Madeira was number one on my travel bucket list for years, listed right there on my Airbnb profile under “the place I most want to visit next.” So when an invitation landed in my inbox to tour the island’s top wedding venues, excitement felt like an understatement.
As a wedding publication in business since 2008, we have watched a lot of trends bloom and fade. But one shift has only continued to grow. The last venue on our list is a little different, as it isn’t a hotel at all, but instead a truly special event space. The Nini Andrade Silva Design Centre is a historic waterfront building in Funchal, once home to Gonçalo Zarco, the Portuguese navigator who first colonized the Madeira Archipelago. Today it belongs to Nini Andrade Silva, one of the world’s most celebrated interior designers, who has transformed it into a multi-use cultural space unlike anything else on the island.
The space blends design, art, gastronomy, and maritime history into one. A permanent exhibition showcases Nini’s private collection and celebrates Madeira’s seafaring past. There is a restaurant with sweeping Atlantic views, a lounge, and a café. The industrial bones of the building, with high ceilings, raw textures, and dramatic volume, pair with the refined design sensibility to create an aesthetic wholly its own.
