Yellow and Green Spring Wedding in Australia – Rachel and Lai

January 27, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

Rachel and Lai were married at Yandina Station in Brisbane, Australia, where their spring wedding was so energetic and bright! I love the bride’s sunny yellow peep-toe heels and the bow-ties that the groom and his guys wore. The couple’s Fijian and Australian cultures were brought together beautifully in this super stylish wedding, and every gorgeous detail and emotion was captured by Studio Impressions in their romantic, breathtaking style.

The Goals: We wanted to embrace and celebrate the union of two families and two cultures. We tried to build our wedding day around the meeting of our two diverse cultures, Fijian and Australian.

The Moments: This question is the hardest one to answer because the entire day had so many special moments between family and friends and certainly for us as a couple. Lai mentions that for him, one such moment happened when he saw me emerge from the building I was waiting in (with my brother who was giving me away) to walk down the aisle, and he recalls how he could not hold back his tears. “It was a beautiful moment. I can still see it happening.” For me, I really cannot pinpoint a single favourite moment. I have watched our wedding video by Emm Films several times and I love every minute of it.

The Look: Due to the fact that Lai and I are both vocalists/performers, we are not inclined to wear subtle attire at all. I feel as though there was a great deal of big hair and dramatic make up, while also trying to keep in mind that we wanted to go for an overall look that we could look back on in years to come and not be too alarmed. I will have to give credit to Wil Valor for Lai’s dashing suit and Margaret from MXM Couture for creating my dream white lace wedding dress.

The Design: We wanted to create a warm and natural atmosphere for everyone, while still maintaining an air of elegance. This shone through in the choice of styling and furnishings. At the different locations of the wedding – from the ceremony location under the most prominent tree on the property, through to the reception in the dairy – there were displays of pictures and sentimental objects to us as a couple, that allowed our guests to journey through our love for each other. Our gifted wedding stylist, Carly Laczko of CL Weddings & Events, worked closely with our florist, Dezley Hughes, from Twig & Grace, to put together a floral palette of fresh herbs, trails of ivy and green foliage. We used the herbs for fragrance and sat these alongside Queen Anne’s lace, ferns, hellebores, and green sea holly. Poppy pods were also added on the dining tables. The vintage French provincial furnishings chosen by our stylist Carly, were complemented beautifully by waterford crystal candle holders, French linen table cloths and napery, luxe linens and beautiful textures ultimately providing us with a table design that sat well within its location in the countryside, reminiscent of days gone by.

The Advice: An obvious piece of advice is to keep the main thing, the main thing. This is easier said than done. I am referring to the love between the bride and groom. Choose the few things that you will not compromise on, for example my thing was my wedding dress, and then everything else you can work through one by one. I work for an event production company and I also cannot stress enough to brides that quality sound production is something that should not be overlooked. There is absolutely no point in having the best band in the world, and the most touching speeches if no one can hear them.

Peach, Cream & Gold Autumnal Backyard Wedding – Kristin and Bryan

January 24, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

I can’t say enough about how much I adore this backyard wedding! There is so much to love, from all the personalized details to each and every loving, sweet moment. The warm shades of peach, cream and gold in the floral design by Scarlett and Grace completely brought the atmosphere of a warm California autumn to life – and it was all beautifully captured by Kris Holland Photography.

The Couple: Kristin and Bryan

The Wedding: 10.12.13 – Home of the Bride’s Parents, Granite Bay, California

The Goals: For us, we were really focused on creating a fun, relaxed atmosphere while still acknowledging the fact that getting married is a big deal! It was important to us to have an amazing event that all of our loved ones would enjoy, but not to create a scene that would make us totally stressed out. The food and drink, atmosphere, and dance party were where we spent the majority of our planning time – we were going for delicious, beautiful, and hysterically fun.

The Design: We were mainly focused on creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that would highlight all of the incredible work that Kristin’s dad put into the backyard. We were lucky enough to have a gorgeous willow tree anchoring the ceremony space (that was then flipped to become the reception space), which became a sort of motif throughout the design and was included on the menus, save the dates, etc. Lighting was important to us, and our DJ did an incredible job with the dinner and dance floor lights. We were also fortunate to have an amazing florist, and she blew our minds with the colors and arrangements.

The Look: Originally I was not planning on wearing a traditional gown, but after our visit to And Something Blue in San Francisco I changed my mind. I fell in love with the Jenny Yoo dress as soon as I put it on – I knew I wanted something fairly simple that I could feel comfortable in and move in. The toughest part was finding a belt I really loved, which I finally found on BHLDN. I let the girls pick out their own dresses, with fairly loose parameters around a color scheme with peaches, off-whites and golds.

The Moments: Kristin: One of my favorite times was getting ready with the bridal party, my mom and mom-in-law. There was so much laughter and excitement, and I felt totally relaxed in a way I was not expecting. We also did a first look, which was an amazing time together before the ceremony. We got to get some of our nerves (and tears) out, and spend a moment getting ready for all that was about to happen. While the ceremony flew by, it is still such an incredible moment to reflect on now – I usually get crazy nerves in front of crowds, but it felt as though we were the only people there.

Bryan: My grandfather’s blessing of the meal! It lasted a minimum of 5 minutes (but felt like 12), filled with super traditional blessings, funny musings, and a few tears. It was truly perfect, and exactly what we had expected and hoped for. Also, when Kris Holland (our awesome photographer) grabbed us in the middle of cocktail hour for a quick photo shoot in the back of the property… we’re talking hiking through weeds, trampling on burrs, bugs, and dirt. It was awesome. We had a great moment to reflect on all that had just happened, and we are so thankful to have had that space together. And the photos turned out fantastic.

The Advice: For those in the throes of planning – lean on your community! We could not have done it all without the amazing support we received. On the recommendation of a friend, we also spent a weekend away a few weeks before our wedding to focus completely on writing our vows, talking about what we were hoping for from our marriage, and our excitement about it all. It was a very, very special time and highly recommended!

Cinco de Mayo Destination Wedding in Cabos San Lucas – La Chanda and Marcus

January 24, 2014 | Junebug Weddings

Bright, fun and festive – three words to perfectly describe La Chanda and Marcus’ Cinco de Mayo wedding in Cabos San Lucas! A day filled with personalized details, bold pops of teal and fuchsia, and even an adventurous Mariachi band, Jillian Mitchell captured every moment as the bride and groom danced the night away with their guests. Love it all!

The Goals: First, we wanted our wedding to reflect our personalities. We love to travel and we love to party; so it made sense to plan a destination wedding in Cabo on Cinco de Mayo – a day synonymous with revelry!

Equally important, we wanted to express the love we have for each other and for our guests. We wanted every guest to know that we were honored by their presence, so we added special touches – personalizing everything with individual guest names from the shot glasses to the wedding programs.

Finally, we wanted a private ceremony and reception at a gorgeous venue that would allow the celebration to flow seamlessly. When we first visited Sunset da Mona Lisa and stepped onto the terrace, we knew there was no other place we’d want to get married. The view is spectacular and the restaurant’s spaces were perfect for the set-up and flow we wanted to achieve.

The Design: Our theme was LOVE. LAUGH. FIESTA. and that’s exactly what we wanted our guests to do! We infused this theme and our logo into every element. Our website and printed materials set the tone with festive designs and bright colors inspired by the vibrancy of Mexico. That festive feel extended into all of our events, including a tequila tasting where everyone enjoyed laughing at me taking swipes at a custom piñata, labeled Marcus’ Bachelor iPhone.

For our ceremony, we capitalized on the natural, breathtaking beauty of Cabo. Two simple orchid arrangements were all we needed; the famous El Arco rock formation and the meeting of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean provided a stunning backdrop. Our officiant perfectly delivered a reverent, yet laughter-filled ceremony.

Guests discovered details everywhere, even in the bathroom, where they loved the vinyl decals on the mirrors encouraging them to get back to the dance floor and the personalized guest towels many of them took home as souvenirs instead of using them!

To facilitate our all-out, non-stop fiesta we had an open bar including signature shots, a cigar lounge, a crazy photo booth with custom signs, glow-in-the-dark necklaces (that turned into headbands after a few cocktails) and a ‘no-one-sat-down-for-hours’ soundtrack provided by our talented DJ.

The Look: Marcus wanted a dressy, but relaxed look so he opted for a light weight Calvin Klein suit with no tie. I wanted a pretty, classic fit-and-flare dress suitable for all night dancing. I also didn’t want to spend too much on a dress I knew I wouldn’t wear more than once. I got lucky and found the perfect dress at a sample sale at the first shop I visited. I removed the long train for a less formal, oceanside look. I used chiffon cut from the train to make removable cap sleeves, creating two wedding day looks – with sleeves for the ceremony and strapless for the party! I added a little drama to the look with sparkly “something blue” heels and a gorgeous necklace my mom found.

The Moments: More than a single moment, it was the overwhelming emotion of the whole day that stands out. The joy and love were palpable. From seeing each other for the first time that day to exchanging the vows we wrote to my dad’s overly enthusiastic reply (with his hand high in the air) when the Reverend asked who was giving me away, it was wonderfully emotional. I’ll never forget my heart beating fast as we held hands preparing to be introduced as husband and wife or the excitement of our first dance to Beyonce’s “Love on Top”.

Most memorable for our guests was a special surprise. Marcus is from Louisiana, as is my family and many of our guests. We love the city of New Orleans and wanted N.O. flavor in our celebration, like a Second Line. We couldn’t fly a whole New Orleans Brass Band to Mexico, so we got creative. Our coordinator found a local Mariachi band and we sent them the music for a classic song called “Do Whatcha Wanna.” They learned it, rehearsed it and right before dinner surprised our guests by playing it. Our guests went wild and jumped from their seats to dance. Dinner hadn’t even been served yet, but the party had started!

The Advice: If you’re planning a destination wedding, we strongly recommend a site visit. There are so many things you won’t know or discover unless you see and experience it for yourself.

Be happy with all of your vendors; don’t stop looking until you find the right match. You’re entrusting them with arguably the most special day of your life—choose wisely!

Especially take your time and find the best possible photographer. After the wedding is over, your memories and photos are all that remain. Because of our photographer Jillian Mitchell’s incredible images, we’re able to relive the moments over and over again!

Lastly, it’s your day, so as our second line song says, “Do Whatcha Wanna!” Don’t let others dictate the kind of wedding you should have. Have the wedding you want. We did and the day was perfect. And every anniversary will be a repeat Cinco de Mayo fiesta!
