This History-Loving Couple Married in an Utterly Romantic Toronto Wedding at 170-Year-Old Storys Building

June 4, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

History lovers, get ready to fall in love. Loryssa and Leo brought the romance at the historic Storys Building in downtown Toronto! After exchanging vows at St. Basil’s Catholic Church, the couple and their photographer, Daring Wanderer, made their way through the grounds for a newlywed session that was full of moodiness and drama. Then it was off to their reception, which featured exposed white brick, elegant florals, cafe lights, and beautiful signage and artwork designed by the groom. The 170-year-old building could not have been a more perfect backdrop for their classic vibe. From top to bottom, this Toronto wedding was as romantic as could be, and we’re here for all of it!

The Couple:

Loryssa and Leo

The Wedding:

St. Basil’s Catholic Church and Storys Building, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

We wanted the day to be a true reflection of who we were as individuals and as a couple. For that reason, it was important that we were both involved in the planning and that we were ultimately making decisions that made us happy!

Everyone tells you not to get stressed during the planning process, but let’s be honest, that’s easier said than done. Instead, we’ll share with you the little ritual we developed to help ease that planning stress: If either of you ever gets frustrated during the planning and think an argument is about to ensue, take a breath, put on some music, and dance it out. It’s impossible to be upset when you’re dancing!

Leo is a graphic designer extraordinaire, so he designed our invitations, menus, architectural prints, and our seating chart. He also worked closely with the owner of Nugateau Patisserie to design an eclair with an architectural print of the Storys Building on it. Also, my amazing best friend, Alexandra Louise, did the calligraphy for our place cards.

I’m an architectural historian and work in the heritage conservation field, so I knew we needed to have our reception in a historic building. I came across some photos of the Storys Building, booked us an appointment to see the space, and it was love at first sight! We didn’t even go see any other venues because we knew it was the one right away.

This Kitsap Memorial State Park Wedding Proves the PNW Can be Totally Elegant

June 3, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

Ashley and Peter brought forest elegance to life in their incredible Kitsap Memorial State Park wedding! The couple’s goal was to be close to nature and to throw an event that made all their nearest and dearest feel totally loved. Using neutral tones, elegant decor, and natural elements, they went above and beyond the typical moody PNW vibes to create a soft look that was as enchanting as it was unique. From the first look to the first dance, and all the romantic moments in between, Kamra Fuller Photography was there to capture every bit of this unforgettable Washington forest wedding!

The Couple:

Ashley and Peter

The Wedding:

Kitsap Memorial State Park, Kitsap County, Washington

Out of all the special moments from the day, two stick out above the others. The first was our first look. We felt a lot of stress leading up to the wedding and we both felt anxious the morning of the big day. Once we both saw each other it all seemed to melt away and everything felt right. The other very memorable part of the day was after we finished our first dance and all our friends and family joined us on the dance floor. Everyone was dancing and having a great time and we both felt so appreciative that people traveled near and far to spend that day with us. We were completely surrounded by the love and joy of all our family and friends. It was perfect!

Groom and Family’s Processional – “You & I” by Ingrid Michaelson
Bride’s Entrance – “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Haley Reinhart
Recessional – “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen

When researching venues we knew we wanted something outdoors surrounded by trees and near the water. It was also very important for our venue to be dog-friendly so that we could include our fur baby on our special day. Kitsap Memorial State Park was actually the very first venue we looked at. We looked at a dozen other venues but the conversation always went back to Kitsap Memorial State Park.

Ashley surprised Peter with a video message from his grandparents. They were not able to travel to the wedding, so Ashley solicited the help of Peter‘s family to record a special message and a friend to create a video toast from the grandparents to play at the reception. It was a very special way to include them in the wedding even though they couldn’t be there in person.

Intimate Autumnal Springfield, MO Forest Wedding at Rockspan Lodge

June 2, 2019 | Junebug Weddings

It’s not often we see weddings where nearly every detail is a surprise to the couple, but Jessie and Matthew’s forest wedding at Rockspan Lodge was one of them — and we’re here for it! The uber-talented team at Wildly Collective took the couple’s wedding-in-the-woods vision and added the most gorgeous bohemian-inspired twists. The ceremony took place at the waterfront, the couple was sent off in a canoe, and their sweetheart reception took place on a bridge over a small stream. Every detail was pure magic, and the moody florals designed by Queen City Blooms are what autumnal wedding dreams are made of! We’ll be swooning over these photos from Inner Images Photography for a very long time!

The Couple:

Jessie and Matthew

The Wedding:

Rockspan Lodge, Springfield, Missouri

When it came to planning a wedding ceremony, Matthew and I wanted to keep the focus on the unity that day was bringing. We wanted to keep the planning as stress-free as possible and the ceremony as intimate and personal as possible. Matt and I were able to pass on the ceremonial day details that were important to us so we could focus on each other and our family. We told Stevie and Celia that we love to be outdoors, wanted to choose music, wanted a place for foot washing and communion during the ceremony, and that we wanted 22 family members/friends there with us. They gifted us the most amazing planning experience resulting in the most intimate, beautiful day.

Almost every detail of that day was in some way a surprise! We only knew a few specific details about the day before it arrived. We knew the ceremony was taking place next to a bubbling spring, overlooked by a natural rock bridge. We knew what the structure of our ceremony would look like and that we would make a getaway by canoe off into the lake that was nestled into the middle of the property. Every decoration, every detail was carefully and intentionally organized by the team, specifically with us in mind. The entire day was full of surreal surprises!

My favorite and most anticipated surprise from the day was receiving the ring I would get to call mine and wear for the rest of my life. Prior to the ceremony, Matthew picked out and purchased my ring and then proceeded to lock it in a small wooden box on his bedside table. No one at the ceremony, including myself, had seen my ring until Matthew placed it on my finger as a symbol of our unity. This was a long-awaited, overwhelmingly beautiful surprise that was so special to share with our intimate community of people there for the ceremony.

If I have any wedding advice, it would be to find what is most important for you and your partner in the ceremony process, and not to lose sight of that. Don’t get lost in the small details of planning and remember the lasting reasons that are making your ceremony day so special and important. Your wedding team will make all the difference in the world. Communicate what is most important to you and let them do what they do best. Having a team beside me that shared my heart and vision allowed me to step back and fully be present during the ceremony and the days leading to it.

The entire day is one surreal memory after another, each one with its own significance. The memory I find myself daydreaming back to the most would be when Matthew and I shared our first dance to “Baby Blue” by King Krule. The wedding team had surprised us with a beautifully perfect spot for us to share those moments dancing. We were standing next to a moving stream on a shore bed of stones, surrounded by the trees and the soft pink sunset trying to break through them. Those moments spinning on the shoreline, those are the ones I remember most often.
