Junebug’s Favorite Weddings – Caitlin and Vikrant’s Indian and American Wedding

July 26, 2011 | editorial team

Originally published on October 2, 2009, Caitlin and Vikrant’s two-part Indian and American wedding is a favorite of ours because of the unique beauty of the couple’s two cultures coming together…

Today’s Real Wedding of Caitlin and Vikrant is truly a double dose of gorgeousness! With two weddings taking place across the globe from each other, in Pennsylvania and then in Delhi, India, these two honored their strong family traditions and celebrated all that makes them unique. Photographer Jihan Abdalla was at both events, and the images she captured are nothing short of stunning!

In Caitlin’s parent’s backyard in rural Pennsylvania, the happy couple was married during a day filled with family, friends and total ease. In the morning there was a picnic at a friend’s farm where they got to rest, relax and take a dip in the pond. Afterward everyone pitched in to help prepare for the wedding by hanging lanterns, setting up chairs and creating the flower arrangements to go in silver vases and pitchers. Caitlin and Vikrant chose a vibrant color palette of red, teal and peacock blue to represent Vikrant’s Indian background, and the ceremony and reception were full of meaningful Jewish traditions to incorporate Caitlin’s family heritage.

Seven months later, in Delhi, India, Caitlin and Vikrant took part in an amazing three-day traditional Northern Indian wedding celebration. On the first night the two families gathered for a relaxed evening where the women had their hands decorated with Mehendi. The second night was the Sangeet, a fun and rowdy evening of eating, drinking and dancing where Vik’s relatives sang funny songs teasing the couple about married life. Because it took place in Vikrant’s parent’s garden, just as their US ceremony had been in Caitlins’ family’s garden the previous year, the celebration was extra meaningful to all involved.

The third night was the most solemn and sacred. Vikrant arrived on horseback in his spectacular ceremonial clothing and jewelry, and Caitlin was dressed and decorated like a queen. During the Feras, or fire ceremony, Caitlin and Vikrant sat around a fire with family on all sides and exchanged vows in Sanskrit. The ceremony was made up of many small rituals which included making offerings of things like rice, wood and butter to the sacred fire, and then walking around it together. The images from this night are an absolute feast for the eyes!

Junebug’s Favorite Weddings – Genesis and Kevin’s Elopement to Paris

July 26, 2011 | editorial team

What we originally wrote when this Paris destination elopement wedding was first published on September 9, 2009 says it all! Read on for pure Parisian delight…

Paris + Elopement + New Years Eve + The most captivating couple around = R.O.M.A.N.C.E. What more is there to say?

Genesis and Kevin, the stunning and oh-so-in-love couple in today’s Real Wedding, had started planning a large traditional wedding, but soon felt like they were losing sight of their main priority- that their wedding day would be all about their commitment and their love- so out went the traditional wedding, and in came a plan to elope to the most romantic city on earth. Paris!

On the morning of the wedding, Genesis and Kevin woke up giddy. As they were getting ready they had their photographers, Amy and Stuart of Amy and Stuart Photography, deliver letters they had written to each other, along with a surprise gift from Kevin to Genesis of diamond earrings and a brand new veil. She had accidentally left the veil her mother had given her at home, so Kevin secretly found a wedding boutique in Paris that agreed to whip her up a new one. Sweet! Genesis wore a gorgeous dress by Amsale, pink shoes from Valentino (a woman after my own heart) and carried a bouquet of pink peonies, her favorite flowers, which they were miraculously able to find in the middle of winter in Paris! Kevin wore a tux by Valentino and his late father’s cherished gold four leaf clover cuff links.

Their small, private wedding ceremony took place in the courtyard at the Hotel Plaza Athenee. They were attended simply by two of their dear friends, along with their photographers Amy and Stuart, and videographers, Fifty Foot Films. After the ceremony there was a first dance to Today by Joshua Radin, chocolate wedding cake prepared by a world champion pastry chef, and photos on the roof top of their hotel, overlooking all of Paris. Standing on the rooftop in Kevin’s arms was one of Genesis’ very favorite moments of the day!

In the courtyard next to their ceremony site was a small ice skating rink where they began their day of fun, running around Paris with their photography team, exploring the city and taking photos at many of it’s most beautiful locations. From the roof top of their hotel, to Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower and throughout a carriage ride down the Champs-Elysees, they reveled in every joyous, spontaneous moment, and celebrated the new year and their new beginning as husband and wife.

Junebug’s Favorite Weddings – Nicola and Wynand’s Vintage South Africa Wedding

July 26, 2011 | editorial team

Nicola and Wynand’s South Africa wedding, which was originally published on March 3, 2010, became an instant favorite the moment we laid eyes on it. Held in Nicola’s hometown of Wellington, this wedding had a sweet atmosphere and perfectly put together vintage look…

Today’s Real Wedding is a pure delight to see. Nicola and Wynand planned the wedding of their dreams in the bride’s hometown of Wellington, South Africa, and the results, photographed by Christine Meintjes, were both whimsical and nostalgic – not to mention, exquisite down to the last detail. Enjoy!

The goals: Nicola and Wynand were focused on having a festive and intimate wedding that was at its heart, a true celebration with an abundance of good food, good wine and good friends and family. The food was especially important to the couple, so they made sure to focus attention on the catering – putting together a feast of rich cheeses, freshly baked breads, fresh summer fruits, preserves and savory tarte tatins.

The look: Visually, Nicola wanted a look that was timeless and classic with a subtle French flair. Her wedding color palette of white and shades of gray was found in the flowers, in antique books bound in ribbon on the tables, and in accents of pewter lamps, vases and candelabras decorating the reception hall. The timeless feel of the day was even incorporated into the venue for the ceremony – a small, historic theatre, Goodnow Hall, that created an intimate air for the couple to say their vows.

The bride’s gown, an elegant off-the-shoulder dress by Elbeth Gillis, and the groom’s dapper suit by Trenery, were a perfect complement to the decor, and Nicola accessorized with an “old” vintage brooch, and a “borrowed” flower from her mother, attached to her chic birdcage veil.

The moments: Aside from seeing her husband-to-be at the end of the aisle as she entered the ceremony, Nicola says the most romantic moment of the day was their first dance. Guests lit sparklers around the couple as they swayed to “Strangers in the Night” by Frank Sinatra.

The Details: This enchanting wedding, held on what the bride says was “a perfect wind-still hot summer day”, was stylish down to the last detail, and friends and family were a large part of making it all come together. The bouquets for the bride and her bridesmaids, as well as the boutonnieres, were hand-crafted by the bride’s mother, and the cake, as well as special raspberry marshmallows, were made by a close friend. Even the bride got involved making wedding cake-shaped biscuits with fondant icing for the reception.

Nicola and Wynand greeted guests as they entered the reception, leaving themselves free to relax and enjoy the rest of their evening, celebrating this festive and joyful occasion.

The Pros: All of the wedding professionals who helped to bring this wedding to life are listed in our Real Weddings Section. Check it out for more!
