Ultra Cool DIY Wedding at the Memphis Agricenter Farmer’s Market

May 14, 2016 | editorial team

Kate and Nikita, who cleverly came up with their own couple nickname “Kit-Kat,” planned a holiday wedding so that their out-of-country family members could all be in attendance. Starting with the timing, everything else started to fall into place after that. With the help of their family and friends, they transformed the Memphis Agricenter Farmer’s Market into their dream wedding venue — decorated with evergreen wreaths and garland, pine cones, burlap and wood accents, and strands and strands of twinkle lights. Kelly Ginn Photography captured all the details from Kate and Nikita’s big day, including the German tradition of sawing a log at the reception to represent the first obstacle a couple must overcome in their marriage.

From the Groom: I think that our first look together was our most memorable moment of the day. It was the moment we had both been waiting on. There were no worries, only joy. Those few moments we got to focus on just each other are moments I will remember for the rest of my life.

I knew from the moment I got engaged that I wanted Kelly & John to photograph our wedding. From our very first conversation, Kelly was nothing but helpful & excited to be a part of our big day. What made Kelly stand out was her natural ability to make people feel beautiful in front of the camera.

When taking on a DIY wedding you need people that will help keep you on track for your vision of the day. For us, it was having my mom & my aunt to help throw ideas at, as well as, roll up their sleeves and do the work with me. No matter what style of wedding you choose, it’s important to have people who will help keep you focused on your vision.

The time of year was one of the most important factors in planning our wedding. With family living abroad, a wedding at the holidays meant they would be in attendance. From there, everything else fell into place with details befitting a winter ceremony and reception.

Our couple name is KitKat, niKITa + KATe. My mom suggested we reach out to Hershey’s, maker of KitKats, to sponsor the wedding. Instead, we opted to send our guests off with KitKat s’mores – perfect for a December wedding.

The décor used burlap, wood accents, and hand-painted kraft paper. The natural elements were punctuated with bright, white linens and navy striped accents. Lighting, comprised of café and string lights, highlighted the architectural features of the barn. The hand-painted kraft paper banners and hanging spheres, made of embroidery hoops and string lights, created rooms within the barn. It allowed for the ceremony and reception to be held in one space with ease.

Enchanting DIY Wedding at Malibu Phoenix

May 7, 2016 | editorial team

Enchanting-DIY-Wedding-Malibu-Phoenix-17

Kelle and Weston said “I do” at Malibu Phoenix, a beautiful hidden estate in Latigo Canyon, well hidden in the hills of Malibu. Their main goal when planning their wedding was to focus on the lasting commitment they were making to one another. Their ceremony was small and intimate, but they opted for larger reception with all their family and friends. With the help of their families, Kelle and Weston transformed Kelle’s Uncle’s backyard into their dream venue: a DIY bar, wooden initial decorations, strands of white lights, and everyone that they love together in one place. Photographer Richard Cao was on-scene capturing all the fun and love from their big day.

From the Groom: The most memorable part of the wedding for me was seeing Kelle come down the aisle. I didn’t expect to be so transfixed but with her walking toward me and the music playing, I was overwhelmed with happiness.

From the Bride: For me, the most memorable part of the wedding day was hearing the vows Weston had written for me! He put so much care and thought into every word. I will cherish those sentiments and the way he looked at me while he was saying them for the rest of my life.

Our main goal throughout the planning process was to keep things stress free. We dated for almost eight years before getting married, so we wanted our wedding day to be focused on our relationship and the commitment we were making, not necessarily on lots of guests, or the details of the party.

Our whole reception was pretty much a giant DIY project since we pieced the whole thing together in the backyard. Kelle’s mom made our incredible cake. Her dad made our entire bar out of pallets! He also made our wooden initials, hung the lights, made our table numbers, and he and Kelle worked together on the hanging, wooden seating chart. It was definitely a family affair.

We had our reception in Kelle’s uncle’s backyard. The house was formerly owned by her grandparents. It’s the home where her mom grew up and where Kelle spent many afternoons as a child, playing with cousins and spending time with her grandparents. It was super cool to be able to make one of life’s greatest memories in a place that already means so much.

DIY Fairy Tale Backyard Wedding in Bellingham, Washington

April 29, 2016 | editorial team

DIY-Fairy-Tale-Backyard-Wedding-Bellingham-Washington-38

Courtney and Matt decided to have a backyard wedding in Bellingham, and it was nothing short of a fairytale. They never thought they were going to find a venue that would represent who they were more than their own backyard. Matt’s parents’ home is surrounded by five acres of lush forests and beloved views of the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands. Through loads and loads of DIY, what Courtney and Matt called a labor of love, the couple and their friends and family transformed the home into the rustic venue of their dreams. Twyla Jones Photography captured every sweet moment from this laid back woodland wedding, and the entire day was glamorous and magical and truly a fairytale come to life.

There aren’t really any other opportunities in your life when you get to have everyone you love in one place – that was not lost on us and creating a magical space for soaking up every ounce of that was our ultimate goal.

DIY-Fairy-Tale-Backyard-Wedding-Bellingham-Washington-35

My bridesmaids all have incredible taste and are maybe more fashionable than me, so I really just sort of gave some general guidance and let them take the wheel on what they wanted to wear. They all have special individual looks and I really wanted them to be able to be that and show that at our wedding! We eventually settled on some really lightweight chiffon Etsy skirts that came in a bunch of colors and they took it from there.

I wanted to be comfortable and have a look that was glamorous but also free flowing and a little bit boho. My favorite piece of my look was my gorgeous cathedral length blush veil which had a 4 foot blusher. I wore it for about two seconds and one of my few regrets is not wearing it more!

Every wedding is hard work and by definition, a “labor of love” – but our wedding was truly a community effort of love that took that to another level and made it something really special. My now husband Matt and I knew that we wanted to get married on his parents beautiful property on the scenic Chuckanut Drive, south of Bellingham, WA where we would be surrounded by lush forests and views of the Puget sound that we love so much.

We love dogs, and our placeholders were little golden dogs with people’s names on them.

DIY-Fairy-Tale-Backyard-Wedding-Bellingham-Washington-41

For us, because of the venue, that meant creating sort of a laid back, rustic yet still glamorous, woodland fairytale type of vibe. That involved really soft colors, a lush environment that only the Pacific Northwest could provide, awesome laid back people, and lots and lots of lights. I’m a firm believer that lighting makes a party.

Whimsical DIY Wedding at Stara Oranzeria in Poland

March 30, 2016 | Junebug Weddings

Whimsical-DIY-Wedding-Stara-Oranzeria-Poland-WhiteSmoke-Studio-16

It was the hottest day of summer when Kasia and Artur tied the knot at Stara Oranżeria. The Polish greenhouse venue appealed to couple’s stylish and free-spirited vibes, and looked absolutely dreamy filled with the whimsical DIY decor of the wedding. WhiteSmoke Studio captured the effortless joy and unique details of the day, from Kasia’s custom pink embroidered dress to the newlyweds’ first cha cha on the dancefloor.

Arthur is a photographer and I’m a make-up artist, so we work every day in the world of fashion and beauty, and our wedding look was a reflection of our daily style. Artur chose white trousers, white shirt, brown suspenders, a blue jacket with white buttons, floral bow tie pattern with pink parrot and brogue shoes. I had a short pastel pink dress with floral lace designed by a young Polish designer embroidered by hand with silver Swarovski crystals. My dress shimmered in the sun! I love everything about my wedding dress; it is literally perfect and unique. I had a lovely wreath with golden leaves on my head.

Whimsical-DIY-Wedding-Stara-Oranzeria-Poland-WhiteSmoke-Studio-6

The most important part of planning was dreaming up our style and picking a location. We wanted to feel natural and free on our wedding day, so we chose an old outdoor greenhouse. We had a small, romantic wedding that was fancy and full of colors.

The most memorable part of our day was the ceremony and marriage vows. Surrounded by bridesmaids and groomsmen and family, with everyone watching, it was stressful, but also beautiful and full of love and emotion.

We wanted to combine the colors of greenhouses and garden with our vision. At the beginning, we wanted to use pastel colors but they very poorly harmonized with the natural greenery. Finally we chose white, lime, pastel and intense yellow.

Intimate DIY Backyard Kentucky Wedding

December 21, 2015 | Junebug Weddings

Intimate-DIY-Backyard-Kentucky-Wedding-Godie-and-Christine-21

Shannon and Tim’s Kentucky wedding took place in their own backyard, where event designer Tweed and Tin created a colorful and intimate setting for dinner with their closest friends and family. A few DIY elements like the groom’s bow ties and paint-dipped glass vases ensured that the wedding was filled with playful spirit throughout. Photographers Goldie & Christine captured that spirit in every image, as well as the quiet moments shared between Shannon and Tim on their big day.

We wanted something small and low stress. We only invited our parents, grandparents, siblings and a few close friends. From there we started building the idea of having the reception in the backyard of the house we purchased together. From there we picked some colors we liked and let our vendors run with it. Rachel from Tweed and Tin did an amazing job decorating the back yard.

DIY Maryland Wedding at Caboose Farm

Wood, copper, and neutral tones were the inspiring materials behind Ben and Natalie’s wedding design. Caboose Farm in Maryland presented an outdoor space filled with fallen leaves and a serene atmosphere, which was a perfect place to surround the couple as they said “I do.” Autumn Kern Photo documented the incredible moments at this sweet DIY wedding.

Natalie: My Nonni (Dad’s Mom) gave me her garter from her wedding 60+ years ago to wear, and my Mom gave me David Yurman Starburst earrings for my something new. My bridesmaid and best friend, Kat, made me a necklace to match my vintage engagement ring!

From the couple: We are both very casual, so we wanted everything to reflect our personal style. Once we found the best venue ever, Caboose Farm, it all fell into place. Our flowers were from Richfield farm, which is local & we buy them all the time at the farmer’s market under 83, so we knew we wanted them for the wedding. We chose to not have a color scheme, just what we referred to as “wood, copper & neutral tones” to compliment the beautiful nature. We both wanted the bridal party to be comfortable and themselves as well, so the bridesmaid had “infinity dresses” to choose which style. My dress was Leanna Marshall and I fell in love with it at Lovely Bride in Philadelphia, only fitting to go back to the city I fell in love to look for a dress.

Ben: I loved the moment I got see Natalie for the first time that day as she walked down the aisle. It was so hard that day to not see each other, you spend months planning and dreaming of that day but you spend so many hours apart! When I saw her walk through our grassy isle it all became so real, a million emotions run over you and the smile just couldn’t be wiped off my face.

From the couple: For the wood slab centerpieces, we chopped down a dead tree on our friend Ryan’s property, all of the candles were hand poured by us, scented with vanilla & lavender. Most fun for me was flower arrangements, I got to put together my own bouquet and even more special was my Dad brought sunflowers (a tradition between us) for it too.

DIY Texas Wedding at The Hoffman Haus

September 9, 2015 | Junebug Weddings

DIY-Texas-Wedding-at-The-Hoffman-Haus-Mercedes-Morgan-Photography (18 of 21)

The Hoffman Haus, a quintessentially Texas venue nestled in the Hill Country, set the stage for Alanna and Noah’s whimsical DIY wedding. Taking the wedding into their own hands — literally! — Alanna and Noah handcrafted each element of their day, from the ceremony huppah to the reception centerpieces. Mercedes Morgan Photography captured the couple saying “I do” beneath hanging parasols and embracing in the golden hour light for the first time as husband and wife.

The Couple:

Alanna and Noah

The Wedding:

The Hoffman Haus, Frericksburg, Texas

The Inspiration:

Rustic meets romance was my inspiration. I wanted the wedding to look timeless and unique, as well as highlight the reasons why we fell in love with our venue, The Hoffman Haus. My color palette was rose pink, silver, hints of sage green and rustic wood colors. We tried to do as many DIY touches as we could. Noah made the huppah and I hand-cut the wine bottles used for the succulents in the centerpieces.

My dress was bought from a bridal salon in Boston and is Amsale Summer — it has hints of romance and glamour, which was the look that I was going for. I wore a mid-length veil and glittery sandals to pull the look together (I didn’t want to be bothered by heels on my big day!). I wore no jewelry because I wanted the dress to shine by itself.

DIY St. Lucia Wedding in Soufriere

September 8, 2015 | Junebug Weddings

DIY-St-Lucia-Wedding-Soufriere-Nordica-Photography (11 of 23)

Not wanting to leave their destination wedding to chance, Thy and Ben personalized their St. Lucia wedding with DIY elements handcrafted by friends and family. The tropical wedding began with an emotional ceremony at Tamarind House before the newlyweds headed off into the beautiful Soufriere with Nordica Photography for an incredibly romantic photo shoot.

The Couple:

Thy and Ben

The Wedding:

Tamarind House, Soufriere, St. Lucia

The Inspiration:

We wanted everything to reflect our tastes and only our tastes so we made all of the decor ourselves with help from friends and family in New York and at the venue in St. Lucia. The venue was basically a beautiful blank canvas with an amazing backdrop of St. Lucia’s Pitons. We wanted subtle pastel accent decor to compliment the white floorboards and decking of this amazing villa.

Since we are based in New York with family and friends from all over the world, we decided that a wedding holiday would be so much more fun. When we started planning our wedding, our requirements were pretty simple — to have an awesome party in an amazing location. We chose St. Lucia in the Caribbean for the stunning scenery and laid-back vibe. Forty of our nearest and dearest were able to join us from as far as Alaska, England, Ethiopia and Australia for our wedding in a private villa. Our wedding had a huge DIY element to it, we brought all our decorations in our luggage and created our own photo-booth set up. This gave the venue the exact aesthetic that we were looking for and it was great to have our personal touch all over the villa. The view from the villa was otherworldly and made the perfect backdrop. Our wedding was more fun than we could have ever anticipated.

The Moments:

Having the villa to ourselves, guests jumping in the infinity pool while others danced on the deck above, the amazing local St. Lucian staff that we hired to DJ and cater the event, bad karaoke, great food and drinks and some of the most amazing photos to remember it all by.

The Couple Recommends:

We were really lucky to have Jakob from Nordica photograph our wedding. Photography is very important to us and we could not have asked for better results. Nordica were very professional and easy to work with and it was a pleasure to have Jakob with us. He did an amazing job of capturing the gorgeous scenery and the moments that really mattered. We have so many beautiful photos to remind us of our best time ever and the stunning setting in which it happened.

It was also a pleasure working with the local St. Lucian vendors who were so much fun. Everyone was amazing.

DIY Country Wedding in New Zealand

September 6, 2015 | Junebug Weddings

DIY-Country-Wedding-in-New-Zealand (25 of 40)

After being apart for three months because Laura was spending time at home in Perth with her mom, Jason made a romantic gesture and flew to meet her to propose! The couple spent the next four months panning their rustic wedding at his family farm in Dannevirke, New Zealand. Wooden signs, soft pink florals, and dreamy dark clouds all came together to create a romantic setting for the couple to tie the knot. David Le Design & Photography captured this country wedding perfectly!

The Couple:

Jason and Laura

The Wedding:

Private Residence, Dannevirke, New Zealand

The Inspiration:

Country, Rustic, DIY. We had four months to plan and execute everything, so I had to try and stop myself thinking up more things I “needed” at our wedding before I ran out of time.

The speeches were my favorite part, I wasn’t expecting such amazing words from our Family and Friends, It was very special.

The Couple Recommends:

As for the professionals, our photographer was my favorite person on the day, other than the groom. He was always around taking precious photos that I knew were special moments, he had a great relaxed vibe and gave direct instructions to everybody involved in the photographs so they turned out really well. Hester Guy Catering also did an outstanding job of organising their staff and serving our guest delicious vegetarian Canapés and an amazing buffet spread, with huge smiles on their faces all day and night.

Roni and Vinny’s sweet, cozy wedding at Sorella Farms in Virginia was surrounded by tall, soft grasses, quietly flowing water, and a glowing, sunny atmosphere, which created the ultimate serene setting for their romantic wedding. Personalizing their big day, the couple, friends, and family designed an awesome DIY wedding. K. Jugar Photography perfectly captured the sentimental details at this lovely farm wedding.

The Couple:

Roni and Vinny

The Wedding:

Sorella Farms, Evington, Virginia

The Inspiration:

I’ve always been and old-fashioned type of person. I love all things vintage. The vintage barn of Sorella Farms and my grandmother’s (altered) lace wedding dress added to the vintage decor.

The Moments:

Roni‘s favorite moment was seeing Vinny‘s face as she walked up from the lake and down the aisle. Vinny‘s favorite moment was walking back to our car getting pelted with lavender.

The Couple Recommends:

Our photographer K. Jugar did such an amazing job! He was patient, great with our families, and had great ideas! Sorella Farms was such a gorgeous venue. It was the only one we looked at and we knew right away it was the one. Brooke, Mary, and Danielle were so kind and caring. Also, Carissa, the seamstress from The Gilded Thimble, did such considerate, talented work putting some modern flare into my grandmother’s vintage dress. And lastly, Kaitlyn Layfield really helped me relax before the ceremony and was so patient and prepared and did a beautiful job on my hair and makeup.
