic.
With so many variations, we couldn’t choose just one vintage-inspired bridal hairstyle to share. What these ‘dos have in common are soft, voluminous curls, whether pinned high or low, or worn to one side of cascading across your shoulders.
