Retro Wedding at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre with Pops of Coral

September 11, 2020 | riley

Calling all music lovers–this one’s for you. Tanya and Nick’s retro wedding at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre is the epitome of unique. Using vintage pieces, plenty of macrame details from Loubelle Macrame, eclectic Turkish rugs, vibrant florals by Ivy Amelia Florals, and a coral color palette, the bride–whose own business, Daydreamer Creative Studio, designed the entire day–created a party that transported us back to the 70s. Not to mention Tanya’s Grace Loves Lace vintage-inspired gown and custom painted white leather jacket complete with tassels that perfectly matched the vibes of the day.

Natalie J Weddings perfectly captured the free-spirited essence of this party, and we’re so glad she decided to share it with Junebug.

The Couple:

Tanya and Nick

The Wedding:

Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Quainton, Buckinghamshire, UK

The Rock n’ Roll Retro Wedding Day Vibe

We wanted a personal, relaxed boho vibe for our day with a 70s feel and we love everything retro or vintage. We weren’t worried about things matching or going together; and instead just picked out everything we loved. A lot of the decor were things we already had in our home, or I had collected from thrift shops. Everything else was borrowed from The Little Lending Company.

DIYing the Wedding

I designed all the stationery, including the invitations, order of service, and menus. The table cloths I made out of dust sheets which I dip-dyed orange. I handmade all the napkins–dying baby muslins a beautiful rust color. Nick is a carpenter, so he cut lots of wood for signage– which I then stained, painted, and calligraphed. As a joint effort, we made our seating chart, which was one of our favorite things. Nick made the wooden frame, and I taught myself how to macrame so we could hang the wooden boards with the seating plan. I painted my bridal jacket–and if that wasn’t enough–a week before the wedding, I decided to add in tassels to the sleeves

A Song-Filled Ceremony

To personalize our ceremony and share our love of music, we had a guest sing along to ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie sung by our musician Jon Hart. Then all the guests joined it. My sister then read the lyrics ‘Make Me Feel Your Love’ by Bob Dylan.

Why the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre

We wanted a unique venue that wasn’t too far away for friends and family. We weren’t having much luck, and it wasn’t until our florist, Victoria mentioned Buckinghamshire Railway Centre to us. When we went to check it out, as soon as we saw it, we fell in love with it. Our guests would feel like they had a ‘day out’ that they won’t forget for a while. How many wedding guests can say they’ve been to a wedding at a Railway Museum and gotten to ride on a vintage train?

A Musical Wedding Reception

The most memorable part of the day was when–in the evening–our band sang ‘Hey Jude’ and all of our friends and family circled around us, singing their hearts out. It was the moment we realized that everyone that we loved and cared about was right there with us; it felt magical.

Jewel Tone Scotland Elopement at Cairngorms National Park

September 10, 2020 | riley

Lizzie and Aaron’s Scotland elopement at Cairngorms National Park has everything we love about adventure elopements: breathtaking scenery, venues rich in history, unique style, and sentimental details. These California natives–with the help of expert planner and Junebug member, The Stars Inside–created a magical day based around Dutch Master floral paintings with the help of a deep jewel tone color palette, crystal glassware, antique decor, and personal touches such as a cameo ring the bride’s mother bought in Florence in 1970.

After tying the knot at St. Margaret’s of Braemar Church, the two trekked down into the Scottish forests to take stunning portraits–captured beautifully by Sophia Veres Photography. They enjoyed authentic Scottish fare and champagne in their private suite to end the night, where the two got to soak up the feeling of being newlyweds.

Valentina of The Stars Inside on the Day

As lovers of architecture, art, and travel, this Californian couple chose to celebrate their marriage in Braemar–the heart of the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Their intimate elopement started with a handfasting ceremony at a decommissioned church and ended with gourmet food and bespoke cocktails amidst the art-covered and history-laden walls of The Fife Arms. The day also featured a myriad of tearful, personal details, including an adventurous photoshoot in the mountains and an outfit change to die for.

The Couple:

Lizzie and Aaron

The Wedding:

St Margaret’s of Braemar & The Fife Arms, Cairngorms National Park, Scotland

Why a Scotland Elopement

From the start, we knew that it was essential to pick a location that would put us in the right mindset for a ceremony to embrace romance and solemnity. The simultaneous history, whimsy, and mystery of the Scottish Highlands made it the perfect location for us. Our hotel and dinner location was the Fife Arms. This incredible hotel was actually the reason we went from joking about eloping to Scotland to deciding it was perfect for us. Recently renovated, the Fife Arms is filled with art. From a Picasso overseeing the tea room to a contemporary blown glass antler neon chandelier, and even a watercolor by Queen Victoria.

The Sarah Seven Dress

I loved how simple and comfortable my dress was while still having a sense of excitement with the open back. The long sleeves were perfect for winter in the highlands, and a wool tartan blanket (a nod to Aaron’s ancestry) helped keep me warm while we explored the surrounding countryside. For the ceremony look, I wore medium-sized drop pearl earrings reminiscent of the women in Dutch Master paintings. They were paired with a cameo ring my mother bought in Florence in 1970. These simple pieces were beautiful in their own right but didn’t make too much of a statement.

St. Margaret’s of Braemar Church

We found out about St Margaret’s of Braemar while researching the area surrounding the hotel. It was impossible not to instantly fall in love with its gothic revival architecture and beautiful stained glass windows. It was even more special when we learned more about Saint Margaret– the lesser talked about Patron Saint of Scotland–and its renowned architect Sir Ninian Comper, who has also designed stained glass for Westminster Abbey. While once an active church in Victorian times, the church was decommissioned and closed until recently. Luckily for us, St Margarets was newly refurbished into a community concert hall and art exhibit space.

The Dutch Master Wedding Theme

We chose the theme of Dutch Master floral paintings to enhance the historical feeling of the buildings without being overtly thematic of our Scottish location. We thought the venues spoke for themselves and didn’t need more help. Dutch still-life paintings juxtapose masculinity and femininity, light and dark, and soft and stark in a way that resonated with the story we wanted to tell in our wedding. Marriage–to us–encompasses all aspects of love, life, and relationships.

A Traditional Scottish Dinner

We really wanted for our wedding was for it to be a unique new experience for us. The wedding menu was no different. For dinner, we were looking for flavors that would be special to the day and embracing local cuisine, so we went with venison and pheasant cooked in milk. Our wedding cake flavors were a bit less traditional, with a tier each of banana rum and whiskey caramel.

A Reception Outfit Change

For the evening portion of our wedding, I changed into a sequin gown that was more in line with the bubbly side of my personality. I switched the earrings to larger drop pearl ones to keep it simple but still amp up the drama. It was fun to have a wedding dress change to help showcase different parts of my personal style and character.

Rustic, DIY, and Secondhand Wedding at Pencarrow Lodge

September 9, 2020 | riley

Yinny and Yong-Le wanted their New Zealand forest wedding to be a fun weekend getaway for their friends and family. When they stumbled upon Pencarrow Lodge, they knew it was the perfect spot. Their day was full of DIY touches including a copper painted PVC pipe arch, a picture frame installation that served as a photo backdrop, a faux flower photo wall, and personalized calligraphed driftwood that served as place cards. While it may be a bit time consuming, this goes to show you that a DIY wedding is not only one of the best ways to add your special touch to your day, it can also be the best way to make it sustainable!

Photographer Jane Lee perfectly captured the warmth of the day as well as the small touches that are easy to miss. So keep your eyes peeled and get those Pinterest boards ready, Junebabes. You won’t want to miss these details.

The Couple:

Yinny and Yong-Le

The Wedding:

Pencarrow Lodge, Eastbourne, Wellington, New Zealand

Why a Pencarrow Lodge Wedding

We were really fortunate to have found a gem of a venue for our wedding. It’s perched on a hill by the ocean, showcasing the amazing rugged coastal landscape Wellington is famed for. On a nice day–lucky for us our wedding day was beautiful–you can see the South Island on the horizon and sheep grazing on the rugged paddocks. We fell in love with having our wedding at the venue the first time we went for a tour. It was only about an hour out of the city, the view is amazing, and we knew we’d be making unforgettable memories for us as well as our family and friends flying in.

DIY Wedding Advice

If you’re planning to DIY, our advice would be to start early. Visit your local second-hand shops to see what’s out there already. Join Facebook groups–there are plenty out there where people are selling things they no longer want. And, at the end of the day, don’t forget to absorb and take in the moment–all the hard work came down to this.

A Charitable Wedding Favor

On behalf of all our guests, we donated to Kaibosh–our local food rescue charity–which rescues and redistributes food and produce from the hospitality industry to the people in need. In return, Kaibosh gave us magnets with a personalized message, which we paired with postcards we designed ourselves that explained our wedding favor for them. We decided to give the gift of giving as it bore more meaning and provided us a way to share this day with even more people.

A Reception Complete With a Haircut

Yong-Le had a head full of dreadlocks when I first met him and that was the only look of his that I knew. However, at our cake cutting, he whipped out a pair of scissors–which he presented to both our dads–and started untying his dread-bun. Let’s just say that both of our dads weren’t very keen on his dreads. By the end of the night, I went home with a transformed man. A few days later, I lost him in the crowd when we took my family sightseeing!
