Vibrant Hawaiian-Inspired Millwick Wedding in Los Angeles

February 18, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

To pay homage to their romantic tropical engagement, Stephanie and Jordan brought Hawaii to California in their Millwick wedding in downtown LA. Playing off the retro tropical vibes of the venue, they and the planners at Honeycomb Affair brought in vibrant coral and pink florals, pineapples, and a variety of tropical leaves to create an urban oasis for their friends and family. Every detail made it easy to forget this wedding didn’t take place on the Big Island — and that this wedding took place in the winter! But then we saw the cool juxtapositions Vitae Weddings captured of the bride, groom, and wedding party against the funky downtown murals and were reminded just how much we love urban weddings.

The Couple:

Stephanie and Jordan

The Wedding:

Millwick, Los Angeles, California

Looking back, I can still remember the most sincere happiness I have ever felt. I can’t put into words the emotion that I felt — it was nerves, excitement, and happiness all in one. My florist bringing the flowers to my bridal suite and the reality of the day finally hit me. It had been the one of the rainiest winters we have had in LA in years, and I had been so stressed about the weather leading up to the wedding day. But, when she brought in the flowers and they were everything I imagined, it was like I hit a reset button and all of my worries just didn’t matter anymore. Rain or shine, the day and all the details I had planned were happening! Amazingly, the rain cleared and it turned out to be truly be the most beautiful day.

The most special part of the ceremony was that my dad married us. We wrote the ceremony with him and incorporated personal stories of our lives, how we met, what we appreciate about each other, and together we wrote our vows. We wanted the ceremony to feel like a moment where our lives truly intersected. It was so special to have my dad at the center of it!

We loved our photographers! They were everywhere without seeming like they were anywhere. They made everyone feel so at ease and comfortable, and they made taking photos fun. I loved all the different locations in downtown LA — the blank cement walls, the graffiti, etc — so they scouted the location before and found some of the most amazing backdrops for the photos. I loved having the juxtaposition of the simple colors of the bridesmaids dresses, the stark white wedding dress, and the cleanness of the suits against the industrial and city backdrops.

We fell in love with Millwick because it immediately gave us the feeling that we were another place from the minute we walked in. We loved that it didn’t look like much from the street, but when we entered it was a beautiful hidden gem. We loved all the greenery and the funky vibe and decor of the venue. The wallpapered bar, the brick and lush exterior, and the intricate details of the inside hall were so simple and subtle yet stunning. We wanted our guests to feel like they were in a tropical oasis and we felt that feeling as soon as we walked into Millwick.

Our advice is to not get overwhelmed by looking at everyone else’s weddings. There are so many beautiful weddings online and endless options for things to add, but it is important to be true to yourself and your own personal style. That is what people want to see and experience at your wedding. They want to feel like they are sharing a piece of your life. Pick a theme/style and venue and stick with it; don’t try to do too much. Know what is important to you and make those elements the focal part of the day.

Your wedding should be a true representation of you and your partner. We wanted our guests to all feel like they were at a big family gathering, so we did a family-style dinner. I am not a huge fan of desserts so I made the dessert all about my husband. He loves cookies, so we did an ice cream cookie sandwich bar and just did a small cake for a photo. Jordan and I eat tacos literally once or twice a week for dinner so we also brought in a taco truck for a late-night meal.

This Heartfelt Roche Harbor Resort Wedding is Pure Enchantment

February 17, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

After taking a trip to Roche Harbor Resort early in their relationship and falling in love with it immediately, Niki and Kelsie knew it was the perfect place to say “I do!” The waterfront venue offered both a beautiful setting for their wedding celebration and an incredible backdrop for their couple portraits with photographer Sarah Karlan. Using a mix of simple greenery and vintage-meets-rustic decor, they took the romantic feel up a level and created a relaxed yet elegant day that was full of heartfelt moments and surprises. We are obsessed with these stylish brides’ modern twist on classic wedding style with an elegant Galina Signature ballgown paired with a naturally wavy down hairstyle and tailored Sharpe Suiting with nude heels and a chic bun.

The Couple:

Niki and Kelsie

The Wedding:

Roche Harbor Resort, Friday Harbor, Washington

In the first few years of our relationship, our status as a couple wasn’t known to many people for various reasons. One of the first trips we took together was to Roche Harbor. It was a quiet weekend in winter and as we roamed the beautiful grounds of the resort, we saw the staff setting up for a wedding. I think at this point, we both knew that we would end up together, but the idea of a wedding seemed so outlandish to us. We started fantasizing about getting married at Roche Harbor but we knew that it was probably a pipe dream. Several years later, we were out, engaged, and excited! Roche Harbor was always in the back of our minds and when we reached out to inquire about the venue, everything fell into place seamlessly. It felt serendipitous to tell our guests this story at our reception as it was all quite literally, our dream come true.

A small surprise for our guests were the family dogs who made a show-stopping cameo at our ceremony! Two of our family’s old English sheepdogs were fluffed and ready to walk down the aisle and they were a huge hit. The puppy, Violet was an adorable and unpredictable bundle, while Rose, the well-trained big sister carried our rings down the aisle. Our guests loved seeing the pups and it was a funny surprise for all of us when Rose was reluctant to get up during the ceremony to give us our rings and needed a little (not so little) tug.

Having spent most of the day getting ready and making sure that everything was coming together, our favorite moments were right after the ceremony when things finally started to slow down. It all had felt pretty surreal until then, and our photographers were able to capture beautiful, genuine moments as it all sunk in and we realized we were finally married. I don’t think either of us will forget how it felt to be together as a married couple for the first time.

We felt so extremely lucky to not only have phenomenal photographers, but ones that we could call our friends. Sarah and I work for the same company and I knew that when it came time to choosing someone to capture our wedding, no one would be better! Sarah and Becca were always fun and easy going, had every next step planned out, and found so many gorgeous spots on the resort for us to take pictures. We didn’t realize it at the time, but you spend most of your wedding day with your photographers and we felt so fortunate to spend it with wonderful friends who were able to capture our most intimate moments.

Everyone and their mom will give you advice on how to plan your wedding! Take the advice that you like and feel free to ignore the rest! This is an age old tradition and everyone will have their opinions but at the end of the day, if you and your spouse are happy and excited, everyone else will be too. We spent so much time worrying about how much fun our guests will or won’t have but on the actual day, they were all just happy to be with us regardless of the dessert options or photo booth props.

Spanish-Inspired Arizona Wedding at The Paseo

February 17, 2018 | Junebug Weddings

Lauren and Amir’s wedding at The Paseo was a beautiful mix of sultry Spanish style and rustic desert charm. Their outdoor ceremony was perfectly framed by a view of the Superstition Mountains. In true Spanish fashion, their indoor reception featured a combination of rich and vibrant colors alongside classic and elegant details, the highlight being the floral and giant balloon centerpieces created by J Barry Designs. The bride wore a stunning Marchesa gown with a removable peplum that took her look from romantic for the ceremony to flirty and fun for the reception, and the groom looked equally stylish in a custom tan suit from Trunk Club that Lauren created herself. Overall, the vibe was festive yet sophisticated, and Sincerely Yara Photographie captured every element beautifully!

The Couple:

Lauren and Amir

The Wedding:

The Paseo, Apache Junction, Arizona

We wanted to keep our wedding within the vibe we always envisioned. We wanted something warm and colorful, ethnic and bright. We wanted guests to feel a spicy Spanish vibe because we love that food and culture! We wanted our guests to feel like they were transported to a private oasis — something rich in food and decadency and some place that they could feel all of our love. We are very loving, expressive people, and we wanted our wedding to reflect just that.

Walking down the aisle was the most memorable part of the day. We didn’t do a first look, and the moment when the doors open was what we had always dreamed of. Seeing each other for the first time in that moment, surrounded by loved ones, was so special. We also wrote our vows. Hearing them for the first time and seeing each other in the rich sunlight was magical!

Throughout all the planning, Amir wanted me to be happy and always trusted my vision. I knew I wanted bright and colorful flowers with rich greenery for the wedding. I also wanted something that would be a great canvas for the colorful accessories to the wedding. We chose for the wedding party to be in all white and tan, crisp and clean. I wore a Marchesa dress that I was obsessed with from the beginning. It fell in line with our Spanish feel but was also flirty and whimsical with delicate lace. It came with a removal peplum, which was so darn cool. My husband looked so handsome in his custom suit! I work for Trunk Club and style men all day, so it was amazing to finally create such a special piece for our wedding day. I loved everything about our looks as a whole!

Our advice would be to determine what your vision is and know what you gravitate towards. Whether traditional or eclectic, use examples from what you as a couple like in daily life to bring into your wedding. My mom was my right hand woman and planner extraordinaire — she deserves a prize! She has been creative her whole life, with a great eye and vision, she was able to help execute the best ideas. So, our other advice is: if you have someone in your life to help like we did, bring them on board.
