Long before Yulia met Dean, she had fallen in love with Tulum—the jungle, the ocean, Mexican culture, and especially its music scene. By the time Dean proposed, Yulia had already spent years picturing herself getting married in Tulum. That felt fitting for a couple whose story began because of music in the first place.

Believe it or not, Yulia and Dean met at a nightclub in Philadelphia while seeing one of their favorite DJs perform. Yulia was dancing by herself when a stranger shoved her and told her not to stand so close to him. Dean saw the entire thing happen.

“He immediately came over, gave me the biggest bear hug, and told me not to pay attention to that guy because he was completely in the wrong. Then, in true gentleman fashion, he actually went up to him and made him apologize to me.” What started as an act of kindness quickly turned into something bigger.

“Looking back now, it feels like something straight out of a movie: two people finding each other in the middle of chaos, connected by music, timing, and one unforgettable moment of kindness.” Years later, they brought all of those pieces together for a jungle wedding in Tulum that borrowed a little from a glamorous dinner party, a little from Cirque du Soleil, and a lot from their love of music.

Why Tulum Was Always The Destination

For Yulia, getting married in Tulum was years in the making. “Ever since I first visited Tulum six years ago, I dreamed of getting married there.” The destination represented everything they loved as a couple: beautiful scenery, incredible music, vibrant culture, and a sense of adventure. They also knew they wanted a January wedding since it’s one of the best times to visit Mexico, and Tulum hosts one of the biggest music festivals in the world at the beginning of the year. 

When Yulia started searching for venues after their May 2025 engagement, she came across Kima Tulum on Instagram. The search basically ended there. Nestled deep in the jungle, it was intimate, striking, and unlike any venue they had seen before. But what truly stood out was how personal everything felt. The venue is family-operated, and Yulia connected directly with owner Dorothee Ftaiti from the beginning. “It never felt transactional or corporate.”

Learning that Kima only hosts around 30 to 40 weddings each year made it feel even more special. Instead of a large-scale operation, it felt warm, thoughtful, and genuine, which happened to be exactly how they wanted their wedding to feel too.

 

The Ceremony That Confirmed They Really Do “Share One Brain”

One of Yulia and Dean’s biggest inside jokes is that they “share one brain.” They’re constantly saying the same thing at the same time, finishing each other’s sentences, and texting each other simultaneously. That connection became impossible to ignore during their vows. Dean opened his with: “My sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet Yulia.” Meanwhile, Yulia ended hers with: “Your sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet Yulia.” Neither of them knew the other had written something so similar. “Hearing that in real time completely broke both of us.”

Family made the moment even more emotional. As a Russian immigrant who has spent the last 19 years living in the United States on her own, having her parents and brother travel from Russia to Mexico meant everything. Her mom walked their pug, Giuseppe, down the aisle as ring bearer, while her dad walked her to the ceremony.

Finding People Who Could Bring Big Ideas To Life

Yulia was heavily involved in putting together her vendor team. A self-proclaimed planner, she personally sourced many of her vendors herself, including the venue, videographer, and content creator. She also brought her friend Sofia, who not only did her hair and makeup but organically became a second photographer throughout the day.

Wedding planner Angelina Cardenas quickly became one of the most important people throughout the process. Then came wedding designer Maria Limon, who helped transform Yulia’s endless references and ideas into something tangible. “I came into the process with so many details, references, and creative visions, and Maria somehow managed to take everything I imagined and elevate it even further.”

Photography was another major priority. When Yulia found Junebug vendor Memory Box Photography, she instantly connected with their style. “They captured moments in such an authentic and editorial way, which perfectly matched the atmosphere and aesthetic we envisioned for the wedding.” More importantly, everyone they hired brought a sense of calm to such a big day. With a wedding this ambitious, that mattered just as much as talent.

When Art Nouveau Met The Jungle

Originally, Yulia envisioned something timeless and elegant. Since the venue was already surrounded by lush greenery, she chose a green color palette paired with crisp white accents. Then something unexpected happened. The aesthetic started taking on a life of its own. “As all the design pieces slowly started coming together, I realized we were naturally leaning into an Art Nouveau meets Gatsby-inspired aesthetic.”

Once she embraced it, everything clicked. The wedding became this beautiful mix of old-world glamour, romance, mystery, and celebration. The jungle did a lot of the heavy lifting, so there was no need to overcomplicate things. Candlelight, greenery, and classic details worked together without taking attention away from the setting. 

 

How They Turned Their Reception Into A Live Show

The reception was probably the clearest reflection of who they are as a couple. “Our biggest goal for the reception was for it to feel nothing like a traditional wedding.” Yulia wanted guests to participate rather than simply observe. So throughout the evening, guests encountered:

  • Magicians
  • A tarot card reader

The overall feeling was exactly what she envisioned. “Cirque du Soleil meets Tulum jungle.” There was always something happening no matter where you looked. Then Yulia unveiled one final surprise. She secretly planned a burlesque-inspired performance for Dean that absolutely nobody knew about. It quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the evening.

Their Biggest Advice? Stop Thinking About What A Wedding Is Supposed To Look Like

At the end of it all, Yulia’s advice is simple. “Do what truly makes you happy and create the wedding that feels authentic to you as a couple.” It’s easy to get caught up in traditions and expectations, but people tend to remember the weddings that have personality. The ones where they leave knowing exactly who the couple is.

And that’s probably the best way to describe Yulia and Dean’s jungle wedding in Tulum. It wasn’t trying to fit into a category. It was two music lovers creating the biggest, most joyful version of themselves and inviting everyone they loved to come along for the ride.

Southern Charm Meets Industrial Cool at This Downtown Savannah Wedding

When Christina and Tom first crossed paths in high school, they were simply acquaintances growing up in a small town in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. It wasn’t until nearly a decade later, when they both happened to be back home and joined a friend for drinks, that they finally got to know each other. “We talked to each other all night long, we hit it off right away,” Christina shared. Not long after, they both moved to Charleston and, in her words, “have been inseparable ever since.”

For their wedding, they blended historic Southern charm with industrial cool, celebrating across two distinct venues that perfectly matched the atmosphere they envisioned. Their downtown Savannah wedding featured purple florals, candlelight, thoughtful DIY details, and, most importantly, plenty of opportunities to actually spend time with the people they love.

Rather than filling the day with an endless schedule of events, Christina and Tom made intentional choices that allowed them to slow down, be present, and enjoy the celebration alongside their guests.

Turning a Pinterest Rabbit Hole Into a Clear Vision

Christina’s planning journey started in a familiar place: Pinterest. Lots and lots of Pinterest. “I started my planning process like most brides out there, searching Pinterest endlessly for ideas.” Like many people, she eventually found herself with far too many saved images and ideas pulling her in different directions. Thankfully, she had given herself plenty of time to figure things out.

“I started thinking about these things over a year out, so when it came time that I needed to make a decision I told myself I just need to go with what first called out to me.” Eventually, her vision became clear.

She wanted something moody but still fitting for the season and Savannah itself. Purple, her favorite color, became a central part of the floral design, while candles brought in the romantic atmosphere she had always envisioned. Although she worked with a month-of coordinator who helped recommend vendors, Christina handled much of the design process herself.

Spending More on What They’ll Keep Forever

Very early on, Christina purchased a spreadsheet template to help organize their budget. “We both agreed the venue and photos were the most important to us.” That decision made everything else much easier.

Instead of choosing blank-slate venues that required extensive decorating, they intentionally picked spaces that already had plenty of character. That freed up more room in the budget for photography. “The photos we will have forever, so I did lots of research to find the right photographer for us,” Christina said. That search eventually led them to Junebug vendor TLC Wedding Photography.

Their approach is also a nice reminder that couples don’t have to invest equally in every category. Having a few non-negotiables from the start can make budgeting decisions much easier later on.

Choosing Connection Over Rituals and Traditions

Some of Christina’s favorite memories happened during the quieter parts of the day. The couple shared a first look before the ceremony, then sat together privately to read their vows. “It was so sweet. I could tell Tom was nervous, but once we sat down and read our vows privately we both felt so at ease.”

The ceremony felt quick, but there were little moments that stayed with her. “I did enjoy being together in the house before we walked out. At this point I got so nervous but Tom being there made me feel so much better.” The violinist also added something special to the atmosphere. “It was so beautiful hearing him play as we waited.” Later, one of her favorite memories became the walk between venues and seeing all their guests welcome them into the reception space together.

Creating Two Bridal Looks Without Buying Two Dresses

Christina knew exactly what she wanted from her wedding dress. “I knew I wanted a detachable skirt for my dress. I loved the idea of easily taking the skirt off and having a new look underneath.” It gave her two different looks without needing an entirely separate outfit.

Tom complemented the overall mood with a classic black suit. “We looked at other colors but that just felt like the best way to go.”

The wedding party remained intentionally small. Christina’s sister served as her maid of honor and, after trying on numerous options, ultimately landed on a black dress that felt most comfortable for her. Tom’s father stepped into the role of best man and matched Tom’s black suit.

For makeup and hair, Christina wanted everyone to feel like themselves. “For myself I wanted something I would normally do but slightly elevated, and for hair I knew I wanted soft curls, which felt more like myself.”

Leaning Into Two Very Different Savannah Venues

Christina and Tom didn’t try to find one venue that could do everything. Instead, they embraced two spaces that each brought something unique to the day. Their ceremony took place at Harper Fowlkes House, a beautiful historic home in Savannah with a courtyard fountain that needed very little additional décor. The reception moved to Soho South, a former restaurant turned event space that immediately caught Christina’s attention because of its large windows, natural light, and vintage speakeasy-inspired bar.

The contrast between the two locations ended up becoming one of the most memorable parts of their downtown Savannah wedding. They also kept the reception layout simple. With an open floor plan and a dance floor placed at the center of the room, guests could easily move around and mingle throughout the evening.

The couple also opted for a sweetheart table, which ended up being one of Christina’s favorite decisions. “It was so nice to spend those first moments as husband and wife together, and to be able to eat all the yummy food,” she shared. Guests naturally passed by their table while grabbing food from the stations, creating easy opportunities to chat without having to carve out extra time later.

Building Extra Time With Guests Into the Weekend

One thing Christina is especially happy they included was a welcome celebration before the wedding day. Hosted at her in-laws’ house, guests enjoyed drinks and small bites in a much more relaxed environment. “We did a welcome celebration, and I’m so glad we did. It was an opportunity for us to really chat with our guests in a relaxed environment before we were in the whirlwind of our wedding day.”

That intention showed up throughout the wedding itself too. Instead of disappearing for a lengthy portrait session after the ceremony, they purposely kept photos brief so they could join everyone during cocktail hour. Looking back, Christina says she’d even add one more event.

“If I could change something, I would have done a brunch the next day for guests who wanted to join and say goodbye. It feels like it goes by so fast and you don’t get to really talk to all of your guests.” She also says she would have felt that even more if they hadn’t hosted the welcome party. “So if the budget allows, have the exit brunch!”

Asking for Help Made the DIY Details Possible

A surprising amount of the wedding was DIY. Christina purchased almost all of the reception decor herself, including the candles, candle holders, bud vases, and flowers. After researching wholesalers and learning more about florals, she selected some of her favorite blooms and paired them with complementary varieties. Thankfully, she didn’t try to do everything alone.

“I was so fortunate to have my friends come over the morning of the wedding and help arrange everything. It all turned out so beautiful.” It’s also a good thing she accepted the extra help because a small hiccup popped up on wedding day. Her sister accidentally left her bouquet behind at the rental house.

“My planner and her assistant were pretty great about making sure everything was going smoothly,” Christina said. Thankfully, the assistant was able to retrieve it just in time. She also admits that what started as a project she planned to tackle with just her mom and sister would have been much harder without her friends stepping in.

Keeping the Dance Floor Full Was Always Part of the Plan

Christina and Tom intentionally kept speeches brief because they already knew what everyone was excited for. “My family loves music and to dance, so we definitely had to be on the dance floor.” And that’s exactly where everyone ended up. Surrounded by family and friends, the evening unfolded naturally, with guests spending more time celebrating than sitting through a long list of formalities.

For Christina, one unexpected feeling came after everything was over. “The next day you definitely do have a moment of depression coming down from all the excitement. It’s such a weird feeling to plan for a year or more and it’s over in 24 hours.” It’s partly why she’s such a big advocate for adding extra celebrations if budget allows.

Between the welcome party, cocktail hour, and her wish for a farewell brunch, one thing became very clear: the moments she valued most weren’t tied to decor or timelines. They were the extra pockets of time spent with the people they love. Their downtown Savannah wedding may have lasted a day, but they found ways to make every hour count.

Amber and Andrew’s celebration began long before they exchanged vows. Guests gathered for days of boating, live music, campfires, and time spent together in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, creating an experience that felt more like a getaway with family and friends than a traditional wedding.

The location played a big role in that. The couple chose to host their Eastern Sierra wedding in a region that had been part of their relationship for years. They had spent countless days hiking, camping, climbing, biking, and snowboarding in the area, making it an easy choice when it came time to decide where to get married.

A Relationship Nearly Two Decades in the Making

Amber and Andrew first met in Santa Barbara in 2008 while they were both students. Andrew was attending the Marine Dive Tech Program at Santa Barbara City College, while Amber was studying Communications at UC Santa Barbara.

Mutual friends brought them together for a movie night, and the connection was immediate. A few months later, they started dating and have been together ever since. “Being together was so easy and we were always laughing and learning together,” Amber shared.

By the time they started planning their wedding, they had already spent years building a life together through travel, outdoor adventures, and countless memories with friends and family.

Choosing a Place That Already Felt Like Home

The location was the first and most important decision. Over the years, the couple had spent countless weekends hiking, camping, climbing, biking, and snowboarding throughout the Sierra Nevada mountains. When they found Cardinal Village Resort, they knew they had found the right place.

The venue offered everything they were looking for: a beautiful meadow for the ceremony, accommodations that allowed many guests to stay on-site, and a laid-back atmosphere that fit their personalities perfectly.

It also happened to have a pizza oven, which later became one of the most talked-about parts of the reception. With guests staying together all weekend, the celebration felt more like a mountain getaway than a traditional wedding.

Keeping the Wedding Design Simple

With the mountains providing a dramatic backdrop in every direction, Amber and Andrew didn’t feel the need to add much decor. 

Greens and white florals framed the ceremony and reception spaces while the surrounding landscape remained the focal point. The restrained approach felt natural for a couple who wanted the setting—not elaborate design elements—to define the atmosphere.

The result was understated, relaxed, and perfectly suited to the location.

A Ceremony That Honored the Past and Celebrated the Future

The ceremony quickly became one of the most emotional parts of the weekend. The couple exchanged personal vows reflecting on their years together, the adventures they had shared, and the life they had built side by side. Their longtime friend Helen Trickey officiated and incorporated a traditional Scottish handfasting ceremony, where the couple’s hands are bound together, a custom often associated with the phrase “tying the knot.”

One of the most memorable moments came when Andrew honored both of his parents. Just two weeks before the wedding, his mother had passed away after a battle with cancer. During the ceremony, Andrew surprised Amber by scattering a small amount of both his mother and father’s ashes, creating a deeply personal tribute that left few dry eyes among the guests.

A Dress, a Kilt, and Fashion With Personal Meaning

Amber knew exactly what she wanted for her wedding-day look: something elegant that complemented both the setting and Andrew’s traditional Scottish kilt.

She found her Grace Loves Lace gown secondhand through Stillwhite and paired it with a cathedral veil and braided updo for the ceremony. Later in the evening, she changed into a playful Betsey Johnson reception dress, complete with white heart-shaped sunglasses and Dolce Vita platform heels made for dancing.

For Amber, one of the most anticipated moments of the day was seeing Andrew waiting at the end of the aisle in his kilt. Since the beginning of their relationship, she had imagined that moment. “It lived up to my dreams and more.”

The welcome dinner featured its own fashion highlights. Andrew wore a custom embroidered shirt designed by a local artist that incorporated the national flowers of Hong Kong, Scotland, and California—representing the places he has called home. Amber paired a lace dress with one of her favorite custom hats from a local maker.

 

Sneaking Away for Pizza and Lake Photos

Before joining the reception, the newlyweds carved out a few quiet moments together.

They shared a private pizza dinner in their cabin while guests settled in for the evening, then headed to the lake with their photographers after boat rentals had ended for the day.

The brief break gave them a chance to take everything in before returning to the celebration.

Once they made their way back, the focus shifted entirely to dancing.

Turning the Wedding Into a Full Weekend Experience

Creating a memorable experience for guests was one of Amber’s biggest priorities throughout the planning process. The festivities began on Thursday evening at a local brewery and continued through a farewell brunch on Sunday morning. Friday served as the main welcome day, beginning with an afternoon on Lake Sabrina before guests gathered for a welcome dinner featuring a carnitas taco bar and live guitar music. 

The evening quickly turned into an impromptu dance party. “We both had such a great night of food, speeches, and dancing; we were nervous how Saturday could top it.” That focus on hospitality carried through the entire weekend. From the open bar and live music to the late-night campfires outside the cabins, the goal was simple: create plenty of opportunities for people to spend time together.

Incorporating the Things They Love

Throughout the weekend, small details reflected the different influences that have shaped their lives together.

Double happiness cups paid tribute to Andrew’s Hong Kong heritage. Guests received custom koozies featuring an AM logo that Andrew designed and matchboxes designed by Amber.

The signature drinks also carried personal meaning:

  • Old Fashioned for Amber
  • Hong Kong Gunner for Andrew
  • Mischievous Margarita for Bandit

Combined with plenty of wine, Coors Light, and mountain views, the details felt personal without ever feeling overdone. 

A Night of Dancing, Light-Up Batons, and Beer Shotguns

Amber and Andrew created a custom playlist filled with songs they genuinely loved, giving the DJ a soundtrack that felt true to them.

Guests hit the dance floor with light-up headbands, glowing batons, and plenty of enthusiasm. At one point, Andrew gathered a circle of friends for a rally cry and a celebratory beer shotgun before everyone returned to dancing.

The evening ended with a sparkler exit and an Auld Lang Syne circle, another meaningful nod to Andrew’s Scottish roots.

One Last Unexpected Moment

Not everything went exactly according to plan. At one point, the ring bearer made it down the aisle without the rings, sending his mom on a quick dash back to a nearby cabin to retrieve them. Thankfully, everyone laughed, the rings arrived safely, and the ceremony continued without a hitch.

From the welcome dinner and afternoon on Lake Sabrina to the sparkler exit and Auld Lang Syne circle, every part of the celebration reflected the things Amber and Andrew enjoy most: spending time outdoors, bringing people together, and creating memorable experiences for the people they love. With guests staying on-site, afternoons spent on Lake Sabrina, and campfires continuing long after the reception ended, Amber and Andrew created the kind of gathering they had envisioned from the start—one that gave everyone plenty of time to enjoy the mountains and each other’s company.
