DIY Forest Wedding at Begbie Falls in British Columbia

Keshia and Kelsey’s intimate forest wedding at Begbie Falls is the epitome of natural beauty and dreamy romance. Before the ceremony, the couple took a private helicopter ride through a misty canyon for a seriously spectacular photo session with photographer Kelly Brown. Then they made their way back into the forest to say “I Do” in the company of 18 of their closest family members and friends. Their adventure continued after the ceremony as they climbed a waterfall for a second round of gorgeous photos! We love that the bride’s intricate lace Saldana Vintage wedding gown and the groom’s casually cool ASOS suit perfectly complemented the natural backdrop and allowed them to embrace their adventurous sides. We also love that, despite the change of reception venue due to a sudden rain storm, the couple went with the flow and managed to create a cozy and romantic indoor reception full of personalized touches and quirky charm!

The Couple:

Keshia and Kelsey

The Wedding:

Begbie Falls, Revelstoke, British Columbia

We really wanted to keep our day true to us. We didn’t pay too much attention to traditional wedding day dos and don’ts! We love the outdoors and have a strong connection to the mountains, feeling our most spiritual and in tune with each other among towering giants so it was only natural that our wedding be set outside in the mountains of Revelstoke, a town very near and dear to our hearts.

We both agree that the whole day was so surreal for us and there are just so many emotional memories that will stay with us forever! Definitely a highlight was taking a helicopter ride together through a canyon to the Jordan River. It was misty with a low ceiling of cloud and fog covering the mountain tops and was just absolutely breathtaking! We actually did this pre-ceremony (with our amazing photographer along of course!) and having that time to ourselves to just “be” was so calming and the energy was so pure. It washed away all the pre-ceremony nerves. Dreamy.

It was also super important to us to keep everything simple and intimate, letting the day unfold organically (reminiscent of eloping); thus, we invited just 18 people to witness our marriage and tried to plan as little as possible. We included our loving and supportive parents and closest family and friends. These are the people who brought our two lives together and who will be there in future to keep our union strong and commitment true.

Immediately post-ceremony, we climbed a waterfall together, the base of which is where we got engaged the previous winter. It was a super sketchy climb up especially in the rain but that made it even more of an adventure….there was definitely a moment of truth clambering over the rocks down when I just had to trust Kels when he said jump and he would be there to catch me. We were both so emotionally charged that whole time, it was just beautiful.

Mid September in the interior rainforest of BC is an unpredictable time for weather. We wanted a space that would ideally let us break bread, drink wine, laugh and dance under the stars and have a late night bonfire. We searched high and low for an outdoor space that would allow that as well as let us bring in all our home cooked deliciousness and bubbly and be as noisy and happy as we wanted without keeping up the neighbors. The BC Interior Forestry Museum was absolutely perfect for us – they checked off every box! They even had a gorgeous viewing platform that looked out onto the Columbia River that they set up for us to use as our dance floor! Then that day it rained…and stormed. We ended up moving our tables inside to the wood stove heated museum space, which was earthy and cozy. It ended up just perfect and the staff went above and beyond. All the old logging saws and forestry equipment sparked up great conversation and the exposed interior timbers hung with twinkling bistro lights provided us with the perfect ambience.

diy-forest-wedding-at-begbie-falls-in-british-columbia-kelly-brown-photography-40

Our whole wedding was pretty much DIY! Thank goodness for patient and creative friends and family! All of our gorgeous bouquets and table runners were foraged locally in Revelstoke with my bridesmaids the day before the wedding. A lot of ferns were included, a favourite of Kelsey and me – my creative green thumb mother helped us all put them together the morning of the wedding.

We gave our guests a flight-friendly jar of our homemade maple bourbon apple butter, which we made together in the summer, harvested from the apple tree on our acreage back in SK. It was our way of sharing a little piece of our love with our closest people.

diy-forest-wedding-at-begbie-falls-in-british-columbia-kelly-brown-photography-41

Our bar was set up using vintage decanters and recycled crystal and mid-century glassware my sister and I hunted for thrift store after thrift store, adding such a chill vibe to our bar.

Kelly Brown is outstanding! From our first interaction with her we knew she was our kind of people! Her passion for seeking light and capturing real moments shines through in her imagery. We searched high and low for the perfect photographer to tell our story, and Kelly hands down was the right girl for the job – we are IN LOVE with our photos!!

Modern Natural Rochester Wedding at Arbor Loft

January 22, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

modern-natural-rochester-wedding-at-arbor-loft-alixann-loosle-photography-59

What happens when two wildly creative artists with two very different styles decide to get married? For Maureen and Alex, the only solution was a two-party wedding day extravaganza where the bride and groom each got to style an event! For the family-oriented ceremony and dinner at Makers Gallery and Studio, the bride chose cerulean velvet linens, gold tableware, and a gorgeous Anthropologie wallpaper backdrop to create a natural and sophisticated ambience. For the friend-oriented reception at Arbor Loft, the groom opted for retro signs, lounge seating areas, and a temporary tattoo station for a cool, relaxed party vibe. The oh-so talented Alixann Loosle Photography captured each unique style with such cohesiveness that the you can truly see Maureen and Alex’s personalities as individuals and as a couple.

The Couple:

Maureen and Alex

The Wedding:

Makers Gallery and Studio and Arbor Loft, Rochester, New York

It was most important for Alex and I to plan the wedding together and to plan an event that felt authentic to us. I think our guests appreciated all the details and that everyone enjoyed the atmosphere that we created. We wanted our guests to have fun and be relaxed and to gain a greater understanding about our relationship. I believe we achieved that goal.

modern-natural-rochester-wedding-at-arbor-loft-alixann-loosle-photography-62

Alex took responsibility for designing the content and feel of the ceremony and gave it care and creativity that paid off. My uncle officiated, there was no aisle, and Alex and I entered together, following our parents. In place of a song, we walked in to a recording of our first conversation (seriously!). Alex was recording audio at the Jazz festival where we met and he happened to catch our first interaction. (We set up a listening station at the reception for our guests to hear the recording.) The ceremony included a poem by Neil Gaiman, which served as the blessing, an audio story about the human search for “the other half” from Radiolab, and our marriage philosophy that we wrote based on our many conversations about why we were getting married.

One of the first things Alex and I pictured was dinner tables full of living plants. For the ceremony/dinner invitation I painted images of herbs in a cool palette. The colors for the ceremony and dinner were cemented when I found the wallpaper from Anthropologie that served as our backdrop. The beautiful cerulean velvet linens came next, and then I dyed the napkins to pull out the amber color in the wallpaper.

We made so many things for the wedding! I design wedding stationery, so I created all of our signage and paper goods. The process I use for most pieces is to paint with watercolor and then add text digitally.

In place of traditional escort cards, we adorned each place with a gold pear to represent the pear tree that Alex‘s grandparents planted in their yard. We spray painted paper mâché pears and then I attached a leaf-shaped name card.

Reading my vows and listening to Alex read his vows is my favorite memory from the day. I still run some of the lines through my head. Seeing Alex for the first time that day was also pretty great. I didn’t know anything about his clothes and he really rocked that custom suit. Another standout moment is my dad playing “Isn’t She Lovely” on his guitar.

For the reception, we knew we wanted a disco ball, a comfortable lounge space and a neon sign, but that was all we could decide on for a while. We never really picked colors because the casual vibe of the reception didn’t depend on color. The palette sort of ended up being black and white and green. I found some black and white blankets for $10 that we used as table overlays and we hung green ferns from the ceiling to soften the industrial space.

For the tote bag favors, Alex and I tried our hand at screen printing. I designed the image and then we printed them together. We laid them out to dry all over the floor of our house and admired our hard work, which gave the curious cat an opportunity to run around and ink her paws.

My advice to couples comes from my experience working for a wedding planner and as a bride. Choose good vendors. Work with people who give you good vibes and whose work you admire. Give them a little direction and a lot of freedom. When you give an artist creative license, you often get their best work. Plus, after months of planning, it’s nice to have a few surprises. Read contracts thoroughly and get all the changes in writing. Even when you have vendors you can trust, it’s best for everyone to know what the expectations are– not all surprises are good. Choose only things you love but remember to consider your guests. It’s your day, but you’re also hosting a party. The best kind of event is one where everyone can have fun.

modern-natural-rochester-wedding-at-arbor-loft-alixann-loosle-photography-11

We demarcated the different areas of the reception (listening booth, tattoo bar, desserts…) with banners that I made from cut felt. I was going to sew them until a wise friend said, just glue them!

modern-natural-rochester-wedding-at-arbor-loft-alixann-loosle-photography-25

Alex created a video from archival footage that played above the bar throughout the reception. It included video of people dancing in old Kodak ads, vintage home movies of weddings, sex-ed videos from the ‘50s and ‘60s, and kittens.

Dreamy Oklahoma Barn Wedding at Rosemary Ridge

January 21, 2017 | Junebug Weddings

dreamy-oklahoma-barn-wedding-at-rosemary-ridge-melissa-marshall-photography-14

Despite a sudden rainstorm that forced their outdoor ceremony indoors, Mariah and Andrew’s Rosemary Ridge wedding in Oklahoma was a beautiful mix of sophistication, rustic elegance, and quirky charm. Melissa Marshall Photography had no trouble at all capturing the excitement and exuberance of this sweet couple, whose enthusiastic first dance and “aww”-worthy couple portraits made our cheeks hurt from smiling! The talented planners at Forever Cole Events helped the couple create a natural, at-home feel by filling the space with candles, succulents, and blush and white roses to complement the deep red and gray color palette. But we must admit that our favorite element of this wedding was the impeccable fashion – from the bride’s intricate Allure lace gown to the bridesmaids’ two-piece blush and cabernet BHLDN ensembles.

The Couple:

Mariah and Andrew

The Wedding:

The overall style and fashion of our wedding was very important to me. I aimed for a somewhat traditional wardrobe with a modern twist. My favorite parts of my ensemble were the necklace and earrings because of their sentimental value. I was able to collaborate with a talented jeweler in Portland, OR to design these handmade pieces using heirloom diamonds from Andrew’s side of the family. The diamond from my necklace was repurposed from Andrew’s great-grandmother’s wedding ring and the diamonds from my earrings were from his grandmother’s wedding ring. These pieces are very unique, and I will cherish them forever. And of course, I loved my dress! The intricate lace, subtle sparkle, and open back design truly had a “wow” factor.

Andrew and I are both originally from Oklahoma, but currently live in Portland, OR. We soon realized that the most important aspect of our wedding was the location. There’s something so sentimental and special about getting married at “home,” nearby family and old childhood friends. We sought out a romantic, rustic venue. As soon as we stumbled on Rosemary Ridge, it was love at first site! And it just so happened that this beautiful gem is right on the outskirts of my hometown. It couldn’t have been more perfect.

My bridesmaids’ two-piece ensembles were absolutely breathtaking! The muted lace tops and cabernet tulle skirts created a rich, romantic vibe, and the elegant floral hairpieces were the perfect finishing touch.

It was so amazing, fun, and comfortable to work with Melissa on our wedding day. She has been with us through our journey from engagement to newlyweds. Melissa shot our phenomenal engagement photos in Portland, OR and then traveled to Oklahoma for the wedding. She has given me so much advice along the way and has become a true friend. I remember feeling a huge sense of relief when Melissa and Josh, her husband, showed up at the wedding! They both have such a calm, cool presence, and make a dynamite team. Melissa is efficient, effortlessly creative, and always has endless ideas for cool shots. We are so grateful to have worked with her on our big day!

My number one piece of advice is to trust your judgement and stay true to yourself and your style. As the planning continues, it’s easy to start second guessing yourself. I found myself slipping into the trap of perfecting and over-thinking some aspects of the wedding. At times, I felt like I was running in circles with redundant or superfluous ideas, rather than moving forward with productive plans. So, I think it’s good to check in with yourself every now and then and reevaluate your wedding priorities. In the end, the wedding should be a reflection of you and your partner.

We had a vibrant, rich wedding day filled with an array of sweet memories. If we had to choose just one memory that stood out, the most poignant moments were during our first dance. Andrew and I usually shy away from the spotlight, but in that moment, we were overcome by love, enthusiasm, and excitement. We danced to Ray LaMontange’s “You are the Best Thing,” and spontaneously sang to each other as if no one else was watching. We have very quirky dance styles and freely danced our hearts out. It was the first time during the night that our nerves were able to dissipate. I will never forget experiencing the purist love and exhilaration during that dance!
