Why You Want an Unplugged Ceremony

April 18, 2020 | Junebug Weddings

Imagine this: your wedding photographer texts you with the news you’ve been waiting for—“your gallery is ready!” You sit down with your spouse, start scrolling through all of the lovely images, and then it happens. The ceremony photos start to appear on your screen, and you see rows of lifted cell phones—guests witnessing that special moment through a tiny screen.

Did your heart sink thinking about that scenario? Ours did, too.

Phones ruin your wedding photos. We want your loved ones to be present during your ceremony—to witness your marriage and experience how much it means to you.

Unplugged ceremonies are more than just a trend. They’re an opportunity to connect deeper with everyone in attendance. We’re here to give you the confidence to ask guests—even the most stubborn family members and friends—to put their phones away.

Set a Precedent of Being Present for Your Unique Wedding

As we mentioned above, it’s your responsibility to set expectations with your guests. The hopes and dreams you have envisioned for your wedding are different than theirs. We live in an Instagram era—if you want your family and friends focused on the present moment you need to guide them there.

Have your officiant make an announcement about experiencing the gravity of the moment about to happen. Remind guests that this is an important moment and you’ve specifically selected them to share it with you. There’s nothing quite like looking out at your loved ones in the audience to see every face smiling back at you. It’s much better than seeing the backs of their phones as they watch your ceremony through tiny screens.

Photographer Nikk Nguyen told us, “In reality, ‘unplugging’ is not only a win for you, but it benefits your guests. It allows them to be present and enjoy the moment out from behind the screen.

Leave it to the Professionals

Our team reviews thousands of wedding photos every year. We’ve seen everything from an iPad to relatives standing in the aisle obstructing the couple’s first kiss. You’ve hired a professional photographer and videographer for a reason. Trust them to capture every moment.

We promise the photos they capture of your ceremony will convey every emotion, special moment, and sentiment of the day. An iPhone photo could never compare. Ask your guests to stay clear while they work their magic.

Chaise Tinsley gave us this advice: “Think about your wedding day. Imagine yourself walking down the aisle through a sea of people you adore. What does it feel like? How does it look? What do you want to see when you look around? If you answered ‘iPhones,’ well, maybe this one isn’t for you. If you want to see the faces of the people that got you both where you are today then ask for an unplugged ceremony. Thank your guests for being a part of your journey and ask the collective group to be truly present for a day you’ll never forget. Oh—your photo and video teams will thank you, too.”

How to Announce Your Unplugged Ceremony

The officiant can certainly announce your wishes for an unplugged ceremony, but it’s also a great idea to add signage around your ceremony space. Signage will help cue guests to put their phones away as they take their seats—plus it adds a decorative touch. Junebug tip: Ask your florist to add a few flowers on the sign to tie it into the rest of the design.

Not Sure How to Word Your Request? Use These Phrases on Your Signs:

  • “Welcome to Our Unplugged Ceremony”
  • “We’re Going Unplugged”
  • “We’d Love to See Your Faces, Not Your Devices”
  • “Heads Up, Hearts Open, Phones Down”
  • “Please, No Photos or Cameras During Our Ceremony”

I was initially having trouble finding an outdoor wedding venue within the SoCal area that wasn’t a ranch or a beach. I knew that we both wanted something totally magical and different. We wanted something that we could create to be our own, that was easily accessible for our guests, and that didn’t have too many rules or regulations. When we found Hummingbird Nest Ranch, we knew it was perfect! It provided so many different areas that we could chose from to have each part of the wedding day at. From there, we curated each main event- the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception to be exactly how we envisioned it in our minds. We even had a pre-cocktail hour, which took place before the ceremony, for guests to have a quick bite to eat and a drink before the festivities began.

We surprisingly did a lot of DIY for our wedding! Our invitations, signage, and table numbers were all designed and created by the two of us! We had so much fun creating such unique pieces for our wedding day, we actually began a small signage business shortly afterwards. Everyone was so surprised to hear we made all of those things ourselves by hand! It made it that much more special and intimate to be receiving compliments on those aspects of our day.

The most memorable part of the day was reading our vows to one another. We both wrote our own unique vows and that was so special to hear for the first time for both of us.

Our wedding colors were dusty rose, navy blue, burgundy, splashes of gold, and lots of greenery! Although we were having a summer wedding, I wanted our colors to set the tone of the elegance of the occasion, without being too bold or taking over! Pink is my favorite color so I definitely wanted to incorporate that with a soft dusty rose in the florals and design elements.

Colorful New Zealand Beach Wedding at Motutara Farm

April 17, 2020 | Junebug Weddings

Rose and Luke wanted their New Zealand beach wedding to be a fun weekend getaway for all of the guests, so when they stumbled upon Motutara Farm, they knew it was a perfect spot! Their day had everything that free-spirited couples dream of: surfing, running bare feet, champagne caravan, amazing friends and family, and epic party. The decor was also totally awesome! We are obsessed with the colorful paper tassel backdrop Rose’s mother DIY’d for their day. While it may have been a bit time consuming, it’s easy enough for all levels of crafters to add a special touch to their day. We can’t wait to see how you’re inspired by all the swoon-worthy photos Wild & Grace captured of these sweet couple’s most quintessential New Zealand beach wedding!

The Couple:

Rose & Luke

The Wedding:

Motutara Farm, Whananaki, New Zealand

We were looking for a spot where it would be a great weekend away for all the guests—a really scenic beach town for our New Zealand beach wedding. We were pretty specific in wanting a venue with a great view, no curfew or noise restrictions, accommodation options close by, etc. we also had a reasonably large guest list and wanted to arrange our own booze & catering to keep costs reasonable (no wineries). Motutara Farm was a rare find to tick all the boxes.

The bridesmaids wore whatever they wanted, in keeping with the fairly loose color scheme. They took it a lot more seriously than I did, in terms of making sure they coordinated. I loved my dress. It was a splice of two different dresses by Brooke Tyson that I liked, with the high neck and soft lace of one combined with the fringed cutout and train of another one. She was amazing and so nice too.

Olga (our photographer) had tramped all over the venue (in the rain) the day before, so knew all the spots for so that we could get amazing photos & get back to the party quickly. She was such a cheerleader that going off with her for photos was an unexpected highlight. She was very much in the background the rest of the day, shooting candids, so we have so many great shots of everyone having a good time.

The ladies at Two Blond (a northland wedding planning service) that did basically everything – flowers, gear hire, set up and pack down assistance, they even manned the bar. They were so relaxed and funny, it made the days on either side really fun too. Brooke Tyson who made the dress was also so incredibly talented, a borderline mind reader and just a great yarn as well. Bruce at Motutara farm was great, the most relaxed venue management ever- we basically spent a week camping there doing set up and pack down bits and pieces and he was so chilled and helpful. Our dinner caterer Maty from wingless angel bbq was also so professional and a fantastic chef.

My lovely dedicated mum roped in our neighbor to tie hundreds of paper tassels to make into a colorful backdrop for the marquee. Honestly it was fairly painful and by far the most time consuming thing but they looked so cool all strung up together in the breeze. For a fairly wedding, always be asking yourself what is the simplest way to do something that involves the least set up / pack down effort (even if it’s a bit more expensive than the cheapest option). It’s such a coordination effort already, and you want to make sure you and your friends and family have time to enjoy the lead up and day after without a mad scramble to assemble or deconstruct things.
