This Folksy Vedder River Elopement in Chilliwack, British Columbia was Chock-Full of Cozy Details

February 19, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

We’re honestly not sure what we loved most about this Vedder River elopement: the private vow exchange on the river bank, the backyard pizza party, or the bride’s modern-boho style! Acacia and Matt chose to have just a couple of witnesses present for their ceremony, which made the whole event feel natural and spontaneous, and made their cozy post-ceremony picnic even sweeter! One month later, it was time to celebrate with all their friends and family, pizza, charcuterie boards, and all the warmth of a casual backyard party. Photographer Angela Ruscheinski did an incredible job capturing both parts of this amazing celebration and all the nuance that goes into an elopement, especially one with two distinct yet equally charming parts!

The Couple:

Acacia and Matt

The Wedding:

Vedder River and Private Residence, British Columbia

Choosing our elopement venue was a challenge. First, we live in an absolutely beautiful, natural area and we considered the elements: water, mountain, forest, field. I grew up in the prairies and that seemed like a natural choice…I also grew up on a river and, in the end, that is where we were drawn. We spent a day driving to a few locations, scoping it out, we found a place that was decent enough. Nothing spectacular…. definitely not perfect. On our elopement day, we drove to the spot and there was a family having a picnic! We drove literally 10 feet further and stumbled upon the most perfect spot! We had our first look (after hiking down in my wedding dress) and got married with our two best friends beside the river at sunset. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day, we were truly blessed.

The beautiful thing about eloping and having a reception one month later is that there is time for everything to soak in, lots can get lost in the craziness of a wedding day! The best part of our elopement was the announcement of us being married. For the whole “ceremony” (which was quite short) we were both smiling uncontrollably. It was an incredible feeling to be husband and wife.

Our wedding vibe was just a natural outcome of Matt and I planning it. I don’t know if we set a style in our heads, it just sort of happened. Everything was very free-spirited, relaxed, and easy-going. We just made it what we wanted it to be. Lots of natural elements. Our elopement was spontaneous and it ended up being perfect. We could have invited friends and family who would have happily hiked down to the water’s edge but we wanted it to be simple and we wanted it to be just us.

We love pizza…doesn’t everyone? I made a giant charcuterie board and we served signature cocktails. We had pizza, salads made by friends, and for dessert a milk and cookie bar. We love to host parties and dinners and we just wanted our friends to be happy, enjoy delicious food and drinks and share our love. “People who love to eat are always the best people,” as Julia Child says, and we couldn’t agree more!

This Edgy Elegant Portland Wedding at Bingham Estate was a Champagne-Fueled Party to Remember

February 18, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

“Magical, formal, champagne-fueled, but relaxed.” That was the vision behind Ali and Wil’s incredible Portland wedding at Bingham Estate, and that’s exactly what they got with the help of the planning team at Bridal Bliss! From the decision not to have a first look to the focus on florals and vows during the ceremony, every bit of this wedding perfectly matched the couple’s unique vibe. Blum Floral Design did a phenomenal job creating arrangements that added a wow factor to every nook and cranny. And the bride’s chic Meghan Markle and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy inspired Pronovias gown and simple accessories were the cherry on top of this not-too-traditional, not-too-trendy day! We can’t get enough of every unique element — especially their fun champagne tower “unity ceremony”—and love how photographers Dylan Howell and Jess Woodhouse didn’t miss a beat in documenting it all!

The Couple:

Ali and Wil

The Wedding:

Bingham Estate, Wilsonville, Oregon

The most important thing in planning the wedding was making sure that each aspect was representative of us as a couple. From the music to the food to the flowers to the exact words in the ceremony, we wanted to make sure that each piece personified who we are. We love music so we chose the music for each moment of the day. We made changes to florals two days before to make sure each flower fit our vibe. Wil drew images used on our Save the Dates and favors. We had a massive champagne tower (even though everyone tried to talk me out of it). We refused a first look (even though everyone tried to talk me into it). We worked really hard to make the entire day representative of who we are and worked even harder to make sure it was an event that our friends and family would love! In the end, people walked away saying the two things we hoped they would: “This wedding was so you,” and, “That was the best party I’ve ever been to!”

It was important to us to be somewhere outside that felt isolated but wasn’t too far from downtown Portland. The second important aspect was finding a place that we could stay at until late. We love a party and we didn’t want to kick our guests out at 10:00 pm. We didn’t want to be too country club, and we definitely didn’t want to be too rustic. This venue was unique in structure, heavily wooded, and they let us stay well into the next morning, so it really checked every box we were looking for! Being by the water added another bonus we didn’t initially want but it was so great.

Unexpectedly, the ceremony was the most memorable part of our day. We both thought that it would be the cocktails and dancing but it ended up being the moments leading up to and the actual ceremony itself. It is a surreal moment when you are surrounded by hundreds of people all looking at you and all you can focus on is the person you are about to marry. Between walking down the aisle, reading our own vows, and that moment of sheer bliss after being announced, the ceremony was truly all we needed!

Our officiant was a friend of ours that lived with us for the first year of our relationship post-college. He really made it personal and special by sharing his stories about the two of us (playing ping pong and darts with Wil, drinking red wine and watching Grey’s Anatomy with me). Neither one of us are religious, so it wouldn’t have felt authentic to have a minister doing the ceremony. Conner did an amazing job of keeping it light and fun but also not cheapening it.

Wil and I are both writers — we actually started dating while taking Creative Writing classes in college. So, it was important for us to write our own vows. As we read them, there were audible sobs from our guests, so I feel like we succeeded! We also were really intentional not to include religious aspects because neither of us is religious. I wanted the focus of the ceremony to be our floral arch and our vows to each other. And I consider our champagne tower our spin on the unity candle — except everyone benefited!

Our best advice sounds cliche, but stay true to who you are as a couple! There were a lot of moments where it would have been easy to veer down a different path based on other people’s opinions and wants, but I am so glad that I was particular about every detail because that was what truly made the wedding very us. We worked hard to maintain the integrity of our vision through to the very last minute. On the other side of that coin: stay calm and be able to adapt when you can’t get your way. In the end, it is just a wedding and it isn’t worth getting upset over anything. Enjoy the entire planning experience! It is so overstated but it really goes so fast. Take in every floral meeting, site visit, catering tasting, and hours spent on Instagram looking for ideas because you will miss it when it is over.

We knew that we wanted our day to reflect our personal style. We both love a simple aesthetic with an edge. In everything we chose we wanted it to be timeless but unique and fresh. Wil and I are not traditional by any means so we wanted to make sure we veered from a super classic wedding but we also wanted to make sure we didn’t look back at our photos in ten years and feel like they were really trendy and dated. The word I kept coming back to was “magical” when people asked what I wanted to accomplish. I wanted the lighting, florals, and music to all contribute to an overall feeling of magic. Magical, formal, champagne-fueled, but relaxed.

Romantic California Farm Wedding at Pearson Ranch

February 17, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Inspired by the rustic feel of California farmlands, Ruth and Caleb created an unforgettable wedding day at Pearson Ranch that was as heartfelt as it was charming! The couple let natural be the primary decorator for their day and added sweet DIY touches, such as the handmade flower arrangements and table numbers, for a personal feel that perfectly suited their rustic, homegrown vibe. After their ceremony, which was set in the middle of a field with a simple wooden arch and bales of hay for seating, the couple journeyed with their guests to the property’s green barn for a cozy reception full of wildflowers and cafe lights. The entire day had that cool, laid-back romance we love most about California weddings, and Regan Scaife Photo & Video captured the inviting charm Ruth and Caleb curated for their special day brilliantly!

The Couple:

Ruth and Caleb

The Wedding:

Pearson Ranch, Woodside, California

We wanted to get married near Ruth‘s hometown. Growing up near the Santa Cruz mountains, she always hiked through them on weekends and we both love the golden California hills. In high school, Ruth would often drive down an old windy road with friends across the mountains to the beach, and the road is so familiar, beautiful, and romantic. Little did she know the Ranch she would get married at was tucked just a long windy driveway off of the road, secluded yet less than a day’s drive from the San Francisco area where most of our friends and family live. We knew this spot with views of the ocean and hills was perfect for us.

Caleb grew up on a farm in California, so we wanted our venue to be a rustic, romantic setting where nature provided much of the decoration for us. Ruth grew up with visits to half of her family in Germany and has always loved the way German public spaces and restaurants decorate with unrefined, woodsy elements – pine cones, wood, and mismatched flowers. She emulated this in the table flowers and other settings throughout the day.

The moment when the everyone was seated on their hay bales in the middle of an open field in the California hills and Ruth first set her foot into the aisle lined with white flowers, walking towards the altar. It hit us that this was really happening and the moment felt magical and surreal.

Our best advice is to make a list of all of the things you’d like to have included in your wedding, and then make those things as beautiful as you can. Throughout the planning process, we always stumbled upon great ideas that we hadn’t thought of, like an elaborate dessert bar or cute signs everywhere, and wanted to do it all. Yet because we hadn’t thought of it originally we soon realized what may be important to someone else wasn’t part of our dream. Those extras can easily take the focus away from what you have prioritized and it is never possible to do it all, so stick to what matters to you and do it well.

We DIY-ed so many things! We had an architect-friend design the invitations and RSVP cards, and we printed them on card stock, wrapped them in a strand of rustic twine and they turned out so beautiful. We also designed and created the table cards that had pictures of us when we were the age of whatever the specific table number was, to give people something to look (and laugh) at. Ruth had her bouquet professionally made but the rest of the flowers we purchased at San Francisco Flower Market. We had a big flower party with 11 people two nights before the wedding, cutting and arranging flower in the mismatched bottles. That night was one of the highlights of the wedding week, and the arrangements turned out amazing!
