The Wedding: 2.11.11 – Chelsea Old Church – London, United Kingdom

What adjectives best describe your wedding? Glamorous and romantic

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? My inspiration has always been Chanel so I stuck to the classic white and black theme but we incorporated a touch of red for Valentine’s Day. The church was filled with flowers and we had an eight piece choir with an organist and a trumpeter which really gave some umph to the hymns! The choir sang my grandma’s favorite song – “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. We love good food, so choosing the Belvedere, a Marco Pierre White restaurant as our reception location guaranteed us good food! We chose a cheese cake rather than a traditional cake and it was important for us to have lots of flowers along with lots of candles and mirrors to portray a very romantic feel to the day. Joe and I are followers of fashion, so both my dress and his suit were classic but with a stylish edge. Also, we created table names and a table plan to reflect Joe’s love of cricket!

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? The bridesmaids and best men looking stunning and very coordinated was one of my favorite memories! I cried all the way through the choir singing “Wonderful World”, it was one of those moments where you get goose bumps all over! We had the wonderful opportunity to have the Astin Martin and London Red Bus to take us from the church to the reception at the Belvedere restaurant. I think it was so rewarding to see how my hard work had paid off, especially the restaurant looking so beautiful, it just all came together perfectly. Also, it was thrilling to sneak away from the party with my husband for a quiet 20 minutes in the grounds of the park to reflect on the wonderful memories of the day.

What was your wedding color palette? Black and white, with a touch of red.

The Wedding: 3.12.11 – Studio 450, New York City, New York

What three adjectives that best describe your wedding? Personal, New York, Happy

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Neil and I wanted our guests to see us in the details of our wedding and really feel like they were a special part of the day. We chose unique music and readings for the ceremony that evoked emotion for us personally (Shel Silverstein’s hug of war was on our programs, and my sister sang Didos Thank You). We hung wedding pictures of the wedding party and close family who were married or soon to be married at the reception. We are both from the New York area, and we reunited and started dating after a fateful run-in at a New York dive bar. We wanted the night to feel natural, simple, chic, and city. Once we found Studio 450, that all came easily. The place is a blank white canvas with tons of windows in the ceremony/reception area that overlook the Hudson, so decided to focus on the views. The cocktail hour space upstairs had panoramic views of the Hudson on one side and New York city on the other. We timed the ceremony just before sunset, so the natural light streamed through and gave a soft, golden glow to the pale yellow runner and forsythia branches. A family friend played acoustic guitar and sang during the cocktail hour upstairs where the guests could casually enjoy the sunset. After sunset, when the guests returned to the ceremony area that changed into the reception, the room felt like a different space. We had tons of high and low candles and long tables with low airy yellow, green and gold flower arrangements that led the guests’ eyes out to the night sky.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Besides saying I do before our very best childhood friends, my favorite moment was when my sister sang Thank You during our ceremony. The words never rang more true then when she sang it that day. It was just after our vows, so I had a chance to feel my own emotion, and look around the room and see true emotion in our guests’ eyes. She sang it beautifully, and it was a truly special moment. My two best decisions were choosing Real Foods Catering and Alison Conklin as our photographer. Yen, from Real Foods became a sort of wedding planner, who not only served amazingly unique food, but also guided me on choosing china, room set up, and overall coordination and timing of events. I LOVE HER. Alison and her husband could not have been better photographers. I was VERY nervous about all the attention, and they both made the day feel so natural. I never would have imagined the amazing images they were able to capture. I look back and really can’t believe that was actually my wedding. I was anxious to take my cathedral veil off (Im the person who originally didnt want to wear a veil at all) but Alison gently encouraged me to keep my veil on long enough to take pictures on the rooftop deck, and Im so happy I listened to her. The pictures with it flowing in the wind are breathtaking. What I loved the most about our wedding was the personal feeling of love and friendship. We were married by two of our dearest friends, we passed around our rings so all of our guests could bless them before we placed them on each other’s fingers, a family friend played our ceremony and cocktail music, and we danced the night away (and after-party away) surrounded by wonderful people.

Wedding color palette: Yellow, gold, and green.

Intimate Panama Destination Elopement at Nikki Beach Resort – Frances and Jimi

June 24, 2011 | editorial team

After months of wedding planning that just wasn’t working out, Frances and Jimi decided to “run away” to get married and they had an ultra- romantic wedding for two at the Nikki Beach Resort in Panama. Focusing just on their love for each other, their wedding day was stress-free, intimate and full of joy! These wonderful photos by Davina + Daniel show us the beauty and fun of a true elopement!

The Goals: Frances and Jimi’s decision to elope was probably their biggest challenge. Originally they had planned for a destination wedding with family and friends in Mexico, but due to unforeseen circumstances, many of their loved ones wouldn’t be able to attend. “Our budget was calling for some major breathing room, stress was mounting, and our wedding started to feel like fitting a square peg into a round hole. This wasn’t what I imagined planning my wedding would feel like. Even though eloping was always something we considered, it wasn’t an easy decision. We took turns throwing our hands up and exclaiming ‘That’s it! We’re eloping, period!’ only to change our minds the next day. Luckily, both our families had expressed total support whatever our decision. Ultimately, we took a deep breath and threw the whole thing into the wind. And right along with it, stress and anxiety just vanished.”

The Design: Since it was just the two of them at their wedding, Frances and Jimi didn’t focus much on details, but they splurged on a few of the priorities that were important to them. Frances found the wedding dress of her dreams, they chose the beautiful Nikki Beach Resort, now the Royalton Playa Blanca Spa & Resort, as their location, and they arranged a lovely honeymoon. With Frances’ own experience as a wedding photographer, having her wedding captured on film was also “non-negotiable,” and being friends of the talented photographers Davina + Daniel, they were the perfect people to shoot her special day.

The Moments: Because of foreign legalities, Frances and Jimi found themselves enjoying a two-part ceremony! “On a Friday we had our legal ceremony on our rooftop in Panama City, Saturday we traveled to the resort, and Sunday we had what we considered to be our real ceremony, with a friend officiating, the dress, our vows and rings. We didn’t expect to love this arrangement but having our wedding extended this way just made for more amazing moments.”

On the wedding day itself, Frances and Jimi had breakfast together and then headed separate ways to prepare. Frances went off to hair and makeup, and for Jimi it was all about relaxation. “My wedding day was the most relaxing and beautiful day of my life. After breakfast I chose to start my day off with a nap. From there I woke up and walked along the beach shore, beer in hand, reflecting on what a lucky man I was. After my walk, I swam in the ocean for a while, floated on my back, nothing but peace. The combination of sun and salt water was the perfect appetizer for another beer, followed by another nap. I felt like I could really savor this incredible day as my excitement grew for our big moment.”

Frances recalls, “Being laid back about details can lead to some glitches. What the stylist did to my hair was terrible (I brushed it out), the bouquet was atrocious (lovingly fixed by Davina – photographer of many talents), and the sound system gave out right before I was to walk down the “aisle” (they fixed it), but the minute I saw my fiance standing there, it all melted away, time slowed, and I was overcome with joy.”

During the ceremony under a large tree on the beach, Frances and Jimi walked down the isle together, hand in hand, to their song, “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam. Their mutual friend, Greg, performed the ceremony with his iPad, and Davina and Daniel multitasked like mad and in between shots filled in as anything needed, including emergency florists, makeup artists, hair dressers, messengers, beer drinkers, wedding party members and friends. “Davina + Daniel’s gorgeous photography depicts moments that both friends and family can reflect on as if they had been there! They are superheroes with massive talent, a passionate work ethic, unabashed generosity and huge hearts. We still can’t believe how lucky we are to have had them there.” After the ceremony they had dinner in the resort’s wedding gazebo and then “spent the rest of the day just being together, exuberant. Eloping gave us what was most important to us on our wedding day, front and center: each other.”
